BRT23-F Présentation
A phototriac optocoupler (also called a triac-output optoisolator) is a galvanically isolated solid-state relay that uses an internal infrared LED to fire an integrated triac on the AC secondary side. It sits in the hierarchy: optocoupler > phototriac > solid-state relay > power semiconductor. The zero-crossing detector ensures the output triac only triggers when the AC line voltage is within a few volts of zero, eliminating the inrush current and RFI that random-fire optotriacs inject into resistive loads at switch-on.
Key specifications of the BRT23-F include a maximum LED trigger current IFT of 5 mA (typically 1.2 mA), repetitive peak off-state voltage VDRM of 800 V, RMS on-state current IT(RMS) up to 100 mA, and an isolation voltage VISO of 5300 Vrms. The integrated zero-crossing detector suppresses dv/dt triggering up to 10 kV/µs minimum, far above what a discrete optotriac can withstand on a noisy 240 VAC line. The DIP-6 footprint occupies 7.62 mm x 6.86 mm of PCB area.
Internally the device uses Vishay's monolithic BRT duals-gate thyristor process, which integrates the zero-cross comparator, photo-sense amplifier and main triac on a single dielectrically isolated die. This monolithic approach is more reliable and EMI-immune than the legacy discrete-transistor zero-cross designs found in older MOC30xx equivalents.
Typical applications include solid-state relay front ends, microcontroller interfaces to 24-380 VAC loads, programmable logic controller (PLC) outputs, motor control logic isolation, solenoid drivers and AC power-line switching for industrial controls. The zero-cross feature makes it especially well suited to resistive loads such as heater elements and incandescent lamps, where inrush at random phase angles would otherwise drastically shorten filament life.
When designing with this part, place a 100 Ω to 330 Ω resistor in series with the input LED to limit continuous current, and add a snubber (typically 100 Ω + 0.01 µF) across the output triac when driving inductive loads. The input LED reverse voltage rating of 6 V must be respected by the driving GPIO.

Applications typiques
BRT23-F convient pour 6 applications: Solid-State Relay (SSR) Front End for 240 VAC Mains, PLC Digital Output Module Isolation, Microcontroller Interface to 380 VAC Three-Phase Lines, AC Solenoid and Contactor Driver, Smart Home and IoT AC Load Control, Medical and Laboratory Equipment AC Switching.
Solid-State Relay (SSR) Front End for 240 VAC Mains
The BRT23-F's 800 V VDRM rating comfortably exceeds the peak voltage of 240 VAC mains (340 V peak), while its 5300 Vrms isolation and integrated zero-cross detector make it the textbook SSR front end for HVAC, industrial heater and appliance control. In a typical 25 A SSR the BRT23-F drives a back-to-back SCR power stage, with the zero-cross feature eliminating inrush on cold resistive loads like quartz lamps and heating elements that would otherwise weld relay contacts. The 1.2 mA typical IFT allows direct drive from a 3.3 V microcontroller GPIO through a 680 Ω current-limit resistor, removing any buffer transistor. Compared to a random-fire MOC3021, the BRT23-F reduces conducted EMI by 20-30 dB at switch-on, easing compliance with EN 55015 for lighting products.
Recommandé
PLC Digital Output Module Isolation
Programmable Logic Controllers require reinforced-insulation isolation between the 24 V logic backplane and 120/240 VAC field-side switching. The BRT23-F provides 5300 Vrms isolation in a 6-DIP footprint, which satisfies IEC 61131-2 and UL 508 standards for industrial control. Its integrated zero-cross detection eliminates the need for firmware phase-angle management in the PLC CPU, reducing scan-time burden. A typical 8-channel PLC output module places one BRT23-F per channel followed by an external triac such as the BTA16, switching up to 16 A per point. The 1.2 mA IFT is also compatible with the 5 V logic levels of legacy PLC output ASICs, while the 100 mA IT(RMS) is sufficient to drive most industrial-grade triac gates.

Microcontroller Interface to 380 VAC Three-Phase Lines
Industrial three-phase 380 VAC line-to-line applications demand an optocoupler with VDRM ratings well above the 537 V peak of 380 VAC mains. The BRT23-F's 800 V VDRM provides a 1.5x safety margin that withstands transient overvoltages from inductive loads and motor back-EMF without false triggering. The integrated dv/dt rating of 10 kV/µs minimum reliably rejects the fast transients common on industrial motor busbars. In a typical motor enable circuit a single BRT23-F drives the gate of a BTA41 triac, controlled directly by an STM32 or PIC18 GPIO pin through a 680 Ω current-limit resistor. The 5300 Vrms isolation also protects the microcontroller from catastrophic phase-to-ground faults that would otherwise destroy the entire control board.
Recommandé
AC Solenoid and Contactor Driver
AC solenoids, contactors and valves draw 5-10x inrush current at random phase angles, which dramatically shortens relay contact life when switched by electromechanical means. The BRT23-F's zero-cross trigger guarantees that the external triac only closes the AC circuit when the line voltage is within ±20 V of zero, eliminating inrush and giving 10x longer solenoid life. The 100 mA IT(RMS) output can directly drive most industrial solenoid gate stages or the BTA08/BTA12 triac family. The 800 V VDRM is sufficient for 240 VAC solenoids commonly found in HVAC and process-control plants, and the 5300 Vrms isolation protects 24 V PLC logic from coil back-EMF.

Smart Home and IoT AC Load Control
Wi-Fi and Zigbee smart switches, dimmers and appliance controls require a compact, low-power optocoupler to isolate the 3.3 V radio module from the 120/240 VAC load. The BRT23-F's 1.2 mA typical IFT enables direct drive from ESP32, nRF52840 or Zigbee SoC GPIO pins, eliminating a discrete buffer transistor and saving BOM cost. Its integrated zero-cross detection is ideal for resistive loads like space heaters and incandescent-style filament lamps where random-phase firing would drastically shorten bulb life. The 5300 Vrms isolation also meets IEC 60335 reinforced-insulation requirements for household appliance controls, and the 6-DIP package fits within the typical 25 mm x 25 mm PCB outline of a wall-switch form factor.
Recommandé
Medical and Laboratory Equipment AC Switching
Medical devices such as laboratory incubators, sterilizers and patient-warming blankets require reliable AC load switching with reinforced isolation between patient-applied circuits and mains. The BRT23-F's 5300 Vrms isolation voltage, when combined with appropriate PCB creepage distances (typically 8 mm minimum), satisfies IEC 60601-1 reinforced-insulation requirements for 240 VAC medical equipment. The zero-cross feature is also critical in sterilizer heater control where inrush would damage delicate heating elements and skew temperature setpoint accuracy. The monolithic BRT process provides lower EMI than discrete optotriac designs, helping medical equipment meet IEC 60601-1-2 EMC requirements without extensive filtering.

- High 10 kV/µs dv/dt immunity (vs PC3SD11NTZ)
Notes de conception
Estimated: at I_F = 10 mA, the input LED dissipates V_F * I_F = 1.2 V * 10 mA = 12 mW of heat - negligible. Drive the LED with a current-limit resistor sized as R = (V_GPIO - V_F) / I_F. For a 3.3 V GPIO driving 10 mA, R = (3.3 - 1.2) / 0.01 = 210 Ω (use 220 Ω standard). For a 5 V GPIO driving 10 mA, R = 380 Ω (use 390 Ω standard). Never exceed the 6 V reverse-voltage rating on the LED - add a 1N4148 in anti-parallel if the driving GPIO can swing below -0.7 V.
The BRT23-F is a zero-cross optotriac and MUST NOT be used for phase-angle dimming. Random-phase firing at AC peak voltages causes 10-20x inrush current on cold filaments, dramatically shortening bulb life, and the zero-cross detector will skip dimming angles entirely. For incandescent lamp dimming or universal motor speed control use a random-fire optotriac such as the MOC3021 instead. Also, the 100 mA IT(RMS) rating is for the internal triac only - it cannot drive a 10 A load directly and must be followed by an external triac power stage such as the BTA16-600BW.
Maintain at least 8 mm of creepage distance between the input-side (pins 1-3) and output-side (pins 4-6) copper traces to preserve the 5300 Vrms isolation rating. Remove all solder mask and copper under the optocoupler body to maximize isolation, and avoid running low-voltage logic traces under the package. For through-hole designs use a DIP socket only when serviceability outweighs the additional 2-3 pF of capacitive coupling that sockets introduce - direct soldering is preferred for medical and high-voltage industrial designs.
The BRT23-F has a typical thermal resistance θJA of 100 °C/W in still air, so dissipating the full 100 mA at 800 V blocking is not possible - the output triac would dissipate too much conduction loss. In typical SSR applications the BRT23-F only carries gate current to an external power triac, keeping internal dissipation below 50 mW. If using the BRT23-F as the sole switching element, derate IT(RMS) to 50 mA at 85 °C ambient to keep junction temperature below 100 °C (estimated from R_θJA = 100 °C/W and 50 mW loss).
