PIC16F747-E/PT Descripción general

The Microchip PIC16F747-E/PT is an 8-bit CMOS Flash-based microcontroller (MCU) running at 20MHz with 7KB (4K x 14) of program Flash memory, packaged in a 44-pin TQFP (10x10mm). It delivers 200ns instruction execution with only 35 single-word instructions, making it easy to program while packing Microchip's PIC16 architecture into 40- or 44-pin packages, upwards compatible with PIC16C5X, PIC12CXXX and PIC16C7X devices.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, memory (Flash/RAM/EEPROM), and peripherals on one die. It belongs to the microcontroller family, which sits within embedded computing and is widely used where deterministic low-power control outweighs raw computational throughput. The PIC16F747 specifically targets cost-sensitive embedded designs that need rich analog and serial connectivity.

The PIC16F747 integrates 14 channels of 10-bit Analog-to-Digital conversion (A/D), 3 timers, 3 Capture/Compare/PWM (CCP) modules, an MSSP configurable as either 3-wire SPI or 2-wire I2C, a USART, and nanoWatt Technology power management. Its 36 I/O pins are arranged for direct connection to mixed-signal peripherals, while the 368-byte RAM and integrated EEPROM make it suitable for applications requiring parameter retention.

Architecture-wise, the PIC16F747 uses a RISC Harvard bus architecture with separate program and data paths, enabling single-cycle instruction fetch except for branch instructions. NanoWatt Technology provides dynamic power management through idle/sleep modes, supporting battery-backed applications. The 14-channel 10-bit ADC and 3 CCP modules enable simultaneous analog monitoring and PWM control, useful for motor control loops.

Typical applications include industrial automation, consumer electronics, medical devices, motor control, and white-goods control panels. Its wide -40C to +125C operating range and 36 I/O count suit mixed-signal front-ends in industrial environments.

Design consideration: when migrating from a 40-pin DIP PIC16F737 to the 44-TQFP PIC16F747, verify that the additional 4 pins are configured correctly (RB5-RB7 and RC0-RC3 mapping differ). Brown-out reset and watchdog timer configuration must be set in CONFIG words at programming time and are not field-upgradable.

Notas de diseño

Estimated: at VDD=5V, MCU running at 20 MHz, I/O unloaded, core current is approximately 11-13 mA per Microchip PIC16F74x typical curves. Add 5-10 mA per I/O pin sinking 20 mA. Use decoupling caps: 100 nF ceramic as close as possible to pins 11 (VDD) and 12 (VSS), plus a bulk 10 uF tantalum at the board input. For battery-powered designs, enable nanoWatt sleep mode to drop quiescent current below 1 uA, waking via INT0 or WDT.

The 44-TQFP package has 0.8 mm pitch pads requiring a 4-layer PCB with 0.4 mm via-in-pad or dog-bone fan-out. Place the decoupling capacitors within 3 mm of the VDD/VSS pins to minimize power-rail inductance. Route the oscillator traces (OSC1/OSC2) symmetrically with a guard ground to prevent crosstalk, and keep them short (<10 mm). For EMI compliance, place the ICSP pins (RB6/RB7) on test pads or a 0.1-inch header accessible without disassembly.

Configuration bits (CONFIG) must be set correctly during programming. Brown-out reset (BOR) voltage must be selected to match VDD (typically 4.0V for 5V systems, 2.5V for 3.3V systems). Failing to enable the watchdog timer (WDT) can cause field-locked systems if firmware has any runaway paths. Also, pins RA6/RA7 default to oscillator functions - they cannot be used as GPIO without reconfiguration in CONFIG. The MCLR pin (pin 1) requires a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD if not driven by an external reset supervisor.

The MSSP SPI bus can operate up to 10 MHz, but signal integrity degrades above 5 MHz on long PCB traces. Use series resistors (22-33 ohm) at SPI outputs (RC3 SCK, RC4 SDO) to damp reflections. For I2C bus, use 4.7 kohm pull-ups at 5V VDD and 2.2 kohm at 3.3V VDD; the PIC16F747 cannot drive I2C lines below 100 kHz with internal weak pull-ups. The USART supports up to 2.5 Mbps but in noisy environments, prefer 115200 baud or lower for robust RS-485 communication.
