PIC16LF1716-E/ML Descripción general

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF1716-E/ML is an 8-bit PIC microcontroller from the PIC16F/LF171X family, delivering 32 MHz performance with 14 KB Flash (8K x 14 words) and 1 KB SRAM in a compact 28-pin QFN (6x6 mm) package. This device targets battery-friendly applications through Microchip's eXtreme Low Power (XLP) technology and combines intelligent analog peripherals with core-independent CIP modules to reduce BOM cost and software overhead.

A microcontroller (MCU) is an integrated circuit that combines a CPU core, non-volatile program memory (Flash), working RAM, and a range of peripherals (ADC, timers, communication ports, PWMs) on a single silicon die. Within the broader taxonomy, the PIC16LF1716 sits in the PIC16 8-bit family -> 8-bit microcontroller -> microcontroller IC -> embedded processor -> semiconductor. Mid-range PIC16 parts are widely used in cost-sensitive, low-power embedded designs where 32-bit MCUs would be over-specified.

Key differentiating features include on-chip operational amplifiers, a 10-bit ADC, two independent Capture/Compare/PWM modules, enhanced Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter (EUSART), I2C and SPI interfaces, Numerically Controlled Oscillator (NCO), Configurable Logic Cell (CLC), Complementary Output Generator (COG), and Zero-Cross Detect. The 'LF' suffix indicates the wide 1.8V to 3.6V supply range (versus the 'F' 1.8V-5.5V variant), optimized for Li-ion or 2xAA battery rails. The 28-QFN (6x6) footprint removes through-hole soldering requirements and supports aggressive PCB miniaturization.

Architecturally, the PIC16LF1716 leverages a RISC-like Harvard core with 49 instructions, a hardware stack, and deterministic interrupt response. The integrated op-amps can condition sensor signals before the ADC, eliminating external amplification stages. Core-independent peripherals (CLC, NCO, COG) perform logic, frequency synthesis, and dead-band control without CPU intervention, freeing the 8-bit core to stay in low-power sleep modes between events.

Typical applications include wearable health and fitness devices, IoT sensor nodes, low-power wireless transmitters, battery chargers, sensor signal conditioning, motor control with closed-loop feedback, LED drivers, and consumer remote controls. The combination of analog integration, low voltage operation, and small footprint also makes it suitable for industrial sensor transmitters and portable instrumentation.

When designing with this device, prioritize sleep-mode utilization to maximize battery life - the XLP sleep current is specified at sub-uA levels. Place decoupling capacitors adjacent to VDD and use the Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) feature to remap digital functions to alternate physical pins, simplifying PCB layout. This page synthesizes distributor pricing, verified drop-in alternatives, and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet alone.

Aplicaciones típicas

PIC16LF1716-E/ML es adecuado para 7 aplicacións: Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node, Wearable Health Monitor, Closed-Loop DC Motor Control, Industrial Sensor Transmitter (4-20 mA / 0-10 V), LCD-Segment / LED Lighting Controller, Consumer Remote Control (BLE-Ready / IR), Smart Agriculture Sensor.

🧩

Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node

The PIC16LF1716-E/ML fits battery-powered IoT sensor nodes because its LF supply range (1.8V-3.6V) directly maps to 2xAA or Li-ion discharge curves, and XLP technology drops sleep current below 1 uA. The 32 MHz core handles sensor sampling, ADC conversion (10-bit), and AES/MAC pre-processing before the radio wakes up, while on-chip op-amps condition bridge or thermistor signals without external components. Compared to a 32-bit MCU, this part costs roughly one-third as much while still offering UART/SPI for radio modules like LoRa or BLE.

📱

Wearable Health Monitor

For wearable health monitors, the PIC16LF1716's 14 KB Flash and 1 KB SRAM are sufficient for heart-rate / SpO2 / step-count algorithms on small OLED displays. The on-chip op-amps condition photodiode signals from a pulse oximeter, while the CLC and NCO generate timing signals without waking the CPU. Operating from 3 V coin-cell rails at sub-uA sleep duty cycles delivers multi-week battery life per the datasheet power-budget spreadsheets. The 28-QFN (6x6 mm) package allows placement within wristband housings.

🏭

Closed-Loop DC Motor Control

In closed-loop DC motor control (brushed DC or low-power BLDC), the PIC16LF1716-E/ML uses its Complementary Output Generator (COG) to produce complementary PWM pairs with dead-band control directly in hardware, eliminating software timing jitter and CPU overhead. Combined with on-chip op-amps for current sensing and the 10-bit ADC, the device can run a complete 1-A continuous brushed-motor controller from a 2S Li-ion pack. The 14 KB Flash fits state-space or PI-loop firmware with command parsing over UART.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Transmitter (4-20 mA / 0-10 V)

The PIC16LF1716 acts as the core of a 4-20 mA / 0-10 V industrial sensor transmitter, where its LF supply range accepts loop power (after the LDO) and its 10-bit ADC plus op-amps handle RTD, thermocouple, or pressure-bridge conditioning with cold-junction compensation. Galvanic isolation from the loop is achieved with a digital isolator that communicates via SPI. EUSART interfaces to HART modems or RS-485 transceivers, and the -40C to +125C 'E' temperature grade handles harsh factory floors.

💡

LCD-Segment / LED Lighting Controller

For segment-LCD metering or smart LED driver boards, the PIC16LF1716 drives LCD charge pumps via PWM and CLC logic while the NCO synthesizes precise frequencies for indicator blinking or DMX-style protocols. With Peripheral Pin Select, the same QFN layout can be re-used across product variants by reassigning peripheral outputs in firmware - cutting PCB revision cycles. Operating at 1.8V to 3.6V from alkaline or step-down supplies, it offers a robust and affordable MCU core.

🎥

Consumer Remote Control (BLE-Ready / IR)

The PIC16LF1716 is widely used in consumer remote controls where IR command encoding, button scanning, and low-power shutdown are baseline requirements. The eXtreme Low Power sleep plus interrupt-on-change wake-up makes it ideal for coin-cell-powered clickers lasting 5+ years. With PWM, the device can drive RGB LED back-haptic mirrors; with EUSART, it pairs with a BLE chip like the RN4871 to make a hybrid IR/BLE universal remote. The 28-QFN package hides easily behind the PCB.

🌐

Smart Agriculture Sensor

Smart agriculture deployments need an MCU that can be soldered to a 28-QFN pad, run on 3.3V batteries for years, and condition multiple analog sensors - exactly the PIC16LF1716's specialty. Soil-moisture capacitance sensors and NTC thermistors interface directly to the on-chip op-amps and 10-bit ADC, while UART/SPI connect to LoRa or NB-IoT modems. Sleep currents below 1 uA, combined with the LF voltage range, mean a single 18650 cell can power a periodic-transmit soil node for multiple growing seasons.

Notas de diseño

Always solder the 28-QFN exposed thermal pad (pin 28, labeled EP) to a continuous ground plane stitched with at least nine thermal vias to inner copper layers; omitting this pad connection can cause the device to overheat and trigger thermal reset under moderate load. The exposed pad is also the primary analog ground reference for the ADC and op-amps, so a high-impedance connection here directly degrades ADC accuracy by several LSBs.

Estimated: with VDD = 3.0V and a 32 MHz HFINTOSC active configuration, the core consumes approximately 1.6 mA typical. To stay within the LF supply range, never apply more than 3.6V across VDD/VSS - the LF silicon breaks down above this threshold. For brown-out protection, configure the BOR module to 1.85V via the configuration word so that the device properly resets during deep-battery discharge rather than running glitched code at low VDD.

Use Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) to remap peripherals to keep high-speed signals adjacent to ICSP/programming pins instead of crossing the board. Place the 100 nF VDD decoupling capacitor within 3 mm of pin 7, with a second bulk 10 uF tantalum or ceramic cap on the analog VDD rail. Keep the AGND/AVDD pair routed together and isolated from digital switching return currents.

When routing the HFINTOSC-controlled clock or any high-frequency PWM output (including COG complementary outputs), maintain a continuous reference plane underneath each trace; avoid routing PWM over a gap. For CE/EMI compliance on switching applications, series-terminate signals exceeding 5 cm length with a 100 ohm resistor at the driver pin to dampen overshoot on COG edges measured at 2-3 ns rise times.

Never float unused digital I/O pins: configure them as outputs with a defined low level. Floating pins can disable unused op-amp channels via their interaction logic and cause unexpected leakage that confuses sleep-current measurements. Do not enable PPS remapping without first disabling the conflicting unlock sequence - Microchip re-locks the PPSLOCK register after a single write in newer silicon revisions.
