PIC32MZ0512EFK064-E/MR Descripción general

The Microchip PIC32MZ0512EFK064-E/MR is a 32-bit MIPS32 M-Class microcontroller running at 180 MHz with 512 KB Flash and 128 KB SRAM, housed in a 64-pin QFN (9x9 mm) package with exposed pad. It is part of the PIC32MZ EF family with FPU and Crypto engine, featuring HS USB, Ethernet MAC, 12-bit 18 MSPS ADC, and dual-panel Flash for live-update firmware support.

What is a PIC32 microcontroller? A PIC32 is a 32-bit MIPS-based microcontroller from Microchip Technology offering higher performance than 8-bit/16-bit PIC MCUs. The PIC32MZ EF family adds a MIPS Warrior M-class core with FPU for IEEE 754 single/double-precision math, DSP extensions with single-cycle MAC and four 64-bit accumulators, hardware crypto acceleration, and dedicated peripherals for connectivity (HS USB, Ethernet, CAN). It sits in the hierarchy of MCU → 32-bit MCU → application processor class.

Key features of the PIC32MZ0512EFK064 include 200 MHz/330 DMIPS core capability, hardware crypto engine, 12-bit 18 MSPS 24-channel ADC, dual-panel Flash for live-update support, MMU for RTOS and secure applications, and -40°C to +125°C extended-industrial operating range (the -E suffix). The Crypto engine accelerates AES, DES, 3DES, SHA, MD5, and RSA operations. The 64-QFN package with 0.5 mm pitch and exposed pad supports compact high-density PCB designs with good thermal performance.

Typical applications include industrial IoT gateways, automotive body and infotainment ECUs, industrial HMI and graphics, motor control (BLDC/PMSM), USB/Ethernet-connected embedded products, secure payment terminals, and edge devices requiring hardware-accelerated cryptography.

When designing with this device, ensure PCB thermal relief to the exposed pad and follow Microchip's PIC32MZ hardware design checklist for decoupling, trace impedance, and oscillator layout. Verify your development toolchain (MPLAB X IDE, XC32 compiler) target the specific silicon revision.

  • 64-QFN 9x9 mm compact footprint with exposed thermal pad (frente a PIC32MZ0512EFK064-E/PT (TQFP-64 10x10))

Notas de diseño

The 64-QFN exposed pad MUST be soldered to a contiguous copper ground plane to achieve the rated thermal performance. Recommended thermal via array: 9 vias in a 3x3 grid under the exposed pad, each 0.3 mm diameter, plugged or tented on the top side. Without thermal vias, junction-to-ambient thermal resistance can increase by 30-40%. For sustained DSP or motor-control workloads running 100+ MHz core clock, ensure the PCB copper area exceeds 1 square inch for the ground paddle.

Place 0.1 uF decoupling capacitors within 2 mm of each VDD pin pair. Use a 4.7 uF bulk capacitor on each VDD rail. The 64-QFN 0.5 mm pitch requires careful trace escape routing - use dog-bone fanout or via-in-pad for the inner ring of pins. Maintain a continuous ground plane beneath the MCU; avoid splitting the ground plane under the analog ADC traces. Route the USB DP/DM pair as 90 ohm differential length-matched within 150 mil.

Do not exceed 3.3V +/- 10% on any VDD pin. The Ethernet PHY (if used externally) requires 25 MHz reference clock with +/- 50 ppm accuracy. Programming pins PGECx/PGEDx must be accessible for ICSP - do not assign them to inaccessible GPIO functions. The dual-panel Flash live update requires bootloader configuration in Config Bits; without it, the dual-panel feature remains unused. Always check the device errata document on microchip.com before finalizing the design.
