PIC16F684T-I/ML Descripción general

The Microchip Technology PIC16F684T-I/ML is a 14-pin flash-based 8-bit CMOS microcontroller from the PIC® 16F family, delivering 20MHz operation, 3.5KB (2K x 14 words) of Flash program memory, 128 bytes of RAM, and 256 bytes of EEPROM data memory in a 16-pin QFN (4x4) package with exposed thermal pad. The "T" suffix indicates Tape & Reel packaging, while "I" designates the -40C to +85C industrial temperature range, and "/ML" denotes the QFN package option.

What is a PIC16 microcontroller? The PIC16F mid-range family is an 8-bit Harvard-architecture RISC microcontroller line from Microchip, sitting between the baseline PIC10/12/16 and the high-performance PIC18/PIC24 families. PIC16F MCUs offer 14-bit instruction words, 35 single-word instructions, 200ns instruction execution, on-chip EEPROM, nanoWatt power management, and a standardized peripheral set including ADC, comparators, PWM, and timers. They are widely used in cost-sensitive embedded designs where deterministic real-time response, low power, and small footprint matter more than raw computational throughput.

Key features of the PIC16F684T-I/ML include 12 I/O pins, 11-channel 10-bit ADC, two analog comparators, enhanced PWM/capture/compare modules, an internal 8MHz oscillator, and wide 2.0V to 5.5V operating voltage. The device incorporates nanoWatt power-saving modes that drop standby current into the microamp range, making it suitable for battery-powered applications. On-chip In-Circuit Serial Programming (ICSP) and In-Circuit Debug (ICD) enable field-upgradeable firmware.

Typical applications include battery chargers, LED drivers, small motor control, sensor signal conditioning, remote controls, appliance controllers, and low-cost industrial sensing nodes. The wide voltage range and analog-rich peripheral set let a single chip replace discrete op-amp + comparator circuitry.

When designing with this part, place the exposed thermal pad (EP) on a continuous ground copper pour to meet QFN thermal and electrical performance. Decouple VDD with 100nF and bulk 1uF capacitors placed within 5mm of the supply pin. The internal 8MHz oscillator is factory calibrated to within +/-1%, but for timing-critical applications use an external crystal or resonator on OSC1/OSC2 pins.

Aplicaciones típicas

PIC16F684T-I/ML es adecuado para 7 aplicacións: Battery Charger Controller, LED Lighting Driver, Small Motor Control (Brushed DC), Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning, Remote Control / IR Transmitter, Appliance Controller (White Goods), Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node.

⚡

Battery Charger Controller

The PIC16F684T-I/ML fits battery charger controllers thanks to its 2.0V-5.5V operating voltage, 11-channel 10-bit ADC for voltage and current sensing, and two analog comparators that detect charge termination without CPU intervention. The Enhanced CCP (ECCP) PWM module drives a switching MOSFET at fixed frequency, while the 3.5KB Flash holds CC/CV algorithm state machines. nanoWatt sleep mode drops quiescent current to microamp range, allowing the MCU to monitor battery presence while drawing negligible standby power. The wide voltage range supports Li-Ion, NiMH, and lead-acid chemistries on the same hardware platform.

💡

LED Lighting Driver

The PIC16F684T-I/ML is well matched to LED driver designs because its 12 I/O pins can each sink 25mA, enough to drive indicator or low-current signal LEDs directly. The ECCP and CCP PWM channels provide hardware-based dimming with 10-bit resolution, eliminating CPU overhead for brightness control loops. The internal 8MHz calibrated oscillator delivers timing accuracy adequate for high-frequency PWM dimming without an external crystal. Designers can leverage the 11-channel ADC for ambient-light sensor feedback, color-temperature mixing, and constant-current regulation across multiple LED strings. The QFN exposed pad provides thermal relief for moderate-power LED arrays.

🏭

Small Motor Control (Brushed DC)

For brushed DC motor speed and direction control, the PIC16F684T-I/ML provides the ECCP module for hardware PWM generation, two analog comparators for back-EMF sensing or current-limit detection, and 3.5KB Flash for PI control-loop firmware. The 200ns instruction execution lets the control loop run at 50kHz update rates from a single timer interrupt. The wide 2.0V-5.5V supply enables direct battery operation down to depleted NiMH cells. H-bridge direction control uses two GPIO pairs driven with hardware dead-band generation, reducing shoot-through risk.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning

Industrial sensor nodes benefit from the PIC16F684T-I/ML's industrial -40C to +85C temperature range, 11-channel 10-bit ADC for multi-sensor scanning, and 256 bytes of EEPROM for in-field calibration constants. Two analog comparators allow window-detect alarms that wake the CPU from sleep only on threshold crossings, reducing average power in remote installations. The 12 I/O pins multiplex sensor power switching, digital I/O links (I2C/SPI/UART), and status LEDs from a single MCU. On-chip ICSP/ICD permits firmware updates without removing the sensor from service.

📱

Remote Control / IR Transmitter

The PIC16F684T-I/ML is a strong fit for consumer remote controls because its 3.5KB Flash stores complex IR protocol libraries (RC5, NEC, SIRC), the internal 8MHz oscillator avoids crystal cost, and nanoWatt sleep mode extends battery life into multi-year territory. The ECCP module generates accurate 38kHz/40kHz/56kHz carrier frequencies for IR modulation directly, with the duty cycle controlled by firmware. The wide 2.0V-5.5V supply works with CR2032 coin cells, two AA cells in series, or single Li-Ion cells without level shifting.

🏭

Appliance Controller (White Goods)

White-goods appliance controllers use the PIC16F684T-I/ML for its industrial temperature rating, on-chip EEPROM for storing user-set cycles, and analog comparator-based zero-cross detection for triac/SCR phase-angle control. The 11-channel ADC scans multiple temperature, pressure, and water-level sensors at high speed, while PWM channels drive buzzer alarms, indicator LEDs, and motor valves. ICSP lets manufacturers apply firmware patches in service without opening the appliance housing, and the QFN package withstands vibration in washing-machine and dishwasher environments.

🧩

Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node

The PIC16F684T-I/ML suits low-duty-cycle IoT sensor nodes that wake periodically, sample, and transmit, then return to deep sleep. nanoWatt sleep currents in the microamp range, an internal 8MHz oscillator that powers up in microseconds, and 256-byte EEPROM for storing sensor calibration enable multi-year coin-cell operation. The 11-channel ADC scans multiple analog sensors (temperature, humidity, light, battery voltage), and a single UART or I2C interface drives an external radio module. The QFN package and wide voltage range fit the small-form-factor, low-cost requirements of disposable or near-disposable IoT tags.

Notas de diseño

QFN exposed-pad thermal/ground connection is mandatory. Solder the EP (pin 17 underside pad) to a continuous ground copper pour with at least 16 thermal vias to the inner ground plane. Skipping the EP solder connection causes poor thermal performance and ground-bounce issues at 20MHz. Place 100nF + 1uF decoupling capacitors within 5mm of VDD pin 14, with the smaller cap closest to the pin. Keep traces short and direct, and avoid routing high-speed signals across the EP region.

Do not confuse PIC16F684T-I/ML with PIC16F684-I/P (DIP-14 package) or PIC16F684-I/SL (SOIC-14). The 16-QFN footprint is unique to the /ML suffix; the /P and /SL variants use different PCB land patterns and cannot be substituted without layout rework. When ordering, double-check that both the temperature grade (I = industrial, E = extended) and the package code (/ML = QFN) match your design before releasing a purchase order. Cross-reference the marking on the device to the order code to prevent mix-ups.

For 20MHz operation at 3.3V or 5V, route the ICSP/ICD signals (ICSPCLK = pin 16, ICSPDAT = pin 15) to a 6-pin header with no series resistors and a 100k ohm pull-down on ICSPCLK to prevent spurious programming entry. Place the ICSP header at the board edge for production-line probe access. The oscillator pins (OSC1/RA7, OSC2/RA6) must be left floating when using the internal 8MHz oscillator, or grounded through 10pF capacitors when using an external crystal.

Estimated: At 20MHz, 5V, with all peripherals active, the PIC16F684 draws approximately 8-10 mA. At 3.3V, 4MHz (INTOSC), current drops to ~1 mA. In sleep mode with WDT disabled, current is typically 1-100 nA depending on temperature and process variation. Decoupling VDD with both bulk (1-10uF) and high-frequency (100nF) capacitors is essential because digital I/O switching creates sub-microsecond current spikes. Add a ferrite bead in series with VDD in noisy industrial environments to suppress conducted EMI from inductive loads.
