ATSAMD21E16L-AF Descripción general

The Microchip Technology ATSAMD21E16L-AF is an ARM Cortex-M0+ based 32-bit microcontroller running up to 48 MHz with 64 KB of Flash and 8 KB of SRAM, housed in a 32-pin TQFP (7x7 mm) package. It belongs to the SAM D21E family, an Enhanced variant with Functional Safety (FuSa) support targeting industrial control, motor drive, and lighting applications.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, program and data memory, peripherals, and I/O on one die. The Cortex-M0+ is ARM's smallest and most energy-efficient 32-bit core, designed for deterministic embedded control. MCUs sit at the bottom of the embedded system hierarchy: microcontroller > embedded processor > system-on-chip > semiconductor. The SAM D21E family adds an Enhanced peripheral set and FuSa documentation package, distinguishing it from the baseline SAM D20.

Key features include a 48 MHz core with single-cycle I/O access, 64 KB Flash and 8 KB SRAM, a 12-channel DMAC and Event System for low-CPU-overhead data movement, six SERCOM channels that can each be configured as UART, I2C, or SPI, a 12-bit 350 ksps ADC with up to 10 analog channels, one 10-bit DAC, and four 16-bit Timer/Counters. Full-Speed USB 2.0 Device and Host with on-chip transceiver and 8 endpoints is included on most SAMD21 SKUs.

The device operates from 1.62 V to 3.63 V, supports SleepWalking peripherals and six sleep modes (IDLE, STANDBY, BACKUP, OFF, STANDBY+RETENTION, BACKUP+RETENTION). The 32-pin TQFP footprint is one of the most common small MCU packages, easing PCB layout and hand-solder rework.

Typical applications include industrial sensor nodes, LED lighting controllers, low-power wireless sensor hubs (paired with an AT86RF233 or ATECC608B), battery-powered wearables, USB HID peripherals (mouse, keyboard, CDC), small motor control BLDC fan drivers, and home automation gateways. The Cortex-M0+ core with Microchip's Atmel Studio/MPLAB X toolchain and ASF/START code generation provides a low-cost entry into 32-bit embedded development.

When designing with this part, ensure VDDIO and VDDANA share the same 3.3 V rail unless the ADC and digital I/O are intentionally separated for noise isolation. Decouple each VDD pin with a 100 nF X7R ceramic capacitor placed within 2 mm of the pin, plus a bulk 4.7 uF tantalum or ceramic near the package.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives drawn from the same SAM D21 family and cross-brand competitors, and practical design notes not consolidated in the manufacturer datasheet.

Aplicaciones típicas

ATSAMD21E16L-AF es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: Industrial Sensor Node with USB Logging, LED Lighting Controller (DMX or DALI), Low-Power Wireless Sensor Hub, USB HID Peripheral (Keyboard, Mouse, CDC), Small BLDC Motor / Fan Controller, Home Automation / IoT Gateway Edge Node.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Node with USB Logging

The ATSAMD21E16L-AF fits industrial sensor nodes because its 48 MHz Cortex-M0+ core executes Microchip FreeRTOS with task scheduling overhead under 5% CPU at typical 10 Hz sensor rates. The 64 KB Flash fits Bosch BSEC closed-source library plus custom sensor fusion in roughly 35 KB, leaving 25 KB free for application code. The on-chip USB 2.0 Full-Speed Device with on-chip transceiver eliminates the external pull-up resistor and 48 MHz crystal required by most USB-capable MCUs, reducing BOM cost by $0.40 per board. Placed in a TQFP-32 footprint with 100 nF X7R decoupling per VDD pin, the part operates reliably across -40 C to +125 C and supports IEC 61508 SIL-capable systems through the Functional Safety documentation package.

💡

LED Lighting Controller (DMX or DALI)

The ATSAMD21E16L-AF is a strong fit for LED lighting controllers because the 12-bit 350 ksps ADC reads multiple thermistor-based LED junction-temperature feedback channels, while the 10-bit DAC drives constant-current LED driver reference voltages in PWM dimming mode. The 12-channel Event System routes timer overflows to ADC start triggers without CPU intervention, freeing the Cortex-M0+ core to execute DALI-2 or DMX512 frame parsing. With 64 KB Flash, the designer fits the DALI-2 IEC 62386 stack plus custom color-temperature curves, while the 8 KB SRAM buffers DALI receive frames for CRC validation. The 1.62-3.63 V supply accepts 3.3 V regulated rails commonly derived from offline buck converters in commercial lighting fixtures.

📱

Low-Power Wireless Sensor Hub

The ATSAMD21E16L-AF drives a low-power wireless sensor hub because the SleepWalking peripherals allow SERCOM (SPI) activity to wake the core only when an external AT86RF233 radio receives a packet, keeping average current below 5 uA in standby. The 12-channel DMAC moves radio receive buffer data into SRAM without CPU intervention, so the Cortex-M0+ sleeps while packets stream in. The 64 KB Flash holds IEEE 802.15.4 MAC plus 6LoWPAN compression, and the 8 KB SRAM fits one maximum-sized 802.15.4 frame plus crypto context. The L-suffix variant draws roughly 30% lower active current than the standard B-suffix, extending battery life on coin-cell nodes. The TQFP-32 package footprints onto standard 32-pin sensor-module PCBs without rework.

🖥️

USB HID Peripheral (Keyboard, Mouse, CDC)

The ATSAMD21E16L-AF is a natural choice for USB HID devices because of its native USB 2.0 Full-Speed Device with on-chip transceiver and 8 configurable endpoints, eliminating the external 24 MHz crystal plus pull-up resistor required by most competing MCUs. The 48 MHz Cortex-M0+ core executes HID report generation plus key matrix scanning at 1 kHz with under 20% CPU load, leaving headroom for LED animation. The 64 KB Flash fits USB MassCore VCOM-CDC plus HID stack plus custom ROM, and the 8 KB SRAM buffers HID reports for double-buffered transmission. The 32-pin TQFP (7x7) package supports both USB-C connector footprints and USB-Micro-B with the standard D+/D- pin pair on PA24/PA25.

🏭

Small BLDC Motor / Fan Controller

The ATSAMD21E16L-AF drives small BLDC motor and fan controllers because its 12-bit ADC reads three back-EMF zero-cross channels with sample-and-hold, and the 16-bit Timer/Counters generate center-aligned PWM at up to 48 MHz PWM clock with 8 ns resolution. The Event System routes timer overflows to ADC sampling, eliminating jitter on commutation. The 64 KB Flash holds Microchip's BLDC sensorless FOC library plus custom speed-control loops, while 8 KB SRAM fits field-orientation state-machine tables. The L-suffix variant's reduced active current keeps controller quiescent draw below 10 mA, suitable for always-on home appliance standby. The 1.62-3.63 V supply accepts 3.3 V derived from offline buck converters.

🧩

Home Automation / IoT Gateway Edge Node

The ATSAMD21E16L-AF is well-suited to home automation edge nodes because its six SERCOM channels run simultaneous UART (for RS-485 Modbus), SPI (for LoRa radio), and I2C (for sensor and EEPROM) without bus contention. The 12-channel DMAC handles Modbus frame DMA plus SPI radio DMA, leaving the Cortex-M0+ core free for application-layer MQTT-SN parsing. With 64 KB Flash, the developer fits a TLS 1.2 client plus JSON parser plus custom protocol handler, while 8 KB SRAM buffers MQTT publish payloads. The 32-pin TQFP footprint is hand-solderable for prototyping, while the L-suffix low-power silicon keeps standby current below 5 uA for battery-backed nodes.

Notas de diseño

Estimated: when the ATSAMD21E16L-AF runs at 48 MHz with all peripherals active and USB 2.0 FS transmitting at 12 Mbps, the active current is approximately 7-8 mA at 3.3 V. Place a 100 nF X7R 0402 ceramic decoupling capacitor within 2 mm of each VDD pin (VDDIO, VDDIN, VDDANA) plus a bulk 4.7 uF tantalum or ceramic capacitor near the package. Failure to decouple VDDANA independently causes ADC reference noise and degraded temperature sensor accuracy.

Route the USB D+/D- pair (PA24, PA25) as a 90-ohm differential pair with length matching within 150 mils and no stubs. Keep the pair away from switching regulator inductors and clocked signals. The 32-pin TQFP (7x7) package has a thermal pad slug on the underside that should be soldered to a 10 mm x 10 mm copper pour to maintain junction temperature below 95 C at industrial ambient.

Do not connect PA24/PA25 to external pull-ups unless the USB pad is configured for GPIO mode - the USB pad internal pull-up is enabled by the USB controller and conflicts with external pull-ups causing bus contention. Ensure the SWDIO and SWCLK pins (31, 32) have 10 kohm pull-ups during reset if no debugger is connected; otherwise the device can enter a non-debuggable state after watchdog reset. Avoid driving PA03 (VREFA) with an external reference during ADC operation, as this pin is the ADC reference ground return.

For SERCOM SPI configurations running above 10 MHz, add a 33-ohm series resistor at the SERCOM MOSI/MISO/SCK pins to damp reflections on long traces (above 50 mm). For ADC accuracy above 10 ksps sample rates, use the internal 1 V bandgap reference rather than the VDDANA rail, since switching noise on the digital supply couples into analog conversion results.
