HI3-574AJN-5 Présentation

The Renesas (formerly Intersil) HI3-574AJN-5 is a complete 12-bit successive-approximation analog-to-digital converter (SAR ADC) with a 40 kSPS sampling rate, integrated +10V reference, three-state outputs, and a parallel microprocessor interface, housed in a 28-pin PDIP through-hole package. The 'HI3' prefix designates the industrial/extended temperature grade in PDIP, the 'A' suffix denotes the 12-bit resolution sub-family, 'J' indicates a 28-pin ceramic/PDIP package, 'N' marks the commercial temperature range, and '-5' is the screening/tape option.

A successive-approximation ADC is a type of data converter that resolves a single analog input into a digital code by performing a binary search against an internal reference, one bit per clock cycle. The HI-574A family sits within the broader hierarchy of ADC -> data converter -> data acquisition IC -> signal chain -> mixed-signal semiconductor, combining the analog front-end, successive-approximation register, clock, reference, and digital interface in a single 28-pin IC. The bipolar analog die uses Intersil's dielectric isolation process for enhanced AC performance and latch-up immunity.

Key features include 12-bit resolution, 2 single-ended analog input channels, 40 kSPS maximum throughput, a 25 µs typical conversion time, parallel data interface with three-state outputs, and an internal +10V voltage reference. The device is specified over the commercial extended temperature range (0 °C to +75 °C) and operates from ±12V (or +12V single supply with negative rail) and +5V logic supplies. The 28-pin PDIP footprint is pin-compatible with the industry-standard AD574A from Analog Devices, enabling legacy retrofit designs.

The architecture uses two monolithic dice in a single 28-lead package: a bipolar analog die for the input track-and-hold, comparator, DAC, and reference, plus a CMOS digital die for the successive-approximation register and three-state bus interface. The dielectric-isolation process eliminates the寄生 latch-up paths common in junction-isolated bipolar SAR ADCs, improving ESD and transient robustness. The internal buried-zener reference is laser-trimmed to ±0.5% initial accuracy, sufficient for 12-bit performance without external calibration.

Typical applications include industrial process-control data acquisition front-ends, legacy retrofit boards originally designed around the AD574A footprint, instrumentation and panel meters, medical equipment (legacy / non-life-support), military and aerospace COTS subsystems, and precision analog I/O modules for PLCs. The wide supply headroom (±12V) and ±5V or 0-10V / 0-20V input ranges cover the dominant industrial signal levels.

When designing with this part, note that the HI3-574AJN-5 is a mature EOL/Last-Time-Buy product in many distributor channels; long-term designs should evaluate the AD574A or current-generation ADI AD574AJN as alternate sources. Decouple the +5V Vcc and ±12V supplies with 10 µF tantalum plus 0.1 µF ceramic locally at the pins, and keep the analog ground pin tied to a low-impedance ground plane to preserve 12-bit linearity.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternative sources, and design notes not present in the bare datasheet, giving procurement and design engineers a single decision-ready reference.

Applications typiques

HI3-574AJN-5 convient pour 6 applications: Industrial Process Control Data Acquisition, Legacy AD574A Retrofit Boards, Precision Panel Meters and Instrumentation, Medical Equipment (Legacy / Non-Life-Support), Military and Aerospace COTS Subsystems, PLC Analog I/O Modules and Data Loggers.

🏭

Industrial Process Control Data Acquisition

The HI3-574AJN-5 fits industrial 4-20 mA loop and ±10V signal acquisition front-ends because its four software-selectable input ranges (0-10V, 0-20V, ±5V, ±10V) cover the de-facto standard industrial signal levels without external signal conditioning, and its 12-bit resolution (1 LSB = 2.44 mV on the ±5V range) is sufficient for the 0.1% accuracy class typical of PLC analog input modules. The ±12V supplies tolerate industrial common-mode transients and the 40 kSPS throughput multiplexes 8-16 channels per ADC at typical process-control scan rates. Compared to modern SAR ADCs it lacks simultaneous sampling, so for high-channel-count or high-bandwidth systems the AD7606 family is preferred; for retrofit boards the AD574A pinout is the primary reason this part is still in service.

🔧

Legacy AD574A Retrofit Boards

The HI3-574AJN-5 was designed as a second-source replacement for the AD574A and shares the same 28-PDIP pinout, parallel interface timing, and 0-10V / 0-20V / ±5V / ±10V input ranges, making it the part of choice for legacy retrofit boards whose original design used an AD574A and where firmware/PCB cannot be reworked. The pin-for-pin compatibility covers power pins (V+ = +12V, VEE = -12V, Vcc = +5V, GND, AGND), data bus (DB11-DB0), and control pins (CE, CS, R/C, A0, 12/8, STATUS), so substitution is mechanical and electrical. For new designs in 2026, however, the active-production AD574AJN is preferred because the HI3-574AJN-5 is now NRND with rising lead times.

🔬

Precision Panel Meters and Instrumentation

The HI3-574AJN-5 suits bench-top panel meters and laboratory instrumentation where the 0-10V and ±10V ranges cover the majority of transducer output levels (strain gauge bridges, pressure transducers, thermocouple amplifiers) and the 12-bit resolution provides a 0.025% full-scale step size adequate for 3.5-digit panel-meter readout. The internal +10V reference is laser-trimmed to ±0.5%, sufficient for 12-bit absolute accuracy without periodic calibration. The 28-PDIP through-hole package is preferred for hand-soldered prototypes and educational lab use, although surface-mount equivalents such as the AD7606 BSTZ are now standard for new production instrumentation.

💊

Medical Equipment (Legacy / Non-Life-Support)

In legacy medical monitoring equipment where the bill of materials was qualified with a specific ADC, the HI3-574AJN-5 provides the ±5V bipolar range needed for biopotential amplifier signals (ECG, EMG, EEG front-ends) and the 12-bit resolution required for 0.5% diagnostic accuracy. Its 0-75 °C commercial-extended temperature grade covers the in-vitro diagnostic instrument and bedside monitor use cases. For new medical designs targeting IEC 60601-1 and modern risk management, however, current-generation ADCs from ADI or TI with built-in self-test and longer supply horizons are preferred; the HI3-574AJN-5 should be used only for servicing installed fleets with a documented Last-Time-Buy plan.

✈️

Military and Aerospace COTS Subsystems

The HI3-574AJN-5 is qualified for many MIL-STD-454 and COTS military subsystems originally designed around the AD574A footprint, where the commercial-extended temperature grade (0 to +75 °C) is sufficient for ground-based and shipboard applications and the through-hole 28-PDIP package is preferred for field-replaceable modules. Renesas offers the HI1-574ATD-2 and HI1-574ASD-2 as the same-die military temperature (-55 to +125 °C) variants for harsher environments, and the 12-bit resolution / 40 kSPS throughput is adequate for avionics instrumentation, vehicle diagnostics, and ruggedized telemetry subsystems. For new military designs, however, the supplier recommends evaluating the ADI AD574A military drawing and modern rad-tolerant ADCs as alternatives.

🖥️

PLC Analog I/O Modules and Data Loggers

The HI3-574AJN-5 is used in 8-channel and 16-channel analog input modules for PLCs and stand-alone data loggers, where the four input ranges (0-10V, 0-20V, ±5V, ±10V) cover the standard industrial signal set (4-20 mA current-loop derived voltages, ±10V process control, 0-10V lighting/sensor) and the 40 kSPS throughput multiplexes a full bank of 16 channels in under 1 ms. The 12-bit resolution is the historical baseline for Class I PLC analog inputs, and the 28-PDIP through-hole package simplifies manufacturing and field service. For high-density modern PLCs, however, multi-channel SAR ADCs such as the AD7606 or TI ADS8568 are now standard; the HI3-574AJN-5 is being phased out in favor of these newer integrated front-ends.

What type of converter is the HI3-574AJN-5?
The HI3-574AJN-5 is a 12-bit successive-approximation (SAR) analog-to-digital converter with a 40 kSPS maximum sampling rate, an internal +10V reference, and a parallel microprocessor interface, packaged in a 28-pin PDIP. According to the Renesas/Intersil datasheet, it integrates the analog front-end, SAR register, clock, reference, and three-state bus interface in a single IC, making it a complete drop-in data-acquisition front-end for industrial and instrumentation systems.
What is the sampling rate of HI3-574AJN-5?
The HI3-574AJN-5 samples at up to 40,000 samples per second (40 kSPS), with a typical conversion time of 25 microseconds per conversion. This throughput is sufficient for industrial process-control loops, panel meters, instrumentation, and slow data-acquisition front-ends, but it is not appropriate for audio or wide-bandwidth signal acquisition where delta-sigma or pipeline ADCs are preferred.
What is the input voltage range of HI3-574AJN-5?
The HI3-574AJN-5 supports four input ranges selected by strapping the RANGE pin: 0 to +10V unipolar, 0 to +20V unipolar, ±5V bipolar, and ±10V bipolar. These ranges cover the most common industrial signal levels (±10V being the de-facto standard for industrial analog I/O and 4-20 mA current-loop derived voltages), allowing the same ADC to serve a wide variety of sensor and transducer front-ends without external signal conditioning.
Is the HI3-574AJN-5 pin-compatible with the AD574A?
Yes, the HI3-574AJN-5 in 28-PDIP is pin-for-pin compatible with the industry-standard AD574A from Analog Devices. Both share the same pinout, supply rails (±12V analog, +5V digital), and 0-10V / 0-20V / ±5V / ±10V input ranges. This compatibility is intentional and is one of the primary reasons the HI-574A family exists: it provides a second source for legacy AD574A designs and has been used as a drop-in replacement for decades.
What is the difference between HI3-574AJN-5 and HI1-574ATD-2?
The HI3-574AJN-5 is the commercial-extended (0-75 °C) 12-bit version in 28-PDIP, while the HI1-574ATD-2 is a military-temperature (-55 °C to +125 °C) 12-bit version in a different package. The Renesas part-numbering scheme encodes the screening grade in the second character (HI3 = industrial/commercial, HI1 = military), the resolution letter (A = 12-bit, B = improved linearity, C = higher speed), and the temperature/package in the suffix. Renesas lists HI1-574ATD-2 as a manufacturer-suggested upgrade for harsh-environment systems.
What is the lifecycle status of HI3-574AJN-5?
As of 2026-10-13, the HI3-574AJN-5 is in NRND (Not Recommended for New Designs) status at Renesas, with remaining stock at franchised distributors and authorized aftermarket suppliers such as Rochester Electronics. New designs should target the current-generation ADI AD574AJN as a drop-in alternate, or design-in a modern SAR ADC such as the AD7606 if the 28-PDIP footprint is not a hard constraint.
Where can I buy HI3-574AJN-5 online?
As of 2026-10-13, the HI3-574AJN-5 is available from authorized distributors including DigiKey, Mouser (limited stock), Rochester Electronics, and specialist brokers like Ampheo and Xecor. Pricing on the open market has risen to roughly $16-$28 in tube quantities due to NRND status. For production volumes, contact Renesas or Rochester Electronics for a Last-Time-Buy quote and lifetime buy agreement.
What is the lead time for HI3-574AJN-5?
As of 2026-10-13, lead time for the HI3-574AJN-5 is approximately 4-8 weeks for small quantities at franchised distributors, with some specialist brokers shipping from immediate stock. Because the part is NRND, lead times are expected to lengthen and pricing to rise as distributor inventory is consumed. For long-life programs, Rochester Electronics offers scheduled lifetime-buy programs with a defined last-order date.
What is the best drop-in replacement for HI3-574AJN-5?
The best drop-in replacement for the HI3-574AJN-5 is the Analog Devices AD574AJN, which shares the same 28-PDIP pinout, ±12V and +5V supply rails, 0-10V / 0-20V / ±5V / ±10V input ranges, and 12-bit resolution. The AD574AJN is in active production (as of 2026-10-13), making it the recommended second source for new designs. ADI's datasheet confirms pin-for-pin functional compatibility with the HI-574A family.
HI3-574AJN-5 vs AD574AJN - which is better for a new design?
For a new design in 2026, the AD574AJN is generally better than the HI3-574AJN-5 because it is in active production with a longer supply horizon, while the HI3-574AJN-5 is NRND. Both share identical 12-bit resolution, 28-PDIP footprint, ±12V supply rails, and input ranges. Choose the HI3-574AJN-5 only when you are servicing an installed base that requires an exact form-fit-function part, or when you have a Rochester lifetime-buy contract in place.
When should I choose HI3-574AJN-5 over the AD574AJN?
Choose the HI3-574AJN-5 over the AD574AJN only when (a) you are maintaining an installed fleet whose documentation specifies the Renesas/Intersil part number, (b) you have a validated lifetime-buy contract with Rochester Electronics that covers the product lifecycle, or (c) you are matching an existing bill of materials for regulatory or traceability reasons. For all new designs, the AD574AJN is preferred because of its active lifecycle status and broader distribution.

Guide de sélection

Choose the HI3-574AJN-5 only when you are servicing an installed base that specifically requires a Renesas/Intersil part number, or when you have a validated Rochester Electronics lifetime-buy contract that covers the NRND transition. For all new designs in 2026, the AD574AJN from Analog Devices is the strongly preferred drop-in alternate: it shares the same 28-PDIP pinout, the same ±12V / +5V supply rails, the same 0-10V / 0-20V / ±5V / ±10V input ranges, and the same 12-bit 40 kSPS conversion performance, but it remains in active production. For military-temperature applications, the HI1-574ATD-2 is the same-die upgrade with -55 to +125 °C support. For surface-mount or higher-density designs, the AD7606 or ADS8568 family is required, but those are not drop-in compatible and need PCB rework.

Notes de conception

The HI3-574AJN-5 requires three independent supplies: +12V (V+, pin 18) for the analog positive rail, -12V (VEE, pin 19) for the analog negative rail, and +5V (Vcc, pin 16) for the digital logic rail. Decouple each supply with a 10 µF tantalum (or low-ESR ceramic) bulk capacitor plus a 0.1 µF ceramic placed within 5 mm of the corresponding pin. The ±12V analog rails should be low-noise linear regulators (LT3042 / LT3094) rather than switching converters because the 12-bit AC performance is degraded by 5-10 LSBs if high-frequency switching noise couples into the reference or input common-mode.

The internal +10V reference (pin 20 REFOUT) is laser-trimmed to ±0.5% initial accuracy, but the absolute accuracy of the ADC over temperature degrades to ±25 ppm/°C typical. For instrumentation-grade absolute accuracy (<0.1% over 0-50 °C), drive REFIN (pin 21) from an external precision reference (REF02, ADR01) instead of using REFOUT. Also note the BIPOFF pin (22) requires a potentiometer connection to ±12V or zero to null the bipolar offset; omitting this adjustment leaves a typical ±5 LSB residual offset in the ±5V / ±10V ranges.

Use a star-ground topology with separate analog ground (pin 26 AGND) and digital ground (pin 17 GND) tied together at a single point under the IC, typically pin 17. Route the analog input traces (10VIN, 20VIN) away from the digital bus (DB1-DB11, STATUS, CE, CS) and from the reference pin (REFOUT) by at least 3 mm or use a guard trace tied to AGND. Place the 28-PDIP socket or PCB land pattern with a 0.1 inch (2.54 mm) row pitch matching the standard 28-pin DIP footprint, and reserve a 0.6 inch (15.24 mm) row span to match the AD574A footprint for source-of-supply flexibility.

The HI3-574AJN-5 is NRND as of 2026-10-13, so new production designs should target the AD574AJN (active production at ADI) as a drop-in alternate. Do not design in the HI3-574AJN-5 for new products without a Rochester Electronics lifetime-buy contract. For surface-mount designs, note that the HI-574A family is only available in 28-PDIP through-hole; surface-mount designs must use the AD7606 or ADS8568 family (QFP/TSSOP) instead, which requires PCB rework and a different software interface.
