PIC16CE623-04I/SS Descripción general

The Microchip PIC16CE623-04I/SS is an 8-bit RISC microcontroller from the PIC16C family with 896 bytes of one-time-programmable (OTP) program memory, 128 bytes of EEPROM data memory, and 96 bytes of RAM, packaged in a 20-pin SSOP (0.209 inch / 5.30mm width) for surface-mount designs. It executes instructions at 4 MHz from a 4 MHz internal oscillator, supporting industrial temperature range operation from -40C to +85C at 2.5V to 5.5V supply. The device exposes 13 general-purpose I/O pins, a 5-channel 8-bit ADC, and on-chip EEPROM that makes it suitable for applications requiring non-volatile parameter storage.

A microcontroller (MCU) is an integrated circuit that combines a CPU core, program memory, data memory, and configurable peripherals on a single die, allowing designers to embed intelligence in any electronic product. The PIC16CE62X family belongs to Microchip's mid-range 8-bit RISC architecture and sits inside the broader category of microcontrollers, embedded controllers, and finally integrated circuits. Within the product hierarchy, this part is a one-time-programmable (OTP) variant that uses EPROM technology for program storage combined with a separate EEPROM array for user data, a pattern Microchip uses to differentiate reprogrammable (FLASH) and OTP/EPROM members of the same pin-compatible family.

Key specifications include 4 MHz maximum clock, 13 I/O lines multiplexed with ADC inputs, a hardware USART/SCI port on higher pin-count variants, two 8-bit timers plus one 16-bit timer, a 5-channel 8-bit analog-to-digital converter, and an internal EEPROM rated at 1 million erase/write cycles typical. The device draws approximately 2 mA active at 5V/4MHz and falls to a few microamps in sleep mode, making it well-suited for line-powered or battery-tolerant industrial controls. The SSOP-20 footprint is JEDEC-standard and shared with many PIC16C/16F siblings, simplifying PCB reuse.

The architecture uses a Harvard design with separate program and data buses and a 14-bit instruction word, executing most instructions in a single clock cycle for a throughput of about 4 MIPS at 4 MHz. Peripherals are accessed through a memory-mapped SFR block. Brown-out reset, power-on reset, watchdog timer with on-chip RC oscillator, and code protection are all integrated. Compared with newer PIC16F1xxx parts that share the SSOP-20 footprint, the PIC16CE623 retains its position where OTP, lower cost, and proven legacy code bases are valued over in-application reprogrammability.

Typical applications include appliance control boards, security panel keypads, low-end remote controls, sensor signal conditioners with on-chip EEPROM calibration storage, and industrial instrumentation that requires digital I/O and a small ADC. The on-chip EEPROM makes this part attractive for designs where manufacturing calibration data or user preferences must persist across power cycles. The wide operating voltage and industrial temperature range also suit HVAC controllers, smart metering peripherals, and 4-20 mA loop-powered sensor nodes.

When designing with this part, ensure your programmer supports OTP/EPROM devices, since the program memory cannot be erased and rewritten once blown. For prototyping or field-updatable firmware, consider the FLASH-based PIC16F628 or PIC16F648A in the same SSOP-20 footprint as development parts, then move to PIC16CE623-04I/SS for volume production where the per-unit cost benefit of OTP outweighs in-system reprogrammability.

Aplicaciones típicas

PIC16CE623-04I/SS es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: Appliance Control Board, Security Keypad / Access Control Panel, Sensor Signal Conditioner with EEPROM Calibration Storage, HVAC Controller Peripheral, Smart Metering Peripheral, Low-End Remote Control / IR Transmitter.

🏭

Appliance Control Board

The PIC16CE623-04I/SS fits appliance controls where its 13 GPIO and 5-channel 8-bit ADC can read sensors, drive relays, and run state-machine firmware in a compact SSOP-20 footprint. Its 896-byte OTP memory holds the full appliance algorithm, while 128 bytes of on-chip EEPROM store calibration, last-mode, and user-preference data that survives power cycles without an external EEPROM. At 5V/4MHz it draws ~2 mA active and only a few microamps in sleep, helping the appliance meet standby-power limits. The industrial -40C to +85C grade survives motor-driven heat and refrigerator-cold environments.

🎥

Security Keypad / Access Control Panel

Security keypads need a low-pin-count MCU that can scan a 4x4 matrix, drive a buzzer or LED, and remember access codes across power loss. The PIC16CE623-04I/SS supplies 13 GPIO that scan a 4x4 matrix with interrupt-on-change wake-up, plus 128 bytes of EEPROM ideal for storing 4-8 user PINs and tamper counters. Its low sleep current extends battery backup time when AC fails. Compared with discrete logic, the CE623 reduces part count to one IC and a few passives, lowering both BOM cost and assembly time.

🏭

Sensor Signal Conditioner with EEPROM Calibration Storage

Industrial sensor modules (pressure transducers, RTD front ends, gas detectors) often need a small MCU to linearize analog readings and store calibration constants in non-volatile memory. The PIC16CE623-04I/SS combines a 5-channel 8-bit ADC for bridge or thermistor excitation, plus 128 bytes of EEPROM that can hold per-unit offset and gain coefficients. Its 2.5-5.5 V supply lets it run directly from a 3.3 V or 5 V sensor rail. The OTP memory locks the calibration algorithm at production, preventing field tampering with safety-critical math.

🏭

HVAC Controller Peripheral

HVAC peripherals such as zone dampers, smart thermostats, and air-quality modules benefit from the PIC16CE623-04I/SS's industrial -40C to +85C range and 5V tolerance. The MCU can read thermistor or VOC sensor channels through its 8-bit ADC, drive TRIAC optocouplers or 24 VAC relays via GPIO, and store setpoint profiles in EEPROM so the controller resumes correctly after a brown-out. The SSOP-20 footprint fits inside the cramped zone-board enclosures typical of fan-coil units.

⚡

Smart Metering Peripheral

Smart metering peripherals (e.g., a pulse-counting or tamper-detection module hanging off a main meter) can use the PIC16CE623-04I/SS to debounce reed-switch or Hall-effect inputs and accumulate counts in EEPROM to survive brown-outs. The 8-bit ADC also reads battery voltage for low-battery alerts. Low sleep current (a few uA) extends coin-cell life in wireless AMI peripherals. OTP memory locks the metering math to certified firmware, an advantage for regulatory submetering.

📱

Low-End Remote Control / IR Transmitter

Universal remote controls, IR/RF transmitters, and consumer remote key fobs need a tiny MCU with low cost and low power. The PIC16CE623-04I/SS offers 13 GPIO for button matrix scanning, on-chip EEPROM to store learned-device codes, and an interrupt-on-change peripheral to wake from sleep on button press. The SSOP-20 package fits inside the slim PCB of a remote handset. OTP memory prevents reverse engineering of the IR protocol code, protecting proprietary RC-5/RC-6 or vendor-custom protocols.

Notas de diseño

OTP EPROM program memory cannot be erased after programming - any code bug gets locked into every shipped unit. Develop and fully debug on the FLASH-based PIC16F628A-I/SS first, then port the frozen firmware to PIC16CE623-04I/SS for production. Allow budget for programming the OTP at the contract manufacturer (e.g., Data I/O or BP Microsystems programmer) and verify each programmed unit with a checksum test before system integration.

Estimated: at 5 V / 4 MHz the PIC16CE623-04I/SS draws ~2 mA active and a few microamps in sleep, so a 1 mA coin-cell-backed supply cannot sustain continuous operation. For battery-powered remote controls, design the firmware to wake on interrupt, do work in <2 ms, and return to sleep so the average current stays below 50 uA. Brown-out reset (BOR) should be enabled in the configuration word to avoid EEPROM corruption during weak-battery brown-outs.

Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor as close as possible between VDD (pin 14) and VSS (pin 5) of the SSOP-20 footprint. Keep the analog AVdd/DGND pair (where applicable) routed with a wide ground pour under the SSOP body to reduce ADC noise. If using the ADC, avoid routing digital I/O traces under the analog inputs and add a small RC filter (10 ohm + 100 nF) on noisy analog channels.

The SSOP-20 package has a low thermal mass and theta_JA of approximately 100 C/W, so self-heating is negligible at 2 mA active. However, if the part is mounted inside a sealed enclosure with limited airflow (e.g., a meter box), the ambient temperature inside the enclosure must remain below +85 C for reliable industrial operation. Derate by 10-15 C if the device sits next to a power transformer or relay bank.
