ATSAML11E16A-AFTKPH Descripción general

The Microchip ATSAML11E16A-AFTKPH is an ultra-low-power 32-bit ARM Cortex-M23 microcontroller featuring ARM TrustZone technology, secure key storage, and chip-level tamper resistance. It operates at up to 32 MHz, integrates 64 KB of Flash and 16 KB of SRAM, and is housed in a 32-pin TQFP package (7x7 mm). The device targets secure connected and battery-powered applications that require hardware-isolated execution.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a programmable system-on-chip that integrates a CPU core, memory, and programmable peripherals around a single die. The ARM Cortex-M23 is an ARMv8-M Baseline architecture core designed for deterministic, energy-efficient embedded processing, while TrustZone for ARMv8-M adds hardware isolation between secure and non-secure code regions. Within Microchip's portfolio, this part sits in the SAM L11 family - a Cortex-M23-based line positioned between the smaller SAM L10 (Cortex-M23, no TrustZone) and the higher-end SAM L22 (Cortex-M23 with rich peripherals). It belongs to the broader power management and microcontroller hierarchy: MCU -> embedded controller -> system-on-chip (SoC) -> semiconductor.

Key features include less than 25 uA/MHz active current and less than 100 nA in sleep mode, an Enhanced Peripheral Touch Controller (PTC) for capacitive touch sensing, a hardware Crypto accelerator suite (AES, SHA, ECC, TRNG), and an integrated Secure Boot with immutable root-of-trust. The 12-bit ADC, 10-bit DAC, and 16-bit PWM/timer subsystems make it suitable for mixed-signal sensing. ESD ratings are 4 kV HBM and 1 kV CDM per industry-standard test methods.

The IC uses a single 1.62-3.63 V supply and offers multiple low-power modes (Idle, Standby, Hibernate, Backup, and Off). CoreMark / Dhrystone performance scales linearly with clock. Compared with legacy 8-bit PIC MCUs, the ATSAML11E16A delivers roughly 40-80x more compute per MHz while maintaining comparable sleep current.

Typical applications include smart-home and IoT sensor nodes, secure wireless controllers (BLE/Zigbee host MCUs), battery-powered wearables, and secure industrial/medical sensor endpoints. With TrustZone and crypto acceleration, the part is well suited to products that must meet evolving cyber-security regulations.

When designing with this MCU, provide a 1.62-3.63 V regulated rail; for sleep currents under 1 uA, switch the core to Hibernate via the SleepWalking peripheral gating. Decouple VDD with a 100 nF + 1 uF pair close to the package. For touch or ADC applications, allocate the second 1 uF to AVDD, and keep the analog traces away from switching nodes.

Notas de diseño

Estimated: To meet the <100 nA sleep-current spec in Hibernate, ensure no peripheral bias leakage. Verify by measuring the ATSAML11E16A VDD current with no MCU activity and an isolated analog rail; expect ~50-90 nA typical. Disable the BOR in firmware for the lowest Hibernate numbers if the supply is regulated. Add a 1 uF X7R plus 100 nF X7R pair right at VDDCORE, and a 100 nF X7R right at VDDIO - the L11's supply-rejection ratio degrades without adequate local decoupling.

The ATSAML11E16A typically dissipates <50 mW, so thermal derating is rarely a constraint at 1.62 V to 3.63 V. However, in extended +85 C to +125 C environments, validate with the per-temperature current derating curves in the datasheet - active current at +125 C can be 1.5-2x the room-temperature value. For fanless or sealed enclosures, measure ambient temperature during worst-case DHCP/handshake workloads and confirm junction temperature does not exceed +95 C at the worst case.

Place a 100 nF plus 1 uF X7R capacitor pair within 5 mm of VDDIO and VDDCORE to suppress switching noise. For analog measurements (ADC), route AVDD/AVSS with a star-ground topology and keep the analog traces away from SWD and Reset lines. Use a 5 mil trace and 8 mil clearances for the 32-TQFP pins. The SAM L11 datasheet has a reference layout - follow it for the ANTON-to-PCB thermal anchor and PTC touch electrode routing.

Watch out for: (1) Attempting to use TrustZone-M without first provisioning BOOTPROT fuses, which silently disables the secure attribute mapper; (2) Forgetting to enable the PTC clock before configuring touch channels, leading to undetectable touch events; (3) Using GPIO pins 30-31 (VSS/VDD) as general-purpose I/O which are fixed as power pins; (4) TrustZone projects programmed with debug disabled cannot be recovered, so always leave a non-secure bootloader in the secure bootloader image. Plan before locking BOOTPROT.

When the ATSAML11E16A-E16 is paired with an external SPI/I2C peripheral (sensor, radio), use series resistor + short stub routing on high-speed SPI lines to dampen reflections above 10 MHz. For 4-wire SWD debug, route SWDIO/SWDCLK with parallel-ground shielding and keep trace length under 60 mm. The Cortex-M23 implements tightly-coupled memory, so flash wait-states only become an issue above 32 MHz - stick to 32 MHz to avoid wait-state insertion.
