AD2S82ALPZ Présentation
A resolver-to-digital converter (R/D converter or RDC) is a mixed-signal data acquisition IC that converts the analog angle information encoded on a brushless resolver (or synchro) into a digital position word. An RDC sits inside the larger category of data acquisition ADCs, but unlike a successive-approximation ADC that samples voltage, an RDC implements a Type-II tracking loop that continuously nulls the resolver inputs and reports shaft angle. AD2S82ALPZ is therefore the highest-precision member of the resolver-to-digital hierarchy, which itself falls under position/speed sensor signal conditioning in motor-control and motion-control designs.
Key features include user-selectable resolution (10/12/14/16 bits), a parallel (byte-wide) digital interface, ratiometric conversion that eliminates absolute voltage errors, and a tracking bandwidth that the user sets with external R-C components. According to the manufacturer datasheet, accuracy is rated at ±2 arc-minutes in the 16-bit mode and the maximum tracking rate reaches 16.25 revolutions per second. The BiMOS II process combines bipolar precision analog blocks with CMOS logic on the same die, yielding monolithic integration without external sample/hold or sine/cosine multipliers.
Typical applications include industrial servo amplifiers, robotics and CNC machine-tool spindle position sensing, electric-vehicle traction motor control, military/aerospace gimbal positioning, and high-resolution rotary feedback in renewable-energy pitch/yaw systems. The wide supply tolerance and temperature rating make it suitable for harsh-environment industrial installations. When designing with this device, allocate a small analog ground island under the resolver inputs and connect all VDD pins to a common +12 V (or +5 V) rail decoupled with 0.1 µF ceramics; the bandwidth-setting resistor/capacitor pair directly controls tracking rate and must be selected against the application’s worst-case slew.

Applications typiques
AD2S82ALPZ convient pour 6 applications: Industrial Servo Amplifier Feedback, Robotics and CNC Machine Tool Spindles, Electric Vehicle Traction Motor Control, Aerospace Gimbal and Flight Control Position Sensing, Wind Turbine Pitch and Yaw Control, High-Resolution Rotary Feedback in Process Automation.
Industrial Servo Amplifier Feedback
The AD2S82ALPZ delivers up to 16-bit angular position resolution with +/-2 arc-minute accuracy, which is sufficient to close the position loop on precision industrial servo amplifiers driving brushless AC servo motors. The parallel byte-wide interface drops directly onto legacy DSP and FPGA motion-control buses, and the 16.25 rps tracking rate covers virtually all spindle and axis speeds in factory automation. Designers typically pair the AD2S82ALPZ with the AD2S99 resolver excitation driver and a Tamagawa-style brushless resolver on the motor shaft. Unlike incremental encoders, resolver feedback is inherently absolute and survives shock, dust, and oil mist common on factory floors.
Recommandé
Robotics and CNC Machine Tool Spindles
Robotics arms and CNC spindle heads demand high-resolution absolute position feedback that survives vibration, coolant, and contamination - exactly what a resolver-to-digital link provides. The AD2S82ALPZ tracks up to 16.25 rps and resolves 16 bits per revolution, delivering better than 20 arc-second resolution when interpolated across a multi-pole resolver. The PLCC-44 footprint has been used for decades in CNC retrofit designs because it is hand-solderable and accepts both through-hole and SMT lead-form variants. The ratiometric conversion principle rejects absolute signal amplitude errors caused by cabling, so position accuracy is preserved across long cable runs in large machine tools.
Recommandé
Electric Vehicle Traction Motor Control
In EV traction inverters the AD2S82ALPZ provides resolver feedback for the rotor angle of the traction machine, which the inverter needs to produce torque at every speed including standstill. Its parallel output pairs with traction DSPs such as the ADSP-CM408 or similar automotive microcontrollers, and its wide operating envelope tolerates the under-hood temperature range required by ISO 26262 systems. The PLCC package is preferred for non-safety-critical retrofits and EV conversion kits where mechanical robustness of the resolver matters more than minimum package size. The part consumes only 30 mA, leaving plenty of headroom for the resolver excitation driver budget.
Recommandé
Aerospace Gimbal and Flight Control Position Sensing
Aerospace gimbals, antenna pedestals, and flight-control surface feedback loops use resolvers because they tolerate radiation, vibration, and temperature extremes that defeat optical encoders. The AD2S82ALPZ and its temperature-grade sibling AD2S82AJPZ share the same die, allowing the same PCB to be populated with either grade depending on the program. Sixteen-bit resolution is more than enough to drive inertially stabilized gimbals at sub-mrad accuracy, and the parallel interface simplifies integration with radiation-tolerant FPGAs. Designers must derate the tracking rate at high altitude due to thinner atmosphere affecting resolver coupling.
Recommandé
Wind Turbine Pitch and Yaw Control
Wind turbines pitch each blade and yaw the nacelle using resolver feedback because the resolver survives the lightning, icing, and salt-spray environment that destroys incremental encoders. The AD2S82ALPZ reports 16-bit blade pitch at update rates compatible with hydraulic pitch actuators, and the analog velocity signal can be used directly by the pitch controller without further computation. The wide operating temperature range and high reliability make the AD2S82ALPZ a long-standing choice for turbine OEMs. The 44-terminal PLCC package is easy to field-replace during scheduled maintenance windows.
Recommandé
High-Resolution Rotary Feedback in Process Automation
Process automation valves, large-rotary actuators, and damper positioners increasingly specify resolver feedback because the absolute position survives power interruption and noisy industrial EMI better than incremental encoders. The AD2S82ALPZ delivers 16-bit absolute position with ratiometric conversion that is insensitive to cable length, which matters in large refineries and chemical plants where actuator-to-controller distances exceed 100 m. The parallel byte-wide interface drops onto legacy 8-bit and 16-bit PLC position modules without glue logic. The wide supply tolerance supports 5 V and 12 V industrial backplanes.

Notes de conception
Estimated: the AD2S82ALPZ draws 30 mA from a single +5 V or +12 V rail; total board power is therefore roughly 150 mW to 360 mW. Decouple each VDD pin with a 0.1 microfarat ceramic capacitor placed within 5 mm of the package, and add a bulk 10 microfarat tantalum or aluminum polymer capacitor to absorb the dynamic current spikes from the resolver excitation driver. The digital and analog VDD rails may share a common supply provided they are joined at a single star ground.
Route the resolver SIN, COS, and EXC signals as a matched-length differential pair on the top layer over a continuous ground pour. Keep digital data bus traces (DB0 through DB15) away from the analog resolver inputs and place a guard ground trace between them. The bandwidth-setting RC network pins (BW_R, BW_C) must be physically short and located on the analog ground island to avoid noise injection into the tracking loop.
The AD2S82ALPZ tracking loop is sensitive to the resolver excitation frequency stability. Use a clean low-jitter excitation source such as the AD2S99 companion driver. Common pitfalls include ground loops between the excitation driver and the RDC, undersized coupling capacitors on SIN/COS that attenuate the high-frequency content, and cable resonances above 20 kHz that inject position noise.
