AS1522-T Présentation
A SAR ADC is a type of analog-to-digital converter that uses a binary search algorithm with an internal capacitive charge-redistribution DAC to approximate the input voltage in N clock cycles for N bits of resolution. SAR ADCs are valued for low latency (one conversion latency), deterministic behavior, and excellent DC accuracy with no pipeline delay, distinguishing them from pipeline or delta-sigma architectures. AS1522 sits inside the broader data-acquisition IC category, which itself belongs to the signal-chain and power-management hierarchy typical of mixed-signal embedded designs.
Key features include 10-bit resolution with no missing codes, a true-differential input stage with software-configurable unipolar/bipolar ranges, an internal 2.5 V reference (with external-reference override), a low 1.5 mA typical supply current, and an automatic power-down mode that drops consumption to under 1 µA between conversions. The 4-input mux allows direct connection to multiple sensors or signals without an external analog switch.
Typical applications include portable instrumentation, battery monitoring systems, industrial process-control loops, factory automation sensor interfaces, and 4-20 mA loop-powered measurement. The combination of low quiescent current and small 16-TSSOP footprint makes AS1522 attractive for handheld meters, IoT edge nodes, and energy-harvesting systems where every microamp matters.
When designing with the AS1522-T, place the supply decoupling capacitor (1 µF plus 0.1 µF ceramic) as close as possible to the VDD pin, and keep analog and digital grounds separated with a single-point connection underneath the IC. Use the shutdown pin between conversions to maximize battery life, and verify SPI timing against the timing diagram in the manufacturer datasheet to avoid read-out errors at maximum clock rate.

Applications typiques
AS1522-T convient pour 6 applications: Portable Battery Monitoring, Industrial Process Control Sensor Interface, IoT Edge Sensor Node, Handheld Digital Multimeter (DMM), Factory Automation Data Acquisition Module, Energy-Harvesting Measurement System.
Portable Battery Monitoring
The AS1522-T's 4-channel input multiplexer and <1 µA power-down current make it a strong fit for portable multi-cell battery monitoring in handheld meters and medical devices. The 10-bit resolution covers cell-voltage telemetry with ±10 mV precision over a 0-5 V scale, while the SPI interface connects directly to a low-power MCU. Active current is roughly 1.5 mA during conversion and drops below 1 µA in shutdown between samples, preserving battery life in long-runtime applications. Reference the manufacturer datasheet typical application circuit when laying out the analog front-end.
Recommandé
Industrial Process Control Sensor Interface
Industrial 4-20 mA loop-powered sensors and process-control transmitters benefit from the AS1522-T's 4-channel mux, true-differential inputs, and bipolar input range support. The 2.7-5.25 V single-supply operation tolerates 24 V loop-derived rails after regulation. With 10-bit resolution and ~73 kSPS throughput, the device can digitize multiple sensor channels per scan cycle, while the SPI bus isolates noisy industrial buses from the ADC. Pair with an external instrumentation amp for high-common-mode rejection, and use the shutdown pin to synchronize conversions with sensor excitation.
Recommandé
IoT Edge Sensor Node
IoT edge nodes that aggregate multiple sensor inputs (temperature, humidity, light, pressure) benefit from the AS1522-T's 4-channel mux and ultra-low shutdown current. The 16-TSSOP package fits space-constrained sensor boards, and the SPI/QSPI/MICROWIRE interface connects to virtually any ARM Cortex-M or RISC-V host MCU. A typical design wakes the MCU on a sensor interrupt, takes one SAR conversion, and returns to sleep - the AS1522-T's <1 µA shutdown current preserves coin-cell life. The internal 2.5 V reference further simplifies BOM by eliminating an external reference IC.
Recommandé
Handheld Digital Multimeter (DMM)
Handheld DMMs and portable test instruments use the AS1522-T's bipolar-input capability to measure both voltage and current ranges with autoranging signal conditioning. The 10-bit resolution gives ~0.1% full-scale precision, sufficient for general-purpose field meters, while the SAR architecture provides instant single-shot latency without the filter-settling delay of sigma-delta converters. The 16-TSSOP footprint is well matched to compact handheld PCBs, and the SPI interface supports fast mode for live scope-like updates on the display.
Recommandé
Factory Automation Data Acquisition Module
Factory automation PLC and remote-IO modules digitize multiple analog sensor channels (pressure, flow, temperature) using a SAR ADC like the AS1522-T with its 4-input mux and SPI control. The 2.7-5.25 V supply range aligns with industrial 24V->5V regulated rails, and the deterministic SAR latency simplifies deterministic-IO timing budgets. Multi-module deployments daisy-chain AS1522-T devices on a single SPI bus to aggregate dozens of channels per controller. The shutdown pin supports synchronized sampling across modules triggered by an external sync signal.
Recommandé
Energy-Harvesting Measurement System
Energy-harvesting wireless sensor nodes that measure strain, vibration, or thermal-gradient signals use the AS1522-T's low active current (~1.5 mA) and <1 µA power-down current to maximize harvested-energy efficiency. The internal 2.5 V reference reduces component count, while the 4-channel mux supports multi-axis sensor arrays (e.g., 3-axis strain + temperature). The SAR architecture's deterministic single-shot conversion simplifies duty-cycled measurement protocols where every joule counts. The 16-TSSOP package and SPI interface integrate cleanly into compact, low-cost harvester PCBs.

Notes de conception
The AS1522-T active supply current is approximately 1.5 mA during conversion, dropping to <1 µA in shutdown. To maximize battery life, drive the SHDN pin high (active-low logic) between conversions and only enable the device for the duration of the actual SAR conversion cycle. Add a 1 µF bulk + 0.1 µF ceramic decoupling pair on VDD (pin 7), placed within 3 mm of the pin to suppress digital switching transients from coupling into the analog input.
Use a single-point ground star connection between analog GND (pin 5) and the digital GND plane directly underneath the IC. Route analog input traces (CH0-CH3) as short, guarded differential pairs and keep them well away from the SPI clock (SCLK) and DOUT traces. The exposed analog reference pin (REF, pin 6) requires a 0.1 µF-1 µF low-ESR ceramic bypass capacitor; a noisy or undersized reference cap will degrade SNR and INL.
When using the internal 2.5 V reference, do not drive any external load on the REF pin beyond the recommended bypass capacitor. For ratiometric measurements (e.g., bridge or thermistor sensors), switch to external-reference mode and drive REF from the sensor excitation rail to cancel reference drift. Ensure SCLK rise/fall times are <25 ns and CS setup/hold times meet the datasheet timing diagram; violating setup/hold will corrupt the conversion result.
Do not leave unused analog input channels floating - tie them to mid-supply or ground to prevent input leakage from injecting crosstalk into active channels. Do not exceed the absolute-maximum VDD rating of 6 V or apply input voltages beyond VDD + 0.3 V / -0.3 V on CH0-CH3 without input clamping. When daisy-chaining multiple AS1522-T devices, ensure the CS lines are correctly decoded; do not assume SPI broadcast mode works without verifying the timing diagram in the manufacturer datasheet.
