ATMEGA88V-10AI Présentation

The Microchip (Atmel) ATMEGA88V-10AI is a low-power 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller with 8KB in-system programmable Flash, 1KB SRAM, 512B EEPROM, and a 10 MHz maximum clock frequency, housed in a 32-pin TQFP (7x7 mm) package rated for industrial temperatures of -40C to +85C.

An 8-bit AVR microcontroller is a Harvard-architecture processor that executes most instructions in a single clock cycle, delivering approximately 1 MIPS per MHz of throughput. Within the power-management hierarchy of embedded systems, the ATmega88 family sits in the mid-range tier of the AVR ATmega line, above the tinyAVR parts and below the ATmega328, and integrates CPU, program memory, data memory, timers, analog-to-digital conversion, and serial peripherals on a single silicon die.

Key features include 131 powerful instructions with mostly single-cycle execution, 23 general-purpose I/O lines, three flexible timer/counters with compare modes, a 10-bit 8-channel ADC, a byte-oriented Two-Wire Interface (I2C-compatible), a serial programmable USART, and an SPI interface. The picoPower-era low-power design supports 1.8V to 5.5V operation in the V-variant, enabling battery-powered designs.

Technically, the ATmega88V-10AI combines the AVR enhanced RISC core with 32 general-purpose working registers directly connected to the ALU, allowing two independent registers to be accessed in one instruction. The self-programming Flash supports boot-loader-based field updates, while debugWIRE provides on-chip debugging over a single pin via the standard AVR ISP/debugWIRE toolchain in Atmel Studio / Microchip Studio.

Typical applications include industrial sensor nodes, battery-powered metering, motor control with PWM timers, consumer appliance control panels, and low-cost data loggers. The wide 1.8V to 5.5V supply range directly fits two-cell battery stacks and 3.3V or 5V logic systems.

Design consideration: the V speed grade limits maximum clock to 10 MHz across the full voltage range; if 20 MHz operation is required, choose the ATmega88-20AI speed grade instead, which shares the same TQFP-32 footprint.

Applications typiques

ATMEGA88V-10AI convient pour 6 applications: Industrial Sensor Nodes, Battery-Powered Metering, Motor Control and PWM Actuation, Consumer Appliance Control Panels, Low-Cost Data Loggers, Embedded Prototyping and Education.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Nodes

The ATMEGA88V-10AI fits industrial sensor nodes because its 1.8V to 5.5V supply range tolerates noisy or sagging industrial power rails, while the -40C to +85C industrial temperature grade survives harsh enclosures. The 10-bit 8-channel ADC digitizes thermistors, bridge sensors, and 4-20 mA derived signals directly, and the TWI and SPI interfaces connect external precision converters or EEPROM. Its 10 MHz clock provides roughly 10 MIPS, sufficient for filtering and protocol handling on 23 I/O lines. Power-down mode plus watchdog wake-up enables battery-backed nodes that sleep for months between transmissions, trading clock speed for standby current in a compact 7x7 mm TQFP-32 footprint.

⚡

Battery-Powered Metering

For battery-powered energy and water meters, the ATMEGA88V-10AI operates directly from two alkaline cells across their entire discharge curve down to 1.8V, eliminating a boost converter. The AVR power-management suite (idle, ADC noise reduction, power-save, power-down) lets firmware drop into microamp-level sleep between measurement interrupts, with Timer/Counter2 running asynchronously on a 32.768 kHz watch crystal in power-save mode to keep an RTC. The 10-bit ADC with internal 1.1V reference measures battery voltage and load current via shunt sensing. At a 10 MHz maximum clock, burst processing after wake-up completes tariff calculations quickly, maximizing sleep duty cycle and battery life.

⚙️

Motor Control and PWM Actuation

The ATMEGA88V-10AI drives small DC motors, fans, and actuators using its hardware PWM channels: two 8-bit timers and one 16-bit timer provide multiple independent PWM outputs with compare modes, so firmware sets duty cycle with zero CPU overhead. The 16-bit timer also supports input capture for tachometer feedback and RPM measurement. Dead-time insertion for half-bridge H-bridge drivers must be handled in software, which the 10 MIPS core budget easily covers at PWM frequencies up to tens of kilohertz. Its 23 I/O lines manage direction, enable, and fault inputs, and the industrial temperature rating suits fan controllers inside sealed equipment where 5V logic dominates.

📺

Consumer Appliance Control Panels

Appliance control panels benefit from the ATMEGA88V-10AI's combination of cost efficiency, 5V-tolerant wide-voltage operation, and enough I/O for keys, LEDs, and display segments. The 23 GPIO lines drive a 7-segment or small character LCD matrix via multiplexing in software, while Timer/Counter2 PWM provides buzzer tones and backlight dimming. Twi (TWI) interfaces external IO expanders when the design grows, and the USART links to higher-level main boards over UART. Because the 10 MHz V-grade is fully sufficient for human-interface timing, designers save cost versus 20 MHz parts while retaining the identical footprint, allowing future drop-in upgrades to ATMEGA88PA or PB silicon without PCB respin.

🧩

Low-Cost Data Loggers

The ATMEGA88V-10AI serves low-cost data loggers by pairing its 10-bit ADC with an SPI or I2C flash/EEPROM memory chip, recording sensor samples at programmable intervals. Self-programming Flash (8KB) can also hold a boot loader so log formats update in the field through a UART connection. The device sleeps in power-down between timed interrupts from Timer/Counter2 on a 32 kHz crystal, waking to burst-sample sensors and append records, which keeps average current in the microamp range. The wide 1.8V to 5.5V range tolerates a fading lithium primary cell, and debugWIRE gives engineers single-pin in-circuit debugging during logger firmware development.

🔧

Embedded Prototyping and Education

The ATMEGA88V-10AI is a mainstay of embedded prototyping and teaching because the AVR architecture is documented in depth, toolchains are free (AVR-GCC, Microchip Studio), and Arduino-compatible bootloaders run on 8KB parts. The 32-TQFP (7x7 mm) package is hand-solderable with a fine iron or hot air, and the same footprint as faster ATmega88 grades lets students upgrade clock speed later without redesign. debugWIRE over the RESET pin removes the need for a separate JTAG probe, lowering tooling cost. Its 10 MIPS at 10 MHz comfortably demonstrates interrupts, PWM, ADC sampling, UART, SPI, and I2C protocols in classroom laboratories and hobby projects.

What is the operating voltage range of ATMEGA88V-10AI?
The ATMEGA88V-10AI operates from 1.8V to 5.5V across its full industrial temperature range of -40C to +85C. The V suffix denotes the low-voltage speed grade, which supports a maximum clock frequency of 10 MHz at any supply voltage within this range. According to the Microchip ATmega88 datasheet, this wide voltage window makes the device suitable for direct battery operation, including two alkaline cells down to end-of-life voltage.
What is the maximum clock frequency of ATMEGA88V-10AI?
The maximum clock frequency of the ATMEGA88V-10AI is 10 MHz, which delivers up to 10 MIPS throughput given the AVR core's approximately 1 MIPS per MHz single-cycle instruction execution. This 10 MHz limit is inherent to the V speed grade; the ATmega88-20AI variant in the same 32-TQFP package raises the limit to 20 MHz if you later need more processing headroom without changing the PCB footprint.
What are the key specifications of ATMEGA88V-10AI that engineers should know?
The ATMEGA88V-10AI is an 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller with 8KB ISP Flash, 1KB SRAM, 512B EEPROM, 23 I/O lines, a 10-bit 8-channel ADC, three timers (2x 8-bit, 1x 16-bit), USART, SPI, and TWI interfaces, and debugWIRE on-chip debugging. It runs at up to 10 MHz from 1.8V to 5.5V, in a 32-TQFP (7x7 mm) package rated -40C to +85C. These figures come from the Microchip ATmega88 family datasheet.

Guide de sélection

Choose the ATMEGA88V-10AI when your board is already laid out for the original ATmega88 die, your clock requirement is 10 MHz or below, and the supply can fall to 1.8V from battery discharge - it is the most cost-effective original-die part in the 32-TQFP industrial temperature family. Choose ATMEGA88-20AI or ATMEGA88A-AU if you need 20 MHz headroom on the same footprint. Choose ATMEGA88PA-AUR or ATMEGA88PA-ANR for new battery designs where picoPower sleep current is decisive. Choose ATMEGA88PB-ANR when you need a second USART, extra PWM channels, or QTouch peripheral support while keeping pin compatibility. All these parts share the identical 32-TQFP (7x7 mm) footprint and 8KB Flash memory map, so migration between them requires no PCB respin, only firmware re-verification against the newer datasheet electrical tables. For brand-new designs not constrained by footprint, also evaluate the higher-memory ATmega328P before committing.

Notes de conception

Decouple both VCC pins (pins 4 and 6) and AVCC (pin 18) with 100 nF ceramic capacitors placed within 5 mm of each pin, plus one bulk 10 uF capacitor per supply rail. Tie AVCC to VCC through a low-pass filter (10 uH inductor or ferrite bead plus 100 nF) when using the ADC with a noisy digital supply. If AREF is driven externally, never exceed AVCC; if using the internal reference, connect a 100 nF capacitor from AREF (pin 20) to ground for stability per the Microchip datasheet supply section.

On the 32-TQFP (7x7 mm) footprint, keep the crystal (if used on PB6/PB7) within 10 mm of the chip with 20 pF load capacitors referenced to a short ground return. Reserve footprint compatibility with ATMEGA88PA/PB by leaving the RESET pin (PC6, pin 29) accessible to a 100 nF pull-down test point for debugWIRE recovery, since debugWIRE locks out external reset. Use 10 kohm pull-up on RESET for ISP programming compatibility with standard AVR ISP tools.

The V speed grade caps clock frequency at 10 MHz over the full 1.8V to 5.5V range - do not overclock from the same fuse settings used on ATmega88-20 boards, as CKDIV8 and CKOUT fuses interact with the calibrated RC oscillator. Enabling debugWIRE (DWEN fuse) disables external RESET; recovery requires the debugWIRE-enabled programmer to disable it. Also note that flash write endurance is 10,000 cycles - avoid data-logging into program Flash; use the 512B EEPROM (100,000 cycles) or external memory instead.
