IG5221 Présentation
An inductive proximity sensor is a non-contact electronic switch that detects the presence or absence of metallic targets by generating an electromagnetic field from an LC oscillator and sensing the eddy-current losses induced when a metal object enters the field. Within the broader sensor taxonomy, inductive sensors belong to magnetic/EM-field sensors, which sit under proximity sensors, which are a sub-category of position-presence detectors inside the industrial automation sensor family. Unlike photoelectric, capacitive, or ultrasonic sensors, inductive proximity sensors ignore non-metallic targets (plastic, wood, liquid) and operate reliably in dirty, oily, or wet environments, making them the workhorse of machine-tool and conveyor-line position feedback.
The IG5221 supports a very high switching frequency, enabling its use on high-speed production lines where conventional mechanical limit switches would suffer contact wear. Its short-circuit and reverse-polarity protection (typical of ifm's IEC 61131-2-compatible industrial sensors) and IP67 ingress protection rating enable direct mounting on equipment without additional enclosures. The integrated 4-wire M12 connector pigtail supports standard PNP load wiring into any PLC digital input module.
Typical applications include position detection of metal workpieces on conveyors, end-of-stroke confirmation on pneumatic cylinders, tool-length verification on CNC machines, rotational-speed sensing via a target bolt on a shaft, and level detection of metal cans in packaging lines. Its metal housing tolerates incidental impact and coolants better than plastic-bodied equivalents.
When integrating the IG5221, allow at least 2x the rated nominal sensing distance (Sn) of free clearance around the sensing face for reliable operation, and avoid embedding the threaded barrel in ferromagnetic material without a non-magnetic spacer. Use a torque wrench and 35 N·m maximum mounting torque to avoid housing distortion that shifts the sensing characteristic. The PNP NO output sources current into a PLC's sourcing input, which is the IEC 61131-2 standard for European-style control wiring.

Applications typiques
IG5221 convient pour 6 applications: Conveyor Workpiece Position Detection, Pneumatic Cylinder End-of-Stroke Confirmation, CNC Machine Tool-Length Verification, Rotational Speed Sensing via Target Bolt, Metal-Can Level Detection in Packaging Lines, Outdoor Pump Station Limit Switch.
Conveyor Workpiece Position Detection
The IG5221's 5 mm flush sensing range and 18-36 V DC supply align directly with 24 V PLC-controlled conveyor lines that detect steel or aluminum workpieces passing a fixed test point. With its PNP NO output, it sources a clean 24 V signal into any standard sourcing-input module, and its IP67 metal housing tolerates coolant mist and washdown that would defeat plastic-bodied inductive sensors. The high switching frequency supports line speeds above 500 parts per minute without mechanical contact bounce. Position it flush with the conveyor rail bracket using a non-magnetic nylon lock nut, and set the PLC filter time to 5 ms or less for accurate indexing on high-speed lines.
Recommandé
Pneumatic Cylinder End-of-Stroke Confirmation
Mounted on the rod-end or cap-end of a pneumatic cylinder, the IG5221 confirms by non-contact detection that the piston magnet (or attached ferrous target) has reached mechanical end position, eliminating the need for a mechanical limit switch prone to contact wear. The M18 metal barrel survives repetitive impact vibration from cycling cylinders and the high humidity of cylinder-exhaust air, and the wide -25 C to +70 C operating window handles cold-storage and high-heat foundry cells. The 5 mm flush range covers typical cylinder rod-end target plates without requiring a protruding shielded-head geometry.
Recommandé
CNC Machine Tool-Length Verification
In CNC machining cells, the IG5221 provides low-cost confirmation of tool presence and tool-length reference by detecting a target on the spindle or tool holder. Its 5 mm sensing range and sub-millisecond response enable sub-millimeter accuracy when paired with a precision-etched reference target on a tool-presetter arm. The robust M18 metal body withstands cutting-fluid jets and the occasional crash that destroys less-rugged sensors; the IP67 rating plus metal housing are decisive advantages over IP67 plastic-bodied sensors at the same price point on shop-floor deployment.
Recommandé
Rotational Speed Sensing via Target Bolt
The IG5221 mounted over a rotating shaft with a single steel bolt passing once per revolution produces a pulse train whose frequency directly encodes shaft RPM, suitable for conveying drives, pumps, and large motor speed monitoring where encoders are over-spec. The very high switching frequency the family is rated for supports fast motors in the tens of thousands RPM range without pulse folding; the PNP NO output feeds directly into a digital counter input. The M18 threaded barrel locks to a fixed bracket, and the flush-mount geometry keeps the sensing face only one bolt-length away from the target for maximum noise immunity on wobbly shafts.
Recommandé
Metal-Can Level Detection in Packaging Lines
On food-and-beverage packaging lines, the IG5221 used through a non-metal sight tube or behind a stainless-steel partition senses the presence of steel cans, ignoring plastic bottles and aluminum foils whose conductivity produces weaker induction and may need a sensitivity adjustment. The IP67 metal housing tolerates the daily washdown sanitation cycle of beverage plants, and the PNP NO output sources straight to the conveyor PLC. For full hygienic-stainless operation upgrade to the IGC234 in the same M18 geometry.
Recommandé
Outdoor Pump Station Limit Switch
Mounted on the outside of a pumping station to detect the upper or lower float position of a steel float, the IG5221's IP67 metal housing and -25 C cold-start rating make it suitable for municipal water utility service. The 18-36 V DC supply matches solar-battery-buffered 24 V control systems common in remote installations. Compared to a mechanical float switch with mercury or reed contacts, the inductive sensor has no moving parts and a typical multi-million-cycle lifetime under pump-cycle duty.

Notes de conception
Avoid embedding the IG5221's threaded barrel directly into ferromagnetic material (mild steel bracket) without a non-magnetic spacer (aluminum, brass, nylon), as the surrounding steel damps the field and reduces the effective sensing range by 30 to 60 percent. Mount flush through a 17 mm clearance hole or use ifm's anti-mounting-bracket E11015S when retrofitting into existing steel structure. This is the most common IG-series field complaint.
Although the IG5221 is rated to +70 C ambient, sustained proximity to a hydraulic manifold, electric motor housing, or heated enclosure can drive the local ambient above the spec. Verify at the installation site with a thermocouple after 1 hour of operation, and derate by a margin of 10 C for safety. Cold-start at -25 C may add 200-400 ms to oscillator stabilization - account for this in safety-circuit timing.
When switching high-inductance loads (DC relays, solenoids, contactors) directly with the IG5221's PNP NO output, install a flyback diode (1N4007 or 1N5819) directly across the inductor coil to clamp the inductive kickback to within the sensor's protected output voltage. The IG5221 includes internal short-circuit protection but the EMC immunity from external snubbing is much better with a flyback on every solenoid. For capacitive loads, add an in-line series resistor to limit inrush below the sensor's rated output current.
Use PUR-jacketed M12 cordsets (such as ifm EVC002 or EVC004) in flexing or oil-rich applications and standard PVC cordsets in static cabinet runs. Bundle the sensing cable away from VFD motor power cables (minimum 100 mm parallel gap, or run in a separate conduit) since the sensor's oscillator can pick up interference from PWM-switched variable-frequency drives, causing false triggers. A grounded metal cable gland at the panel entry restores reliable ground separation.
