ATMEGA48V-10MU Descripción general

The Microchip Technology ATMEGA48V-10MU is a low-power 8-bit AVR ATmega microcontroller with 4KB (2K x 16) In-System Programmable FLASH, 256B EEPROM, 512B SRAM, and a 10MHz maximum clock speed, operating from 1.8V to 5.5V in a 32-pin VQFN (5x5 mm) package.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a compact integrated circuit that combines a processor core, non-volatile program memory, data memory, and peripheral functions on a single die. The ATMEGA48V-10MU belongs to the AVR ATmega family of RISC microcontrollers, which sits within the broader hierarchy of embedded processors and semiconductor ICs. AVR 8-bit MCUs are widely used because their single-cycle instruction execution delivers up to 10 MIPS throughput at 10MHz for this grade.

Key features include the Advanced RISC architecture with 131 powerful instructions, most executed in a single clock cycle, 32 x 8 general purpose working registers, and an on-chip 2-cycle hardware multiplier. The device provides 23 general purpose I/O lines, three flexible timer/counters with compare modes, and picoPower technology for ultra-low sleep-mode current consumption, making it well suited to battery-powered designs.

The picoPower technology platform reduces power consumption across all sleep modes, which is the primary reason engineers select the V voltage-grade variant over standard ATmega48 parts. The 1.8V to 5.5V wide supply range allows direct operation from single-cell lithium coin batteries or two-cell alkaline stacks without a regulator.

Typical applications include battery-powered sensors, consumer appliances, industrial control nodes, and handheld instruments where low quiescent current and wide voltage tolerance matter more than raw clock speed.

When designing with this device, note the 10MHz speed grade constraint: the V variant is specified to 10MHz, so designs requiring 20MHz should use the ATMEGA48-20MU instead.

Aplicaciones típicas

ATMEGA48V-10MU es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: Battery-Powered Sensor Nodes, Industrial Control Nodes, Consumer Appliances, Handheld and Portable Instruments, Lighting and Dimmer Control, IoT Edge Sensor Front-Ends.

🧩

Battery-Powered Sensor Nodes

The ATMEGA48V-10MU fits battery-powered sensor nodes because its 1.8V to 5.5V supply range allows direct operation from a single lithium coin cell as it discharges below 3V, while picoPower technology keeps sleep current minimal between measurement cycles. In a typical node, the MCU wakes on watchdog timeout or external interrupt, reads the sensor over I2C or SPI, and transmits data before returning to power-down sleep. Because most AVR instructions execute in a single cycle, the wake-measure-transmit duty cycle completes quickly at modest 10MHz clock rates, further reducing average energy per reading.

🏭

Industrial Control Nodes

In industrial control panels, the ATMEGA48V-10MU drives relays, reads switches, and sequences outputs using its 23 I/O lines and three timer/counters with compare modes. The wide 1.8V to 5.5V supply tolerance tolerates unregulated 5V logic supplies with brown-out protection guarding against supply sag from motor loads, and the on-chip watchdog provides fault recovery per the family datasheet. Its 4KB flash is sufficient for state-machine control logic, while the 256B EEPROM stores configuration and calibration constants that survive power cycling in factory settings.

📱

Consumer Appliances

Consumer appliance controls, such as small heater thermostats, fan controllers, and coffee makers, benefit from the ATMEGA48V-10MU's low cost, 32-VQFN (5x5 mm) compact footprint, and robust 23-channel I/O for driving seven-segment displays, keypads, and triac control outputs. The 10MHz internal-capable clock keeps EMI low, simplifying EMC compliance in cost-sensitive consumer products, and the 2-cycle hardware multiplier supports basic sensor linearization in firmware without external components. The GREEN, RoHS-compliant package supports global consumer market environmental requirements.

🔧

Handheld and Portable Instruments

Handheld instruments such as multimeters, thermometers, and portable testers demand long battery life, and the ATMEGA48V-10MU's picoPower technology plus 1.8V minimum supply voltage delivers exactly that: the instrument continues operating accurately as batteries deplete, and power-down sleep modes extend shelf life between uses. The 10-bit ADC and internal reference (per family datasheet) handle direct analog measurement inputs, while the 512B SRAM buffers readings and the 256B EEPROM retains calibration data. Its 5x5 mm VQFN fits slim handheld enclosures with room to spare for a display and keypad.

💡

Lighting and Dimmer Control

The ATMEGA48V-10MU performs phase-cut dimming and LED lighting control using its timer/counter compare modes to generate precise PWM or zero-cross-synchronized output pulses. The 10MHz clock provides adequate timer resolution for flicker-free 8-bit PWM dimming, and the 2-cycle hardware multiplier eases gamma-correction lookup computations in firmware. Its wide 1.8V to 5.5V supply range survives the noisy, sagging supplies typical near triac circuits when paired with a simple series regulator, and the brown-out detector prevents corrupted EEPROM settings during mains dips.

🌐

IoT Edge Sensor Front-Ends

As a front-end for IoT edge devices, the ATMEGA48V-10MU acquires sensor data over SPI/I2C, pre-filters it, and hands off to a wireless module via UART. PicoPower sleep modes let the front-end duty-cycle aggressively, waking on sensor threshold interrupts so the wireless radio stays off until meaningful data exists, dramatically extending battery life. The 512B SRAM handles modest buffering and packet framing, and 23 I/O lines cover sensor, radio, and status interfaces simultaneously. When firmware grows beyond 4KB, the pin-compatible ATMEGA88V-10MU or ATMEGA328P-MU drops onto the same PCB footprint.

What is the supply voltage range of ATMEGA48V-10MU?
The ATMEGA48V-10MU operates from 1.8V to 5.5V. This wide range is the defining feature of the V voltage grade in the ATmega48 family, allowing direct battery operation from a single lithium coin cell (3V) or two-cell alkaline stack (3V) without a regulator. According to the Atmel/Microchip ATMEGA48V-10MU datasheet, the device combines this supply range with picoPower technology for minimum system current.
How much flash memory does the ATMEGA48V-10MU have?
The ATMEGA48V-10MU contains 4KB (2K x 16 words) of In-System Self-Programmable FLASH program memory, plus 256B of EEPROM and 512B of SRAM. According to the Atmel ATMEGA48V-10MU datasheet, the 4/8/16KB family members share the same core and peripherals, so firmware written for the 4KB part runs unchanged on ATMEGA88V and ATMEGA168V with more memory.
What is the maximum clock speed of ATMEGA48V-10MU?
The maximum clock speed of the ATMEGA48V-10MU is 10MHz, delivering up to 10 MIPS of throughput because most of its 131 AVR RISC instructions execute in a single clock cycle. If your design requires 20MHz operation, use the ATMEGA48-20MU variant instead, which shares the same 32-VQFN footprint but is speed-graded to 20MHz.
Where can I buy ATMEGA48V-10MU online?
The ATMEGA48V-10MU can be purchased from DigiKey, LCSC, and authorized Microchip distributors. As of 2026-09-18, LCSC lists the part in stock with pricing from $3.6571 for single units, and DigiKey shows the part available to ship same day. Octopart compares bulk discounts across 13 distributors, so checking Octopart before ordering is a good way to find the lowest bulk price.

What is the best drop-in replacement for ATMEGA48V-10MU?
The best drop-in replacements are other Microchip ATmega48-family parts in the same 32-VQFN (5x5 mm) MU package, such as ATMEGA48V-10MMU, ATMEGA48PV-10MUR, and ATMEGA48PA-15MZ. All are pin-to-pin compatible with identical peripheral sets; the differences are voltage grade (PV adds industrial temperature), speed grade, and process revision. According to Microchip's product pages, the newer ATMEGA48PA is the recommended successor for new designs.
What is the difference between ATMEGA48V-10MU and ATMEGA48PA-MUR?
The ATMEGA48V-10MU is a picoPower V-grade part rated to 10MHz over 1.8V to 5.5V, while the ATMEGA48PA-MUR is the picoPower A-grade revision rated to 20MHz over the same 1.8V to 5.5V range. Both use the same AVR core, 4KB/256B/512B memory map, and 23 I/O lines, and both are available in the 32-VQFN footprint. Choose the PA when higher clock speed is needed; choose the V for legacy designs validated at 10MHz.
ATMEGA48V-10MU vs ATMEGA48-20MU - which is better for battery applications?
For battery applications, the ATMEGA48V-10MU is the better choice. Both parts share the same die, package, and picoPower sleep modes, but the V grade is characterized specifically for low-voltage operation down to 1.8V, extending usable battery life as the cell discharges. The ATMEGA48-20MU runs at up to 20MHz but a higher minimum supply voltage, so a discharging battery reaches the brown-out threshold sooner. If your firmware runs comfortably at or below 10MHz, the V part extracts more energy from the same cell.
Is ATMEGA48V-10MU the same as ATMEGA48V-10MMU?
Yes, functionally they are the same device. The trailing M in ATMEGA48V-10MMU denotes MAPBGA-style ordering suffix conventions in Microchip nomenclature for the same VQFN housing; the V-10MU and V-10MMU share the identical die, 4KB flash, 1.8V to 5.5V supply, 10MHz speed, and 32-VQFN (5x5) footprint. Always verify the exact packaging suffix (tray versus tape-and-reel) on the distributor page before ordering, but electrically they are interchangeable.
Where can I download the ATMEGA48V-10MU datasheet PDF?
The ATMEGA48V-10MU datasheet PDF is available from Microchip Technology's official website, from DigiKey's product page (which links the manufacturer datasheet), and from aggregator sites such as alldatasheet.com, where the 378-page Atmel document covering the 4/8/16KB ATmega48/88/168 family can be downloaded. Always prefer the Microchip official version to ensure you have the latest revision, as family datasheets are revised as errata are resolved.
Where can I find the ATMEGA48V-10MU pinout for the 32-VQFN package?
The ATMEGA48V-10MU pinout is documented in the 378-page Atmel family datasheet, in the ATmega48V in 32-pin MLF/VQFN package section. The 32-VQFN (5x5 mm) pinout includes VCC and GND power pairs, PB6/PB7 for the crystal oscillator (XTAL1/XTAL2), ports B, C, and D across 23 I/O lines, PC6/RESET, and ADC6/ADC7 input-only pins adjacent to AVCC and AREF. A pinout diagram is also available on LCSC and DigiKey product pages.
Is ATMEGA48V-10MU still in production?
Yes, the ATMEGA48V-10MU is listed as an ACTIVE lifecycle part by Microchip Technology. Distributor data confirms ongoing availability, with DigiKey showing ship-today stock and LCSC showing in-stock inventory as of 2026-09-18. Note that the digchip specification listing indicates a newer device, the ATMEGA48PA, is recommended for new designs, but the V-grade part remains in production for existing designs.
Is ATMEGA48V-10MU the same as ATMEGA88V-10MU?
No, they are not the same, but they are pin-to-pin compatible. The ATMEGA48V-10MU has 4KB flash, 256B EEPROM, and 512B SRAM, while the ATMEGA88V-10MU doubles those to 8KB flash, 512B EEPROM, and 1KB SRAM in the same 32-VQFN package with the same peripherals and pin map. Code written within the 4KB budget runs unchanged on the ATMEGA88V, so the ATMEGA88V-10MU can be used as an upgrade path when firmware outgrows the ATMEGA48's 4KB flash.
What are the key specifications of ATMEGA48V-10MU that engineers should know?
Key ATMEGA48V-10MU specifications: 8-bit AVR RISC core at up to 10MHz (up to 10 MIPS); 4KB In-System Programmable flash, 256B EEPROM, 512B SRAM; supply voltage 1.8V to 5.5V; 23 general purpose I/O lines; three timer/counters with compare modes; 131 instructions, most single-cycle, with 32x8 working registers and a 2-cycle hardware multiplier; picoPower technology for low sleep current; 32-VQFN (5x5 mm) surface-mount package. These figures come from the Atmel/Microchip family datasheet and distributor listings.
What is the best cross-brand equivalent for ATMEGA48V-10MU?
There is no true cross-brand drop-in equivalent for the ATMEGA48V-10MU. The 32-VQFN (5x5) footprint with the AVR ATmega pin map is proprietary to the Atmel/Microchip family; competing 8-bit MCUs from NXP, STMicroelectronics, or Renesas use different pinouts and toolchains, so they require PCB and firmware redesign. For functional (not drop-in) alternatives, engineers commonly evaluate the STM8 series or PIC16 series, but budget a layout and firmware port. Stay within the Microchip ATmega48/88/168 family for pin-compatible swaps.
Is ATMEGA48V-10MU suitable for battery-powered sensor applications?
Yes, the ATMEGA48V-10MU is well suited to battery-powered sensor applications. Its 1.8V to 5.5V supply range means it keeps running as a lithium coin cell discharges toward end of life, and picoPower technology minimizes sleep-mode current between sensor reads. With 23 I/O lines, three timers, and a 10-bit ADC (per the family datasheet), it can interface with sensors directly and wake on interrupt or watchdog timer, waking only for periodic measurement and radio or wired data transmission.
What programming tools support the ATMEGA48V-10MU?
The ATMEGA48V-10MU is supported by Microchip's MPLAB X IDE with the MPLAB SNAP programmer, which connects via the 8-pin SIL ICSP connector using two device I/O pins and the reset line for in-circuit serial programming and debugging. Third-party tools such as Atmel ICE, AVRISP mkII, and the open-source avr-gcc toolchain with avrdude also fully support the ATmega48 family. Existing ATmega48 firmware projects compile without modification for this V-grade part.

Notas de diseño

Estimated: the ATMEGA48V-10MU draws very little dynamic power, but always place a 100nF ceramic decoupling capacitor on each VCC pin (pins 4 and 6) and a separate 100nF on AVCC (pin 18), with AVCC tied to VCC through a low-pass RC filter when the ADC is used. Power the AVCC pin even if the ADC is unused - the family datasheet requires it connected to VCC. Enable the brown-out detector (BOD) for designs writing to EEPROM during operation so power dips cannot corrupt stored settings.

The 32-VQFN (5x5 mm) package has a center exposed paddle that must be soldered to a grounded copper pour on the PCB - it serves as the primary ground connection and thermal path. Use a 4x4 via array under the paddle to the ground plane. Keep the crystal (if used) within 10 mm of pins 7 and 8 (XTAL1/XTAL2) with short traces and place the crystal load capacitors directly adjacent. Route the ADC input traces away from clock and switching signals to preserve analog accuracy.

Do not clock the V-grade part above 10MHz - it is speed-limited by its voltage-grade characterization; designs needing 20MHz must use ATMEGA48-20MU or ATMEGA48PA. Also, PC6/RESET (pin 29) defaults to reset function; if you repurpose it as GPIO by clearing the RSTDISBL fuse, you lose ISP reprogramming capability - avoid this unless the firmware is final. When migrating from ATMEGA48V to ATMEGA48PA variants, review the family datasheet errata sections for silicon revision differences.
