PIC16C77-10/PT Descripción general

The Microchip Technology PIC16C77-10/PT is a CMOS OTP-based 8-bit microcontroller from the PIC16C7X family, executing instructions in 200 ns at a 20 MHz clock. The device integrates 14 KB of one-time-programmable (OTP) program memory, 368 bytes of RAM, 33 digital I/O lines, and an 8-channel 8-bit Analog-to-Digital (A/D) converter, all packaged in a 44-pin TQFP (PT) surface-mount housing. Peripheral support includes two 8-bit timers, one 16-bit timer, two Capture/Compare/PWM (CCP) modules, a synchronous serial port configurable as 3-wire SPI or 2-wire I2C, and a USART for asynchronous serial communications.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer built around an 8-bit data path, well suited to cost-sensitive embedded control tasks such as motor control, sensor interfacing, and human-machine interfaces. PIC microcontrollers in particular combine a RISC-style instruction set (35 single-word instructions for the PIC16C7X family) with separate program and data buses (Harvard architecture), yielding deterministic instruction timing that simplifies real-time firmware development. Within the broader taxonomy, the PIC16C77 belongs to the PIC microcontroller family, itself a sub-family of 8-bit microcontrollers within the larger category of microcontrollers and integrated circuits.

The PIC16C77-10/PT differentiates itself from the PIC16C76 sibling primarily through expanded memory (14 KB EPROM versus 8 KB) and a larger pin count, while remaining instruction-set and footprint compatible with earlier PIC16C5X and PIC12CXXX devices. Wide operating voltage support (2.5 V to 6.0 V), 25 mA source/sink current per I/O, and low-power modes (standby current of 1 µA typical at 3 V / 32 kHz) enable the part to serve battery-backed and industrial environments. Industrial and Extended temperature grades are available, suiting automotive body electronics, appliance control, and instrumentation front-ends.

Typical applications include industrial control panels, HVAC fan and damper control, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) front-panel logic, sensor-signal conditioning, and low-cost motor drive interfaces. Designers migrating from PIC16C5X designs gain additional peripheral capability (A/D, CCP, USART) without a learning curve, while those targeting flash-reprogrammable equivalents can move directly to the PIC16F77, which Microchip identifies as the recommended successor for new designs.

When designing with this device, plan for OTP programming infrastructure: a windowed (UV-erasable) variant is unavailable, so firmware must be fully validated before programming. Ensure adequate decoupling (100 nF plus 10 µF bulk) on VDD, keep analog and digital supply traces short, and reference Microchip application notes for CCP PWM and A/D acquisition timing. Aplicaciones típicas

PIC16C77-10/PT es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: Industrial Control Panels, HVAC Fan and Damper Control, UPS Front-Panel Logic, Sensor Signal Conditioning Hub, Low-Cost Motor Drive Interface, Appliance Control Boards.

🏭

Industrial Control Panels

The PIC16C77-10/PT fits industrial control panels because of its 33 I/O lines and 8-channel 8-bit A/D converter, which can scan multiple potentiometers, limit switches, and analog sensors concurrently. Its 25 mA source/sink per pin drives LEDs and small relays directly without external buffers. The 20 MHz instruction rate delivers deterministic loop times for PID control loops running at 1 ms sample intervals. OTP programming locks firmware for regulatory traceability. Estimated: at 5 V / 20 MHz, core current draw is approximately 13 mA, manageable from a 78L05 regulator without thermal concerns.

🏭

HVAC Fan and Damper Control

The PIC16C77-10/PT suits HVAC damper and fan control because its two CCP modules generate independent PWM outputs to drive triac phase-angle circuits and BLDC fan drivers. The 8-channel A/D reads thermistor/resistive temperature sensors at slow sample rates (one conversion every 100 ms is sufficient for thermal mass). Standby current of 1 µA at 3 V / 32 kHz enables battery-backed RTC operation during power loss. Industrial temperature grade variants support unconditioned mechanical rooms. The OTP memory prevents accidental field reprogramming in safety-critical installations.

⚡

UPS Front-Panel Logic

The PIC16C77-10/PT serves as front-panel logic in small UPS systems, where the USART interfaces to a host inverter controller and the A/D monitors battery voltage and current via external shunts. Its 33 I/O lines drive multi-segment LCD or LED status panels, accept pushbutton inputs, and toggle buzzer alarms. The wide 2.5 V to 6.0 V supply range tolerates unregulated battery rails directly. OTP program memory prevents firmware tampering. Brown-out detection and the watchdog timer add robustness in electrically noisy battery environments.

🧩

Sensor Signal Conditioning Hub

The PIC16C77-10/PT acts as a sensor-conditioning hub in distributed industrial nodes: 8 analog inputs multiplex through the 8-bit A/D, while the SPI/I2C synchronous serial port reads digital sensors and the USART forwards processed data to a master controller or RS-485 transceiver. The 14 KB program memory accommodates moderate state-machine firmware including calibration tables. CCP modules generate precision timing pulses for ultrasonic or photoelectric sensors. Low standby current suits solar-powered remote installations running intermittent sampling.

🏭

Low-Cost Motor Drive Interface

The PIC16C77-10/PT interfaces with low-cost brushed DC and stepper motor drivers, using its two CCP PWM channels to set speed reference and direction. Hall-effect or encoder feedback connects through PORTB interrupt-on-change pins for closed-loop control. The 20 MHz instruction rate supports trapezoidal commutation profiles for small BLDC motors at up to 30,000 RPM electrical. Industrial-grade parts survive under-hood automotive environments. OTP prevents field modification of safety-rated parameters such as maximum RPM.

🏭

Appliance Control Boards

The PIC16C77-10/PT powers appliance control boards (washing machines, dishwashers, small kitchen equipment), where 33 I/O pins drive 7-segment displays, keypads, and triac-fired heater relays. The 8-channel A/D reads water level, temperature, and motor current. OTP program memory locks the appliance firmware to comply with regulatory certification, preventing unauthorized parameter changes. Wide voltage tolerance handles rectified 24 V mains-derived rails. Industrial and extended temperature grades support unheated laundry environments.

The PIC16C77-10/PT integrates 14 KB of one-time-programmable (OTP) EPROM for program storage. According to the Microchip PIC16C7X datasheet (DS30325E), the device addresses this memory through a 14-bit program counter and supports 35 single-word instructions. Unlike flash-based PIC16F77, OTP requires verified firmware before programming.
What is the operating voltage of PIC16C77-10/PT?
The PIC16C77-10/PT operates from 2.5 V to 6.0 V across commercial, industrial, and extended temperature grades. The Microchip datasheet specifies full-speed operation up to 20 MHz at 5 V, with reduced frequency at lower VDD. A 5 V typical design supports all peripheral features including the 8-channel 8-bit A/D converter.
How many I/O pins does PIC16C77-10/PT have?
The PIC16C77-10/PT provides 33 general-purpose digital I/O pins across PORTA, PORTB, PORTC, PORTD, and PORTE. Each pin can source or sink 25 mA, which is sufficient to drive LEDs, small relays, and optocouplers directly. PORTE shares pins with A/D converter analog inputs, reducing effective digital I/O when the A/D is active.
Does PIC16C77-10/PT have an A/D converter?
Yes, the PIC16C77-10/PT includes an 8-channel 8-bit Analog-to-Digital converter with 8-bit resolution and successive approximation architecture. Channels share PORTE pins; channel selection and conversion start are firmware-controlled. The A/D is suitable for slow sensor sampling such as temperature, potentiometers, and battery monitoring.
What is the difference between PIC16C77-10/PT and PIC16F77-I/PT?
The PIC16C77-10/PT uses 14 KB OTP EPROM while the PIC16F77-I/PT uses 14 KB Flash program memory and adds 256 bytes of EEPROM. Both share the same 44-pin TQFP footprint and PIC16C7X instruction set, so firmware is largely portable. Microchip recommends the PIC16F77 for new designs because Flash allows in-system reprogramming, unlike OTP.

Notas de diseño

Estimated: at 5 V VDD and 20 MHz operation, the PIC16C77-10/PT draws approximately 13 mA core current plus I/O loading. Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of each VDD/VSS pair (4 pairs on the 44-pin TQFP) and a 10 µF bulk tantalum or ceramic capacitor at the supply entry point. For battery-backed standby operation, use the SLEEP instruction and reduce clock to 32 kHz via Timer1 to achieve 1 µA typical standby current. Ensure VDD rise time during power-on is monotonic to satisfy brown-out reset requirements.

The 44-pin TQFP (PT) package has a 0.8 mm lead pitch and exposed thermal pad (die paddle) on the underside. The thermal pad MUST be soldered to a PCB copper pad to achieve mechanical reliability and thermal performance. Recommended PCB layout uses a star-ground topology with separate analog (AVDD/AVSS) and digital supplies if the A/D converter is used; route analog inputs away from digital switching lines and keep the A/D reference capacitor within 10 mm of VREF+/VREF- pins.

Three pitfalls catch first-time PIC16C77 users: (1) The OTP program memory cannot be erased - validate firmware on a flash-based PIC16F77 or windowed PIC16C77/JW prototype before committing to OTP. (2) PORTE pins share analog inputs; configuring a PORTE pin as digital disables the corresponding A/D channel. (3) The MCLR pin is bidirectional on some PIC16C7X variants - if not used as reset, configure it as input only with the internal MCLR disabled. Read configuration word settings from the datasheet (DS30325E) carefully before programming.
