ATSAML10E15A-AF Présentation
A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, memory (Flash for program code and SRAM for runtime data), peripherals, and I/O. ARM Cortex-M23 cores target ultra-low-power embedded applications with the Armv8-M Baseline architecture, supporting only the Thumb-2 instruction set. The ATSAML10E15A-AF sits in the hierarchy: ARM Cortex-M23 -> Cortex-M family -> ARMv8-M -> 32-bit MCU -> microcontroller -> semiconductor -> integrated circuit.
Key features include a built-in Peripheral Touch Controller (PTC) supporting capacitive touch buttons, sliders, and proximity sensing without external components. It integrates advanced analog peripherals (12-bit ADC, 10-bit DAC, comparators), an ISO7816 smart-card interface, an event system for CPU-independent peripheral-to-peripheral signaling, and multiple serial interfaces (SERCOM configurable as UART/SPI/I2C). The wide 1.62V to 3.63V operating range and brown-out detection enable robust operation from coin-cell or 3.3V regulated supplies.
Internally, the ATSAML10E15A-AF uses a 32MHz Cortex-M23 core with single-cycle multiplier, hardware divide, and a Nested Vectored Interrupt Controller (NVIC). The on-chip voltage regulator with power-gating domains and SleepWalking peripherals lets selected peripherals wake the CPU only on actual events, holding overall system current near standby levels. The device ships with a factory-trimmed internal 32kHz oscillator and supports an external crystal up to 32MHz.
Typical applications include IoT sensor nodes, wearable fitness bands, smart remote controls, capacitive-touch user interfaces, smart-card and RFID readers (ISO7816), medical point-of-care devices, and industrial HMI panels where battery life and touch input are both critical.
When designing with this MCU, plan your pin-out carefully: 32-pin TQFP exposes only a subset of the SERCOM and PTC channels, so touch sensors and serial buses may share physical pins. Always consult the SAM L10/L11 family datasheet for peripheral multiplexing before committing the PCB layout.

Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Nodes
The ATSAML10E15A-AF is purpose-built for IoT sensor nodes that must run for years on a coin-cell or 2xAA battery. Its <25 uA/MHz active current and <100 nA Sleep current let duty-cycled sensor firmware run at sub-100 uA average draw. The integrated 12-bit ADC reads temperature, humidity, or gas sensors directly, while SERCOM channels drive SPI/I2C sensors without external glue logic. The wide 1.62V-3.63V supply range accepts depleted-battery operation down to 1.8V with full Flash retention.
Recommandé
Capacitive-Touch User Interfaces
The on-chip Peripheral Touch Controller (PTC) turns the ATSAML10E15A-AF into a complete capacitive-touch platform supporting self-cap and mutual-cap buttons, sliders, wheels, and proximity sensing. The PTC scans in hardware, offloading the Cortex-M23 core, and supports wake-on-touch from <100 nA Sleep. This suits appliance control panels, smart locks, and wearable UIs where mechanical buttons are undesirable. Combined with 32 KB Flash the device hosts Microchip's QTouch library for advanced gestures.
Recommandé
Wearable Fitness and Health Bands
Wearables need the smallest possible BOM with reliable low-power operation. The ATSAML10E15A-AF integrates ADC, DAC, comparators, PTC for tap/wake gestures, and multiple SERCOM channels in one 7x7 mm TQFP, replacing several discrete chips. Its 32 KB Flash fits BLE stack libraries (when paired with an external radio) and step-counter firmware. At <100 nA Sleep with periodic accelerometer polling, a 100 mAh Li-Po battery supports 30+ days of standby operation.
Recommandé
Smart-Card and RFID Readers (ISO7816)
The ATSAML10E15A-AF integrates an ISO7816 smart-card interface on-chip, eliminating the external smart-card controller IC and reducing BOM cost and PCB area. Combined with its Cortex-M23 crypto-friendly instruction set, the part handles secure element communication for payment terminals, e-identification readers, and SIM-based IoT modules. The 8 KB SRAM is sufficient for command buffering, and 32 KB Flash hosts the application-level card-processing stack.
Recommandé
Industrial HMI and Control Panels
With -40C to +125C operating range and the SAM L10 family's reputation for industrial robustness, the ATSAML10E15A-AF fits indoor/outdoor HMI panels, building-automation keypads, and equipment controllers. The PTC handles gloved-touch sensing in industrial environments, and the 12-bit ADC reads 4-20 mA loop sensors with external shunt. SERCOM channels connect to UART/SPI displays or to industrial bus bridges. The TQFP-32 footprint is easy to hand-rework during prototyping.
Recommandé
Smart Remote Controls
Voice and gesture remotes for TVs and smart speakers benefit from the ATSAML10E15A-AF's <100 nA Sleep with instant wake on PTC touch or button interrupt. The 32 MHz Cortex-M23 core decodes IR or BLE remote protocols, and SERCOM channels connect to MEMS microphones or IR LEDs. The wide 1.62V-3.63V supply range works directly from 2xAAA alkaline batteries, removing the need for a separate LDO.
Recommandé
Medical Point-of-Care Devices
Portable medical devices (glucometers, pulse oximeters) rely on the ATSAML10E15A-AF's low active current for longer battery life between recharges. The 12-bit ADC reads pulse-oximetry or glucose-strip analog front-ends, and the DAC generates stimulus waveforms. The integrated ISO7816 interface can read patient smart-cards in clinical environments. Microchip's IEC 60730 Class B safety library is supported on this MCU, simplifying medical-device compliance.

Notes de conception
Estimated: the SAM L10 active current scales with CPU clock at <25 uA/MHz (per Microchip datasheet). At 32 MHz the active draw is roughly 800 uA, while Sleep with full SRAM retention stays under 100 nA. For a duty-cycled sensor node waking every 1 s for 5 ms, average current is approximately 5 uA, enabling multi-year CR2032 battery life. Decouple VDD with a 100-nF X7R ceramic placed within 3 mm of each VDD pin and a 4.7-uF bulk capacitor on the supply rail.
Route the SWDIO and SWCLK signals away from high-current switching traces and keep them under 50 mm to avoid debug-session lockups. Place the 32.768 kHz crystal within 5 mm of the XIN/XOUT pins with a grounded guard ring to suppress noise coupling into the low-power oscillator. The PTC lines should be guarded by a ground pour to prevent false-touch events from capacitive crosstalk.
Do not exceed 3.63 V on any VDD pin: the on-chip LDO has no over-voltage protection, and absolute-maximum stress will degrade Flash retention. Always read the silicon errata document for the actual ATSAML10E15A-AF revision before release - early silicon revs had ADC offset issues corrected in later masks. When migrating to the ATSAML11E15A-AF, the TrustZone boot sequence requires linker-script updates not present in SAM L10 projects.
SERCOM peripheral pins multiplex with PTC and analog functions; re-assigning a pin after PCB layout is impossible. Lock the pin multiplexer in the SAM L10 header file early in firmware development. For I2C buses above 400 kHz, add 4.7 kohm pull-ups to VDD and verify signal integrity with an oscilloscope on both SDA and SCL rise times, because internal pull-ups are too weak for Fast-Mode Plus.
