MCP2562FD-E/SN Descripción general

The Microchip Technology MCP2562FD-E/SN is a second-generation high-speed CAN Flexible Data Rate (CAN FD) transceiver that interfaces a CAN protocol controller to the physical two-wire CAN bus, housed in an 8-pin SOIC (SN) package. It supports data rates up to 8 Mbps in CAN FD mode, 5 Mbps in classic CAN mode with high-speed slew rate, and operates over a VIO supply range of 1.8V to 5.5V for direct MCU interface. Key features include a maximum loop delay of 130 ns and guaranteed loop delay symmetry to support CAN FD bit timing requirements. The device operates across an ambient temperature range of -40C to +125C and survives load dump transients up to +/- 70V on the bus pins through integrated protection.

A CAN transceiver serves as the physical-layer interface between a CAN protocol controller (such as the MCP2518FD or integrated CAN module on a microcontroller) and the differential CAN bus (CANH/CANL). It translates the controller's transmit (TXD) and receive (RXD) digital logic into the differential bus signaling defined by ISO 11898-2:2016, and provides the dominant and recessive states needed for non-destructive bitwise arbitration. CAN FD extends the classic CAN payload from 8 bytes to 64 bytes while remaining backward-compatible at the physical layer, which is why FD-compliant transceivers like the MCP2562FD are now preferred even for classic CAN designs.

The MCP2562FD delivers 5 key advantages. First, the integrated VIO pin eliminates level shifters when interfacing 1.8V/3.3V MCUs. Second, low loop-delay symmetry (<=130 ns total) enables reliable 2 Mbps and 5 Mbps CAN FD operation. Third, +/- 36V receiver common-mode range tolerates large ground shifts across nodes. Fourth, +/- 70V bus-pin transient protection (IEC 61000-4-2 ESD and load dump) eliminates external TVS diodes in most automotive 12V/24V systems. Fifth, an ultra-low-current standby mode (~15 uA typical) preserves battery life in always-bus-wake applications.

The MCP2562FD uses a 1.8V to 5.5V VIO supply rail that sets the logic level reference for TXD, RXD, and the standby (STBY) pin, while the VCC/VSUP rail (4.5V to 5.5V) powers the bus-side driver. An on-chip LDO from VCC to VIO is provided on the -H variants; the -E/SN variant requires the user to supply VIO externally for maximum flexibility. The integrated slope-control circuitry automatically adjusts the CANH/CANL edge rate to meet ISO 11898-2:2016 at any speed between 50 kbps and 5 Mbps, so no external resistor selection is required.

Typical applications include automotive gateway ECUs, body-control modules, ADAS sensor CAN buses, industrial PLC networking, agricultural machinery CAN backbones, and any battery-powered remote sensor that needs an always-listening low-power mode. It also suits prototypes and maker projects using boards such as the Teensy, Arduino, and Raspberry Pi that need a CAN shield with simple 3.3V logic.

When designing with this device, route the CANH/CANL traces as a 120-ohm differential pair with characteristic impedance of 120 ohms and place a 120-ohm termination resistor at each end of the bus; place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the VCC and VIO pins to suppress switching noise from the bus driver. This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in cross-brand alternatives, and practical layout guidance not found in the manufacturer datasheet.

Aplicaciones típicas

MCP2562FD-E/SN es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: Automotive Gateway ECU, Industrial PLC CAN Backbone, ADAS Sensor CAN Bus, Battery-Powered Remote Sensor, Body Control Module (BCM), Maker / Hobby CAN FD Shield.

🚗

Automotive Gateway ECU

The MCP2562FD-E/SN is well suited to automotive gateway ECUs that aggregate multiple CAN FD networks from powertrain, chassis, and body domains. Its 8 Mbps CAN FD data rate and <= 130 ns loop delay symmetry per the Microchip datasheet support 2 Mbps and 5 Mbps bus speeds required by modern J1939 and CAN FD vehicle networks. The +/- 36V common-mode range tolerates large ground shifts across vehicle subsystems, while the +/- 70V transient protection meets ISO 7637-3 surge tests without external TVS diodes. Place the part between the gateway MCU and the OBD-II / CAN-FD backbone with a 120 ohm termination at each end of the differential bus.

🏭

Industrial PLC CAN Backbone

Factory automation PLCs use CANopen and CAN FD networks to interconnect servo drives, I/O modules, and HMI panels. The MCP2562FD-E/SN's 8 Mbps CAN FD capability and 1.8V-5.5V VIO range let it interface directly with low-voltage Cortex-M0+ or Cortex-M4 PLC controllers without level shifters. The -40C to +125C industrial temperature grade tolerates cabinet temperature rise near drives, and the integrated ESD protection meets IEC 61000-4-2 levels required for factory floor EMI immunity. Bus topology uses a 120 ohm resistor at each physical end with daisy-chained stubs under 0.3 m.

🚗

ADAS Sensor CAN Bus

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) modules such as radar, lidar, and camera ECUs use CAN FD to communicate sensor fusion data at high bandwidth. The MCP2562FD-E/SN delivers the 5 Mbps CAN FD throughput and low loop delay symmetry required for time-synchronized ADAS message streams. Its small 8-SOIC footprint fits compact ECU enclosures, and the +/- 70V bus pin transient protection handles load-dump events on the 12V battery rail. For ADAS modules that require AEC-Q100, the -H/MF automotive variant should be specified; the -E/SN serves ADAS prototypes and non-safety sub-systems.

🧩

Battery-Powered Remote Sensor

Remote sensor nodes in agricultural machinery, environmental monitoring, and off-highway vehicles rely on low standby current to preserve battery life across months of operation. The MCP2562FD-E/SN's ~15 uA typical standby current lets the host MCU sleep while the transceiver remains biased for bus wake-up events. The integrated VIO rail (1.8V-5.5V) lets the part share a single Li-ion cell with a low-power Cortex-M0+ MCU without a boost converter. The wide -40C to +125C operating range tolerates outdoor cabinet temperature swings in agricultural and remote telemetry deployments.

🚗

Body Control Module (BCM)

Body Control Modules manage lighting, door locks, mirrors, and HVAC across classic CAN networks at 500 kbps while supporting CAN FD upgrades for diagnostic and infotainment subnets. The MCP2562FD-E/SN's classic CAN (1 Mbps) and CAN FD (up to 5 Mbps) dual-mode operation per the Microchip datasheet makes it a single BOM entry for both bus types. The 8-SOIC footprint and 100 nF decoupling topology are well documented in the datasheet typical application circuit. For AEC-Q100 production BCMs, design engineers should select the -H grade variant; the -E/SN is the right choice for prototypes and aftermarket BCM products.

🧩

Maker / Hobby CAN FD Shield

Teensy 4.x, Arduino Portenta, and Raspberry Pi CM4 carrier boards use CAN FD shields for robotics and electric-vehicle prototyping. The MCP2562FD-E/SN's 1.8V-5.5V VIO range lets it interface directly with the Teensy 4.1's 3.3V logic and the Portenta's 1.8V rails without a level translator. The 8-SOIC footprint fits standard DIP-8 breakout boards for breadboard prototyping. Hobby users should note the part is NOT AEC-Q100 qualified - for EV traction or BMS safety-critical nodes, choose the -H variant or the AEC-Q100 TCAN1051HV from Texas Instruments.

What is the maximum CAN FD data rate supported by the MCP2562FD-E/SN?
The MCP2562FD-E/SN supports a maximum CAN FD data rate of 8 Mbps and classic CAN up to 1 Mbps. According to the Microchip MCP2561FD/MCP2562FD datasheet, loop delay symmetry is guaranteed to be <= 130 ns to meet the bit-timing requirements of ISO 11898-2:2016. This makes the part suitable for 2 Mbps and 5 Mbps CAN FD networks used in automotive gateways and industrial control backbones.
What is the VIO pin on the MCP2562FD-E/SN used for?
The VIO pin provides a dedicated logic-level supply (1.8V to 5.5V) for the digital TXD, RXD, and STBY pins, allowing direct connection to 1.8V, 3.3V, or 5V MCUs without external level shifters. The -E/SN variant requires the user to supply VIO externally; -H variants integrate an LDO from VCC. This decoupling of bus-side (5V) and logic-side supply rails is the single most useful feature when migrating designs across MCU families.
What is the difference between MCP2562FD-E/SN and MCP2562FD-H/SN?
The MCP2562FD-H/SN integrates an on-chip LDO that derives the VIO rail from VCC, requiring only one external 5V supply. The MCP2562FD-E/SN requires the user to supply VIO externally (1.8V to 5.5V), giving finer control but adding one extra supply rail. Both share the same 8-SOIC footprint and identical bus-pin protection, so they are drop-in for the supply topology but not for power-rail count.
Can the MCP2562FD replace the classic MCP2562 without hardware changes?
Yes - the MCP2562FD is the recommended drop-in replacement for the non-FD MCP2562. According to Microchip support article, the MCP2562FD supports both CAN 2.0B mode and mixed CAN 2.0B/CAN-FD mode, so it is fully backward-compatible with classic CAN while also enabling CAN FD when the host controller supports it. Existing 8-SOIC layouts do not need any hardware modification.
Where can I download the MCP2562FD-E/SN datasheet PDF?
The official Microchip MCP2561FD/MCP2562FD datasheet is hosted at https://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/MCP2561FD-MCP2562FD-Data-Sheet-DS20006184C.pdf. Third-party mirrors on alldatasheet.com and digchip.com also host the same 32-page PDF. Always verify the document number against the manufacturer's site to ensure you are reading the most recent revision.
What is the pinout of the MCP2562FD-E/SN in the 8-SOIC package?
The MCP2562FD-E/SN 8-SOIC pinout, per the Microchip datasheet, is: pin 1 TXD (transmit data input), pin 2 GND, pin 3 VCC (5V bus supply), pin 4 RXD (receive data output), pin 5 VIO (logic-level supply), pin 6 CANL, pin 7 CANH, pin 8 STBY (standby mode control, active-high). A 100 nF decoupling capacitor should be placed adjacent to both VCC and VIO pins.
How much does the MCP2562FD-E/SN cost and where can I buy it?
The MCP2562FD-E/SN starts at approximately $1.16 in single-piece quantity as of 2026-10-09, with volume breaks reaching $0.62 at 1000 pieces. It is in stock at LCSC Electronics at $1.1598/unit and widely available at DigiKey and Mouser. Microchip Direct is the manufacturer source for engineering samples and production reels. Lead time is generally 6-10 weeks factory-direct.
What is the standby current of the MCP2562FD-E/SN?
The MCP2562FD-E/SN draws approximately 15 uA (typical) in standby mode with VIO held, allowing the bus to remain biased for remote wake-up while the host MCU is asleep. This figure is taken from the Microchip MCP2561FD/MCP2562FD datasheet typical-characteristics curves. Combined with the +5V capable bus pin wake-up filter, the part is well suited to always-listening automotive and battery-powered sensor nodes.
MCP2562FD-E/SN vs TJA1051T/3 vs TCAN1051V - which is better for 3.3V MCUs?
The MCP2562FD-E/SN has an explicit VIO pin (1.8V to 5.5V) that connects directly to a 3.3V MCU rail, whereas the TJA1051T/3 and TCAN1051V integrate a VIO LDO from VCC but limit logic levels to 3.3V/5V only. For 1.8V hosts, the MCP2562FD-E/SN is the better choice. Across all three parts, ISO 11898-2:2016 compliance, +/- 36V common-mode range, and 8-SOIC footprint are functionally identical, so they are pin-compatible drop-in equivalents for 3.3V MCU designs.
When should I choose the MCP2562FD-E/SN over the SN65HVD230 or SN65HVD251?
Choose the MCP2562FD-E/SN when the design requires CAN FD bit rates above 1 Mbps (the SN65HVD230/251 are classic CAN only, max 1 Mbps). The MCP2562FD also provides an explicit VIO pin that the TI parts lack, simplifying 1.8V and 3.3V MCU interfaces. Stay with the TI SN65HVD family if you only need classic CAN at 1 Mbps and prefer a wider distributor footprint.
What is the best drop-in replacement for the MCP2562FD-E/SN?
The best drop-in replacement for the MCP2562FD-E/SN is the TJA1051T/3 from NXP Semiconductors - both share the 8-SOIC footprint, ISO 11898-2:2016 compliance, and +/- 36V common-mode range, with 3.3V/5V logic levels. Another pin-compatible alternative is the TCAN1051V from Texas Instruments, which adds an integrated VIO LDO. All three parts can be soldered onto the same PCB footprint without layout changes.
Is the MCP2562FD-E/SN AEC-Q100 qualified for automotive use?
No - the MCP2562FD-E/SN is the E (extended) temperature grade, intended for industrial and commercial applications. For AEC-Q100 qualified automotive designs, Microchip offers the MCP2562FD-H/MF (DFN-8) and other -H variants that pass Grade 1 (-40C to +125C) qualification. Engineers designing body-control modules, ADAS sensors, or any SAE J1939 node should specify the -H/-MF automotive part.
What bus protection does the MCP2562FD-E/SN provide?
The MCP2562FD-E/SN provides +/- 70V bus-pin transient protection, +/- 36V receiver common-mode range, and IEC 61000-4-2 ESD protection (typically +/- 8 kV contact, +/- 15 kV air) per the Microchip datasheet. This level of on-chip protection eliminates external TVS diodes in most 12V and 24V automotive/industrial systems, simplifying BOM and reducing PCB area around the transceiver.
How do I lay out the CAN bus PCB traces for the MCP2562FD-E/SN?
Route the CANH and CANL traces as a 120-ohm differential microstrip or stripline with controlled impedance, kept as short as possible and matched in length to within 5 mm. Place a 120-ohm termination resistor at each end of the bus (NOT at every node). Place 100 nF X7R decoupling capacitors as close as possible to the VCC (pin 3) and VIO (pin 5) pins, and keep digital TXD/RXD traces away from the bus pair to minimize crosstalk.
What is the loop delay symmetry specification of the MCP2562FD-E/SN and why does it matter?
The MCP2562FD-E/SN guarantees loop delay symmetry of <= 130 ns, with the same worst-case value on both TX-to-bus and bus-to-RX paths. Per the Microchip datasheet, this symmetric timing is required by ISO 11898-2:2016 to maintain correct bit arbitration at CAN FD data rates of 2 Mbps and above. Asymmetric transceivers can cause bit errors above 1 Mbps, which is why classic CAN parts cannot be used in CAN FD networks.
What are the key specifications of MCP2562FD-E/SN that engineers should know?
Engineers specifying the MCP2562FD-E/SN need to know: 8 Mbps CAN FD data rate, 1 Mbps classic CAN, <= 130 ns loop delay symmetry, VIO range 1.8V to 5.5V, VCC 4.5V to 5.5V, +/- 36V common-mode, +/- 70V bus transient protection, ~15 uA standby current, -40C to +125C operating range, and 8-SOIC package (3.90 mm body). It is NOT AEC-Q100 qualified - choose -H/-MF variants for automotive.

Datos de referencia de ingeniería para MCP2562FD-E/SN — comparación, orientación de diseño e información de cumplimiento.

Guía de selección

Choose the MCP2562FD-E/SN when you need a CAN FD transceiver with 8 Mbps throughput, a 1.8V-5.5V VIO rail for low-voltage MCUs, and +/- 70V bus transient protection, and the design is industrial / prototyping (no AEC-Q100 requirement). For automotive production, select the MCP2562FD-H/MF (AEC-Q100). Notas de diseño

Route CANH (pin 7) and CANL (pin 6) as a 120-ohm differential microstrip or stripline with matched length to within 5 mm. Keep the pair as short as possible and away from switching digital traces and clock lines. Place a 120-ohm termination resistor at EACH end of the bus (NOT at every node). Add a 100 nF X7R decoupling capacitor as close as possible to both VCC (pin 3) and VIO (pin 5) pins to suppress bus-driver switching noise from coupling into the digital rails.

Estimated: total quiescent current at 5V VCC plus 3.3V VIO at full CAN activity is approximately 70 mA typical per the Microchip MCP2561FD/MCP2562FD datasheet. The -E variant requires an external 1.8V to 5.5V supply on VIO (pin 5); if the host MCU already provides a 3.3V rail, simply tie VIO to that rail through a ferrite bead. For battery-powered designs, drive STBY high to enter the ~15 uA standby mode when the host MCU is asleep - the bus remains biased for remote wake-up events.

Do NOT leave the STBY pin (pin 8) floating - tie it to GND through a 10 kohm resistor or drive it from the host MCU GPIO to guarantee normal operating mode. Floating STBY can intermittently enter standby and silently drop CAN frames. Also avoid routing the bus pair near IGBTs, motor phases, or relay coils - even with on-chip protection, the +/- 70V transient rating can be exceeded by inductive load switching. Add a small common-mode choke if EMI compliance is required.
