ATMEGA8-16PU Descripción general

The Microchip Technology ATMEGA8-16PU is an 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller delivering up to 16 MIPS throughput at 16 MHz, with 8 KB of In-System Programmable FLASH, 1 KB SRAM, and 512 B EEPROM, housed in a 28-pin PDIP (PU) package.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a processor core, program memory, data memory, and peripherals such as timers, serial interfaces, and analog-to-digital converters. Within the embedded systems hierarchy, the ATmega8 belongs to the AVR ATmega family of 8-bit microcontrollers, positioned above tinyAVR parts and below the ATmega64/128 family, and it competes with Microchip PIC16 and STMicroelectronics STM8 devices.

Key differentiating features include the advanced AVR RISC architecture with 130 powerful instructions, most executing in a single clock cycle, plus 32 general-purpose 8-bit working registers that enable the 1 MIPS/MHz throughput rating. The device integrates three flexible timer/counters, a 10-bit ADC with 8 channels, I2C (Two-Wire Interface), SPI, and UART/USART connectivity, a programmable watchdog timer, internal calibrated RC oscillator, and brown-out detection.

Technical depth: the read-while-write FLASH supports true in-system programming via SPI, and the separate on-chip boot loader program section allows firmware updates over the serial port without external programmer hardware. Fully static operation permits clocking down to 0 Hz for minimum power consumption in idle and power-down sleep modes.

Typical applications include hobbyist and education platforms (Arduino-compatible boards via MiniCore), industrial sensor nodes, motor control with PWM timer outputs, LED displays, and small embedded control products where through-hole mounting simplifies prototyping.

Design consideration: the PDIP package is ideal for breadboarding, but at 16 MHz ensure a proper decoupling capacitor (100 nF) close to VCC/GND and use an external crystal with appropriate load capacitors for clock accuracy.

Aplicaciones típicas

ATMEGA8-16PU es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: Hobbyist and Education / Arduino-Compatible Boards, Industrial Sensor Nodes, PWM Motor Control, Embedded Control in Legacy Equipment Maintenance, Battery-Powered Portable Devices, LED Displays and Lighting Control.

🧩

Hobbyist and Education / Arduino-Compatible Boards

The ATMEGA8-16PU is a staple of embedded systems education because its 28-pin PDIP package plugs directly into breadboards and ZIF sockets, allowing students to wire VCC (pin 7), GND (pins 8 and 22), a 16 MHz crystal on XTAL1/XTAL2 (pins 9-10), and an ISP header over PB3-PB5 without any custom PCB. The MiniCore Arduino package provides full IDE toolchain support, so blink-to-PWM projects run on the same code base as ATmega328 boards. Its 8 KB FLASH is sufficient for UART, SPI, I2C, ADC, and timer peripherals in teaching projects, while 1 KB SRAM handles modest buffering. Estimated: at 5V/16 MHz the core draws about 3.6 mA, allowing USB-powered experimentation without heatsinking or power design effort.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Nodes

In factory automation, the ATMEGA8-16PU gathers analog data through its 10-bit ADC (8 multiplexed channels on port C) and reports over I2C, SPI, or UART to PLC-side gateways. The industrial-temperature ATMEGA8-16PI variant of the same die extends operation to -40C to +85C for electrical cabinets, while brown-out detection and the programmable watchdog timer guarantee recovery from supply dips common on noisy industrial 24V-derived rails. Read-while-write FLASH and 512 B EEPROM let the node store calibration constants and event counters that survive power loss without external non-volatile memory. Estimated: running from an internal 1 MHz RC oscillator at 5V cuts active current to roughly 0.3 mA, enabling battery-backed sensor pods with months of runtime.

⚙️

PWM Motor Control

The ATMEGA8-16PU integrates three timer/counters - two 8-bit and one 16-bit - that generate hardware PWM for controlling DC motor drivers and small servo mechanisms. The 16-bit Timer1 offers complementary OC1A/OC1B outputs on PB1/PB2, enabling phase-correct and fast-PWM modes at 16 MHz resolution suitable for 10-bit PWM at several kHz carrier frequencies. Hardware PWM keeps timing deterministic independent of software load, which is essential in closed-loop speed control loops running over the UART. Combined with the 10-bit ADC for current or tachometer feedback sampling, the ATmega8 implements a complete single-chip motor controller. Using the -16 speed grade gives 16 MIPS of headroom for the control algorithm alongside PWM generation.

🔧

Embedded Control in Legacy Equipment Maintenance

Many production machines, test fixtures, and consumer appliances built in the 2000s carry an ATmega8 in a socketed 28-pin DIP. The ATMEGA8-16PU (or its revision-equivalent ATMEGA8A-PU) allows repair shops to service these boards without redesign: pull the socketed chip, reprogram it via SPI with extracted firmware, and return it to the socket. Pin compatibility with ATMEGA88-family parts also lets engineers future-proof obsolete inventories. The 512 B EEPROM preserves stored user settings during controller swaps, and the same crystal and reset circuitry is reused unchanged. Because the PDIP package withstands repeated socket insertions better than fine-pitch SMD, field servicing remains practical decades after original manufacture.

📱

Battery-Powered Portable Devices

With power-down sleep current of approximately 0.5 uA per the Atmel datasheet and fully static operation down to 0 Hz, the ATMEGA8-16PU suits intermittent-duty portable products such as remote controls, metering probes, and data loggers. The L-suffix sibling ATMEGA8L-8PU extends the supply window to 2.7V-5.5V so the same footprint runs from two AA cells or a single lithium cell through a small regulator. The integrated internal RC oscillator eliminates the crystal and its two capacitors from the BOM in cost-sensitive battery designs at the cost of clock accuracy. Estimated: a node that wakes once per second for 1 ms of active work at 16 MHz averages well under 100 uA, giving months of life from alkaline cells.

💡

LED Displays and Lighting Control

The ATMEGA8-16PU drives multiplexed LED matrices, seven-segment displays, and dimmable lighting using hardware PWM channels on port B (OC1A, OC1B, OC2) while ports C and D supply the 23 available I/O lines for row/column scanning. At 16 MHz, timer-sourced PWM achieves flicker-free dimming above the 100 Hz human-perception threshold even with 8-bit resolution, and gamma correction tables fit comfortably in the 8 KB FLASH. SPI mode (PB4/PB5/PB3) can chain external shift registers or LED driver ICs to expand channel counts without occupying additional MCU pins. The through-hole PDIP package simplifies hand assembly for one-off signage prototypes before committing to a production SMD layout.

What is the ATMEGA8-16PU microcontroller and what are its key specifications?
The ATMEGA8-16PU is an 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller from Microchip Technology (originally Atmel) with 16 MHz maximum clock speed, 8 KB ISP FLASH (4K x 16), 1 KB SRAM, 512 B EEPROM, and 23 general-purpose I/O lines, packaged in a 28-pin PDIP. It delivers up to 16 MIPS throughput at 16 MHz and includes I2C, SPI, and UART/USART interfaces, a 10-bit ADC, three timer/counters, PWM, brown-out detection, and a watchdog timer. According to the Atmel datasheet, the AVR architecture executes 130 instructions, most in a single clock cycle.
What is the price of ATMEGA8-16PU?
As of 2026-09-18, the ATMEGA8-16PU typically sells for around $3.20 at quantity 1, with volume discounts to approximately $2.05 per unit at 1000 pieces on XAIPART. Prices vary by distributor; Octopart lists 14 distributors carrying this part, so comparing bulk tiers is worthwhile. Because the ATmega8A-PU successor is often cheaper and functionally equivalent, buyers should check ATMEGA8A-PU pricing before ordering the original part.
Where to buy ATMEGA8-16PU online?
The ATMEGA8-16PU is available from XAIPART (ships worldwide) as well as major distributors including DigiKey, Mouser, and via price comparison on Octopart, which tracks 14 distributors. DigiKey lists the part under both Microchip Technology (stock number 739787) and Atmel/Rochester Electronics sources. When ordering, verify the temperature suffix: the -PU grade is commercial 0C to 70C; industrial applications need the -PI grade for -40C to +85C operation.
What is the best drop-in replacement for ATMEGA8-16PU?
The best drop-in replacement for the ATMEGA8-16PU is the ATMEGA8A-PU. It is pin-to-pin compatible in the same 28-pin PDIP package with identical 16 MHz, 8 KB FLASH, 1 KB SRAM, and 512 B EEPROM ratings. According to the manufacturer, the ATmega8A is a newer die revision of the ATmega8 with equivalent or improved electrical characteristics and no firmware changes required in typical designs. The ATMEGA8-16PI (industrial temperature grade) is another pin-compatible option when -40C to +85C operation is needed.
Is ATMEGA8A-PU a direct replacement for ATMEGA8-16PU?
Yes. The ATMEGA8A-PU is a direct drop-in replacement for the ATMEGA8-16PU: same 28-pin PDIP footprint, identical pinout, same 16 MHz speed grade, and same memory configuration (8 KB FLASH, 1 KB SRAM, 512 B EEPROM). The ATmega8A is a die-shrink/refresh of the original ATmega8 with updated electrical characteristics; existing firmware compiled for the ATmega8 runs unchanged in virtually all cases. Microchip positions the ATmega8A explicitly as the newer device available option for ATmega8 designs.
Can ATMEGA88 replace ATMEGA8-16PU?
The ATMEGA88/ATMEGA88PA-PU is pin compatible with the ATMEGA8-16PU in the 28-pin PDIP package, but it is not a true drop-in replacement. According to Microchip application note AVR094, ATmega88 is not designed as a replacement for ATmega8; register names, peripheral behavior, and memory mapping differ, so firmware must be ported and recompiled. Benefits include twice the FLASH (8 KB still but with more of it usable), larger EEPROM, and more peripherals. Choose ATMEGA88 only when you can modify code.
ATMEGA8-16PU vs ATMEGA8A-PU: what is the difference?
Functionally, there is no practical difference: both are 8-bit AVR microcontrollers in 28-pin PDIP with 16 MHz, 8 KB FLASH, 1 KB SRAM, and 512 B EEPROM, and they are pin-to-pin identical. The ATMEGA8A is a newer silicon revision of the ATmega8 core with some updated electrical characteristics and improved manufacturing. The original ATMEGA8-16PU is progressively harder to source, so most designers order ATMEGA8A-PU for new builds while using it to service legacy ATmega8 sockets without any redesign.
What is the operating voltage range of ATMEGA8-16PU?
The ATmega8 family operates from 2.7V to 5.5V, with the 16 MHz speed grade (ATMEGA8-16) specified for 4.5V to 5.5V operation. For lower-voltage battery designs, use the L-suffix parts (ATMEGA8L-8PU) rated 2.7V to 5.5V at up to 8 MHz. According to the Atmel datasheet, running the -16 grade below 4.5V is outside the guaranteed speed specification, so always pair the speed grade with the correct supply voltage window for reliable operation.
Where can I download the ATMEGA8-16PU datasheet PDF?
The ATMEGA8-16PU datasheet PDF is available from Microchip Technology's official website under the ATmega8 document, and mirrors such as datasheets.com and alldatasheet.com host the Atmel original (8-bit AVR with 8K Bytes In-System Programmable Flash). The datasheet covers complete electrical characteristics, the 28-pin PDIP pinout diagram, register descriptions, and the instruction set. For engineering work, always use the latest revision from microchip.com since errata and characteristic updates are applied between releases.
Where can I find the ATMEGA8-16PU pinout diagram?
The ATMEGA8-16PU pinout is published in the Atmel/Microchip ATmega8 datasheet pin configuration section. In the 28-pin PDIP, pin 1 is RESET/PC6, pin 7 is VCC, pin 8 is GND, pins 9 and 10 are XTAL1/XTAL2 (PB6/PB7), pin 20 is AVCC, pin 21 is AREF, pin 22 is a second GND, and the remaining pins are the 23 I/O lines of ports B, C, and D including the ADC channels on port C and the SPI pins on port B (PB3-PB5 = MOSI, MISO, SCK).
Is the ATMEGA8-16PU suitable for Arduino projects?
Yes. The ATmega8 is supported by the MiniCore Arduino hardware package on GitHub (MCUdude/MiniCore), which covers ATmega8, ATmega48/88/168/328, and lets you program the ATMEGA8-16PU through the standard Arduino IDE. Because the PDIP package fits breadboards directly, the ATmega8-16PU remains popular for teaching embedded C and AVR programming. Note the 8 KB FLASH limits large sketches, and you need an external USBasp programmer or Arduino-as-ISP to load the bootloader over SPI.
What is the difference between ATMEGA8-16PU and ATMEGA8-16PI?
The only difference is the operating temperature grade. The ATMEGA8-16PU (PU suffix = plastic DIP, commercial) is rated for 0C to +70C, while the ATMEGA8-16PI (PI suffix = industrial) is rated for -40C to +85C. Both are electrically identical 16 MHz, 8 KB FLASH AVR microcontrollers in the same 28-pin PDIP package with the same pinout. Choose the -PI grade for automotive cabins, outdoor equipment, or any environment below 0C; both parts are otherwise pin-to-pin interchangeable with no firmware changes.
What is the best Microchip PIC equivalent for ATMEGA8-16PU?
There is no true cross-brand drop-in equivalent for the ATMEGA8-16PU because Microchip PIC16 devices use different pin functions and register architecture even in similar 28-pin DIP packages, and firmware is not portable between AVR and PIC cores. Parametrically, a PIC16F886 or similar offers comparable 8-bit performance with 14 KB FLASH, but requires PCB and code changes. According to Microchip's official guidance, AVR-to-AVR migration (ATMEGA8A-PU, ATMEGA88) is the recommended path; cross-brand moves demand a redesign.
Is ATMEGA8-16PU still in production and in stock?
Yes, the ATMEGA8-16PU is listed as active by Microchip Technology and is in stock at major distributors as of 2026-09-18. DigiKey states 'Buy now, ships today' for the part, and Rochester Electronics offers additional Atmel-branded supply. However, since the ATmega8A is the promoted newer device, long-term buyers should qualify ATMEGA8A-PU in parallel to hedge against eventual consolidation. For volume production, check lead times and consider the industrial -PI grade which often has deeper stock.
How much power does the ATMEGA8-16PU consume?
According to the Atmel ATmega8 datasheet, active-mode current is approximately 3.6 mA at 5V/16 MHz, and in power-down sleep mode only about 0.5 uA, making the part suitable for battery-operated designs when sleep modes are used aggressively. Idle mode reduces consumption to roughly 1 mA. Current draw scales roughly linearly with clock frequency, so reducing the clock or using the internal 1 MHz calibrated RC oscillator, along with the brown-out detector disabled in deep sleep, extends battery life substantially in low-duty-cycle sensor nodes.

Guía de selección

Choose ATMEGA8-16PU when you need a proven 16 MHz, 8 KB through-hole AVR for commercial-temperature (0C to 70C) designs, breadboard prototyping, or servicing existing socketed ATmega8 boards. Choose ATMEGA8A-PU instead for all new designs - it is the same die refreshed, pin-identical, and better supported going forward. Choose ATMEGA8-16PI when the environment can reach -40C or +85C. Choose ATMEGA8L-8PU for battery-powered designs needing 2.7V operation, accepting the 8 MHz limit. Choose ATMEGA88PA-PU or ATMEGA48PA-PU when you can port firmware (per AVR094) and want newer peripherals or lower cost - these are pin-compatible but not code-compatible. All alternatives share the 28-PDIP footprint, so layout reuse is preserved across the family.

Notas de diseño

Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor directly across VCC (pin 7) and GND (pin 8), as close to the pins as possible, plus a second 100 nF near AVCC (pin 20) to pin 22 GND. Tie AVCC to VCC through a 10 uH inductor or low-pass RC network when ADC accuracy matters. Connect AREF (pin 21) to ground through a 100 nF capacitor when using the internal reference, or drive it from a precision reference - never leave it floating.

The RESET pin (pin 1) is active-low and shared with PC6; a floating reset causes erratic startup. Use a 10 kohm pull-up to VCC and consider a 100 nF capacitor to ground for power-on-reset extension, or rely on the internal brown-out detector enabled via fuse bits. Fuse misconfiguration is the most common failure mode: disabling SPIEN or selecting the wrong clock source can brick the device in-circuit. Always program fuses with a programmer supporting high-voltage serial recovery for ATmega8.

When using an external 16 MHz crystal on XTAL1/XTAL2 (pins 9-10), select load capacitors per the crystal manufacturer specification (typically 12-22 pF) and keep crystal traces under 10 mm. ATmega8 fuse settings select full-swing or low-power oscillator mode; full-swing is required above 8 MHz for reliable startup. Avoid routing ADC traces (port C) parallel to UART or crystal lines to prevent crosstalk into the 10-bit ADC conversions.
