ATMEGA88PB-AUR Descripción general

The Microchip Technology ATMEGA88PB-AUR is an 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller with 8 KB ISP Flash memory, 1 KB SRAM, and 512 B EEPROM, executing at up to 20 MHz in a 32-pin TQFP (7x7 mm) surface-mount package.

An AVR ATmega microcontroller is a Harvard-architecture 8-bit RISC processor that executes most instructions in a single clock cycle, sitting at the entry-to-mid level of the general-purpose MCU hierarchy (MCU -> 8-bit MCU -> AVR ATmega family -> ATmega88PB). Because program Flash supports read-while-write and in-system self-programming, no external program memory is needed; firmware is updated over SPI or UART bootloaders, which is why AVR ATmega parts dominate hobby, industrial control, and low-cost embedded designs.

Key features include picoPower technology for sub-uA sleep currents, 27 general-purpose I/O lines, three flexible timer/counters with compare and PWM modes, and a USART with wake-up on start of transmission. Connectivity covers I2C (TWI), SPI, and USART, supported by 10-bit ADC channels with internal and external interrupt sources. Brown-out detection and power-on reset provide robust operation on unregulated supplies.

Architecturally, the ATmega88PB combines 32 general-purpose working registers directly connected to the ALU, allowing one-cycle execution and up to 20 MIPS throughput at 20 MHz. The picoPower silicon revision reduces consumption in idle, ADC noise reduction, power-save, and standby modes, making battery-powered designs practical without external power-gating circuitry.

Typical applications include industrial sensor nodes, consumer appliance control, lighting and motor control interfaces, and functional-safety (FuSa) supporting designs - DigiKey classifies this part under AVR ATmega Functional Safety microcontrollers. The 20 MHz ceiling and 8 KB Flash suit cost-sensitive control tasks that do not require DSP-class throughput.

When designing with the ATMEGA88PB-AUR, note the industrial temperature grade of -40C to +85C indicated by the A suffix and the T&R delivery format implied by the R suffix; plan decoupling with 100 nF ceramics at both VCC/AVCC pin pairs to keep ADC noise low.

Aplicaciones típicas

ATMEGA88PB-AUR es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: Industrial Sensor Nodes, Consumer Appliance Control, Lighting and Motor Control Interfaces, Battery-Powered IoT Endpoints, Functional Safety Supporting Logic, Test and Measurement Fixtures.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Nodes

The ATMEGA88PB-AUR fits industrial sensor nodes because its picoPower modes cut average current to microamp levels between 10-bit ADC sampling events, and its industrial -40C to +85C rating survives factory-floor temperature swings. In a typical node, the SPI interface reads an ADC or sensor IC, the USART forwards data to a wired or wireless link, and brown-out detection keeps state integrity on unregulated 24 V-derived rails. The 8 KB Flash accommodates protocol stacks such as Modbus RTU with margin, and three timer/counters generate PWM for local actuation without external components, reducing BOM cost in distributed I/O deployments.

🔧

Consumer Appliance Control

Appliance control boards choose the ATMEGA88PB-AUR because the 8 KB Flash, 1 KB SRAM, and 512 B EEPROM cover button debouncing, display driving, and configuration storage in a single 32-TQFP costing around one dollar at volume (as of 2026-09-19). The 27 GPIO lines directly drive seven-segment displays, relays, and encoder inputs; PWM outputs from the three timer/counters control heater or motor power levels. The brown-out detector and power-on reset guarantee predictable restarts after mains dips, while in-system self-programming lets production lines flash firmware over a two-wire interface without removing the MCU from the assembled board.

💡

Lighting and Motor Control Interfaces

For LED lighting and small motor control, the ATMEGA88PB-AUR generates up to three independent PWM channels from its timer/counters, enabling dimming curves and simple speed control with no external PWM IC. The 20 MHz clock gives 8-bit PWM resolutions with kilohertz carrier frequencies that stay above audible range, and compare-mode interrupts support closed-loop current sensing through the 10-bit ADC. PicoPower standby modes let luminaires meet no-load standby regulations, dropping controller consumption to microamps when the lamp is off but the mains-connected supply must remain vigilant for wireless wake or wall-switch events.

🧩

Battery-Powered IoT Endpoints

Battery IoT endpoints benefit from the ATMEGA88PB-AUR's picoPower architecture: power-down sleep current, wake-on-USAT start-of-transmission, and pin-change interrupts allow the MCU to sleep between radio events for years on a lithium cell. The USART bridges to a low-power radio module or UART-based LPWAN modem, while SPI drives the RF transceiver directly. With 8 KB Flash, a lightweight protocol such as MQTT-SN or a custom frame stack fits comfortably; EEPROM stores device identity and calibration. The industrial temperature grade and brown-out supervision maintain reliable operation as battery voltage sags toward end-of-life discharge thresholds.

🛡️

Functional Safety Supporting Logic

DigiKey classifies the ATMEGA88PB-AUR within the AVR ATmega Functional Safety (FuSa) microcontroller grouping, and Microchip provides safety documentation packages for the AVR ATmega family. In safety-adjacent subsystems the part performs watchdog-supervised heartbeat monitoring, sensor plausibility checks, and safe-state actuation: the hardware WDT forces reset if firmware hangs, while compare-mode timers implement independent time-base cross-checks. The 8 KB Flash is sufficient for the diagnostics-and-voting code layer, and dual-use of the brown-out detector plus a supply supervisor covers both under- and over-voltage fault paths required in layered safety architectures.

🖥️

Test and Measurement Fixtures

Production test fixtures and bench instruments use the ATMEGA88PB-AUR as a low-cost sequencing and telemetry controller. SPI streams results to a host PC over the USART at 20 MHz-derived baud rates, the 10-bit ADC logs rail voltages during DUT power-up, and GPIO lines gate relays and signal paths. USB-serial bridges convert the USART for host connectivity. Because the TQFP-32 footprint is shared with ATMEGA168PB and ATMEGA328PB, a single fixture PCB can be populated with more Flash-capable parts when test scripts grow, protecting the hardware investment across product generations without layout changes.

Exact pricing varies by distributor; Octopart reports availability from 11 distributors, so comparing DigiKey, Mouser, and Xecor quotes is recommended before large-volume purchase.
Where can I buy ATMEGA88PB-AUR online?
You can buy ATMEGA88PB-AUR from DigiKey (part 5029501, ships same day), Mouser, Xecor, and XAIPART. DigiKey lists it as in-stock with buy-now shipping, and Octopart shows pricing comparison across 11 distributors. For production quantities, Tape & Reel (the R suffix) is the standard delivery format, typically 250 units per reel for 32-TQFP packaging.
What is the difference between ATMEGA88PB-AUR and ATMEGA88PB-ANR?
The difference is packaging only: ATMEGA88PB-AUR is supplied in Tape & Reel format, while ATMEGA88PB-ANR is supplied in a tray. Both share the identical die - 8 KB Flash, 1 KB SRAM, 20 MHz, 32-TQFP package with the same footprint and pinout - so they are 100% drop-in interchangeable; choose AUR for automated pick-and-place assembly and ANR for prototypes or hand placement.
What is the best drop-in replacement for ATMEGA88PB-AUR?
The best drop-in replacement is ATMEGA88PB-ANR (identical die, tray packaging) or ATMEGA88PB-AU (tape-and-reel sibling of the AU grade). For more Flash in the same TQFP-32 pinout, ATMEGA168PB-AU (16 KB) and ATMEGA328PB-AU (32 KB) are pin-compatible upward migrations. Microchip application note AVR094 documents the pin-compatibility approach used across this family, so PCB rework is not required.
Is ATMEGA168PB-AU compatible with ATMEGA88PB-AUR?
Yes. ATMEGA168PB-AU uses the same 32-TQFP (7x7 mm) package and pin-compatible layout as ATMEGA88PB-AUR, but doubles Flash to 16 KB and increases SRAM. Register-level compatibility is high within the ATmega48/88/168 family, so firmware generally recompiles without pin or board changes - this makes it the standard upgrade path when 8 KB Flash becomes insufficient, at a modest price premium.
Can ATMEGA88PB-AUR replace ATMEGA88PA-AUR?
Yes, in most designs ATMEGA88PB-AUR can replace ATMEGA88PA-AUR: both are 8 KB AVR ATmega MCUs in TQFP-32 with the same pinout and 20 MHz rating. The PB revision is a silicon improvement of the PA with enhanced peripheral mapping and lower power (picoPower), but verify the I/O multiplexing table in the Microchip online documentation if your design uses alternate pin functions, since a few peripheral mappings differ between PA and PB.
When should I choose ATMEGA88PB-AUR over ATMEGA328PB-AU?
Choose ATMEGA88PB-AUR when your firmware fits in 8 KB Flash and cost matters - it is typically cheaper than the 32 KB ATMEGA328PB-AU. Choose ATMEGA328PB-AU when you need more Flash/SRAM, more timers, or Arduino-compatible ecosystem tooling. Both share the same TQFP-32 footprint, so you can lay out the PCB once and populate either part depending on firmware growth over the product lifecycle.
Is ATMEGA88PB-AUR suitable for battery-powered applications?
Yes. The ATMEGA88PB-AUR integrates Microchip picoPower technology, which minimizes current draw in power-down, power-save, and idle sleep modes, and the USART supports wake-up on start of transmission for event-driven polling. Combined with brown-out detection that keeps the MCU safely reset at low supply voltage, it is well suited for battery-powered sensor nodes, remote controls, and metering devices where sub-uA average current is a design target.
Where can I download the ATMEGA88PB-AUR datasheet PDF?
The ATMEGA88PB-AUR datasheet is available from the official Microchip product page at microchip.com/en-us/product/ATmega88PB, and mirrored PDF copies are hosted on alldatasheet.com (25-page summary) and datasheet aggregators. Always prefer the Microchip official source for the latest revision, and consult the separate AVR Instruction Set manual for assembly-level details not covered in the device datasheet.
Where can I find the ATMEGA88PB-AUR pinout?
The complete 32-pin TQFP pinout is in the Pin Configurations section of the Microchip ATmega88PB datasheet. Pin 1 is PD3; power pins include VCC (4, 6), GND (3, 5, 21), and AVCC (18). Key pins are XTAL1/XTAL2 (7, 8), SPI MOSI/MISO/SCK (15/16/17), I2C SDA/SCL (27/28), ADC6/ADC7 (19, 22), and active-low RESET at pin 29 (PC6). The pin diagram on this page mirrors the datasheet numbering.
What is the lead time and stock status for ATMEGA88PB-AUR?
As of 2026-09-19, DigiKey lists ATMEGA88PB-AUR as in stock with same-day shipping ('buy now, ships today'), and Octopart reports 11 distributors carrying inventory. Standard factory lead time for reel quantities when out of stock is typically quoted by Microchip distributors at quote time; for production planning, secure Tape & Reel stock or use the Microchipdirect cross-reference tool to check alternate packaging availability.
What are the key specifications of ATMEGA88PB-AUR that engineers should know?
The ATMEGA88PB-AUR is an 8-bit AVR RISC MCU: 20 MHz max clock (about 20 MIPS), 8 KB ISP Flash with read-while-write, 1 KB SRAM, 512 B EEPROM, 27 GPIO, three timer/counters with PWM, I2C/SPI/USART connectivity, 10-bit ADC, brown-out reset and WDT, picoPower low-power modes, in a 32-TQFP 7x7 mm industrial-grade package. DigiKey additionally classifies it as a Functional Safety (FuSa) supporting part, relevant for IEC-oriented designs.
Is there an STM32 or NXP equivalent for ATMEGA88PB-AUR?
There is no true pin-to-pin cross-brand equivalent: ATMEGA88PB-AUR uses Microchip's proprietary 32-TQFP pinout, and STM32 (LQFP32 parts such as STM32F030) or NXP LPC845 do not share it. Functional equivalents with 8 KB-class Flash in LQFP-32 exist from ST, NXP, and GigaDevice (GD32E230), but migrating requires PCB re-layout and firmware rewrite, unlike same-family parts (ATMEGA88PB-ANR, ATMEGA168PB-AU) which are true drop-ins.
How does ATMEGA88PB-AUR compare with ATMEGA8?
ATMEGA88PB-AUR is not a direct successor to ATMEGA8 but is pin-compatible with a similar feature set, per Microchip application note AVR094 ('Replacing ATmega8 by ATmega88'). The PB part adds picoPower low-power silicon, more flexible timer/counters, and refined I/O multiplexing, while keeping the 8 KB Flash class and TQFP-32 footprint. ATmega8 designs can migrate by recompiling firmware and reviewing register-level differences documented in AVR094.

Guía de selección

Choose ATMEGA88PB-AUR when your application fits in 8 KB Flash, 1 KB SRAM, and 20 MHz, and unit cost is a primary driver - it is the cost-optimized picoPower entry point of the megaAVR PB family in TQFP-32. Choose ATMEGA88PB-ANR if you need identical silicon in tray packaging for prototyping or low-volume assembly. Migrate to ATMEGA168PB-AU or ATMEGA328PB-AU when Flash requirements grow - both are pin-compatible so no board redesign is needed. Avoid ATMEGA88A-AU unless maintaining legacy designs, since it lacks the PB picoPower optimization and newer I/O multiplexing. Trade-off to know: PB versus PA revisions differ in a few alternate pin mappings, so verify the Microchip I/O multiplexing table before a drop-in PA-to-PB swap in designs using peripheral alternate functions. For cross-brand alternatives, no true pin-to-pin equivalent exists; STM32F030 or GD32E230 require layout and firmware changes.

Notas de diseño

Decouple both VCC pairs (pins 4 and 6) and AVCC (pin 18) with 100 nF ceramic capacitors placed within 3 mm of each pin, plus one bulk 4.7 uF to 10 uF per supply domain. Tie AVCC to VCC through an LC filter (10 uH + 100 nF) when ADC accuracy matters; AVCC must never be left floating even if the ADC is unused. Connect GND pins 3, 5, and 21 to a solid ground pour to minimize ground bounce across the three return paths.

Leverage picoPower modes for battery designs: power-down sleep with pin-change or watchdog wake gives the lowest average current, while idle mode keeps timers running for PWM-off-state applications. Disable the digital input buffers of analog-only pins (ADC6, ADC7) via the DIDR registers to cut unnecessary switching current. Estimated: even small mA-level leakage from unconfigured floating inputs can dominate a microamp sleep budget, so set every unused GPIO as output-low or input-with-pullup during init.

PC6 (pin 29) doubles as active-low RESET; never use it as GPIO unless your design tolerates losing high-voltage (12 V) parallel programming - keep the external 10 k pullup. PB6/PB7 default to the crystal function; if used as GPIO, fuse settings must select the internal RC oscillator. When migrating from ATMEGA88PA-AUR, review the PB I/O multiplexing table in the Microchip online documentation, as a few alternate peripheral pin mappings differ between the PA and PB revisions.
