ATSAMC20E17A-MNT Présentation
A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, program memory (Flash), working memory (SRAM), and a rich set of peripherals such as timers, communication interfaces, ADCs, and GPIO. The Cortex-M0+ is ARM's smallest and most energy-efficient application processor core, optimized for deterministic embedded control. The SAM C20 family sits within Microchip's broader hierarchy: microcontroller -> 32-bit MCU -> ARM Cortex-M0+ family -> SAM C2x industrial line -> 5V CAN-FD enabled sub-family.
Key features include a single-cycle hardware multiplier, a Micro Trace Buffer, a Memory Protection Unit (MPU), 4 KB of independent self-programmable Flash for EEPROM emulation, and CAN-FD support. The device operates from 2.7V to 5.5V, supports up to 6 SERCOM (serial communication) interfaces, and integrates a 12-bit ADC, multiple 16-bit timers, and a PTC (Peripheral Touch Controller) for capacitive sensing.
The ATSAMC20E17A-MNT uses a 5V-tolerant CMOS process with on-chip voltage regulation, allowing direct interfacing with 5V logic without level shifters. Its CAN-FD peripheral supports data rates up to 8 Mbps for automotive and industrial networking. The integrated PTC enables robust capacitive touch button, slider, and proximity sensing without external components.
Typical applications include industrial CAN-FD nodes, automotive body and chassis ECUs, motor control BLDC drivers, smart energy metering, building automation, capacitive touch human-machine interfaces, and portable medical devices. The wide 5V supply range and robust ESD/EMC performance suit harsh industrial environments.
When designing with this part, allocate the 4 KB EEPROM-emulation Flash to maximize endurance and decouple VDD with a 100 nF ceramic capacitor placed within 5 mm of each supply pin. For CAN-FD networks, terminate the bus with 120 ohm resistors at each end and ensure the CAN peripheral is supplied from a clean 5V rail to meet EMC requirements.

For sensorless or Hall-sensor BLDC motor control, the ATSAMC20E17A-MNT provides 16-bit TCC timers for PWM generation, 12-bit ADC for back-EMF sensing, and CAN-FD for network communication. The 48 MHz Cortex-M0+ executes FOC algorithms at sufficient bandwidth for sub-1 kW motors. The PTC can also serve as a contactless user interface.
Recommandé
Smart Energy Meters
Single-phase smart energy meters benefit from the ATSAMC20E17A-MNT's 5V ADC range, which directly digitizes current shunt and voltage divider signals without pre-amplification. The 128 KB Flash stores metering firmware, calibration constants, and DLMS/COSEM communication stacks; 16 KB SRAM buffers metrology calculations. CAN-FD or SERCOM interfaces enable AMI/AMR network connectivity.
Recommandé
Building Automation Controllers
HVAC controllers, BACnet/Modbus nodes, and lighting controllers can use the ATSAMC20E17A-MNT to consolidate multiple serial interfaces (up to 6 SERCOM modules) for sensors, actuators, and upstream networks. The 5V tolerance interfaces with legacy 24V industrial sensors through external dividers. The 128 KB Flash supports full BACnet MS/TP or Modbus RTU stacks plus application logic.
Recommandé
Portable Medical Devices
Battery-powered medical devices such as infusion pumps, glucose meters, and pulse oximeters use the ATSAMC20E17A-MNT for its low-power Cortex-M0+ core and 5V-tolerant ADC. The 128 KB Flash stores calibration data and safety stack firmware; 16 KB SRAM buffers sample data. PTC enables touch-based user interfaces without mechanical buttons, improving ingress protection.

Notes de conception
Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of each VDD pin and a single bulk 10 uF capacitor near the supply rail entry point. For CAN-FD applications, isolate the CAN transceiver supply (typically 5V) with a ferrite bead from the MCU digital supply to prevent bus transients from coupling into the MCU core.
The 32-pin VQFN (5x5 mm) package has an exposed thermal pad (EP) that MUST be soldered to a PCB thermal pad with at least 8 thermal vias to the internal ground plane for proper heat dissipation and electrical grounding. Missing or insufficient vias to the EP pin can cause erratic behavior and exceed junction temperature limits at high CPU activity.
The 4 KB EEPROM-emulation Flash region requires wear-leveling firmware to achieve >100k write cycles. Directly writing to flash without the Atmel/Microchip EEPROM emulation library will exhaust the region in minutes. Use the NVMCTRL (Non-Volatile Memory Controller) write-once pattern with the Atmel Start EEPROM emulation driver.
For CAN-FD bus speeds above 2 Mbps, use a twisted-pair cable with 120 ohm termination at each end. The CAN RX/TX pins (PA10/PA11 in this VQFN layout) should be routed as a differential pair with 100 ohm differential impedance and kept under 100 mm to minimize reflections.
Keep the SWD programming traces (SWDIO on PA20, SWCLK on PA21) under 50 mm and avoid routing them near high-current switching nodes. Add 10 kohm pull-up on SWDIO and 10 kohm pull-down on SWCLK for reliable debugger connection during production programming.
