PIC16LF1716-E/SP Descripción general

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF1716-E/SP is an 8-bit PIC microcontroller from the PIC16F1713/16 family that combines Intelligent Analog integration with the eXtreme Low Power (XLP) feature set, housed in a 28-pin SPDIP (0.300 inch, 7.62 mm) through-hole package. It provides 14 KB (8K x 14 words) of Flash program memory, 1 KB of SRAM, and operates at up to 32 MHz across a 1.8 V to 3.6 V supply range, making it optimized for low-power and battery-friendly embedded designs. The integrated peripheral set includes operational amplifiers, a 10-bit ADC, 5-bit and 8-bit DACs, Capture/Compare/PWM (CCP) modules, Numerically Controlled Oscillator (NCO), Zero Cross Detect (ZCD), Complementary Output Generator (COG), Configurable Logic Cells (CLC), Peripheral Pin Select (PPS), and EUSART plus I2C/SPI interfaces.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, memory (Flash/RAM/EEPROM), and programmable peripherals into one package. The PIC16LF1716 belongs to the Microchip PIC16F product family, sitting within the 8-bit microcontroller category, which itself falls under the broader class of microcontrollers and embedded processors. Its 8-bit RISC architecture executes instructions in a single cycle (up to 32 MHz / 125 ns instruction time), offering deterministic performance for control loops.

Key features include the XLP sleep current draw supporting battery lifetimes measured in years, an integrated Core Independent Peripherals (CIP) subsystem (CLC, COG, NCO, ZCD) that operates without CPU intervention to lower power and reduce code complexity, and the Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) that allows flexible routing of digital peripherals to available I/O pins. The high-resolution 10-bit ADC and on-chip op-amps enable sensor signal conditioning directly on the MCU.

The PIC16LF1716 fuses a Harvard RISC core with rich analog peripherals in one die, supporting extreme low power (XLP) modes well below 1 uA in sleep. The PPS subsystem and CLC-based state machines let designers implement complex timing and logic tasks in hardware, freeing the core for application code.

Typical applications include low-power sensor nodes and IoT end devices, consumer white goods and appliance control panels, battery-powered handheld instrumentation, LED lighting controllers with analog dimming, automotive interior accessories (where the -E temperature grade supports -40 C to +125 C), and industrial control boards requiring on-chip op-amps and DACs. The -E/SP variant is the extended-temperature, SPDIP-28 plastic DIP package version.

When designing with this MCU, note that the SPDIP package is intended for prototyping and through-hole assembly; for high-volume surface-mount production, the -I/ML, -I/SO, or -I/MV QFN/SOIC variants of the same die are recommended. Always provide adequate decoupling (100 nF + bulk) close to VDD/VDDIO pins and follow Microchip's in-circuit serialization guidance for secure firmware deployment.

🧩

Low-Power IoT Sensor Nodes

The PIC16LF1716-E/SP is an ideal MCU for battery-powered IoT sensor nodes that combine periodic sensing with years-long battery lifetime. Its XLP sleep current in the sub-microampere range lets the device idle for hours between wakes, while the integrated 10-bit ADC and on-chip op-amps condition analog sensor outputs (temperature, pressure, gas) directly without external analog ICs, cutting BOM cost and quiescent drain. The 1.8 V-3.6 V supply supports direct connection to 3 V coin cells; the EUSART plus I2C/SPI peripherals transmit readings to radios or co-processors without a heavy RTOS. The same SPDIP-28 footprint across the LF/1716 and LF/1713 family simplifies variant swaps when field upgrades demand more Flash.

🏭

Consumer Appliance Control Panels

Within washing-machine, dishwasher, and HVAC control panels, the PIC16LF1716-E/SP provides 14 KB of Flash for state-machine control code plus 1 KB SRAM for menu and timing arrays, all in a robust SPDIP package suited to through-hole assembly for high-reliability appliance environments. The five- and eight-bit DACs plus on-chip op-amps drive triac-fired motor or heater analog loops without external analog components, while CCP PWM channels control variable-speed pumps and valve actuators. Extended temperature grade (-40 C to +125 C) tolerates oven-adjacent and garage-installation thermal stress, and Microchip's mature supply chain supports multi-year production runs expected of appliance designs.

📱

Battery-Powered Handheld Instrumentation

Handheld multimeters, insulation testers, and field service instruments benefit from the PIC16LF1716-E/SP's combination of 1.8 V-3.6 V supply with on-chip 10-bit ADC and two op-amps for direct signal-conditioning paths. The 14 KB Flash holds calibration lookup tables, setpoint menus, and serial-protocol stacks while the 1 KB SRAM serves as a measurement buffer. XLP modes extend battery life on two-AA cells across extended shift work, and the SPDIP-28 footprint makes hand-rework feasible during prototype calibration, a practical advantage over fine-pitch QFNs in low-volume instrumentation. EUSART and I2C/SPI enable Bluetooth or USB-UART bridging modules.

💡

LED Lighting Controllers with Analog Dimming

In LED drivers and architectural lighting controllers, the PIC16LF1716-E/SP combines Zero Cross Detect (ZCD), Complementary Output Generator (COG), and on-chip op-amps for closed-loop current regulation with leading-edge or trailing-edge TRIAC dimming. Its 32 MHz CPU bandwidth executes 10-bit ADC-sensed current loops while the CLC peripherals implement hardware-driven dimming curves without CPU wakeup. The Extended temp grade supports enclosed hot-fixture operation, while 14 KB Flash holds DALI-2 or 0-10 V protocol stacks and dim-curves. The on-chip 5/8-bit DACs allow direct analog reference generation for tunable-white control.

🏭

Industrial Control Boards with On-Chip Analog

Small-form-factor industrial control boards use the PIC16LF1716-E/SP to consolidate logic, sensing, and actuation in one chip. The integrated op-amps condition 4-20 mA or 0-10 V field-sensor inputs, while 8-bit DACs generate analog set-point outputs for valve drives, and PWM CCP channels drive optocoupled SSR outputs directly. The -40 C to +125 C temperature range suits cabinet-mounted industrial use, while PPS simplifies routing between digital communications and analog signal pins without external muxes. The 28 SPDIP pin count provides enough I/O for typical 8-16 channel mixed-signal industrial I/O boards.

🚗

Automotive Interior Accessories (Non-Safety)

For non-safety automotive interior accessories such as ambient lighting controllers, seat-position memories, mirror modules, and infotainment remote keypads, the PIC16LF1716-E/SP provides extended-temperature operation (-40 C to +125 C), 14 KB Flash for stacks like LIN or CAN-node firmware, and integrated op-amps for direct sensing of seat-position potentiometers. The -E/SP SPDIP variant is well suited to low-volume and prototype-tier automotive module production. Designers targeting AEC-Q100 should consult Microchip's automotive-part-number variants in the same die.

Notas de diseño

The PIC16LF1716-E/SP supports XLP modes (sleep current under 1 uA typical) that must be enabled with proper clock gating and unused peripheral shutdown in code. Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of each VDD pin and add a bulk capacitor (10 uF minimum) on the VDD rail. For battery applications using coin cells, account for the inrush current of internal ADC voltage references and gate them via firmware-controlled enable bits to extend shelf life.

When laying out for the 28-pin SPDIP footprint, route the ICSP clock and data pins (RB6/RB7) with short traces kept clear of switching power and PWM outputs to avoid programming and in-circuit-debug interference. Isolate sensitive analog inputs (AN0-AN13) from digital switching signals by a ground keep-out. The exposed leadframe of the SPDIP is connected to VSS through the lead frame, so a generous ground copper pour on the bottom side aids thermal dissipation under high CPU activity.

When migrating between PIC16LF1716 and PIC16F1716, mind the F variant's wider supply range (2.3 V-5.5 V) versus the LF variant's lower 1.8 V minimum; under-voltage operation can trigger unpredictable Flash-programming behavior. Also verify Clock Switching configuration bits before transitioning between HFINTOSC and external oscillators. The -E temp grade SPDIP package variants are not AEC-Q100 qualified; for automotive use, choose Microchip's designated automotive-grade part numbers within the same family.
