ATSAML10E15A-AU Descripción general

The Microchip Technology ATSAML10E15A-AU is an ultra-low-power 32-bit ARM Cortex-M23 microcontroller from the SAM L10 family, integrating 32KB Flash, 8KB SRAM, and 32MHz operation in a 32-pin TQFP (7x7 mm) package with -40C to +85C industrial temperature range. It is marketed as the industry's lowest-power Cortex-M23 MCU, consuming less than 25 uA/MHz in active mode and less than 100 nA in sleep mode.

An ARM Cortex-M23 MCU is a 32-bit microcontroller built on the Armv8-M baseline architecture. It belongs to the broader taxonomy microcontroller unit (MCU) -> embedded processor -> semiconductor. The Cortex-M23 brings hardware-level integer divide, TrustZone-ready isolation (on the SAM L11 sibling), and deterministic interrupt latency suited for always-on battery-powered applications where every microamp matters.

Key features include a peripheral touch controller (PTC) supporting buttons, sliders, and proximity sensing without external components, a 12-bit 1 Msps ADC, multiple SERCOM interfaces for UART/SPI/I2C configuration, an ISO7816 smart card interface, an event system for inter-peripheral signaling without CPU overhead, and Sleepwalking I/O. The 32KB Flash variant (the "E15" code) is the mid-density option within the SAM L10 family, sitting between the smaller E14 (16KB) and larger E16 (64KB) parts.

Architecturally, the SAM L10 uses a Cortex-M23 core at up to 32MHz with single-cycle I/O access, a tightly coupled DMA, and Microchip's proprietary ultra-low-power picoPower technology with multiple sleep modes (Sleep, Standby, Backup, and Off). The BOD12 voltage detector and brown-out reset are integrated for industrial-grade supply supervision. The part comes in automotive and industrial grades; the -AU suffix denotes the 32-pin TQFP, 85C industrial grade, Tray packaging variant.

Typical applications include IoT sensor nodes, secure-access control panels with smart-card readers, low-power wearables, home automation touch keypads, industrial HMI, and battery-powered medical sensors. The combination of Cortex-M23 vector compute efficiency and sub-100nA sleep current makes the SAM L10 a frequent choice for Energy Harvesting designs.

When designing with the SAM L10, select an external LDO or buck regulator with low quiescent current, place decoupling capacitors within 2mm of each supply pin, and route the PTC sense lines as guarded tracks to maintain touch sensitivity. The internal FRO and DFLL can replace an external crystal for many designs, reducing BOM cost and standby current. This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in same-package alternatives, and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet alone.

Notas de diseño

Estimated: at 32MHz CoreMark active mode with all peripherals off, the SAM L10 draws approximately 25 uA/MHz x 32 MHz = 800 uA from a 3.3V supply. In Backup mode with RTC running, supply current drops below 100 nA. For battery-life calculation on a 250 mAh CR2032, expect approximately 250,000 hours (~28 years) of pure standby, but ~50-100 hours of continuous 32MHz active compute. To maximize runtime, gate SERCOM activity using the Event System so peripherals wake the core only on threshold triggers.

Place a 100 nF X7R decoupling capacitor within 2 mm of each VDDIN/VDDIO pin, and a bulk 4.7 uF tantalum or ceramic within 5 mm. Route the SWDIO and SWCLK signals as a matched-length pair (within 1 mm) to a 10-pin Cortex Debug header; add 100 ohm series damping resistors for EMI-sensitive designs. The bottom thermal pad on TQFP-32 is internally connected to GND - solder it to a copper pour for mechanical reliability and improved thermal dissipation, even though the SAM L10 power dissipation is modest.

Peripheral Touch Controller (PTC) sense lines must be guarded by GND traces to prevent crosstalk. Maintain a 0.2 mm air gap between X and Y electrodes and 0.5 mm to adjacent signal traces; route PTC lines at minimum 0.15 mm width. For PCB overlay selection, use 1 mm polycarbonate or glass with adhesive thickness below 0.3 mm; thicker overlays reduce sensitivity and may require PTC gain recalibration. Refer to Microchip AN2599 for the recommended touch sensor layout patterns.

Do not leave the RESETn pin floating - tie it to VDDIO through a 10 kohm pull-up with a 100 nF cap to GND for noise immunity. Avoid using internal FRO at temperatures outside -40C to +85C without enabling the closed-loop DFLL48M reference; the FRO alone drifts more than 1% across temperature. When migrating from ATSAML10D1x to ATSAML10E1x, note that the Cortex-M23 core requires ARMv8-M instruction syntax and an updated CMSIS pack - existing Cortex-M0+ binary firmware will not run.
