ATSAME70J19B-ANT Présentation

The Microchip Technology ATSAME70J19B-ANT is a high-performance 32-bit ARM Cortex-M7 microcontroller with Floating Point Unit (FPU), delivering up to 300 MHz core speed, 512 KB of Flash, and up to 256 KB of multi-port SRAM in a 64-pin LQFP (10x10 mm) package. It belongs to the SAM E70/S70/V70/V71 family and is tailored for industrial control, IoT gateways, and connected automotive body/comfort applications requiring deterministic real-time response.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, program and data memory, and a rich set of on-chip peripherals (ADC, timers, communication interfaces). The Cortex-M7 core specifically adds a double-precision FPU, DSP extensions, and an instruction/data cache, placing it at the top of the Cortex-M performance hierarchy (Cortex-M7 > Cortex-M4 > Cortex-M3 > Cortex-M0+). Within Microchip's portfolio, the SAM E70 sits in the high-performance MCU tier, between the lower-cost SAMD5x Cortex-M4 family and the Cortex-M7-based SAME70/SAMS70/SAMV71 series.

Key features include IEEE 754 single/double-precision floating-point arithmetic, 16 KB instruction cache plus 16 KB data cache, Tightly Coupled Memory (TCM) interfaces, embedded Trace Macrocell (ETM) for instruction trace, and a 1 MSPS 12-bit ADC. Peripherals span Ethernet MAC, CAN-FD, USB 2.0 High-Speed with on-chip PHY, three CAN-FD controllers, multiple USART/UART/SPI/TWI interfaces, an external bus interface (EBI) for SRAM/SDRAM expansion, and a camera interface. An integrated cryptographic accelerator and True Random Number Generator (TRNG) support secure boot and TLS applications.

The SAM E70 architecture uses a 6-layer AHB/AXI bus matrix to keep CPU, DMA, Ethernet, and display streams concurrent without bus starvation. The 300 MHz Cortex-M7 delivers 1500 CoreMark / 600 DMIPS, roughly 2x the performance of a Cortex-M4 at the same frequency. Hardware DSP and SIMD instructions accelerate audio codecs and motor-control loops, while the FPU removes the need for software floating-point emulation in PLC and instrumentation code.

Typical applications include industrial Ethernet slaves (EtherCAT, PROFINET, EtherNet/IP), building-automation controllers, audio processing and USB audio interfaces, automotive body and infotainment modules, IoT gateways with TLS offload, motor-control FOC inverters, and graphical HMI with TFT LCD. The wide 1.62V-3.6V I/O supply with internal LDO simplifies mixed-voltage designs.

When designing with this device, allocate a 4-layer PCB with the EBI bus carefully length-matched if SDRAM is used, and ensure the 12 MHz crystal load capacitance matches the crystal datasheet (typically 12-20 pF). Use the ASF4 / MPLAB Harmony 3 framework for peripheral drivers; bare-metal register-level coding is feasible but reduces portability across the SAM E70/S70/V70/V71 family. The crypto accelerator requires a firmware library; verify license terms if distributing binary firmware.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives, and practical design notes not found in the standalone Microchip datasheet, giving engineers a single reference for sourcing and second-source planning.

Applications typiques

ATSAME70J19B-ANT convient pour 6 applications: Industrial Ethernet Slave (EtherCAT / PROFINET / EtherNet/IP), USB Audio Interface / Hi-Fi DAC, IoT Gateway with TLS Offload, Automotive Body Control / Gateway Module, Motor Control / FOC Inverter, Graphical HMI with TFT LCD.

🏭

Industrial Ethernet Slave (EtherCAT / PROFINET / EtherNet/IP)

The ATSAME70J19B-ANT is a strong fit for industrial Ethernet slave controllers because of its on-chip 10/100 Ethernet MAC with IEEE 1588 hardware timestamping and 300 MHz Cortex-M7 core. Running a real-time fieldbus stack like SOEM (EtherCAT) or the Microchip PROFINET device library consumes roughly 40-50% CPU, leaving ample headroom for application logic. The 512 KB Flash holds a full TCP/IP stack plus fieldbus slave firmware, while 256 KB SRAM accommodates Ethernet buffers and protocol state without external memory. The wide 1.62-3.6 V supply range tolerates the noisy 24V industrial backplane after buck regulation.

🎧

USB Audio Interface / Hi-Fi DAC

For USB audio DAC and ADC interfaces, the ATSAME70J19B-ANT's USB 2.0 High-Speed with on-chip PHY provides reliable isochronous audio streaming at 24-bit/192 kHz without external components. The Cortex-M7 DSP extensions enable real-time EQ, crossover, and dynamics processing in firmware, while the FPU handles biquad calculations without CPU saturation. With USB HS bandwidth of 480 Mbit/s, multichannel audio plus HID control messages fit comfortably on one bus. The LQFP-64 package provides enough GPIO for rotary encoder, button matrix, and OLED display support typical in consumer audio products.

🧩

IoT Gateway with TLS Offload

The ATSAME70J19B-ANT is well-suited for industrial IoT gateways running MQTT, CoAP, or HTTP/TLS to cloud brokers. Its hardware AES and TRNG accelerator reduce TLS 1.2/1.3 handshake latency by 30-40% compared to software-only implementations, while the 256 KB SRAM holds TLS session keys and buffers. The 300 MHz core can run lwIP plus mbedTLS with a sustained throughput of 15-20 Mbit/s on TLS. With Ethernet, USB, and multiple UART/SPI/I2C peripherals, it can aggregate sensor data from RS-485 Modbus, SPI sensors, and CAN-FD devices into a single TLS-secured uplink.

🚗

Automotive Body Control / Gateway Module

In automotive body controllers and central gateway modules, the ATSAME70J19B-ANT's three CAN-FD controllers aggregate multiple vehicle buses while the Ethernet MAC bridges to the in-vehicle backbone. The Cortex-M7 executes AUTOSAR-class BSW with deterministic latency, and the 1 MSPS ADC samples analog body-comfort sensors (rain, light, temperature) without external analog front end. Operating temperature range of -40 C to +105 C meets AEC-Q100 Grade 2 expectations for cabin-mounted modules. Note that AEC-Q100 qualified variants should be selected for safety-relevant ECUs rather than the industrial-grade SAM E70.

🏭

Motor Control / FOC Inverter

Field-oriented control (FOC) of three-phase PMSM and BLDC motors runs efficiently on the ATSAME70J19B-ANT at update rates up to 30 kHz with full PID and Park/Clarke transforms in hardware FPU. The high-resolution PWM timers (16-bit with 5-bit prescaler) achieve switching frequencies above 100 kHz for high-speed spindles. The 1 MSPS ADC synchronizes current sampling with PWM edges, eliminating software jitter. The Cortex-M7 DSP extensions handle SVPWM and dead-time compensation in single-cycle instructions. The LQFP-64 provides ample GPIO for inverter gate-driver interfaces and encoder/Resolver feedback.

📺

Graphical HMI with TFT LCD

The ATSAME70J19B-ANT can drive small TFT LCD displays (up to 480x272) via the integrated external bus interface (EBI) with 8080/6800 parallel interface plus DMA2D-like peripheral for line-by-line transfers. The Cortex-M7's 16 KB I-cache reduces the penalty of repeated framebuffer fetches, while the LQFP-64's 50+ GPIO pins support resistive touch controllers, button matrices, and backlight PWM. With LVGL or emWin libraries, typical HMI screens refresh at 30-60 Hz without external SDRAM. The crypto accelerator enables secure UI for industrial equipment requiring password-protected configuration.

Notes de conception

The 64-LQFP at 0.5 mm pitch requires 4 mil traces and 4 mil spaces for fan-out, plus 8 mil pad-to-pad spacing. Use a 4-layer PCB with continuous ground plane under the device and a 0.1 uF decoupling capacitor within 3 mm of every VDDIO pin and one 10 uF bulk capacitor near the VDDCORE pin. The crystal traces to the 12 MHz main oscillator must be kept short (less than 10 mm) and routed with ground guard traces to minimize EMI susceptibility.

If using the External Bus Interface (EBI) with SDRAM, length-match the data, address, and control signals within +/- 0.5 mm and place a 22 ohm series damping resistor at the MCU output. Route USB DP/DM as a 90 ohm differential pair on the top layer with no splits in the reference ground plane. Place the Ethernet MII/RMII traces adjacent to the MCU and away from switching power inductors to avoid coupling noise into the PHY MDI lines.

Do not enable the brown-out detector at 1.62 V if your application uses a 1.8 V supply that briefly drops during ADC startup, as this will cause unexpected resets. Ensure the NRST line has a 10 kohm pull-up and a 100 nF capacitor to ground for clean power-on reset behavior. When programming via SWD, dedicate PA4 (TDI) and PA5 (TDO) to debug use and avoid remapping them to other functions, otherwise JTAG boundary scan will be inaccessible. The crypto accelerator requires firmware library initialization; without calling the AFEC init, AES/TDES operations return zeros silently.

Estimated: at 300 MHz full load with all peripherals active, core current consumption is approximately 100 mA, resulting in 0.36 W dissipation at 3.3 V. With the LQFP-64 thermal resistance theta_JA around 50 C/W, the junction temperature rise above ambient is approximately 18 C - well within the 105 C industrial limit. No external heatsink is required, but adequate airflow is recommended in enclosed industrial cabinets where ambient can approach 70 C.
