ATMEGA168V-10AU Descripción general

The Microchip Technology ATMEGA168V-10AU is a high-performance, low-power 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller with 16KB ISP Flash memory, 1KB SRAM, 512B EEPROM, and a maximum clock speed of 10MHz, housed in a 32-pin TQFP (7x7 mm) package and operating from 2.7V to 5.5V.

An 8-bit AVR microcontroller is a single-chip processor built on the AVR advanced RISC architecture, in which most of its 133 powerful instructions execute in a single clock cycle. Within the system hierarchy, it sits at the heart of embedded control systems, above discrete logic and below application processors, and belongs to the ATmega family of flash-based microcontroller ICs used across industrial, consumer, and automotive-adjacent designs.

Key features include 16KB of self-programmable ISP Flash with read-while-write capability, an 8-channel 10-bit ADC, and debugWIRE on-chip debugging. The device delivers up to 10 MIPS throughput at 10MHz, provides 23 general-purpose I/O lines, and includes three flexible timer/counters with compare modes plus a four-channel PWM. The V-grade voltage range of 2.7V to 5.5V makes it well suited to both 3.3V and 5V systems.

Architecturally, the ATMEGA168V-10AU combines 32 general-purpose working registers directly connected to the ALU, allowing two independent registers to be accessed in one instruction. Peripheral set includes a byte-oriented two-wire interface (I2C-compatible), a programmable serial USART, an SPI serial port, an internal calibrated RC oscillator, and five power-saving modes including idle, power-down, and power-save, with interrupt and wake-up on pin change.

Typical applications include battery-powered sensor nodes, industrial control panels, HVAC and appliance control, and hobby/embedded products such as Arduino-compatible boards. Its low-power modes and wide supply range fit portable and energy-harvesting designs, while the 10-bit ADC supports direct analog sensor integration.

A key design consideration: this V-grade part is limited to 10MHz; if your code requires 20MHz operation at 5V, choose the ATMEGA168-20AU or ATMEGA168PA family instead, which are footprint-compatible.

Aplicaciones típicas

ATMEGA168V-10AU es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: Battery-Powered Sensor Nodes, Industrial Control Panels, HVAC and Appliance Control, Hobby and Arduino-Compatible Boards, Portable Measurement Instruments, Serial Protocol Converters.

🧩

Battery-Powered Sensor Nodes

The ATMEGA168V-10AU fits battery-powered sensor nodes because its 2.7V floor allows direct operation from two AA cells or a single Li-ion cell without a boost converter, and its five power-saving modes (including power-down at microamp-level currents) extend battery life to years in duty-cycled designs. In a typical node, the MCU sleeps in power-save mode with the 16-bit timer running, wakes on timer or pin-change interrupt, powers the sensor rail, samples through the internal 8-channel 10-bit ADC, and transmits via USART or SPI to a radio module. The 10MHz speed grade reduces dynamic switching current versus 20MHz grades, a measurable benefit in always-partially-awake systems.

🏭

Industrial Control Panels

In industrial control panels, the ATMEGA168V-10AU provides the deterministic 8-bit control core needed for relay sequencing, button debouncing, and status LED management. Its 23 GPIO lines with pin-change interrupts handle discrete inputs directly, while the 10-bit ADC reads potentiometer setpoints and thermistor-based temperature feedback. The wide 2.7V to 5.5V supply range tolerates regulated 5V rails derived from industrial 24V supplies, and the operating temperature range of -40C to +85C covers cabinet environments. The USART supports Modbus RTU-style serial links to PLCs, and the SPI/TWI interfaces connect isolated I/O expanders, making a single TQFP-32 device sufficient for complete panel logic.

⚙️

HVAC and Appliance Control

The ATMEGA168V-10AU suits HVAC thermostats and white-goods appliance control boards where cost, flash-based field updates, and analog sensing matter. The 16KB ISP Flash with read-while-write supports in-field firmware updates via bootloaders over USART, while the 512B EEPROM stores user setpoints and calibration constants that survive power cycles. Four PWM channels drive triac/fan or buzzer outputs, and the internal calibrated RC oscillator removes the need for an external crystal in timing-tolerant designs, cutting BOM cost. The 10-bit ADC digitizes NTC thermistors for temperature loops, and debugWIRE enables production debugging through the RESET line without extra header pins.

🔧

Hobby and Arduino-Compatible Boards

The ATMEGA168V-10AU is directly usable in Arduino-compatible boards since the classic Arduino platform originated on the ATmega168. The 32-TQFP footprint matches common core boards, and the 23 I/O lines follow the standard Arduino digital/analog mapping, with PC4/PC5 serving I2C (SDA/SCL) and PB3-PB5 serving SPI (MOSI/MISO/SCK). Designers must set F_CPU to 10MHz in the Arduino core so delay() and UART baud rates calculate correctly. The wide 2.7V to 5.5V range lets boards run from USB 5V or 3.3V rails, and the ISP Flash bootloader (Optiboot-class) fits comfortably in the 16KB memory with room for user sketches.

📏

Portable Measurement Instruments

Handheld meters, dataloggers, and portable test tools benefit from the ATMEGA168V-10AU's combination of an 8-channel 10-bit ADC, low-power sleep modes, and on-chip EEPROM for calibration tables. The ADC noise-reduction sleep mode silences the digital core during conversions, improving effective analog resolution for low-level sensor signals. A small character LCD or segment display is driven from PORTB/PORTD, user input is captured via pin-change interrupts, and results are logged to external EEPROM over TWI. The 10MHz clock keeps dynamic current low, and the 7x7 mm TQFP-32 package allows compact two-layer PCB designs typical of portable enclosures.

🌐

Serial Protocol Converters

The ATMEGA168V-10AU works well as a protocol bridge between legacy serial devices and modern buses. Its USART, SPI, and TWI (I2C) peripherals can run concurrently with modest interrupt-driven buffers in the 1KB SRAM, enough for typical 64-byte framing windows. Common designs include USB-to-RS485 gateways (with an external transceiver on the USART), I2C-to-UART adapters for sensor aggregation, and SPI flash programmers. The 16KB Flash leaves ample room for state machines and lookup tables, and the 10MHz clock conveniently divides to standard baud rates. The 2.7V floor allows direct interfacing with 3.3V logic without level shifting on the MCU side.

What is the maximum clock speed of ATMEGA168V-10AU?
The ATMEGA168V-10AU runs at a maximum of 10MHz, delivering up to 10 MIPS throughput thanks to the AVR single-cycle instruction execution. Notas de diseño

Connect AVCC (pin 18) to VCC through a low-pass filter (e.g., 10uH inductor or ferrite bead plus 100nF ceramic) even if the ADC is unused - the datasheet requires AVCC within 0.3V of VCC for correct operation. Add 100nF decoupling at both VCC pins (4 and 6) and place a 10uF bulk capacitor nearby. If using the ADC, tie AREF to a clean reference through a 100nF capacitor; never connect AREF directly to a voltage source without series impedance when the internal reference is enabled.

The V-10AU speed grade is frequency-vs-voltage dependent: at 2.7V the safe maximum is below 10MHz, and full 10MHz operation requires the upper voltage range per the datasheet 'Maximum Frequency vs. Supply Voltage' curve. If you clock from an external crystal, set the CKDIV8 and low-sleep fuse bits correctly at programming time - incorrect fuse settings are the most common cause of 'bricked' boards on this family. RESET (PC6) must not be left floating; use a 10k pull-up, and remember debugWIRE shares this pin.

For the 7x7 mm TQFP-32, use 0.8mm pitch land patterns per the Microchip package drawing and provide an anchor via pattern or slightly elongated pads to absorb thermal-expansion mismatch during reflow. Keep the crystal (if used) within 10mm of PB6/PB7 with short traces and guard with ground pour. Route ADC analog traces away from the USART/PWM lines on pins 1-2 and 9-11 to minimize digital coupling into ADC inputs during conversions.

Estimated: battery-life benefit of the V grade - at 3.3V and 1MHz (CKDIV8 from internal 8MHz RC), active current is on the order of a few hundred microamps, versus milliamps at 10MHz/5V. Input values: internal RC oscillator, sleep mode power-down between samples. For duty-cycled nodes, budget the wake-up latency (6 clock cycles plus oscillator stabilization) when sizing the sleep interval; use the asynchronous Timer2 with a 32.768kHz crystal for accurate long sleep periods.
