PIC24FJ32MC101-I/SO Descripción general

The Microchip Technology PIC24FJ32MC101-I/SO is a 16-bit microcontroller from the PIC24FJ32MC family, featuring 32KB of FLASH program memory and 2KB of RAM, packaged in a 20-pin SOIC (SO) wide-body 7.50mm package. It executes instructions at 16 MIPS throughput via a modified Harvard RISC architecture with an internal 32 MHz oscillator, while operating from a 3.0V to 3.6V single supply across an industrial -40C to +125C temperature range.

A PIC24F microcontroller is a 16-bit reduced instruction set computing (RISC) MCU in the broader PIC24F/PIC24H family of dsPIC-style microcontrollers from Microchip Technology. Within the wider product hierarchy, PIC24F belongs to the 16-bit microcontroller class -> microcontroller -> embedded controller -> semiconductor IC. The "24F" prefix denotes the FLASH-based, low-power variant optimised for cost-sensitive motor control and general-purpose applications, while the "MC" suffix in this part designates the Motor Control sub-family with hardware MCPWM, CTMU, and PPS peripherals.

Key features include a 16-channel 10-bit ADC with 500 ksps conversion rate, two UART modules, one SPI port, one I2C bus, five 16-bit timers, three analogue comparators, a Charge Time Measurement Unit (CTMU), and a Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) system that remaps digital peripherals to a wide range of I/O pins. The device integrates a 6-channel MCPWM (Motor Control PWM) module and supports up to 15 I/O pins in this 20-pin package. It also includes a configurable Watchdog Timer, brown-out reset, and an in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) interface.

Architecturally the PIC24FJ32MC101 combines a 16-bit datapath with a single-cycle ALU and hardware multiply/divide, allowing deterministic interrupt response and C-compiler efficient code. The CTMU enables capacitive touch sensing and precise time measurement, while the PPS router eliminates the fixed peripheral-to-pin mapping constraint of older PIC16/PIC18 parts. An integrated 8 MHz internal RC oscillator with PLL multiplication to 32 MHz removes the need for external crystals in many designs, reducing BOM cost.

Typical applications include BLDC and PMSM motor drives (low-voltage fan, pump, appliance control), small appliance and white goods motor control boards, LED lighting controllers, sensor interfaces (using CTMU for touch/proximity), and general-purpose 3.3V embedded control. Automotive infotainment auxiliary modules and consumer robotics also benefit from the wide supply and temperature ranges. The combination of small footprint, motor-control peripherals, and on-chip CTMU makes this part a frequent choice where designers need compact, single-chip motion control.

Designers should note that the 3.0V to 3.6V supply range is narrow - it is incompatible with 5V systems without level shifting. Decouple VDD/VSS with at least a 100 nF ceramic capacitor placed within 5 mm of the supply pins. The analog VDD/VSS pair requires a separate clean analog ground plane, and the ADC conversion accuracy is sensitive to high-frequency digital switching near AVSS - keep switching nodes and the MCU grounds segregated to one point.

What is the program memory size of PIC24FJ32MC101-I/SO?
The PIC24FJ32MC101-I/SO contains 32 KB of FLASH program memory, organised as 11K x 24-bit words in the PIC24F Harvard architecture. According to Microchip datasheet DS30009997, this storage is sufficient for embedded motor-control firmware including state machines, lookup tables for sinusoidal commutation, and small protocol stacks (Modbus, LIN). Data RAM is 2 KB - pair with external EEPROM for non-volatile parameter storage.
What is the maximum CPU speed of PIC24FJ32MC101-I/SO?
The PIC24FJ32MC101-I/SO runs the CPU at up to 32 MHz, achieving 16 MIPS of instruction throughput because every instruction executes in one cycle (except program-flow branches, which take two). The on-chip 8 MHz internal RC oscillator is multiplied by the PLL x4 to derive FOSC = 32 MHz. Most instructions complete in 62.5 ns at full speed, which is adequate for 20 kHz PWM update rates and PID loops at multi-kHz sampling rates.
Does PIC24FJ32MC101-I/SO support 5V operation?
No, the PIC24FJ32MC101-I/SO operates strictly from 3.0 V to 3.6 V. Applying 5 V to any I/O pin or VDD will damage the device. For 5V-tolerant logic interfacing, use a level translator such as the TXS0108E or a resistor divider on inputs. For 5V systems requiring PIC24F performance, choose a PIC24FV variant or PIC24EP/PIC24HJ family rated for wider supplies.
What is the difference between PIC24FJ32MC101-I/SO and PIC24FJ32MC101-E/SO?
Both parts share the identical 20-pin SOIC package, 32 KB FLASH, 2 KB RAM, and motor-control peripheral set. The only difference is the operating temperature grade: the "-I" (industrial) variant in PIC24FJ32MC101-I/SO is rated -40 C to +125 C, while the "-E" (extended) variant PIC24FJ32MC101-E/SO is rated -40 C to +125 C with a different test profile. Both are pin-to-pin drop-in replacements; you can substitute them on the same PCB when the temperature profile allows.
How many PWM channels does PIC24FJ32MC101-I/SO have?
The PIC24FJ32MC101-I/SO provides 6 MCPWM (Motor Control PWM) outputs with complementary mode, programmable dead-time, and centre-aligned or edge-aligned operation. This makes it suitable for three-phase BLDC/PMSM motor drives using a 3-half-bridge inverter. Each PWM pair can be independently dead-time-controlled to prevent shoot-through in the power stage. The MCPWM also triggers the ADC for current-sensing synchronisation.

Notas de diseño

The PIC24FJ32MC101-I/SO operates strictly from 3.0 V to 3.6 V; 5 V systems require level translation. Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of VDD (pin 18) and a 10 uF bulk capacitor on the same supply rail. The analog AVDD/AVSS pair (pins 19, 20) must be powered even if the ADC is unused, with its own 100 nF decoupling cap. Use a star-ground topology: connect digital VSS and analog AVSS at a single point near the MCU to avoid ground-loop noise coupling into ADC readings.

Do not leave the MCLR pin (pin 1) floating - it must be tied to VDD via a 10 kohm pull-up resistor to ensure proper reset behaviour. Floating MCLR causes erratic starts and ICSP programming failures. The ICSP programming pins PGED1 (pin 4) and PGEC1 (pin 5) must not be loaded with more than 50 pF of stray capacitance, or programming will fail - keep these traces short and away from switching nodes. Always check the device errata (DS80000490) before finalising the BOM, as some silicon revisions have ADC and PWM bugs.

For motor-control applications, segregate the MCU ground plane from the power-stage ground; join them only at the source of the DC bus (bulk capacitor negative terminal) to prevent high di/dt switching noise from corrupting ADC current-sense readings. Keep shunt-resistor traces to the ADC input differential pair shorter than 20 mm and symmetric to avoid mismatch. Place the MCPWM outputs (PWM1L/PWM1H, PWM2L/PWM2H, PWM3L/PWM3H) routed as matched-length differential pairs to minimise PWM skew into the gate driver.

When using the 10-bit ADC at 500 ksps, source impedance above 5 kohm causes conversion errors due to sample-and-hold settling. Add a small external unity-gain op-amp buffer (such as MCP6001) on high-impedance sensor lines. For CTMU capacitive-touch designs, surround touch pads with a grounded guard ring and connect the shield to an MCU pin configured as a low-impedance output to reduce moisture and ESD interference. Decouple the touch pad RC network with at least 100 nF near the MCU pin.
