AS1529-BTDR Présentation
A SAR ADC is a successive-approximation-register analog-to-digital converter that uses a binary search algorithm with a precision DAC and comparator to convert one sample per conversion clock cycle. SAR ADCs occupy the middle of the converter hierarchy between flash converters (fastest, highest power) and sigma-delta converters (highest resolution, slower). The AS1529 specifically belongs to the low-power SAR family of precision data converters, often grouped with general-purpose 8-to-12-bit SARs for industrial, instrumentation, and battery-powered sensor read-out applications.
Key features include 10-bit resolution with no missing codes, a 150 ksps sampling rate per channel, an input span accepting 0 V to VDD (unipolar) or ±VDD (pseudo-differential bipolar) signals, a low power-down current between conversions, and an integrated 2-channel analog input multiplexer that simplifies dual-sensor sampling with one chip. The serial interface supports SPI, QSPI, and MICROWIRE-compatible hosts for direct connection to most modern microcontrollers without glue logic.
The AS1529 uses a charge-redistribution DAC architecture based on a binary-weighted capacitor array, which inherently provides a sample-and-hold function on each input. This sample-and-hold action on the input lets the ADC accurately capture fast-moving analog signals; combined with low aperture delay and the differential input option, it offers good common-mode noise rejection for ground-bounce-tolerant measurements in mixed-signal environments.
Typical applications include portable battery-powered data-acquisition modules, two-sensor instrumentation front-ends, handheld measurement instruments, process-control analog input boards, and medical or industrial sensor read-out cards where 8 to 10 bits of resolution is sufficient. The wide supply range also supports direct connection to 3 V or 5 V microcontrollers such as the ATmega or PIC families.
When designing with the AS1529, place the 0.1 µF VDD bypass capacitor within 1 cm of the supply pin and route the serial clock (SCLK) on a short, impedance-controlled trace to keep digital switching noise from coupling into the analog inputs. Also drive CS low only after SCLK has stabilized to avoid spurious conversions.

Applications typiques
AS1529-BTDR convient pour 6 applications: Portable Battery-Powered Data Acquisition Module, Handheld Measurement Instrument Front-End, Two-Sensor Industrial Analog Input Module, Medical Sensor Read-Out Board, Process Control Analog Input Card, Audio-Bandwidth Signal Acquisition.
Portable Battery-Powered Data Acquisition Module
The AS1529-BTDR is a strong fit for portable battery-powered data-acquisition modules where wall-power is unavailable. Its 2.7 V to 5.25 V single-supply operation runs directly from two alkaline or NiMH cells, while its sub-1 mW full-speed dissipation extends battery life. With an integrated 2-channel input mux, two sensors (such as a thermistor and a strain gauge) can be sampled through a single 8-TDFN device, cutting PCB area in wearable sensor pods and wireless condition-monitoring loggers compared to using two single-channel ADCs.
Recommandé
Handheld Measurement Instrument Front-End
In handheld DMMs, clamp meters, and field-calibration instruments the AS1529-BTDR reads two analog signals (voltage and current) at 150 ksps total throughput. The wide 2.7-5.25 V supply range allows direct connection to a 3.3 V MCU rail without level shifters, and the SPI/MICROWIRE-compatible interface drops into most low-cost Cortex-M0 or AVR hosts. The 8-TDFN EP (3x3 mm) footprint survives inside tight instrument enclosures, while the -40 to +85 C operating range tolerates outdoor field use.
Recommandé
Two-Sensor Industrial Analog Input Module
The AS1529-BTDR's 2-channel multiplexer is well-suited to industrial analog input modules reading a primary sensor (4-20 mA loop output or 0-10 V scaled signal) and a secondary reference (cold-junction compensation or supply monitoring). Its pseudo-differential input topology rejects ground bounce caused by switching loads sharing the same 24 V backplane. The 150 ksps throughput is more than adequate for process-control sampling below 10 kHz, while the SPI interface frees the host MCU's I2C bus for other housekeeping telemetry.
Recommandé
Medical Sensor Read-Out Board
In medical sensor read-out PCBs (such as pulse oximeter front-ends or patient-monitoring analog boards) the AS1529-BTDR provides 10-bit accuracy sufficient for first-stage conditioning of amplified bioelectric signals. The micro-power budget keeps heat dissipation low near skin-contact applications, while the SPI/MICROWIRE/QSPI-compatible interface is straightforward to integrate with low-power medical MCUs. Two channels let a board digitize both a primary vital-sign channel and a reference/diagnostic channel from one compact chip.
Recommandé
Process Control Analog Input Card
For process control cards the AS1529-BTDR accepts 0 V to VDD unipolar or pseudo-differential bipolar signals directly from op-amp conditioned 4-20 mA current-loop receivers. The 150 ksps sampling rate comfortably oversamples 4-20 mA loops and thermocouple/pt-RTD bridges without anti-aliasing complexity. Serial SPI output reduces the microcontroller's parallel-bus pin count and eases optical-isolation barriers in electrically noisy factory environments where ground separation matters.
Recommandé
Audio-Bandwidth Signal Acquisition
In audio-bandwidth signal acquisition modules (e.g. sub-50 kHz vibration, acoustic, or ultrasonic pre-process stages) the AS1529-BTDR provides 150 ksps single-shot sampling that comfortably oversamples the Nyquist boundary for 20 kHz audio. Per the manufacturer datasheet, the successive-approximation architecture yields one sample per conversion clock with no pipeline latency, which is critical when the digital host must react in real-time to acoustic or vibration events.

Notes de conception
Estimated: at VDD = 5.0 V, VREF tied to VDD, and 150 ksps throughput, the AS1529-BTDR typically dissipates about 1.0 mW (per the manufacturer datasheet micro-power headline). Place a 0.1 uF ceramic bypass within 1 cm of pin 8 (VDD) and a 10 uF bulk capacitor where power-trace inductance is significant. In battery applications, power down the ADC between conversions to drop quiescent current into the low-microamp range, then wake it via CS falling edge before each sample to extend battery runtime.
Per the manufacturer datasheet, the exposed thermal pad (EP) of the 8-TDFN EP package must be soldered to a continuous ground copper pour that spans at least the area of the package footprint. Use a star-ground topology where the analog GND pin (pin 3) and the EP pour join near the IC and only connect to the digital ground plane at one point. Keep the digital SCLK/DOUT/DIN traces short and routed away from the analog CH0/CH1 input traces to avoid digital switching noise coupling into the input signal.
Do not drive CS low before SCLK has stabilized (per manufacturer datasheet timing requirements), and ensure the input analog signal settles within the acquisition window before the next CS edge. Avoid using very long analog input traces; long traces inject clock-feedthrough noise. For pseudo-differential mode, keep the negative input within VDD + 0.3 V of the positive input per the absolute-maximum ratings, or use a true instrumentation front-end if larger common-mode ranges are required.
