PIC16F1705-I/SL Descripción general

The Microchip Technology PIC16F1705-I/SL is a cost-effective 8-bit intelligent-analog flash microcontroller in a 14-pin SOIC (SL) package. It combines 14KB of Flash program memory, 1024 bytes of RAM, an 8-bit CPU core running at up to 32 MHz, and on-chip analog peripherals including operational amplifiers, a 10-bit ADC with computation, 8-bit/10-bit PWMs and Core Independent Peripherals (CLC, COG, Zero-Cross Detect). The device is part of the PIC16 XLP (eXtreme Low Power) family, delivering typical sleep currents in the nanoampere range.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, non-volatile program memory, working RAM, and a configurable set of digital and analog peripherals. Within the broader taxonomy, the PIC16F1705 belongs to the 8-bit MCU category, which sits below 32-bit MCUs in processing capability but excels in deterministic interrupt latency, low power, and low BOM cost. The PIC16F1705 series specifically targets "intelligent analog" applications where on-chip op amps, DACs, ADCs and PWM generation reduce or eliminate external analog ICs.

Key features of the PIC16F1705-I/SL include 12 I/O pins, Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) for flexible signal routing, an integrated temperature indicator, an enhanced mid-range CPU instruction set (49 instructions / 16 stack levels), and a wide operating voltage range of 2.3V to 5.5V. The XLP nanoWatt technology provides multiple low-power modes (Sleep, Doze, Idle, and Peripheral Module Disable) suitable for battery-powered and energy-harvesting designs.

Typical applications include sensor signal conditioning (using the on-chip op amps as gain/buffer stages), LED lighting control (using COG for constant-current regulation), battery chargers, small motor control loops, and IoT edge nodes where low sleep current is critical. The PIC16F1705-I/SL is the SOIC-14 variant of the PIC16F1705 family, which also ships in PDIP-14 (P), TSSOP-14 (ST), and QFN-16 (ML) options.

When designing with this part, plan I/O assignment before PCB layout: PPS lets you remap digital peripherals to almost any pin, but analog pins are fixed. The on-chip op amps require careful reference and output routing to avoid loading the ADC inputs. For lowest power, transition the CPU to Sleep and use an interrupt (e.g., ZCD on AC mains) to wake only when needed.

Aplicaciones típicas

PIC16F1705-I/SL es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: Sensor Signal Conditioning with On-Chip Op Amps, Constant-Current LED Lighting Driver, Battery Charger / Battery-Management Front End, Small DC-Motor Speed Control, IoT Edge Node with NanoWatt Sleep, Mains Zero-Cross Detection for TRIAC Dimming.

🏭

Sensor Signal Conditioning with On-Chip Op Amps

The PIC16F1705-I/SL integrates two operational amplifiers that engineers can configure as in-amp stages for thermocouples, RTDs, or bridge sensors, eliminating a separate analog IC and shrinking the BOM. The 10-bit ADC with computation samples the conditioned signal while the CPU sleeps, and an interrupt wakes the device when a threshold is crossed. With nanoWatt XLP sleep current in the sub-microamp range, a 3V coin cell can power a remote sensor node for years. Peripheral Pin Select routes the ADC input to almost any pin, simplifying PCB layout. Estimate: a 2-op-amp instrumentation front-end plus 10-bit ADC converts a +/-50 mV bridge signal to a usable 0-2.5V output for direct MCU processing.

💡

Constant-Current LED Lighting Driver

The Complementary Output Generator (COG) and 10-bit PWM modules on the PIC16F1705-I/SL allow closed-loop constant-current regulation for LED strings without external driver ICs. The COG drives high-side and low-side MOSFETs with programmable dead-band, while the on-chip op amp senses shunt voltage for feedback. The 32 MHz CPU executes PID loops in software, and the 1 KB RAM buffers setpoint curves. The wide 2.3V-5.5V supply supports 3.3V and 5V designs, and PPS lets the firmware remap PWM outputs to any pin without PCB rework.

⚡

Battery Charger / Battery-Management Front End

Battery chargers for Li-ion, NiMH, or lead-acid packs benefit from the PIC16F1705-I/SL's 10-bit resolution, integrated op amps for current and voltage sensing, and PWM outputs for synchronous-rectifier control. The on-chip ADC samples charge current and battery voltage at up to 100K samples/sec, while the COG/CWG module drives the high-side FET with programmable dead-time to prevent shoot-through. Sleep mode drops the supply current to nanoamp levels between samples, extending battery life. The 14-SOIC footprint fits a small PCB and the 5.5V max supply supports USB-powered chargers.

🏭

Small DC-Motor Speed Control

Brushed DC motors up to a few hundred mA can be driven directly by the PIC16F1705-I/SL using the COG (Complementary Output Generator) to produce center-aligned PWM with hardware dead-band control on complementary FET pairs. The on-chip op amp senses motor current via a shunt resistor and feeds the ADC, allowing closed-loop current limiting. The 10-bit ADC and 32 MHz CPU support field-oriented control algorithms. PPS lets designers relocate PWM and feedback pins on the fly, accelerating iteration. With XLP sleep currents below 1 uA, battery-powered motorized products enjoy long standby life.

🧩

IoT Edge Node with NanoWatt Sleep

IoT edge nodes that periodically sense, process, and transmit data fit the PIC16F1705-I/SL perfectly because the XLP nanoWatt technology holds sleep current to sub-microamp levels while retaining RAM. The on-chip ADC and op amp condition the sensor signal, the CPU processes it, and the UART/SPI/I2C module wakes to transmit on demand. The 14-SOIC package (3.9 mm body) fits small form factors like wearable bands or wireless sensor tags. PPS routing makes it easy to share pins between the sensor and the radio without extra glue logic.

💡

Mains Zero-Cross Detection for TRIAC Dimming

The Zero-Cross Detect (ZCD) peripheral on the PIC16F1705-I/SL detects AC mains zero-crossings without a separate optocoupler or external comparator, simplifying dimmer and solid-state-relay designs. Combined with the COG or PWM, the firmware can trigger TRIACs at precise phase angles for leading-edge or trailing-edge dimming. The 32 MHz CPU times the firing delay with sub-microsecond resolution, while the op amp and ADC monitor load current for closed-loop control. The wide supply range supports capacitive-drop power supplies typical of dimmer modules.

Notas de diseño

Estimated: at Vdd=5V, 32 MHz active current is about 3.5 mA for the PIC16F1705-I/SL; in Sleep mode the XLP nanoWatt core drops to roughly 30-50 nA with RAM retention. For battery-operated designs, switch the CPU to Sleep and use a peripheral interrupt (ADC, ZCD, or timer) to wake. Verify exact sleep current on the datasheet curves (typical vs maximum) before committing to battery-life calculations.

Place a 0.1 uF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of the Vdd pin, and a 10 uF bulk capacitor near the MCU supply. For analog designs using the on-chip op amps, add a small ferrite bead between digital Vdd and analog AVdd to keep ADC noise below 1 LSB. The 14-SOIC package exposes 12 I/O on PORTA and PORTC - reserve at least one PORTA pin for the ICD debugger (RA0/RA1) during prototyping.

Do not assume PIC16F1704-I/SL firmware runs unchanged on PIC16F1705-I/SL: although the core is identical, the smaller Flash (7 KB vs 14 KB) and RAM (512 B vs 1024 B) require recompilation and link-time fit check. Also, the PIC16F1705's on-chip op amps require software configuration of the OPAxCON register before use - an uninitialized op-amp output pin may float and inject noise into adjacent analog inputs. Always review the Configuration Words in the datasheet's Special Features section before locking the device.

When routing PWM outputs near analog ADC inputs, keep at least 3 mm of copper clearance or add a ground guard trace to avoid capacitive coupling from 32 MHz fundamental and harmonics. Use Peripheral Pin Select to place PWM outputs on PORTC and ADC inputs on PORTA so they are physically separated on the package. For ZCD mains-detection circuits, place a 1 nF to 10 nF X7R filter cap directly on the ZCD pin to attenuate dv/dt transients.
