ATSAML22G17A-MUT Descripción general

The Microchip Technology ATSAML22G17A-MUT is an ultra-low-power 32-bit ARM Cortex-M0+ microcontroller (MCU) from the SAM L22 family, featuring 128KB of Flash and 16KB of SRAM in a 48-pin QFN (7x7) package. It operates from a 1.6V to 3.6V supply at a 32MHz CPU clock and integrates Full-Speed USB, a segment LCD controller, and multiple low-power modes that drop active consumption to 39 uA/MHz (CoreMark) and standby consumption to 490 nA in ultra-low-power backup mode with RTC retention.

An ARM Cortex-M0+ microcontroller is a 32-bit RISC processor core designed by Arm that delivers higher code density and energy efficiency than 8/16-bit cores while maintaining a low gate count. It sits within the broader hierarchy of microcontroller -> embedded processor -> SoC -> semiconductor. Microchip's SAM L22 family targets battery-powered and energy-harvesting applications by combining a Cortex-M0+ core with sophisticated power management technologies, on-chip peripherals, and segment LCD driving capability.

Key features include the Cortex-M0+ core with single-cycle hardware multiply, 128KB Flash, 16KB SRAM, a 12-bit ADC, multiple SERCOM interfaces configurable as UART/SPI/I2C, Full-Speed USB 2.0 with device and host modes, a segment LCD controller (up to 4x40 segments), and an Event System for peripheral-to-peripheral signalling without CPU involvement. The 48-QFN package integrates an exposed pad for improved thermal dissipation and board-level grounding.

The SAM L22 architecture pairs the Cortex-M0+ core with a low-leakage process technology and a dedicated SleepWalking peripheral set. Power domains can be gated independently so SERCOM, ADC, or timer activity does not wake the CPU unless required. This makes the device well-suited for always-on sensor reading, smart-metering, and wearable designs that demand years of battery life.

Typical applications include battery-powered IoT sensor nodes, smart thermostats and metering devices, wearable health monitors, remote controls, segment-LCD user-interface panels, USB peripherals, and industrial sensor hubs. The integrated segment-LCD controller eliminates an external driver IC, reducing both BOM cost and PCB area for any product that needs a numeric or alphanumeric display.

When designing with this device, plan power-rail sequencing carefully because the SAM L22 has separate AVDD/VDDIO/VDDIN rails. Use a 1uF X7R ceramic decoupling capacitor on each supply pin placed as close to the IC as possible, and provide a USB- compliant 1uF capacitor on VBUS when the USB peripheral is used. Refer to Microchip application notes for low-power firmware patterns and segment-LCD bias generation.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing from DigiKey and Mouser, drop-in alternatives from the SAM L22 family and the Sitel MPN cross-reference, and practical design notes that go beyond what is printed in the manufacturer datasheet.

🧩

Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node

The ATSAML22G17A-MUT's 39 uA/MHz active current and 490 nA backup-mode draw make it ideal for coin-cell or energy-harvesting IoT sensor nodes that must run for years without maintenance. The 128 KB Flash accommodates LoRaWAN/Sigfox/Thread stacks plus sensor drivers and a secure boot loader, while 16 KB SRAM handles wireless protocol buffers and sensor fusion. SleepWalking peripherals let UART, ADC, and GPIO wake the CPU only when real work is needed, eliminating idle polling. The 1.6V to 3.6V supply range supports single-cell alkaline, NiMH, and Li-MnO2 cells with direct connection to the integrated low-dropout regulator.

🏭

Smart Meter / Segment-LCD Display

The integrated segment LCD controller (up to 4x40 segments) eliminates an external driver IC on electricity, water, gas, and heat meters, reducing BOM cost and PCB area. The ATSAML22G17A-MUT's ultra-low-power backup mode with full SRAM and RTC retention lets the meter track cumulative consumption and time-stamp events for years on the backup battery alone. The 12-bit ADC can sample CT or shunt signals at low duty cycles while the CPU stays asleep, and SleepWalking lets ADC compare-result events wake the application layer only when thresholds are crossed. The wide 1.6V to 3.6V supply range accommodates lithium primary cells that decay gracefully.

💊

Wearable Health Monitor

Wearable fitness bands and continuous-health monitors demand sub-mA average current draw and small PCB area. The ATSAML22G17A-MUT's Cortex-M0+ core delivers the throughput needed for heart-rate, SpO2, and accelerometer signal processing while spending most of its time in backup mode. The 490 nA RTC-retention current combined with SleepWalking GPIO wake-ups lets a wearable idle on a coin cell for months between charges. The integrated segment LCD controller drives small status displays without a separate driver chip, and the 48-QFN's 7x7 mm footprint fits wristband PCBs. USB support enables firmware updates and battery charging with no extra bridge IC.

🔧

USB Human-Interface Device (HID)

The 128 KB Flash holds USB stacks plus HID report handlers and DFU boot loaders, while 16 KB SRAM serves as USB endpoint buffer space. The integrated 48 MHz internal PLL with USB clock recovery removes the cost of an external crystal on many designs. Low active current and SleepWalking peripherals keep USB dongles and battery-powered peripherals cool and energy-efficient.

🌐

Smart Thermostat with Segment LCD

Smart thermostats combine a segment LCD for status display, low-power wireless (Zigbee, Thread, BLE, or Wi-Fi co-processor), and mains or battery power. The ATSAML22G17A-MUT's integrated segment LCD controller eliminates the display-driver cost, and the Cortex-M0+ core handles UI logic, schedule storage, and sensor polling. Six SERCOM modules talk to the wireless co-processor, NVRAM, and temperature/humidity sensors over SPI, I2C, or UART. The 128 KB Flash stores UI translations, scheduling algorithms, and a wireless-stack bridge, while ultra-low-power modes extend battery life when AC power is removed.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Hub / Modbus Bridge

Industrial sensor hubs and Modbus bridges aggregate analog and digital sensor data and forward it to a PLC or cloud gateway. The ATSAML22G17A-MUT's 12-bit ADC, multiple SERCOM (UART/SPI/I2C) interfaces, and Event System let a single MCU poll many sensors with minimal CPU involvement. The wide 1.6V to 3.6V supply accommodates industrial 24V rails via a simple LDO, and the -40C to +85C industrial temperature rating covers most factory environments. DMA-driven SERCOM transfers and SleepWalking ADC compare wake-ups keep idle current below 1 mA even with multiple sensors polled.

Notas de diseño

Decouple every supply pin of the ATSAML22G17A-MUT with a 1uF X7R ceramic capacitor placed within 2 mm of the pin. VDDIN supplies the on-chip voltage regulator that generates VDDCORE; a 1uF cap on VDDIN is critical for clean regulation during SleepWalking events. VSW (the regulator switching node) needs its own 1uF cap. Provide separate analog (AVDD) and digital (VDDIO) grounds tied together at a single point near the IC to avoid injecting digital switching noise into ADC readings. Estimated: with three 1uF ceramic caps and one 100nF cap on each SERCOM pair, total BOM cost is under 0.10 USD.

The 48-QFN exposed thermal pad must be soldered to the board ground plane to keep junction temperature in spec. Per Microchip layout guidelines, the pad should contain at least eight 0.3 mm thermal vias arranged in a 3x3 grid connecting to a 1 square inch copper plane on the opposite side of the PCB. At 39 uA/MHz active current and 3.3 V supply, typical full-speed power is only 4 mW, so thermal management is rarely a concern - the via pattern matters more for electrical grounding than heat dissipation. Estimated: with a 1 square inch 1 oz copper plane, theta_JA drops to ~30 C/W, well within the -40 C to +85 C industrial range.

Route the USB D+/D- pair (PA24/PA25) as a 90-ohm differential pair with no stubs, keeping them short and matched within 150 mil. Place the 27-ohm series termination resistors and the USBLC6-2SC6 ESD protection array as close to the USB connector as possible. The SWDIO/SWDCLK pair (PA29/PA30) should also be kept short and routed away from switching signals to support clean firmware debug. Avoid routing the segment LCD signals under noisy traces - they are sensitive to capacitive coupling which can cause ghost segments on the display.

Do not leave the RESET_N line floating - it requires an external 10 kohm pull-up to VDDIO. Failure to provide a clean reset will cause boot failures and unpredictable behavior on power-up. The SERCOM I/O pins are multiplexed and must be configured via the PORT multiplexer before use; configuring a peripheral function on the wrong pin group is a common source of 'dead GPIO' debugging sessions. Always enable the brown-out detector (BOD33) in firmware to safely recover from low-voltage brown-out events on battery-powered designs.
