PIC16F1788-I/SS Descripción general

The Microchip Technology PIC16F1788-I/SS is an 8-bit PIC16F178X family microcontroller featuring a 32 MHz internal oscillator, 28 KB (16K x 14) of Flash program memory, 2 KB RAM and 256 bytes of EEPROM in a 28-pin SSOP package. The part is qualified for the industrial -40C to +85C operating range and belongs to Microchip's enhanced mid-range core with 49 instructions, 16-level stack, and self-read/write Flash capability.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, non-volatile program memory, working RAM, and a rich set of analog and digital peripherals around a compact core. The PIC16F1788 sits in the PIC16 enhanced mid-range lineage, which itself belongs to the broader 8-bit microcontroller category and ultimately to the embedded computing and semiconductor taxonomy. The -I/SS variant specifically uses the SSOP (Shrink Small Outline Package), a surface-mount plastic package family within the SOIC lineage that is widely used where 28 pins are required but board height and area must remain modest.

Key features include four 16-bit PSMC (Programmable Switch Mode Controller) peripherals for advanced power-conversion timing, an internal 32 MHz oscillator, on-chip 10-bit ADC with computation (ADC^2), 8-bit DAC, two op-amps, two comparators, and a Zero-Cross Detect module. The device supports XLP (eXtreme Low Power) operation with sub-uA sleep currents, making it suitable for battery-powered sensor nodes and metering. Up to 28 I/O pins are available, with hardware PWM, ECCP, and UART/SPI/I2C serial interfaces.

The PIC16F1788 is implemented on a flash-based CMOS process and is supported by Microchip's MPLAB X IDE, MPLAB Code Configurator (MCC), and the XC8 compiler. The PSMC block is the architectural highlight: it allows the MCU to directly drive synchronous buck, boost, half-bridge and full-bridge topologies without an external PWM controller, enabling digital-control-loop-style SMPS designs on an 8-bit core.

Typical applications include industrial LED drivers and lighting controls, switch-mode power supplies (digital PFC, LLC, buck/boost), motor control, sensor conditioning, and home appliances. The combination of internal op-amps and PSMC is particularly attractive for compact, single-MCU power converters that need analog feedback plus digital control.

When designing with this part, allocate sufficient decoupling (100 nF + bulk) near VDD and AVSS pins, and follow the SSOP land pattern in the package drawing. Designers migrating from PIC16F877 should note the different peripheral set and use the device header files supplied with MPLAB X.

⚡

Digital Switch-Mode Power Supplies (SMPS)

The PIC16F1788-I/SS is purpose-built for single-MCU digital control of switch-mode power supplies. Its four 16-bit PSMC (Programmable Switch Mode Controller) blocks can directly generate complementary PWMs with programmable dead-band for synchronous buck, boost, half-bridge and full-bridge topologies, eliminating an external PWM controller. The on-chip 10-bit ADC with computation and two op-amps provide the analog feedback path for voltage-mode and peak-current-mode control loops, while the 32 MHz CPU runs 8 MIPS of control-law code. According to the Microchip datasheet, the PSMC supports programmable blanking, trigger-to-sample timing, and current-reset, which are essential for peak-current-mode and constant-on-time topologies.

💡

LED Lighting and Driver Control

Industrial and architectural LED drivers benefit from the PIC16F1788-I/SS combination of PWM resolution, on-chip op-amps, and PSMC channels. The 16-bit PWM provides fine dimming resolution down to 0.05 percent duty cycle steps, while the op-amps implement current-sense amplification without external components. The zero-cross detect module simplifies TRIAC-dimmable mains LED retrofit designs by detecting AC zero-crossings without extra hardware. The XLP low-power modes (sub-uA sleep) extend battery life in portable lighting products, and the 1.8 V to 5.5 V supply range covers both single-cell Li-ion and 3.3 V/5 V powered fixtures.

🏭

Motor Control (BLDC and Stepper)

Brushless DC and stepper motor controllers benefit from the PIC16F1788-I/SS PSMC peripheral, which generates the complementary PWMs and dead-time needed for 3-phase half-bridges. The 32 MHz core and 8 MIPS throughput are sufficient for sensorless BEMF algorithms on small fans, pumps, and appliance motors. The 2 KB SRAM buffers BEMF sample arrays and PI-controller state variables without slowing the inner loop. Hall-sensor or quadrature-encoder inputs are handled by the CCP and timer peripherals, and the UART/SPI/I2C ports connect to HMI boards or supervisory controllers in the appliance.

🧩

Battery-Powered Sensor Nodes

The PIC16F1788-I/SS eXtreme Low Power (XLP) architecture supports sub-microamp sleep currents, making it suitable for battery-powered wireless sensor endpoints that wake periodically to measure and transmit. The on-chip 10-bit ADC samples thermistor, battery voltage, and sensor outputs with the ADC2 computation engine offloading averaging and threshold checks. The 1.8 V minimum supply supports direct connection to single-cell alkaline or NiMH chemistries, while the 5.5 V upper limit also tolerates 2xAA lithium packs. Sleep current around 50 nA (typical per datasheet) extends coin-cell lifetime to multi-year timeframes in metering and IoT nodes.

📱

Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning

The two on-chip operational amplifiers, two comparators, 10-bit ADC, and 8-bit DAC on the PIC16F1788-I/SS allow it to perform complete analog signal conditioning for thermocouple, RTD, strain-gauge, and 4-20 mA loop sensors. The op-amps implement gain stages or active filters without external components, the comparators detect thresholds for alarm generation, and the DAC provides excitation offsets. UART/SPI/I2C ports then forward processed data to a host PLC, gateway, or display. The 28-pin SSOP gives enough analog channels to handle multi-sensor boards while keeping the BOM small.

🏭

Home Appliance Control Boards

Washing machines, induction cooktops, microwave ovens, and other white goods use the PIC16F1788-I/SS as the main control MCU because its PSMC drives IGBT or MOSFET power stages directly, its op-amps sense currents, and its UART links to the user interface board. The -I industrial temperature grade handles under-cabinet heat of cooktops and washing-machine motors. The robust peripheral set replaces discrete timer/control ICs, simplifying BOM and firmware maintenance. Microchip's long-term 8-bit PIC supply commitment supports 10+ year appliance production runs.

✈️

HVAC Fan and Blower Control

Variable-speed HVAC fans and blowers run closed-loop control on the PIC16F1788-I/SS using its PSMC PWM to drive the power FET and the on-chip op-amp for current feedback. The ADC monitors tachometer or back-EMF signals to estimate rotor speed, and the 8-bit DAC outputs a reference voltage for open-loop V/Hz profiles. XLP sleep mode keeps standby power below regulatory limits when the fan is off. The 28-SSOP footprint is small enough to fit inside integrated motor-control modules.

Notas de diseño

Decouple VDD with a 100 nF ceramic capacitor placed within 3 mm of the pin, plus a 10 uF bulk capacitor on the supply rail. The PIC16F1788-I/SS operates from 1.8 V to 5.5 V; if the design also powers the PSMC output stage from a higher rail, keep the digital and analog grounds tied at a single point near the MCU. Brown-out reset should be enabled in configuration bits to avoid code lockups during slow VDD rise times. The analog supply AVSS must be tied to the same ground as VSS, never left floating, or ADC accuracy will suffer.

The 28-SSOP has a 0.65 mm lead pitch and 5.30 mm body width, so use the standard SSOP land pattern with at least 0.20 mm solder mask sliver between pads to prevent bridging. Route analog signals (RA0-RA5, RC0-RC7 analog channels) away from PWM outputs and clock traces to minimize coupling. Place the ICSP header (PGC on RB6, PGD on RB7, MCLR on pin 1) on the board edge for production programming. For noisy SMPS designs, keep the MCU ground island separate from the power-stage ground return, joined at one star point.

Do not rely on the internal 32 MHz oscillator for UART timing at high baud rates without calibration; the factory HFINTOSC tolerance is approximately +/-2 percent and may exceed the +/-1.5 percent needed for reliable 115200 baud communication. Either enable the FPLL with a low-frequency crystal reference or use the internal oscillator tuning register OSCTUNE to compensate at production test. Also, when migrating from PIC16F877 code, verify the register map because the PIC16F1788 enhanced mid-range core has different peripheral addresses and LAT register semantics for some ports.

When using the on-chip op-amps in the feedback loop of an SMPS, keep the op-amp input traces short and route them over a continuous analog ground pour. The op-amp output can drive the ADC input directly, but add a small RC filter (100 ohm, 100 pF) at the ADC pin to limit broadband noise. The 10-bit ADC requires the acquisition time TAQ specified in the datasheet - shortening it below the datasheet value causes non-linear conversion results. Use the ADC2 computation mode rather than CPU averaging to free the core for the control loop.
