PIC16LF15356T-I/MV Descripción general

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF15356T-I/MV is an 8-bit PIC microcontroller from the PIC® XLP™ 16F family, featuring 28KB (16K x 14) of Flash program memory, 2KB of RAM, and a maximum CPU clock of 32 MHz, housed in a 28-pin UQFN (4x4) package. It is designed for ultra-low-power (XLP) applications and integrates Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) including a 10-bit ADC with up to 25 I/O channels, a 5-bit DAC, two comparators, four 16-bit PWMs, four Configurable Logic Cells (CLC), a Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG), and two EUSART/SPI/I2C interfaces.

An 8-bit PIC microcontroller is a RISC-based (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) embedded controller that executes one instruction per clock cycle (except branches), enabling deterministic real-time performance at low power. PIC MCUs sit within the broader hierarchy: 8-bit microcontroller -> microcontroller -> embedded controller -> semiconductor IC. The PIC16F153xx family specifically targets battery-powered and energy-harvesting designs where nanoWatt XLP sleep currents, peripheral activity monitoring, and flexible oscillator selection are essential. The 'LF' prefix denotes the wide 1.8V-3.6V VDD range optimized for single-cell Li-coin or 2xAA alkaline battery chemistries, while the 'T' suffix indicates tape-and-reel packaging for high-volume SMT assembly.

Key differentiating features of the PIC16LF15356 include its 28KB Flash (double the 14KB of the lower-end PIC16LF15325/15344 siblings), 256 bytes of data EEPROM for non-volatile user parameter storage, four independent 16-bit PWM channels with complementary outputs, and the CWG peripheral which simplifies Class-D audio, motor drive, and switched-mode power topologies. The four CLC blocks allow logic function synthesis in hardware, offloading the CPU and reducing firmware complexity.

Typical applications include IoT sensor nodes, low-power wireless modules, battery-powered home automation devices, white-goods and small appliance controllers, LED lighting controllers, and portable medical/wellness devices. The combination of 25 I/O, 12-bit ADC, and rich communication peripherals also makes it well suited for human-machine interface (HMI) controllers and motor-control daughter cards. Industrial 4-20mA sensor transmitters benefit from the wide operating voltage and integrated 5-bit DAC.

When designing with this part, ensure the VDD rail is decoupled with a 100 nF X7R ceramic capacitor within 5 mm of the VDD pin and a bulk 1 µF-10 µF capacitor on the same net. The 32 MHz internal oscillator eliminates the need for an external crystal in most applications; if crystal accuracy is required, route the crystal traces with short, symmetric lengths and a guard ring tied to ground.

Notas de diseño

Place a 100 nF X7R ceramic decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of each VDD pin and a bulk 1 µF-10 µF capacitor on the same VDD net. For battery applications drawing <2 mA peak, an MCP1700 3.3V LDO provides a clean rail with only 1.6 µA quiescent current. If the design uses Sleep currents below 1 µA, choose a low-Iq buck regulator such as the MCP16411 to maximize runtime. The PIC16LF15356 VDD ramp must be monotonic for proper brown-out reset; avoid RC time constants above 100 ms on VDD.

The 28-pin UQFN (4x4 mm) package has a center thermal/exposed pad that must be soldered to a 2.5x2.5 mm copper pour on the top layer. The center pad improves thermal dissipation; it is NOT internally connected to VSS or VDD. Connect the center pad to the ground plane through 4-9 thermal vias (0.3 mm drill, 0.6 mm pitch) to reduce ground impedance. Keep traces under the UQFN package at least 0.2 mm clearance from the pad edge to prevent solder wicking defects.

Do not exceed 3.6V on any pin; the PIC16LF15356 is NOT 5V tolerant. The MCLR pin has an internal pull-up but adding a 10 kΩ external pull-up and a 100 nF decoupling capacitor prevents spurious resets in noisy environments. The internal 32 MHz HFINTOSC has ±2% accuracy at 3.3V/25°C; if your design requires USB or accurate UART timing, use an external 16MHz crystal on OSC1/OSC2 with 15-33 pF load capacitors placed within 5 mm of the pins.

Route the ICSPDAT and ICSPCLK traces (RB6/RB7) close together with ground guard traces to maintain signal integrity during programming. Analog inputs (RA0-RA3, RB1-RB5) should be routed away from digital switching traces; place a ground ring around sensitive analog traces. The complementary PWM channels (PWM3/PWM4 with CWG) require symmetric trace lengths of <25 mm between MCU pins and the gate driver to minimize dead-band mismatch.
