DSPIC33CH128MP503T-I/M5 Descripción general
A Digital Signal Controller (DSC) is a hybrid microcontroller that combines a deterministic 16-bit MCU with a single-cycle DSP engine. The dsPIC33CH family extends this concept with two DSC cores on one die, enabling tight closed-loop control (digital power, motor drive) on the slave while the master handles host communication, housekeeping and user interface. As a member of the broader microcontroller hierarchy, the dsPIC33CH sits above single-core dsPIC33F/CK and competes with high-end Cortex-M4F parts when dual-core deterministic partitioning is required.
Key features include dual 200 MHz dsPIC33C cores, 128 KB Flash, 16 KB + 4 KB RAM split, four 16-bit high-resolution PWM generators (250 ps resolution), four DMA channels, three UART/SPI/I2C, one CAN FD port, one 12-bit ADC with up to 3.5 Msps, and a 3 V to 3.6 V supply range with -40 C to +85 C industrial temperature grade. The high-resolution PWM is the defining feature for digital-power and field-oriented control of motors.
Typical applications include digital switch-mode power supplies (PFC + LLC on the slave, telemetry on the master), sensorless and sensored BLDC/PMSM motor control, wireless charging, drone ESC controllers, and LED lighting drivers that demand both fine-grained analog-loop control and a host-side communication processor. According to the Microchip product page, the family is optimized for digital power, motor control, wireless power, server PSUs and drones.
When designing with this device, dedicate the slave core to the time-critical control loop (PWM update + ADC sample) and the master core to application/communication tasks to avoid jitter. The exposed pad of the UQFN-36 must be soldered to a continuous ground pour for thermal and electrical reference. Pinout and programming interface are documented in the manufacturer datasheet.

Aplicaciones típicas
DSPIC33CH128MP503T-I/M5 es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: Digital Switch-Mode Power Supply (PFC + LLC), BLDC / PMSM Motor Control (FOC), Drone Electronic Speed Controller (ESC), Wireless Charging Transmitter (Qi / AirFuel), Server / Telecom Power Supply Unit, High-End LED Lighting Driver.
Digital Switch-Mode Power Supply (PFC + LLC)
The DSPIC33CH128MP503T-I/M5 is well matched to bridgeless totem-pole PFC and resonant LLC converters because its 250 ps high-resolution PWM can synthesize the variable-frequency drive needed for soft switching, while the dual-core split keeps the current loop deterministic. The slave core samples the 12-bit ADC at 3.5 Msps, updates PWM duty and handles valley skipping at sub-microsecond cadence; the master core executes UART/PMBus telemetry, manages inrush sequencing and runs the housekeeping state machine. This deterministic partitioning is precisely what Microchip targets on the dsPIC33CH product page for digital-power and server-PSU applications.

BLDC / PMSM Motor Control (FOC)
Field-oriented control of a BLDC or PMSM motor requires a fixed 10 to 20 kHz current loop that must never be delayed by host-stack activity. The DSPIC33CH128MP503T-I/M5 dedicates its slave core to the FOC loop: Park/Clarke transforms, SVPWM modulation and ADC-trigger sequencing all run there at 200 MHz with the 250 ps HRPWM synthesizing the inverter switching edges. The master core handles UART/CAN FD communication with the host controller, fault logging and the user-facing API, so the slave loop is never preempted. The 5x5 mm UQFN-36 footprint fits compact drone ESCs and integrated servo drives.
Recomendado
Drone Electronic Speed Controller (ESC)
Drone ESC firmware combines a real-time FOC motor loop with propeller-balance compensation, battery telemetry and a command-link parser. The DSPIC33CH128MP503T-I/M5 lets the slave core own the FOC loop at 200 MHz with HRPWM, freeing the master core to run the DShot/OneShot protocol stack and balancing algorithm without ever stalling the torque loop. The industrial -40 C to +85 C temperature grade covers outdoor flight conditions, and the small 5x5 mm UQFN footprint leaves board area for the gate drivers and current shunts. Microchip explicitly lists drones as a target application for the dsPIC33CH family on the product page.

Wireless Charging Transmitter (Qi / AirFuel)
Resonant wireless-power transmitters need precise zero-voltage switching and tight gain control of the LC tank. The DSPIC33CH128MP503T-I/M5 drives the full-bridge at the resonant frequency using its 250 ps HRPWM and runs the foreign-object detection algorithm and Qi protocol negotiation on the master core while the slave core holds the resonant tank in tune. The CAN FD peripheral is convenient for in-vehicle wireless charging modules that must talk to the body controller, and the 36-pin UQFN package is small enough to fit inside a smartphone charging puck.

Server / Telecom Power Supply Unit
Hot-swap server and telecom PSUs require a tightly regulated 12 V or 48 V intermediate bus with PMBus telemetry. The DSPIC33CH128MP503T-I/M5 executes the average-current-mode control loop on the slave core with HRPWM edge placement, while the master core services PMBus, ACF or ARI and runs the inrush/hold-up sequencing. The CAN FD port supports newer telemetry stacks, and the 3 V to 3.6 V supply matches the auxiliary rail already present in 1U/2U server supplies. The dual-core split prevents a PMBus interrupt from ever perturbing the regulation loop.

High-End LED Lighting Driver
Architectural and horticultural LED drivers require both a precise current-control loop and a rich feature set (DMX, DALI, Bluetooth Mesh). The DSPIC33CH128MP503T-I/M5 runs the constant-current loop with HRPWM on the slave core and the DMX-512 / DALI / wireless stack on the master core. The 12-bit 3.5 Msps ADC is sufficient for high-side current sensing with sub-1% accuracy, and the small UQFN-36 footprint allows the driver electronics to fit inside the fixture housing alongside the LEDs.

Notas de diseño
The 36-pin UQFN package has a central exposed pad that must be soldered to a continuous copper pour on the PCB for thermal dissipation. With both cores active at 200 MHz, the device can dissipate approximately 0.5 W to 0.8 W depending on peripheral activity. Use at least 1 oz copper and a ground plane of at least 100 mm^2 under the exposed pad to keep the junction below 125 C in industrial -40 C to +85 C environments. Thermal vias under the pad are recommended for additional heat transfer to inner layers.
Place the 0.1 uF and 10 uF decoupling capacitors as close as possible to each VDD/VSS pair (pins 5/6, 18/19, 33/34) and to the AVDD/AVSS pair (pins 11/12). Keep the high-speed ADC traces (AN0-AN5) short and isolated from PWM switching traces by a ground guard ring. The crystal or external clock traces at pins 13/14 must be routed with matched length and a ground guard to minimize jitter on the 200 MHz PLL output.
Do not skip programming the slave core at boot - the master core must initialize the slave via the MSI (Master-Slave Interface) registers before any slave interrupts can fire. A common pitfall is to leave the slave in reset while developing firmware, which makes it appear that PWM outputs are missing. Also ensure the high-resolution PWM configuration registers are written with the correct PCLKDIV ratio; otherwise the 250 ps resolution degrades to 8 ns.
The CAN FD bus on pins 20 and 21 requires a CAN transceiver (e.g. MCP2542FD or ATA6560) between the DSC and the bus; the DSC pins are not 5 V tolerant and must never be connected directly to a 12 V vehicle bus. Add a common-mode choke and split termination if the bus runs longer than 1 m, and verify the bit-timing parameters against the transceiver's loop delay to keep the CAN FD data-phase sample point at 70 to 80 percent.
