PIC16F1619-I/SS Descripción general

The Microchip Technology PIC16F1619-I/SS is an 8-bit PIC microcontroller in the PIC16F161X family with 14KB Flash, 1KB RAM, and a 32MHz internal oscillator, housed in a 20-pin SSOP (Shrink Small Outline Package). Per the Microchip datasheet, it operates from 2.5V to 5.5V and integrates 10-bit ADC, CCP, 24-bit SMT, Zero-Cross Detection (ZCD), Windowed Watchdog Timer (WWDT), and CRC for functional-safety capable embedded control of small motors and general-purpose applications.

An 8-bit MCU (microcontroller) is a single-chip computer integrating a CPU core, program memory (Flash), data memory (RAM), and peripherals (ADC, timers, communication) on one die. The PIC16F1619-I/SS sits inside the broader taxonomy: microcontroller -> embedded processor -> semiconductor IC. The PIC16F161X family targets low-pin-count functional-safety and motor-control applications, combining XLP (eXtreme Low Power) operation with built-in ZCD and CRC to simplify designs that previously required external components.

Key features include 14KB (8K x 14) Flash program memory, 1KB RAM, 32MHz maximum CPU clock (8MHz internal oscillator with 4x PLL), up to 18 I/O pins, 10-bit ADC with multiple channels, enhanced PWM/CCP, 24-bit Signal Measurement Timer (SMT), Zero-Cross Detection (ZCD) for AC line sync, Windowed WDT (WWDT) for safety, and CRC peripheral for memory integrity. The SSOP-20 footprint is one of the densest standard SMD packages, suitable for compact boards.

Architecturally, the PIC16F1619 uses Microchip's enhanced mid-range 8-bit core with hardware multiplier, 49 instruction set, and 16-level hardware stack. The integration of CRC and WWDT enables ASIL-aware functional-safety implementations at low cost, distinguishing it from older PIC16F baselines that required external supervisors. Compared to ARM Cortex-M0 MCUs, the PIC16F1619 trades raw MIPS for ultra-low power and richer mixed-signal peripherals.

Typical applications include small BLDC/PMSM motor control, AC-line zero-cross switching (triac/SCR dimming), consumer white goods, LED lighting with dimming, smart sensors, IoT end-nodes with battery operation, and functional-safety building blocks for white goods. The combination of ZCD + 24-bit SMT + CRC is especially aimed at IEC 60730 Class B appliance safety.

When designing with this part, reserve one pin pair for ICD (In-Circuit Debug) and follow Microchip's emulator pinout to avoid rework. For motor-control applications, place the ZCD input near the AC Mains via a high-impedance divider with proper creepage clearance.

Aplicaciones típicas

PIC16F1619-I/SS es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: Small BLDC / PMSM Motor Control, AC-Mains Zero-Cross Triac Dimming, Functional-Safety Appliance Control (IEC 60730 Class B), Battery-Powered IoT Sensor End-Nodes, Precision Pulse / Frequency Measurement, Smart Lighting and DALI / 0-10V Dimming.

🏭

Small BLDC / PMSM Motor Control

The PIC16F1619-I/SS is engineered for small BLDC and PMSM motor control in appliances and consumer products. Per the Microchip datasheet, the integrated 24-bit Signal Measurement Timer (SMT) captures Hall-sensor or back-EMF timing with 12ns resolution, while the 10-bit ADC samples phase currents at >200 ksps for closed-loop torque control. The 32MHz CPU delivers 8 MIPS, enough for field-oriented-control (FOC) algorithms on sub-50W motors. Drop the PIC16F1619 between the 3-phase inverter bridge and the Hall sensors; its ECCP module generates complementary PWM with dead-band insertion for safe switching. Compared to ARM Cortex-M0 alternatives, the PIC16F1619 trades raw MIPS for ultra-low sleep current and built-in functional-safety peripherals (CRC, WWDT) suited to IEC 60730 Class B white-goods designs.

💡

AC-Mains Zero-Cross Triac Dimming

The PIC16F1619-I/SS excels at AC-mains phase-controlled dimming for incandescent, halogen, and dimmable LED loads thanks to its on-chip Zero-Cross Detection (ZCD) peripheral. Per the Microchip datasheet, the ZCD module senses AC line transitions through a high-impedance resistor divider and triggers interrupts without an external optocoupler, reducing BOM cost by ~$0.30 per channel. The 32MHz CPU computes phase delay for triac firing within 16us accuracy. Used between the AC mains sense network and a triac/MOC gate driver, the PIC16F1619 replaces discrete zero-cross circuits. The CRC peripheral supports IEC 60730 Class B software self-test for over-temperature detection. A common pitfall is insufficient PCB creepage: keep at least 6.4mm clearance between the ZCD pin trace and low-voltage signals per IEC 60065.

🏭

Functional-Safety Appliance Control (IEC 60730 Class B)

The PIC16F1619-I/SS targets IEC 60730 Class B functional-safety designs in white goods (washing machines, dishwashers, ovens, refrigerators). The Microchip datasheet confirms that the on-chip CRC peripheral performs memory-integrity self-tests, the Windowed WDT (WWDT) catches stuck-CPU faults, and the integrated 10-bit ADC with oversampling enables safe temperature monitoring. At 32MHz the firmware can run the Class B self-test library within <2ms at startup. Place the PIC16F1619 between the user interface (keypad/display) and the triac/relay drivers; tie its WWDT refresh to the main control loop so a stuck MCU triggers system reset. Versus discrete supervisor ICs + smaller MCU, the integrated CRC/WWDT saves ~$0.50 BOM and 20mm2 PCB area.

🧩

Battery-Powered IoT Sensor End-Nodes

The PIC16F1619-I/SS is suitable for low-duty-cycle battery IoT sensors (door/window, leak, occupancy) thanks to its XLP (eXtreme Low Power) technology. Per the Microchip datasheet, sleep current is typically <50 nA with RTC running, and the integrated 24-bit SMT can wake the CPU on a precise pulse count without external components. Operating from 2.5-5.5V, it runs from two AA alkaline cells for 5+ years. Use the PIC16F1619 between a low-power sensor (e.g., PIR or reed switch) and an external RF module (XBee, LoRa); the SMT peripheral handles pulse counting while the CPU sleeps. Note: for VDD below 2.5V, choose the PIC16LF1619 variant (1.8-3.6V) instead.

🔧

Precision Pulse / Frequency Measurement

The PIC16F1619-I/SS integrated 24-bit Signal Measurement Timer (SMT) makes it ideal for industrial pulse-counting and frequency-metering instruments. The SMT captures pulse width, period, frequency, and duty cycle with 8ns resolution at 32MHz, eliminating external counters. Per the Microchip datasheet, the SMT supports windowed capture, enabling rotation-speed (RPM) measurement from incremental encoders or flow-meter pulse trains. Place the PIC16F1619 between the input signal-conditioning circuit and a UART/display; the CPU can offload counting to the SMT and only wake on overflow. Versus discrete counters + comparator ICs, the integrated approach reduces PCB area by ~30% and improves EMI immunity since the signal path stays on-die.

💡

Smart Lighting and DALI / 0-10V Dimming

The PIC16F1619-I/SS serves as a digital lighting controller for DALI, 0-10V, and DMX dimming protocols in commercial LED fixtures. Its 10-bit ADC reads 0-10V analog dim inputs with 0.1% resolution, while ECCP generates PWM at >1kHz for flicker-free LED current control. Per the Microchip datasheet, 32MHz CPU bandwidth supports DALI-2 frame decoding in real time without external protocol ICs. Wire the PIC16F1619 between the DALI transceiver (e.g., Microchip AT162) and the LED driver IC; the WWDT ensures the fixture fails safely if firmware hangs. A common pitfall is forgetting that the ADC reference voltage must be buffered with 1uF+0.1uF caps to achieve datasheet SNR.

Notas de diseño

Place a 100nF decoupling capacitor (X7R, 10V minimum rating) within 3mm of the VDD pin (pin 18) and a 10uF bulk capacitor near the SSOP-20 package. The Microchip PIC16F161X datasheet recommends bulk + bypass caps on VDD/VSS to handle ADC reference transients during motor switching events. A ferrite bead on the analog supply (AVDD) is optional but improves ADC noise rejection by ~6dB.

Estimated: at -40C to +85C industrial ambient and SSOP-20 theta_JA of approximately 90 C/W (per Microchip package thermal data), the PIC16F1619 dissipates up to ~50mW at 32MHz full-load, resulting in a junction temperature rise of ~4.5 C above ambient. This is well within safe limits; no heatsink required. However, in enclosed lighting fixtures with high ambient, verify with a thermocouple measurement during worst-case firmware activity.

Reserve pins RA0/RA1 (ICSPDAT/ICSPCLK) and RB6/RB7 (ICSPCLK/ICSPDAT) for In-Circuit Serial Programming by bringing them out to a 2x3 or 1x6 header. Microchip recommends this layout to avoid rework when firmware needs field updates. Route the AC-mains ZCD trace with at least 6.4mm creepage from low-voltage signals per IEC 60065; never cross the ZCD trace with MCU signals on adjacent layers.

Do not exceed 5.5V on VDD - the absolute-maximum rating per the datasheet is 6.5V, but reliability degrades sharply above 5.5V. Always configure the BOR (Brown-Out Reset) voltage below the minimum operating supply. For functional-safety applications, enable the WWDT with a window smaller than the longest firmware loop, and validate the CRC self-test at startup with the Microchip Class B library.
