PIC18F25Q43T-I/STX Descripción general

The Microchip Technology PIC18F25Q43T-I/STX is an 8-bit PIC microcontroller running at 64 MHz, integrating 32 KB Flash, 2 KB SRAM, and 256 bytes of EEPROM in a 28-pin VQFN (4x4) surface-mount package with tape-and-reel packaging. It belongs to the PIC18-Q43 family of low-power, high-performance microcontrollers aimed at real-time control applications, and is rated for the industrial -40C to +85C temperature range.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, non-volatile program memory (Flash), volatile working memory (RAM), and a rich set of peripherals. The PIC18 family uses an enhanced 8-bit Harvard RISC architecture with a 16-bit instruction word, while the Q43 sub-family layers modern Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) on top of the classic PIC18 core. Within the broader taxonomy, the PIC18F25Q43 belongs to: microcontroller -> 8-bit MCU -> PIC18 -> PIC18F Q-series -> PIC18-Q43.

Key differentiating features include a 12-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter with Computation (ADCC) that automates Capacitive Voltage Divider (CVD) sensing, averaging, oversampling and threshold detection; three 16-bit Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) peripherals; six channels of DMA; a built-in 8-bit DAC; and high-performance comparators. The XLP (eXtreme Low Power) technology and multiple low-power sleep modes enable deep-current standby for battery-operated products.

Technically, the device pairs a hardware multiplier and C compiler-optimized architecture with deterministic interrupt response, hardware-acceleration blocks (CRC, zero-cross detection, signal measurement timer), and a peripheral pin select (PPS) engine that lets designers remap digital peripherals onto most I/O pins. The 28-VQFN 4x4 mm footprint exposes up to 25 GPIO and is well suited to dense analog-plus-digital mixed-signal boards.

Typical applications include capacitive touch user interfaces, sensor signal conditioning with on-chip ADCC, motor and lighting PWM control, low-power IoT sensor nodes, and compact industrial control boards. The combination of touch, ADC and PWM makes it a strong fit for human-machine interface front-ends.

A primary design consideration is firmware migration: the PIC18-Q43 introduces the new ADCC and revised interrupt controller, so legacy PIC18 K-series code should be re-validated against the Q43 silicon errata before reuse. Designers should also verify PPS remappings against the chosen I/O assignments in MPLAB X.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives, and application guidance not available in the manufacturer datasheet, including parametric comparison against the most common PIC18 Q/K drop-in parts in the same 28-VQFN footprint.

Aplicaciones típicas

PIC18F25Q43T-I/STX es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: Capacitive Touch User Interface, Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning, Low-Power IoT Sensor Node, BLDC Motor and Lighting PWM Control, Automotive Body and Interior Module, USB HID / CDC Consumer Peripheral.

🧩

Capacitive Touch User Interface

The PIC18F25Q43T-I/STX fits capacitive touch front-ends because its 12-bit ADCC automates Capacitive Voltage Divider (CVD) scanning, hardware oversampling and threshold-comparison interrupts, all without CPU intervention. With up to 25 GPIO and three 16-bit PWMs in the 4x4 mm VQFN footprint, it can directly drive LED backlights or haptic feedback from the same PCB. Versus older CTMU-based designs, the ADCC reduces scan time per channel and lets the firmware sleep longer, lowering average current. A typical 12-button touch panel runs at 30-50 ms full scan with the XLP deep-sleep current under 100 nA between scans.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning

The 12-bit ADCC with hardware averaging and oversampling makes the PIC18F25Q43T-I/STX well suited to bridge-sensor, thermistor and 4-20 mA loop signal conditioning. The on-chip 8-bit DAC can drive excitation sources, while three 16-bit PWMs can synthesize analog outputs for industrial control loops without extra DAC chips. Six DMA channels move ADC results into SRAM autonomously, leaving CPU time for MODBUS RTU comms. The industrial -40C to +85C temperature range and 1.8-5.5 V VDD tolerance cover 3.3 V and 5 V industrial backplanes directly.

🧩

Low-Power IoT Sensor Node

The PIC18F25Q43T-I/STX serves battery-powered IoT nodes because XLP technology with deep-sleep current under 50 nA combined with the autonomous ADCC lets the MCU spend most of its time asleep. The 32 KB Flash holds a LoRaWAN or Thread-capable stack plus application code, and the 2 KB SRAM is enough for an interrupt-driven sensor buffer. PPS pin mapping lets the UART, I2C and SPI peripherals be routed to any GPIO, simplifying PCB layout when adding radios like the SX1276 or NRF24L01. A typical coin-cell node measuring temperature every minute averages well under 5 uA.

💡

BLDC Motor and Lighting PWM Control

Three independent 16-bit PWM peripherals with hardware fault shutdown and dead-band control make the PIC18F25Q43T-I/STX a strong fit for small BLDC fans, pumps and LED lighting drivers. The 64 MHz / 16 MIPS core executes field-oriented control loops at 8-10 kHz PWM rates without saturating, while DMA keeps the PWM duty registers updated with minimal jitter. The 8-bit DAC provides adjustable reference, and on-chip comparators can implement hardware over-current protection. The VQFN-28 (4x4) fits onto compact driver boards next to the half-bridge MOSFETs.

🚗

Automotive Body and Interior Module

The PIC18F25Q43T-I/STX handles body-electronics modules such as HVAC controls, mirror adjustment, ambient lighting and small body controllers because of its 32 KB Flash, robust ESD ratings and PPS-driven GPIO flexibility. The Q43's ADCC handles rotary position feedback and capacitive switch inputs with no external touch IC. Multiple UART/SPI/I2C instances connect to LIN transceivers, LED matrix drivers and small OLED displays. Designers targeting AEC-Q100 should select an automotive-grade PIC18-Q43 variant separately; the I/STX is industrial grade only.

🖥️

USB HID / CDC Consumer Peripheral

The PIC18F25Q43T-I/STX can host a USB HID or CDC device using Microchip's MPLAB Harmony USB stack with full-speed USB on the dedicated USB-capable pins, eliminating external USB-to-UART bridges. The 64 MHz CPU, 2 KB SRAM and DMA support 8-16 kHz USB HID report rates, useful for custom keyboards, mice, audio control surfaces and tuning peripherals. PPS routing keeps D+/D- on the right pads, and the 28-VQFN footprint leaves board space for a USB-C connector and ESD diodes. Internal EEPROM stores user profiles without external memory.

Datos de referencia de ingeniería para PIC18F25Q43T-I/STX — comparación, orientación de diseño e información de cumplimiento.

Guía de selección

Choose the PIC18F25Q43T-I/STX when you need the smallest possible Microchip MCU footprint (4x4 mm VQFN) with full 32 KB Flash, 2 KB SRAM and the new 12-bit ADCC for capacitive touch sensing. It is the correct choice for compact touch panels, sensor-conditioning nodes and small PWM-controlled lighting or motor boards. For the same silicon in a hand-solderable package, choose the PIC18F25Q43T-I/SO (SOIC-28); for an extended-temperature build, choose the PIC18F25Q43-E/SS or PIC18F25Q43-E/SO. For new designs with smaller Flash needs, the PIC18F24Q10-I/STX (16 KB) can reduce unit cost but loses the ADCC CVD peripheral. The PIC18F25Q10-I/STX is not recommended for new capacitive-touch designs because it uses the older 10-bit ADC without CVD support.

Notas de diseño

Decouple VDD with a 100 nF X7R ceramic placed within 2 mm of each VDD/VSS pin pair, and add a bulk 10 uF ceramic on the main VDD rail. The Q43 has two VDD/VSS pairs on the 28-VQFN layout (pins 7/8 and 25/26); both must be decoupled. This is critical for ADCC accuracy - noise on VDD couples directly into ADC readings. Place the ADCC reference decoupling capacitor (typically 100 nF on VREF+) adjacent to the device.

The 28-VQFN (4x4 mm) has an exposed thermal pad on the underside that MUST be soldered to a PCB thermal pad with at least 4 thermal vias to the inner ground plane. For 64 MHz operation from 5 V, core current is around 5-7 mA, so junction self-heating is negligible, but at extended temperature grades (E suffix up to +125C) the thermal pad is essential to meet the die-to-ambient thermal resistance of approximately 35 C/W.

Do not confuse the Q43 ADCC with the older PIC18 K-series ADC. The Q43 ADCC must be configured via the ADCON registers and the ADCC dedicated FIFO, and CVD touch channels require the correct TRIS and ADC channel selection. Also ensure PPS unlock sequence (PPSLOCKED bit) is correctly managed before remapping peripherals, otherwise I/O functions silently fail. Pin 3 (RA3) is shared with MCLR on some PIC18 configurations; if MCLR is enabled RA3 cannot be used as GPIO.

Route analog and digital traces on separate PCB layers where possible. Keep ADCC input traces short and isolated from PWM digital switching signals to avoid digital-noise coupling into touch measurements. The PPS feature lets you move digital peripherals away from sensitive analog pins, so place analog pins on the opposite side of the package from PWM outputs and high-speed comms. A 4-layer PCB with dedicated ground and power planes is recommended for mixed-signal designs.
