MAX1396MTB+T Descripción general

The Maxim Integrated MAX1396MTB+T is a 1.5V-to-3.6V, 312.5ksps, 12-bit successive-approximation analog-to-digital converter (SAR ADC) housed in a 10-pin TDFN (HVSON) package. It supports a 1-channel true-differential or 2-channel single-ended input configuration and operates from a single 1.5V to 3.6V supply, drawing only 690uA (typ) at full throughput.

An SAR ADC is a type of analog-to-digital converter that uses a binary search algorithm implemented with a sample-and-hold amplifier, comparator, and a capacitive DAC. SAR ADCs sit within the broader hierarchy: ADC -> data converter -> mixed-signal IC. They are prized for low-latency, deterministic conversion - unlike sigma-delta ADCs that require digital filtering and exhibit higher latency, a SAR ADC produces a single conversion result per acquisition cycle, making it well suited to multiplexed data-acquisition and control applications.

Key features of the MAX1396MTB+T include an integrated 3.84MHz internal oscillator, automatic power-down between samples (reducing supply current to <1uA at lower conversion rates), and an SPI/QSPI/MICROW-HICROWIRE-compatible serial interface. True-differential input operation simplifies interface to bridge sensors and thermocouples, while the wide 1.5V-to-3.6V supply range suits both lithium-ion and 3.3V digital systems. The device achieves at least 70dB SINAD and operates across the -40C to +85C commercial extended or -55C to +125C military temperature grade (the 'M' grade part).

The MAX1396MTB+T utilizes a charge-redistribution capacitive DAC array combined with a high-bandwidth track-and-hold amplifier, achieving 312.5ksps throughput with no pipeline delay. The internal 3.84MHz oscillator eliminates the need for an external clock, and an on-chip reference buffer supports both internal 2.5V reference and external reference modes for system-flexibility.

Typical applications include portable battery-powered instrumentation, 4-20mA industrial sensor loops, thermocouple and RTD signal conditioning, programmable logic controller (PLC) analog input cards, and handheld medical monitoring devices. The micropower architecture and automatic shutdown make it ideal for any low-duty-cycle data-acquisition node.

When designing with this device, place 0.1uF bypass capacitors as close as possible to the AVDD and DVDD pins. Note that the part enters automatic shutdown at the end of each conversion when CS is held high, reducing idle current to less than 1uA - critical for battery-powered applications. The TDFN-10 package exposes a thermal pad on the underside that should be tied to the analog ground plane for optimal noise rejection.

This page synthesizes distributor availability, parametric comparison, and practical design notes specific to the MAX1396MTB+T, complementing the manufacturer datasheet with a cross-brand drop-in view to ease second-source qualification.

📱

Portable Battery-Powered Instrumentation

The MAX1396MTB+T's 1.5V-to-3.6V single-supply operation and 690uA active supply current make it a strong fit for portable battery-powered instrumentation. Its automatic power-down between conversions drops supply current below 1uA when CS is held high, so duty-cycled sampling preserves battery life across months of field deployment. The 312.5 ksps throughput supports sampling multiple sensor channels in rapid succession with deterministic SAR latency (no pipeline delay), critical for time-correlated multi-sensor reads. The internal 3.84MHz oscillator eliminates an external clock part, reducing BOM cost and PCB area. Compared to sigma-delta ADCs at similar throughput, the MAX1396MTB+T offers faster wake-to-result response, suiting handheld DMMs, portable gas detectors, and field data loggers that prioritise single-shot, deterministic conversion timing over multi-Hz averaging. The 12-bit resolution provides 4096 codes, sufficient for 0.1%-accuracy instrumentation when paired with proper front-end signal conditioning.

🏭

4-20mA Industrial Sensor Loops

The MAX1396MTB+T's true-differential input mode is well matched to 4-20mA current-loop receivers and bridge sensor front-ends. By accepting differential signals directly across AIN+ and AIN-, the part rejects common-mode noise induced along industrial cabling - critical in factory environments with motor drives and switching contactors. The 12-bit resolution yields approximately 0.024% FS quantisation, while 312.5 ksps throughput enables oversampling for SNR enhancement or simultaneous sampling of multiple loop channels. The 1.5V-to-3.6V supply supports loop-powered architectures where the ADC draws from the loop current itself. Industrial compliance considerations include operation over the M-grade -55C to +125C temperature range, ensuring reliable operation in unheated enclosures. The SPI-compatible serial interface simplifies galvanic isolation by allowing the digital signals to cross an optocoupler or digital isolator barrier with only 4 lines, reducing isolation component count.

💊

Thermocouple and RTD Signal Conditioning

Thermocouple and RTD temperature measurements demand high common-mode rejection and true-differential input capability, both of which the MAX1396MTB+T delivers natively. The differential input rejects thermocouple common-mode voltages that arise from ground potential differences between sensor and measurement instrument, an essential feature when measuring across isolated junctions. The 12-bit resolution supports approximately 0.25C discrimination with a K-type thermocouple (40uV/C), suitable for industrial thermal monitoring. The 312.5 ksps throughput enables periodic high-resolution samples with no pipeline latency, important for control loops that must react in real time to thermal excursions. The M-grade -55C to +125C operating range permits deployment in harsh industrial environments, while the 1.5V-to-3.6V supply works directly from 3.3V logic rails without a separate analog regulator. The internal 2.5V reference eliminates an external reference IC for cost-sensitive designs.

🏭

PLC Analog Input Modules

Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) analog input cards typically require 4-50 mA current loops and 0-10V voltage inputs with 12-16 bit resolution. The MAX1396MTB+T provides 12-bit resolution at 312.5 ksps, sufficient for 4-8 channel multiplexed input cards scanning at 100 Hz per channel with significant margin. Its SPI-compatible serial interface enables a single microcontroller or FPGA to digitise many channels by sequencing through external analog multiplexers, reducing per-channel BOM. The differential input mode simplifies direct connection to bridge-type pressure and strain sensors used in process control. The TDFN-10 package occupies approximately 9 mm^2 of PCB area, enabling dense analog input cards with 8-16 channels per square inch. The M-grade temperature rating supports deployment in industrial cabinets that may experience elevated ambient conditions during summer operation. RoHS compliance ensures the part can be used in new PLC designs targeting global markets.

💊

Handheld Medical Monitoring Devices

Handheld medical devices such as pulse oximeters, glucose meters, and ECG event recorders demand low-power, single-supply ADCs with deterministic SAR conversion latency. The MAX1396MTB+T fits these constraints with 690uA active supply current, sub-1uA shutdown current, and 1.5V-3.6V single supply compatible with both Li-ion and coin-cell batteries. Deterministic SAR latency is essential for medical signal acquisition where pipeline delays would obscure time-correlated events like QRS complexes or SpO2 plethysmographic peaks. The 12-bit resolution supports 0.024% FS quantisation, suiting pulse oximeter SpO2 calculations and ECG R-wave amplitude measurements. The TDFN-10 (3x3 mm) package is small enough for wrist-worn devices and disposable patches. The M-grade -55C to +125C temperature range supports sterilisation autoclave cycles and outdoor emergency response use cases where temperature extremes are routine.

🧩

IoT Sensor Nodes and Edge Devices

IoT edge nodes and wireless sensor networks require micropower data converters capable of operating from energy-harvested or coin-cell sources for months or years. The MAX1396MTB+T's automatic power-down between conversions drops idle current below 1uA, enabling duty-cycled sampling schemes where the ADC wakes, samples, transmits, and sleeps for the majority of the duty cycle. The 1.5V-to-3.6V supply range works with single-cell Li-ion, two-cell alkaline, and coin-cell lithium chemistries. The internal 3.84MHz oscillator eliminates external clock components, reducing the BOM footprint critical for miniature IoT nodes. The 312.5 ksps throughput supports burst sampling modes where multiple channels are rapidly scanned at low duty cycle. The SPI-compatible serial interface integrates directly with low-power microcontrollers like the MAX32660 and STM32 families. Compared to integrated MCU ADCs, the MAX1396MTB+T provides a 12-bit true-differential input with dedicated track-and-hold, often delivering better noise performance than MCU internal ADCs.

🖥️

Data Acquisition Systems

Multi-channel data acquisition (DAQ) systems digitise analog signals from sensors, transducers, and process instrumentation for logging or control. The MAX1396MTB+T serves as a per-channel or multiplexed SAR ADC in modular DAQ front-ends, providing 312.5 ksps sampling with no pipeline delay - important for transient capture and control-loop feedback applications. The 1-channel true-differential or 2-channel single-ended input flexibility allows designers to configure channels based on signal source - use differential for high-noise industrial environments, single-ended for clean benchtop instrumentation. The SPI/QSPI/MICROWIRE-compatible serial interface enables daisy-chaining multiple MAX1396 parts for higher channel counts, with CS framing each conversion for synchronous sampling. The M-grade temperature range supports ruggedised field-portable DAQ units. The TDFN-10 3x3 mm package supports compact DAQ card designs with high channel density per square inch of PCB area.

Notas de diseño

Place a 0.1uF ceramic bypass capacitor as close as possible to both the AVDD and DVDD pins, with a 10uF bulk capacitor on the analog supply rail. The MAX1396MTB+T automatically powers down between samples if CS is deasserted, dropping idle current below 1uA - critical for battery-powered applications. Holding CS low continuously keeps the device in full-power mode (approximately 690uA). For best noise performance, drive AVDD from a low-noise LDO rather than directly from a switching regulator.

Route the analog ground (AGND) and digital ground (DGND) separately back to a single point at the ADC's AGND/DGND pins, not at the power-supply ground. The exposed thermal pad on the underside of the TDFN-10 package must be soldered to a copper pad tied to analog ground for thermal dissipation and ground reference. Keep analog input traces short and shielded with a guard trace tied to AGND to minimise digital switching noise coupling into the analog front-end.

Do not connect CS, SCLK, or DOUT directly to a 5V logic signal - the MAX1396MTB+T's serial interface operates at DVDD levels (1.5V to 3.6V), and 5V signals will damage the input ESD diodes. Use a level shifter if interfacing with 5V microcontrollers. Do not float the REF pin when using the internal 2.5V reference - it must have a 0.1uF bypass capacitor to AGND even in internal reference mode. Driving the AIN+/AIN- inputs beyond AVDD+0.3V or below AGND-0.3V will degrade linearity and may damage the input ESD structure.

For optimal true-differential mode performance, drive AIN+ and AIN- from matched low-impedance sources. Mismatched source impedances cause differential gain errors and degrade common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR). If the source is single-ended, tie AIN- to AGND through a capacitor and drive only AIN+ with the signal. Add a 100 ohm series resistor on each analog input pin to dampen amplifier kickback from the internal sample-and-hold switches.
