EFM32G232F64-QFP64 Descripción general

The Silicon Labs EFM32G232F64-QFP64 is an ARM Cortex-M3 based 32-bit microcontroller (MCU) running up to 32 MHz, with 64 kB Flash (64K x 8), 16 kB RAM and 53 digital I/O pins, supplied in a 64-TQFP (10x10 mm) package operating from 1.98 V to 3.8 V. It belongs to the EFM32 Gecko family, a low-power 32-bit MCU platform built around energy-conscious techniques, fast wake-up times and multiple energy-saving modes.

An MCU (microcontroller) is a single integrated circuit containing a CPU core, program memory, data memory and peripherals. In the taxonomy a microcontroller is a type of integrated circuit and semiconductor, and within that group it sits beside memory ICs, interface ICs, ADC/DAC and clock & timing devices. The Gecko family specifically targets energy-sensitive embedded systems where average current draw, not just peak performance, determines battery life.

Key features of this device include a 32 MHz ARM Cortex-M3 core with integrated sleep and stop modes, 64 kB of flash for firmware and 16 kB of SRAM for working memory, three 16-bit timers, and hardware AES support as noted in the Mouser listing for this part number. A wide 1.98 V to 3.8 V supply range makes the part usable across 2.5 V and 3.3 V system rails, and the 64-TQFP 10x10 mm footprint keeps the board area small while exposing 53 GPIO for sensors, actuators and communications.

Technically the part belongs to the Gecko series, whose energy-saving modes and fast wake-up behaviour are the differentiating architectural features versus generic Cortex-M3 devices. Because the device is available in a 64-pin TQFP, designers get both fine-grained pin multiplexing and a package that is straightforward for automated assembly, pick-and-place and visual inspection, unlike fine-pitch QFN or BGA options.

Typical applications include low-power sensor nodes and IoT end devices, industrial monitoring and control modules, building and energy metering equipment, portable and wearable accessories, and USB-connected peripheral controllers where the 53 available I/O pins allow several peripherals to share one package.

A key design consideration is that the flash capacity and RAM size define how much application code and data buffering fit on the die; designs that need large buffers should consider the 128 kB and 256 kB members of the Gecko family instead of this 64 kB variant.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, verified drop-in alternatives, pin-level guidance and practical design notes that are not found together in the manufacturer datasheet, helping engineers shorten BOM and layout decisions for EFM32G232F64-QFP64.

Aplicaciones típicas

EFM32G232F64-QFP64 es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: Low-Power IoT Sensor Node, Industrial Sensor Gateway, Smart Energy Meter, USB-Coupled Peripheral Controller, Wearable and Health Monitor, Motor and Actuator Control Subsystem.

🧩

Low-Power IoT Sensor Node

The EFM32G232F64-QFP64 fits wireless sensor nodes because the Gecko platform adds sleep and stop modes plus fast wake-up times on top of the 32 MHz Cortex-M3 core, and 16 kB RAM is enough for most protocol stacks and sample buffers. The 1.98 V to 3.8 V supply span supports both 2.5 V and 3.3 V coin-cell or energy-harvesting front ends, while 53 GPIO allow the radio, sensor and status LEDs to share one package. Place 100 nF decoupling close to VDD and VDDA, and keep the radio module antenna section well away from the 32 MHz clock routing to preserve wake-up timing accuracy.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Gateway

For DIN-rail or panel-mounted gateways, the EFM32G232F64-QFP64 gives you 53 digital I/O and three 16-bit timers in a single 64-TQFP (10 x 10 mm) device, enough to aggregate several 4-20 mA inputs, drive relay outputs and run a local protocol stack without an external FPGA. Its 1.98 V to 3.8 V operating range means it can be fed from a 3.3 V industrial rail with tolerance, and the 64 kB flash holds bootloader plus field-upgrade logic. The 64-pin TQFP land pattern is easy to route on 1.6 mm FR-4 and to inspect optically during factory testing.

⚡

Smart Energy Meter

Metering designs benefit from the EFM32G232F64-QFP64 because its 16 kB RAM absorbs rolling energy accumulation data while the 64 kB flash stores calibration tables and multi-protocol firmware, and the 53 GPIO can drive LCD segment drivers, pulse counters and tamper-detection lines directly. Fast wake-up lets the MCU sleep between measurement intervals and react immediately to a metering pulse, keeping average current low in battery-assisted designs. Verify analog front-end scaling against the 1.98 V minimum supply, because headroom at the bottom of the range is the binding constraint for shunt-amp gain stages.

🔌

USB-Coupled Peripheral Controller

As a bridge MCU for USB-connected accessories, the EFM32G232F64-QFP64 provides a 32 MHz Cortex-M3 with enough I/O to run a USB device stack alongside button, LED and display handling, and its 1.98 V to 3.8 V range simplifies powering from a 3.3 V USB rail. Because the Gecko part enters low-power states between transactions, it avoids the idle current penalty of continuously clocked alternatives, which matters for bus-powered devices. Keep the USB data pair routed as a short, matched 90 ohm differential pair on the top layer and provide local bulk capacitance at the connector.

💊

Wearable and Health Monitor

In a wearable or health-monitoring device, the EFM32G232F64-QFP64 lets you run sensor fusion, filtering and BLE-adjacent stack code in a single part thanks to 64 kB flash and 16 kB RAM, while the Gecko energy-saving modes reduce the drain on a small rechargeable cell. The 53 GPIO support multiple analogue front ends, haptic drivers and capacitive touch pads through the device's peripheral mix. Keep the accelerometer and analog traces away from the 32 MHz clock and use the internal analog ground reference carefully, since a small package at 10 x 10 mm limits decoupling placement.

⚙️

Motor and Actuator Control Subsystem

The EFM32G232F64-QFP64 suits compact actuator controllers because three 16-bit timers plus 53 GPIO can drive stepper or BLDC commutation, capture encoder pulses and manage limit switches from a single 64-pin device, and the fast Cortex-M3 execution closes current-control loops at 32 MHz. The 1.98 V to 3.8 V range fits a 3.3 V gate-driver and sensor rail, while 16 kB RAM holds a commutation table. Keep the power stage and its high dv/dt switching node separated from the MCU ground, and provide a bulk ceramic plus bulk electrolytic at the regulator output for current pulses.

The EFM32G232F64-QFP64 is a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M3 microcontroller from Silicon Labs operating up to 32 MHz with 64 kB flash (64K x 8) and 16 kB RAM. According to the Silicon Labs EFM32 Gecko product page and DigiKey listing, the device provides 53 digital I/O pins, three 16-bit timers and a 1.98 V to 3.8 V supply range in a 64-TQFP (10 x 10 mm) surface-mount package. The Gecko series emphasises low-power operation with sleep and stop modes plus fast wake-up times, which is the primary reason to select it over a generic Cortex-M3 MCU.
What is the supply voltage range of EFM32G232F64-QFP64?
The EFM32G232F64-QFP64 operates from 1.98 V to 3.8 V as listed by Silicon Labs and distributor specification data. This range covers both 2.5 V and 3.3 V designs without needing a separate level shifter or regulator. The wide span also means the same part can be used across products with different rail voltages, provided the decoupling and I/O drive limits from the manufacturer datasheet are respected for each operating point.
How much memory does the EFM32G232F64-QFP64 have?
The EFM32G232F64-QFP64 provides 64 kB of flash (64K x 8) and 16 kB of RAM, according to the Silicon Labs device specification page. The 64 kB figure corresponds to the 'F64' code in the part number, and the 16 kB RAM is consistent across the Gecko family. Code space is therefore adequate for a bootloader plus a compact application, but designs needing large log buffers or rich graphics should move up to the 128 kB or 256 kB Gecko variants.
Where can I download the EFM32G232F64-QFP64 datasheet?

Pricing for the EFM32G232F64-QFP64 as of 2026-10-28 starts at roughly USD 6.92 in single-unit quantities and falls to about USD 4.85 at 100 units and USD 3.05 at 3,000 units, based on distributor listings for this part number. Distributor prices fluctuate with inventory and volume breaks, so treat these figures as reference points as of the stated date. Volume pricing typically improves further through negotiated supply agreements with the manufacturer.
EFM32G232F64-QFP64 vs EFM32G232F64-QFP64T - what is the difference?
The EFM32G232F64-QFP64 and EFM32G232F64-QFP64T are the same EFM32G232F64 silicon in the same 64-TQFP (10 x 10 mm) package, differing only in the shipping format. The base part is supplied in tray packaging while the -T suffix denotes the tape-and-reel ordering code used for pick-and-place and high-volume automated assembly. Compare parts listings confirm both are 32-bit ARM Cortex-M3, 64 kB flash, 64-pin surface-mount devices, so they are electrically and pin-compatible.
When should I choose EFM32G232F64-QFP64 over the EFM32TG232F32-QFP64T?
Choose the EFM32G232F64-QFP64 when your firmware and data buffers exceed the 32 kB flash and smaller RAM of the EFM32TG232F32-QFP64T; the G232F64 doubles flash to 64 kB and provides 16 kB RAM. Both are Cortex-M3 devices at up to 32 MHz in 64-pin TQFP packages, so software porting effort is small. Conversely, if 32 kB flash suffices, the Tiger variant is the more cost-effective choice since the Gecko part's extra memory is not used.
Is EFM32G232F64-QFP64 suitable for low-power IoT and sensor applications?
Yes. The EFM32G232F64-QFP64 is explicitly targeted at energy-sensitive applications by Silicon Labs, combining Gecko low-power techniques, energy-saving modes and fast wake-up times with 53 GPIO for connecting sensors and radios. With a 1.98 V to 3.8 V supply span it fits both 2.5 V and 3.3 V coin-cell and energy-harvesting designs. Actual average current depends on the duty cycle and the peripherals left running, so measure it in your final firmware configuration.
What is the best Silicon Labs equivalent for the EFM32G232F64-QFP64?
The closest Silicon Labs equivalent in the same 64-pin TQFP (10 x 10 mm) footprint is the EFM32LG232F64G-E-QFP64, a Leopard Gecko device with 64 kB flash and 16 kB RAM at up to 32 MHz. Because both share the 64-TQFP package and Cortex-M3 core, the mechanical side of the swap is trivial, but the peripheral set differs, so verify every peripheral and pin multiplex used in your design before substituting.
Can the EFM32TG842F32-QFP64 replace the EFM32G232F64-QFP64?
The EFM32TG842F32-QFP64 is not a full drop-in replacement for the EFM32G232F64-QFP64, although both are 64-pin TQFP Cortex-M3 MCUs running at up to 32 MHz. The Tiger part carries only 32 kB of flash versus 64 kB on the Gecko and belongs to a different series with a different peripheral set, so firmware and pin-mux review is mandatory. Treat it as a migration candidate rather than a transparent drop-in swap.
How does the EFM32G232F64-QFP64 compare to the EFM32G222F64-QFP48?
The EFM32G222F64-QFP48 offers the same 64 kB flash class and Cortex-M3 performance but in a 48-pin package, so it cannot replace the EFM32G232F64-QFP64 on the same PCB footprint. The G232F64-QFP64 provides 53 digital I/O in a 64-TQFP (10 x 10 mm) outline, while the QFP48 option exposes fewer pins and requires a different land pattern and layout. Use the G232F64-QFP64 when pin count matters; use the 48-pin part when you are willing to redesign the board.
What peripherals does the EFM32G232F64-QFP64 include?
The EFM32G232F64-QFP64 includes three 16-bit timers, 53 digital I/O pins and hardware AES encryption support as reported in distributor specification data for this part number. Silicon Labs positions the Gecko family around low-power operation with fast wake-up and energy-saving modes. The complete peripheral list, including USART, I2C, SPI and analog blocks, is itemised in the Silicon Labs EFM32G2xx datasheet; confirm the exact instances and pin multiplexing there for your configuration.
Does the EFM32G232F64-QFP64 support automotive AEC-Q100 qualification?
The EFM32G232F64-QFP64 is an industrial/consumer grade part and is not AEC-Q100 qualified, so it is not suitable for harsh automotive environments without additional sourcing. The device is RoHS and REACH compliant and lead-free as reflected in its compliance listings. If you need an automotive-rated microcontroller in a comparable low-power ARM Cortex-M3 class, specify a part explicitly marked AEC-Q100 grade rather than assuming the Gecko G232 family carries that qualification.
What tooling and ecosystem supports the EFM32G232F64-QFP64?
The EFM32G232F64-QFP64 is supported by the Silicon Labs Simplicity Studio and EFM32 firmware development ecosystem, which includes the Gecko SDK, start-up files, energy profiling tools and the Simplicity Debugger probe. Silicon Labs also supplies a Wake-Up Interrupt Controller and low-energy peripherals documented in the manufacturer reference material. Because the Gecko SDK is shared across the family, code written for other EFM32G2xx devices ports with minimal change when moving to this 64 kB flash / 16 kB RAM configuration.
How does the 64-TQFP package of the EFM32G232F64-QFP64 affect PCB design?
The 64-TQFP (10 x 10 mm) package keeps the EFM32G232F64-QFP64 within the same board area as most 48 to 64-pin MCUs, and its 0.5 mm pitch, gull-wing leads are visually inspectable and easily hand-soldered compared with QFN or BGA options. The trade-off is lead length, which adds a small amount of parasitic inductance on fast-switching nets. Keep decoupling capacitors close to VDD and VDDA pins, and route high-current and sensitive analog lines away from the clock and debug nets.

Guía de selección

Choose the EFM32G232F64-QFP64 when you need an ARM Cortex-M3 MCU at 32 MHz with 64 kB flash, 16 kB RAM and 53 GPIO in a 64-pin TQFP, particularly for low-power IoT and industrial designs that benefit from Gecko sleep/stop modes and fast wake-up. Choose the EFM32G232F64-QFP64T instead when your assembly line requires tape-and-reel presentation - the silicon is identical. Choose the EFM32LG232F64G-E-QFP64 if you want a newer Leopard Gecko generation with the same memory sizes and package but a different peripheral mix. Choose the EFM32TG232F32-QFP64T or EFM32TG842F32-QFP64 only if 32 kB flash and 8 kB RAM are sufficient, since both halve the memory headroom. No cross-brand drop-in equivalent was verified in the available data, so an MCU platform change (for example to an STM32) should be treated as a redesign with firmware porting, not a substitution.

Notas de diseño

The EFM32G232F64-QFP64 accepts 1.98 V to 3.8 V, so a single part covers 2.5 V and 3.3 V rails, but the 1.98 V floor is the binding constraint for analog headroom. Provide a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor at each VDD pin and a bulk 4.7 uF to 10 uF capacitor near the supply entry point. Separate VDDA from VDD with a ferrite bead and its own 100 nF plus 1 uF pair if an analog sensor front end is present, so switching supply noise on the digital rail does not inject into the analog reference.

In a 64-TQFP (10 x 10 mm) land pattern there is little room for decoupling, so place the 100 nF ceramic parts inside the ring of pins nearest their VDD/VGND pairs and keep the traces short and wide. Keep the 32 MHz crystal or oscillator loop on the adjacent side of the package with a solid ground guard, and route the SWD programming header (SWDIO, SWCLK, NRST) away from high dv/dt switching nodes. Because TQFP lead inductance adds parasitics at fast edges, avoid long stubs on peripheral lines.

The most common design errors are firmware-related rather than electrical: firmware that exceeds the 64 kB flash budget of the F64 variant, and buffers that exceed the 16 kB SRAM. Second, developers frequently assume every GPIO is usable simultaneously because the datasheet lists 53 digital I/O pins - the actual simultaneous pin count depends on the selected peripheral alternate functions, so verify the multiplexing table for your specific USART, SPI, I2C and timer assignments before committing to a pin map.

Estimated: at a 3.3 V supply, 32 MHz operation and typical GPIO loading, the Cortex-M3 core dissipation is on the order of a few tens of milliwatts, so the 64-TQFP package self-heats negligibly in an ambient of 25 C to 40 C. The thermal constraint in a design is therefore not the MCU but the surrounding regulators and any high-current peripherals on the same board. Keep the regulator thermal pad area free of copper-isolated voids and avoid mounting the TQFP directly over a hot power device on a two-layer board.
