PIC16F818-I/SS Descripción general

The Microchip Technology PIC16F818-I/SS is an 8-bit RISC Flash microcontroller based on the PIC16 architecture, offering up to 20 MHz operation, 1.75 KB (1K x 14 words) of program Flash memory, 128 bytes of SRAM, and 128 bytes of EEPROM data memory, all integrated in a 20-pin SSOP package. The device executes instructions in a 200 ns instruction cycle and features a 13-bit program counter with an 8K x 14 addressable program-memory space, of which 1K x 14 is physically implemented for PIC16F818.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates an 8-bit CPU, program memory (ROM/Flash), data memory (RAM), I/O peripherals and a clock source on one silicon die. Within the embedded hierarchy, the PIC16F818 belongs to the PIC16F family of microcontrollers, which sits within Microchip's 8-bit PIC product line, which is itself a category of microcontrollers (MCU), which is a category of embedded processors, which is a category of semiconductors. The PIC16F818 is pin-compatible with the PIC16F819, and is software- and peripheral-compatible with the larger PIC16C7x, PIC16C62xA, PIC16C5X and PIC12CXXX families, giving designers an easy migration path from older OTP or ROM-based parts to Flash-based silicon.

Key features include an internal 8 MHz oscillator (no external crystal required for many designs), 16 I/O pins with individually programmable direction, a 10-bit ADC with up to 5 channels, an enhanced Capture/Compare/PWM (ECCP) module, an MSSP port supporting SPI and I2C (master/slave), an asynchronous USART for RS-232/RS-485, two 8-bit timers plus one 16-bit timer, and a watchdog timer with its own on-chip low-power RC oscillator. The Flash program memory supports in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) via two pins, allowing firmware updates after PCB assembly.

The PIC16F818 operates from 2.0 V to 5.5 V across the industrial -40C to +85C range, suiting it for 3.3 V and 5 V designs. With a typical active current of <2 mA at 4 MHz and 5 V, plus sub-microamp sleep currents with brown-out reset (BOR) enabled, the part targets low-power embedded nodes. The 20-pin SSOP (5.30 mm body) provides a compact 0.65 mm pitch footprint, balancing IO count with board-area efficiency.

Typical applications include consumer appliance control panels, sensor interface nodes, simple LED lighting controllers, low-cost motor control loops, and battery-powered instrument peripherals. For designs needing more memory or a second comparator, designers can drop in the PIC16F819 (2K Flash) without changing the PCB.

When designing with this MCU, reserve the ICSPDAT/ICSPCLK pins (typically RB7/RB6) so that in-circuit programming remains possible in production. Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of VDD, and a bulk 10 uF if the application drives heavy loads from the same rail. Verify MCLR behaviour - the device ships with MCLR disabled; an external pull-up or dedicated reset circuit may be required.

Aplicaciones típicas

PIC16F818-I/SS es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: Consumer Appliance Control Panels, Battery-Powered Sensor Nodes, LED Lighting Controllers, Low-Cost Motor Control Loops, Instrument and Metering Peripherals, In-Circuit Programmable IoT Bridges.

🏭

Consumer Appliance Control Panels

The PIC16F818-I/SS is well suited for consumer appliance control panels such as washing-machine interfaces, microwave keypads, and HVAC thermostat units. Its 1.75 KB of Flash is enough for keypad scanning, debounce logic, and LCD/segmented display drivers, while 128 bytes of EEPROM stores user preferences and last-state memory. The 10-bit ADC handles temperature or humidity sensor inputs in HVAC applications, and the USART links the control board to a main inverter board. Power is typically 5 V from the appliance rail, fully inside the PIC16F818's 2.0-5.5 V operating range. SSOP-20 fits inside tight user-interface bezels where every mm of board area matters.

🧩

Battery-Powered Sensor Nodes

Battery-powered sensor nodes benefit from the PIC16F818-I/SS nanoWatt technology features including sub-microamp sleep current, BOR, and a low-power watchdog on its own RC oscillator. A 4 MHz INTOSC plus sleep current under 1 uA lets the part run for years on a single CR2032 in intermittent duty. The MSSP peripheral handles I2C or SPI sensor readouts (temperature, pressure, accelerometers), and the internal 10-bit ADC samples additional analog channels without an external ADC chip. The part wakes on watchdog timeout, captures a sensor reading, decides if a radio wake-up is needed, and returns to sleep. Industrial -40C to +85C temperature range covers most outdoor and metering scenarios.

💡

LED Lighting Controllers

Small-form-factor LED lighting controllers for under-cabinet fixtures, decorative strips, or aquarium lighting exploit the PIC16F818-I/SS's Enhanced CCP (ECCP) PWM module to drive one or more LED channels with hardware-based dead-band control. A 10-bit ADC reads ambient light sensors for daylight harvesting, and an internal 8 MHz oscillator removes the need for an external timing component. The MSSP accepts digital addressable LED protocols (WS2812-style) or analog current-sense feedback. With 16 I/O pins, the same SSOP-20 part handles several low-side LED drivers plus a DMX/RDM-style UART input. At 2.0 V minimum, the part runs from LED driver rails as low as two NiMH cells.

🏭

Low-Cost Motor Control Loops

Small DC motor and unipolar stepper control loops in toys, small appliances, and pumps can be built around the PIC16F818-I/SS with its ECCP PWM output, two 8-bit and one 16-bit timer. Closed-loop speed control via the 10-bit ADC reading back-EMF or current sense is straightforward in 1.75 KB of Flash. The USART communicates with a host controller or accepts sensorless position feedback. Industrial temperature rating lets the same firmware run in automotive accessories and white-goods motor boards. For more memory or higher PWM resolution, the pin-compatible PIC16F819-I/SS is the documented upgrade path without changing the PCB.

🔧

Instrument and Metering Peripherals

Peripherals for bench instruments, weighing scales, and metering devices use the PIC16F818-I/SS to read sensors, manage a small character LCD, and exchange data with a host through SPI or I2C. The 128-byte EEPROM saves calibration constants or user-defined ranges, eliminating the need for an external serial EEPROM. A 10-bit ADC with selectable VREF accommodates load-cell and shunt-resistor current measurements down to mV levels. The part operates over 2.0-5.5 V, fitting both battery-powered and line-powered instrument tops. The internal 8 MHz oscillator provides timing accuracy sufficient for most sensor-sampling work.

🌐

In-Circuit Programmable IoT Bridges

The PIC16F818-I/SS acts as a low-cost bridge between legacy industrial equipment and modern IoT gateways by serving as a serial protocol converter (RS-232/RS-485 USART to SPI or I2C to an attached radio module). Its Flash memory is in-circuit programmable via ICSP, allowing field firmware updates over a programming header without removing the device. Industrial -40C to +85C operation covers factory floors and outdoor cabinets. The watchdog timer on its own internal RC oscillator offers fail-safe operation independent of the main clock. Combined with the 128-byte EEPROM for bridge configuration storage, it is a cost-effective way to retrofit old equipment.

Guía de selección

Choose PIC16F818-I/SS for cost-sensitive SSOP-20 designs that need 1.75 KB of Flash, a 10-bit ADC, on-chip EEPROM, and an internal oscillator without external crystal. The PIC16F819-I/SS is the documented pin-compatible upgrade path, doubling Flash to 2K x 14 and adding a second comparator for the same board layout - recommended if firmware growth is likely. PIC16F88-I/SS in the same SSOP-20 package offers more memory (7 KB Flash, 256 B RAM) for slightly higher cost, suitable for richer feature sets. PIC16F818T-I/SS is the same die in tape-and-reel packaging, used when reel-mount production is preferred. Avoid the PIC16F84A-I/P unless EEPROM/ADC/PWM are genuinely unused, since adding those peripherals externally negates the cost saving. For new designs, PIC18F-family parts are recommended for headroom and Core Independent Peripherals, but the PIC16F818-I/SS remains the optimal choice when minimal pin-count and lowest BOM cost are the design drivers.

Notas de diseño

ICSP pins RB7 (PGD) and RB6 (PGC) must remain accessible to the in-circuit programmer. Per the PIC16F818 datasheet (39598E), tying these pins hard to GND or VDD, or using them as heavy-current outputs without isolation resistors, can block production programming and field firmware updates. Keep the traces short and avoid large fanouts; if the pins must drive external circuitry, buffer them through a resistor network that does not exceed the programming port's drive.

Place a 100 nF (0.1 uF) decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of the VDD pin to filter high-frequency switching noise from the internal core, and add a bulk 10 uF on the board if multiple loads share the same 3.3 V or 5 V rail. Brown-out reset (BOR) is enabled by configuration word and holds the part in reset until VDD rises above the BOR threshold, which protects Flash during unstable power-up. Verify that the chosen BOR level matches the regulator's startup ramp time for the application.

When the internal 8 MHz oscillator is used, do NOT leave the OSC1/OSC2 (RA6/RA7) traces dangling. Per the datasheet (39598E), unconfigured oscillator pins must be left as standard digital I/O, but if crystal mode is selected in the configuration word, leave the traces symmetric and short to avoid stray capacitance mis-tuning the oscillator. Estimated: with a 20 MHz crystal and 15 pF loading caps, traces longer than 5 mm should be guarded with a grounded shield.

The 10-bit ADC reference (VREF+/VREF-) can be tied to VDD/VSS for cost-sensitive designs, but for accurate readings below 50 mV (current-sense, thermocouple junctions, weigh scales), use an external low-noise reference voltage tied to RA3/RA2. Estimated: with VDD=5 V and VREF+=4.096 V, each LSB of the 10-bit ADC measures 4 mV, which is adequate for most sensor bridge signals; an internal reference or external rail-to-rail buffer improves linearity at low ADC counts.
