ADUM1301ARW-RL Présentation
A digital isolator is a semiconductor device that transfers logic-level signals between two electrically separated circuits, replacing legacy optocouplers. Isolator functions are essential isolation domains in any system that requires safety isolation between low-voltage control logic and hazardous high-voltage domains, while still allowing high-speed data exchange. The isolator category belongs to the broader signal-conditioning and isolation IC family, sitting within the interface IC hierarchy.
Key features include 25 kV/µs common-mode transient immunity (CMTI), low power operation (1.2 mA per channel at 0-2 Mbps, 5 V supply), 32 mA per channel maximum at 90 Mbps operation, automotive qualification per the datasheet, and a wide-body 16-SOIC package with 7.5 mm body width to support reinforced insulation creepage. The device is qualified for automotive applications and offers default low outputs.
The ADUM1301ARW-RL uses monolithic air-core transformer technology combined with high-speed CMOS, avoiding the LEDs and photodiodes used in optocouplers. This eliminates the design difficulties associated with optocouplers (current-transfer-ratio degradation, slow switching, and LED aging) while providing superior common-mode transient immunity and stable timing across temperature.
Typical applications include isolated gate logic in motor drives and industrial inverters, isolated data acquisition in PLC systems and process control, isolated SPI / RS-232 / RS-485 interfaces, isolated logic level translation between microcontrollers and power stages, and isolated control signals in medical and energy systems that require reinforced insulation per IEC 60747-17.
Design consideration: the wide-body SOIC-16 (0.295" body width) provides the required creepage distance for reinforced insulation at 2500 Vrms. Ensure that no copper traces or vias run beneath the package body between the two isolation domains, and place decoupling capacitors (0.1 µF ceramic) as close as possible to each VDD pin.

Applications typiques
ADUM1301ARW-RL convient pour 7 applications: Isolated Gate Driver Interface for Motor Drives, Isolated SPI Interface for Data Acquisition Systems, Isolated RS-485 / Industrial Fieldbus Interface, Isolated Logic-Level Translation Between Domains, Isolated Gate Logic for EV Battery Management Systems, Isolated USB / UART Bridge for Industrial PCs, Isolated LED Lighting Control Interface.
Isolated Gate Driver Interface for Motor Drives
The ADUM1301ARW-RL provides reinforced 2500 Vrms isolation between a low-voltage MCU and high-voltage IGBT/MOSFET gate drivers in industrial motor drives and solar inverters. With three channels (2 forward + 1 reverse), it cleanly carries PWM signals, fault feedback, and enable signals across the isolation barrier. Its 25 kV/µs CMTI prevents false triggering on the fast dV/dt transients produced by 600-1200 V IGBT bridges, while the 1 Mbps grade-A bandwidth comfortably handles switching frequencies up to 50 kHz with sub-100 ns channel-to-channel skew, preserving PWM timing accuracy for three-phase motor control.
Recommandé
Isolated SPI Interface for Data Acquisition Systems
The ADUM1301ARW-RL isolates SPI signals (SCLK, MOSI, MISO) plus an enable line between an ADC/DAC front-end and a microcontroller in precision data acquisition systems. The 100 ns typical propagation delay and 40 ns pulse-width distortion preserve SPI timing margins at clock rates up to 1 MHz (grade-A ceiling). The 2500 Vrms isolation allows the ADC front-end to float with the patient or sensor, eliminating ground loops in medical, energy-metering, and instrumentation applications while maintaining measurement integrity.
Recommandé
Isolated RS-485 / Industrial Fieldbus Interface
For industrial nodes (T/R) interface nodes, the ADUM1301ARW-RL isolates driver-enable, TX, and RX lines between a UART/MCU and a transceiver such as the ADM485. The wide-body 16-SOIC provides the creepage required for reinforced insulation per IEC 60747-17 in industrial environments. Operating from 2.7 V to 5.5 V on either side, the device bridges 3.3 V MCU logic and 5 V transceiver supplies without additional level-shifters, while the 25 kV/µs CMTI rejects fast transients on the fieldbus cable during ESD or lightning events.
Recommandé
Isolated Logic-Level Translation Between Domains
The ADUM1301ARW-RL provides isolated level shifting between two circuits operating at different supply voltages (2.7 V to 5.5 V on each side). Engineers route GND signals to a 1.8 V MCU on one side and a 5 V sensor or actuator driver on the other side without any external level-shifter ICs. The three-channel configuration carries direction control, data-ready, and interrupt signals in a single chip, replacing three discrete logic-level shifter channels. The 1 Mbps grade-A bandwidth suits I2C, GPIO, and SPI control signals in mixed-voltage designs.
Recommandé
Isolated Gate Logic for EV Battery Management Systems
In electric vehicle (EV) battery management systems (BMS) and high-voltage DC-DC converters, the ADUM1301ARW-RL isolates communication between a low-voltage BMS master controller and the high-voltage battery stack. The AEC-Q100 automotive qualification, 2500 Vrms isolation, and 25 kV/µs CMTI support 400 V and 800 V battery architectures. Three channels handle SPI or CAN signals plus wake/sleep control, allowing the master to read cell voltages and temperatures safely across the isolation barrier.
Recommandé
Isolated USB / UART Bridge for Industrial PCs
The ADUM1301ARW-RL isolates USB-to-UART converter logic (TX, RX, plus a control/reset line) between a host PC's USB port and an industrial downstream MCU or sensor module. The 2500 Vrms isolation protects the PC and operator from fault voltages on the industrial side, while the 1 Mbps grade-A data rate supports full-speed UART up to 921,600 baud. Combined with a wide-body SOIC footprint, this is a common topology for isolated debug ports, isolated serial consoles, and isolated IoT edge-node interfaces.
Recommandé
Isolated LED Lighting Control Interface
The ADUM1301ARW-RL isolates dimming control signals (PWM, enable, fault feedback) between a low-voltage lighting MCU and a high-current LED driver stage. The 2500 Vrms isolation allows the LED driver to operate at 48 V to 380 V DC-bus levels commonly found in commercial LED fixtures, while keeping the control circuitry at SELV (safety extra-low voltage). The 1 Mbps grade-A bandwidth handles PWM dimming frequencies from 100 Hz up to several kHz without timing degradation.

Notes de conception
Use a wide-body SOIC-16 footprint (0.295" / 7.5 mm body width) to achieve the creepage and clearance required for 2500 Vrms reinforced isolation per IEC 60747-17. Do not place any copper traces, vias, or polygons beneath the package body between side 1 and side 2. Maintain at least 4 mm of PCB clearance under the isolator body, and route side-1 and side-2 traces on opposite PCB layers separated by the package body.
Place a 0.1 µF low-ESR ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as possible to each VDD pin (pins 1, 16 for VDD1; pin 9 for VDD2), with a 10 µF bulk capacitor nearby. The dual independent supplies allow each side to operate at different voltages (e.g., 3.3 V on MCU side and 5 V on driver side), but the ground reference of each side MUST remain isolated. Tie each side's GND pins (pin 2 / 15 for GND1; pin 8 for GND2) to that side's ground plane.
Although the iCoupler architecture provides 25 kV/µs CMTI, keep high-dV/dt signals (gate drive lines, switching power traces) at least 5 mm away from the isolator's input/output traces. If signal-integrity analysis shows crosstalk issues, add a guard trace tied to local GND between the isolator and high-dV/dt signals. For SPI data rates approaching the 1 Mbps ceiling, add a small series resistor (22-33 Ω) at each output to dampen transmission-line reflections.
Do not assume all four NC pins are floating - pins 6, 7, 13, and 14 have no internal connection but the datasheet recommends leaving them floating for best CMTI performance. Do not load any output pin above 4 mA or below -4 mA. Verify that the channel direction (2/1 + 1R) matches your schematic: if your design needs 1/2 + 1R, use the ADuM1300 family instead. Do not bypass the isolator for any signal path including enable or fault-feedback.
