PIC32MX120F064HT-50I/MR Descripción general

The Microchip Technology PIC32MX120F064HT-50I/MR is a 32-bit MIPS32 M4K microcontroller running at up to 50 MHz (83 DMIPS), integrating 64 KB Flash and 8 KB SRAM in a 64-pin QFN (MR, 9x9 mm) package. It targets cost-sensitive embedded designs that need graphical user interfaces, audio codec interfaces, and rich serial connectivity in a single low-power MCU.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, program memory (Flash), working memory (RAM), and a rich set of peripherals such as timers, ADCs, and communication interfaces. PIC32MX1xx parts belong to the MIPS32-based PIC32MX family, which sits between 8-bit PIC MCUs and higher-end Cortex-M parts in Microchip's portfolio. They are widely used for USB device, graphics, and audio applications where deterministic interrupt response and low BOM cost are required.

Key features of this device include Peripheral Pin Select (PPS), which remaps most digital peripherals to any I/O, a Parallel Master Port (PMP) with dual buffers for graphics and external memory, two I2S modules plus four SPI/I2S-capable serial interfaces for audio codecs, a 10-bit 1 MSPS ADC with up to 28 channels, five 16-bit timers, RTCC, and CTMU for capacitive touch. The 'I' suffix denotes an industrial -40C to +85C operating range and '50' denotes 50 MHz maximum core clock.

Architecturally, the PIC32MX120F064H uses the MIPS M4K 32-bit core with single-cycle multiply, hardware divide assist, 5-stage pipeline, and a tightly coupled prefetch module that hides Flash latency. The 64 KB single-panel Flash and 8 KB RAM are adequate for small RTOSes (FreeRTOS, OpenRTOS) and USB device stacks. DMA moves peripheral-to-memory traffic without CPU intervention, freeing cycles for application code.

Typical applications include low-cost graphical HMI with segmented or small TFT displays, USB audio class (UAC 1.0) headsets and USB HID peripherals, sensor hubs with I2C/SPI device aggregation, and industrial control panels with capacitive touch buttons. The wide peripheral set also supports basic motor control loops via PWM and quadrature encoder interfaces.

Designers should budget Flash endurance (typical 20k cycles) and RAM headroom for stack growth under RTOS, and reserve one timer for the RTCC when implementing low-power sleep modes. The MR package has an exposed pad that must be soldered to a sufficient copper pour for thermal dissipation.

Notas de diseño

The 64-QFN (MR) package has a large exposed thermal pad on the bottom that must be soldered to a copper pour of at least 1 square inch to meet the industrial -40C to +85C operating range at full 50 MHz. Per Microchip's family datasheet, neglecting the exposed pad will cause thermal runaway at higher ambient temperatures and may reduce MTBF. Use thermal vias in the copper pour for additional heat spreading into inner PCB layers, and ensure the solder paste stencil aperture covers at least 80% of the exposed pad for reliable reflow.

Add 0.1 uF ceramic decoupling capacitors as close as possible to every VDD pin, plus a single bulk 4.7 uF or 10 uF tantalum/ceramic near the MCU's main VDD entry point. The PIC32MX120F064HT-50I/MR runs on a single 2.3V to 3.6V supply; if USB is used, VUSB requires its own 0.1 uF + 1 uF bypass pair per the family datasheet. Avoid routing high-speed traces under the exposed thermal pad to minimize parasitic coupling.

Do not exceed the maximum 50 MHz system clock by overclocking the internal PLL - Microchip specifies 50 MHz as the maximum for the PIC32MX120 sub-family. When using Peripheral Pin Select (PPS), remember that PPS inputs must be unlocked via CFGCON.IOLOCK before configuration and re-locked afterward for safety. CTMU calibration must be performed per the family datasheet for accurate capacitive touch readings; without calibration, touch sensitivity drifts with temperature.

Keep crystal traces short and symmetric; the PIC32MX120F064HT-50I/MR requires the primary oscillator (POSC) load capacitors to be placed within 1-2 mm of the OSC1/OSC2 pins to minimize jitter. The 32.768 kHz secondary oscillator (SOSC) for RTCC has the same requirement. Route USB D+/D- as a 90 ohm differential pair with matched lengths if USB is used, and place the 0.1 uF VUSB bypass capacitor within 3 mm of the VUSB pin per USB 2.0 layout guidelines.
