PIC18F2680-I/SO Descripción general

The Microchip Technology PIC18F2680-I/SO is an 8-bit enhanced flash microcontroller with an integrated ECAN (CAN 2.0B) controller, 64 KB of program flash memory organized as 32K x 16, and 3,328 bytes of RAM, housed in a 28-pin SOIC (0.295", 7.50 mm width) package. It executes instructions at up to 40 MHz (10 MIPS) from a 4.2 V to 5.5 V supply and provides 25 digital I/O pins, a 10-bit ADC with up to 8 channels, plus a 256-byte data EEPROM for non-volatile parameter storage. nanoWatt power management technology drops quiescent current to the microamp range during sleep, supporting energy-sensitive distributed designs.

What is an 8-bit PIC microcontroller? An 8-bit MCU is a single-chip computer that processes data in 8-bit chunks and falls under the broader category of microcontrollers, itself a sub-family of embedded processors. The PIC18F family is Microchip's high-performance 8-bit line that adds an enhanced instruction set, C-compiler-friendly architecture, and advanced peripherals such as ECAN and USB. PIC18F sits between the mid-range PIC16F and the 16-bit dsPIC/PIC24 families in Microchip's taxonomy, making it the typical choice when an engineer needs CAN, USB, or more peripherals without paying for a 16-bit core.

Key features of the PIC18F2680 include the enhanced CAN 2.0B module with acceptance filters and masks for selective message filtering on multi-node CAN networks, multiple 16-bit timers (Timer0/1/2/3), two Capture/Compare/PWM (CCP) modules, a Master SSP for SPI and I2C, an enhanced USART that supports LIN and RS-485, and a 10-bit ADC with auto-acquisition. The 64 KB self-programmable flash and 256-byte data EEPROM allow remote firmware updates on CAN-connected nodes, which is essential for service and recall scenarios in automotive and industrial deployments.

Typical applications include automotive and industrial CAN nodes, sensor conditioning front-ends with analog inputs, building automation gateways, low-cost motor peripherals, and any distributed control network where CAN 2.0B is the backbone bus. The wide SOIC package also supports legacy through-hole-replacement designs that benefit from a robust surface-mount mechanical outline.

When designing with this device, allocate one of the 28 pins to the ECAN TX/RX pair, ensure a clean 5 V rail because ADC accuracy degrades with supply ripple, and follow Microchip's ICD programming pinout when laying out the PCB to avoid rework if in-circuit debug is later required. This page synthesizes distributor stock and pricing, drop-in alternatives in the PIC18F family, and engineering design notes that are not consolidated in the manufacturer datasheet alone.

Aplicaciones típicas

PIC18F2680-I/SO es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: Automotive CAN Bus Nodes, Industrial Sensor Conditioning Nodes, Building Automation Gateways, Low-Cost Motor Control Peripherals, LIN Bus Subordinate Nodes, Remote Firmware-Updatable CAN Devices.

🚗

Automotive CAN Bus Nodes

The PIC18F2680-I/SO is purpose-built for in-cabin and chassis CAN nodes where ECAN 2.0B, 64 KB flash, and 25 I/O pins converge in a single chip. The integrated acceptance filters and masks allow the MCU to ignore irrelevant CAN frames without CPU wake-up, reducing bus load and saving nanoWatt-mode sleep current. With 64 KB flash it can host a full J1939 or CANopen stack plus application code, and the 28-SOIC package provides a robust automotive surface-mount footprint suited for under-dash ECUs.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Conditioning Nodes

The 10-bit ADC with up to 8 input channels, plus 25 digital I/O and ECAN bus, lets a single PIC18F2680 read multiple analog sensors and report them over a CAN backbone in industrial automation. nanoWatt sleep current in the low microamp range supports battery-backed remote sensor nodes that wake periodically to take readings. The 64 KB flash holds industrial protocol stacks (CANopen, DeviceNet slave) while the 3328-byte SRAM buffers incoming telegrams without loss.

🧩

Building Automation Gateways

Building automation controllers aggregate sensor data from HVAC, lighting, and security zones over CAN and forward to BACnet or Modbus hosts. The PIC18F2680's ECAN module handles the field-bus side while the enhanced USART provides RS-485 for trunk-line connection to a building management system. With 64 KB self-programmable flash, firmware changes can be pushed over the field bus without physical access to controllers, simplifying maintenance of large installations.

🏭

Low-Cost Motor Control Peripherals

Two Capture/Compare/PWM (CCP) modules drive brush-DC or stepper motor control loops at up to 40 MHz instruction throughput. The 10 MIPS speed and 10-bit ADC sample the back-EMF or current-sense amplifier at sufficient rates for sensorless trapezoidal commutation. Adding an ECAN link lets the peripheral accept torque/speed commands from a centralized motion controller, fitting modern distributed-motion architectures in conveyor and robotics applications.

🚗

LIN Bus Subordinate Nodes

The enhanced USART with LIN-capable baud-rate generator makes the PIC18F2680 well-suited for LIN 1.3/2.0/2.1 subordinate communication in body-control modules. Automotive LIN clusters (door modules, seat controllers, mirror adjusters) use the same ECAN-aware PIC18F family as a stepping stone to full CAN networks, sharing firmware IP and reducing development cost. The 256-byte EEPROM stores node configuration that survives battery disconnect events.

🖥️

Remote Firmware-Updatable CAN Devices

The 64 KB self-programmable flash and 256-byte data EEPROM enable field firmware updates over the CAN bus without physical access. This is essential for CAN-connected devices deployed in inaccessible locations (elevator controllers, wind turbine sensors, pipeline monitors) where physical service calls are expensive. The PIC18F2680's flash write/erase cycles per the Microchip datasheet (DS39646F) and CRC-checking capability ensure reliable in-the-field reprogramming.

Notas de diseño

The PIC18F2680-I/SO requires a clean 4.2 V to 5.5 V supply; ADC accuracy depends on a low-ripple rail because the 10-bit ADC reference is VDD-derived by default. Place a 0.1 uF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as possible to each VDD pin (pins 20 and the second VDD ball) and add a 10 uF bulk tantalum or aluminum polymer capacitor at the regulator output. Use a ferrite bead or L-C filter if the 5 V rail is shared with a switching converter.

The 28-SOIC and 28-SPDIP pinouts are NOT identical for PIC18F2680 - the SPDIP version exposes more I/O on PORTA than the SOIC because the SOIC pins 9 and 10 are OSC1/OSC2 by default. If your design switches between SOIC and SPDIP, verify the OSC and PORTA pin allocation in the pin compatibility chart (DS00148J2). When migrating to PIC18F2682-I/SO you must update the linker script for the larger 128 KB flash map.

Route the ECAN TX/RX pair (RB1/RB0) as a differential pair with 120-ohm characteristic impedance and 120-ohm termination at each end of the bus. Keep the pair short and avoid crossing digital switching signals to maintain the CAN signal integrity. Provide an ICD header footprint (PGC/PGD/MCLR/VSS/VDD) on the PCB even if you skip in-circuit debug in production - this saves rework time during development.

Keep the crystal or external clock traces to the PIC18F2680 short and symmetric. Use a ground guard ring around the crystal to reduce EMI injection into sensitive analog inputs. Place the VREF+ capacitor close to the RA3 pin if using an external ADC reference; nanoWatt sleep current is sensitive to floating analog inputs, so tie unused analog pins to VDD or VSS to minimize leakage.
