INA139NA/250 Présentation
A current shunt monitor is a specialized analog IC that amplifies the small differential voltage developed across a current-sense resistor (shunt) inserted in series with the load, allowing an ADC, comparator, or analog control loop to read load current without disrupting the ground path. The INA139 family sits in the power management signal-chain hierarchy as: current sense amplifier -> amplifier IC -> analog IC -> semiconductor. By performing the measurement on the high side (between supply rail and load), the INA139 detects both load shorts and normal operating current, which is critical for battery management and motor control where ground-referenced sensing would miss fault currents.
Key features of the INA139NA/250 include a complete unipolar high-side measurement circuit in a tiny SOT-23-5 footprint, single-resistor gain programming (RSET sets the transconductance), independent supply and input common-mode voltages from 2.7V to 36V, 60µA typical quiescent current, and an SOT-23-5 package enabling use in space-constrained designs. The output swings up to within 200 mV of either rail on a 5V supply, maximizing ADC dynamic range when powered from low-voltage rails.
The INA139 uses a precision current-converter architecture that takes the differential shunt voltage and converts it to a ground-referenced current through RSET, then drops it across a load resistor to produce an analog voltage. With RSET = 1 MΩ and RLOAD = 10 kΩ, the resulting scale factor is 1 V/A; lower RSET values produce proportionally higher output. The 440 kHz bandwidth supports fast overcurrent detection in PWM-driven loads such as brushless DC motors and solenoid drivers, where current changes occur on sub-millisecond timescales.
Typical applications include battery management (cell phones, laptops, e-bikes, UPS), motor control (brushed DC and brushless DC drives), load monitoring in server/telecom power distribution, automotive body electronics (lighting, window lifters, seat controllers), and solar/photovoltaic panel current tracking. The wide common-mode range also makes it useful for 24V industrial sensor and actuator rails.
When designing with the INA139NA/250, place the shunt resistor as close to the IC input pins as possible to minimize parasitic resistance, and use a 0.1µF ceramic bypass capacitor on the supply pin. Note that the INA139 output is current-mode; it requires an external load resistor (RLOAD) to ground at the OUT pin to convert to voltage. Choose RSET for the desired gain, but keep in mind that bandwidth is inversely proportional to RSET — for high-speed current control, choose RSET in the tens-of-kΩ range rather than 1 MΩ.

Applications typiques
INA139NA/250 convient pour 7 applications: Battery Management & Charging Current Monitoring, Motor Control & H-Bridge Current Sensing, Server & Telecom Power Distribution Monitoring, Automotive Body Electronics & Lighting, Solar Panel & Photovoltaic String Monitoring, Industrial 24V Sensor & Actuator Rails, USB & Power Bank Load Monitoring.
Battery Management & Charging Current Monitoring
The INA139NA/250 is well-suited to battery management current sensing because of its 60 µA quiescent current and 2.7 V to 36 V input common-mode range, allowing the monitor itself to remain powered in sleep mode without significantly draining the cell. Placed on the high side between the pack terminal and the system load, it senses both charging current (during sun/USB input) and discharge current (during operation) with one shunt resistor. With RSET = 1 MΩ and RLOAD = 10 kΩ the scale factor is 1 V/A, which an ADC can read directly. Unlike a Hall-effect current sensor, it adds no series resistance to the load path beyond the shunt itself, preserving efficiency in e-bike, UPS, and laptop applications where every milliohm counts.
Recommandé
Motor Control & H-Bridge Current Sensing
In brushed and brushless DC motor drives, the INA139NA/250's 440 kHz bandwidth enables fast overcurrent detection in PWM-switched H-bridge topologies where current changes occur on sub-millisecond timescales. Its high-side measurement detects motor short-to-ground and short-to-battery faults that ground-referenced sensing would miss, protecting the H-bridge FETs and the upstream fuse. Use a low-side shunt (e.g. 10 mΩ) and RSET = 100 kΩ to scale motor currents of 1-5 A into a 0-3.3 V ADC range. The SOT-23-5 footprint fits next to the half-bridge driver on motor PCBs, reducing loop area and parasitic inductance.
Recommandé
Server & Telecom Power Distribution Monitoring
For -48 V telecom and 12 V server power distribution, the INA139NA/250's 2.7 V to 36 V input common-mode range comfortably covers 12 V rails and lets the part sense current directly from the bus, eliminating the need for isolated current transducers that are bulky and expensive. With a 1 mΩ shunt, the part can monitor 30 A continuous loads at high efficiency and feed the ground-referenced output directly into a hot-swap controller or microcontroller ADC. The 60 µA quiescent current contributes negligibly to system standby power, important for Energy Star and 80 PLUS compliant designs. Designers often pair it with hot-swap controllers and PMBus ADCs to implement per-rail current telemetry.
Recommandé
Automotive Body Electronics & Lighting
The INA139NA/250 enables monitoring of automotive body loads such as headlamps, tail lamps, seat heaters, and window lifters, where high-side sensing is mandatory to detect both shorts to ground and shorts to battery. With a -40 °C to +125 °C operating range and 36 V common-mode range, it tolerates load-dump transients (when paired with a TVS clamp). The SOT-23-5 package fits the tight PCB behind instrument clusters and door modules, and the analog output drives either an ADC or a discrete comparator for foldback current limiting. Note that for AEC-Q100-qualified automotive designs, the INA180-Q1 family is preferred over the standard INA139.
Recommandé
Solar Panel & Photovoltaic String Monitoring
In off-grid solar charge controllers and micro-inverter current tracking, the INA139NA/250 monitors string current at the panel-side high-side rail, with the analog output fed to an MPPT algorithm running on a microcontroller. Because the common-mode voltage can exceed 20 V in 24 V nominal PV systems, the 36 V common-mode range provides ample margin over open-circuit voltage at cold temperatures. The wide input range also allows direct connection across the panel without additional level translation. Designers commonly place the shunt between the PV+ terminal and the buck converter input switch node to sense true panel current without diode drops in the measurement path.

Industrial 24V Sensor & Actuator Rails
Factory automation I/O modules commonly use 24 V rails for sensors and actuators, and the INA139NA/250 provides per-channel current monitoring for fault detection (open load, short circuit, broken wire). The 60 µA quiescent current allows the monitor to remain always-on without exceeding the I/O module's standby power budget. With a small shunt in series with each channel, the analog output drives either an LED indicator bar or a centralized ADC, enabling predictive maintenance. The SOT-23-5 footprint enables dense 8-channel or 16-channel monitoring PCBs where board space is at a premium.
Recommandé
USB & Power Bank Load Monitoring
In USB-PD power banks and wall adapters, the INA139NA/250 monitors the discharge current to detect overload conditions and to drive an integrated coulomb counter for remaining-capacity display. Its low 60 µA quiescent current contributes minimally to standby drain, and the SOT-23-5 package fits alongside the USB-PD controller and buck-boost converter. With a 10 mΩ shunt and RSET = 100 kΩ, the device scales 3 A load current into roughly 3 V at the OUT pin, well within the 0-5 V ADC range of typical microcontroller-based power banks. The high-side topology also detects VBUS shorts that ground-referenced sensing would miss.

Notes de conception
Place the external shunt resistor RSHUNT as close as possible to the IN+ and IN- pins to minimize parasitic trace resistance and inductance in the differential input path. Keep the IN+ and IN- traces short and symmetrical; any imbalance converts common-mode voltage into differential error. Add a 0.1 µF ceramic bypass capacitor directly from the VS pin (pin 4) to GND (pin 2) to suppress supply noise; place the capacitor within 3 mm of the VS pin for best high-frequency rejection.
The INA139NA/250 output (pin 5) is a current output, NOT a voltage output. To produce an analog voltage, you MUST connect an external resistor RLOAD from OUT to GND. Without RLOAD, the output node floats and the part produces no usable signal. Also remember that bandwidth is inversely proportional to RSET - choosing RSET = 1 MΩ gives 1 V/A scale but only ~5 kHz bandwidth; choose RSET = 10 kΩ if you need full 440 kHz bandwidth for PWM current control.
For accurate high-side sensing, use a Kelvin (4-wire) connection to the shunt resistor: route the high-current path through the outer pads and the IN+/IN- traces through the inner sense pads. This eliminates the voltage drop introduced by the high-current path from the measurement, often reducing effective error by 0.5-2 % depending on PCB trace resistance. The TI INA139/INA169 datasheet application notes show recommended layouts for through-hole and SMD shunt resistors.
The INA139NA/250 draws 60 µA from VS; in battery-powered designs, gate the VS supply with a P-MOSFET or load switch controlled by the system MCU so the monitor only powers up when current measurement is required. This reduces sleep-mode current to ~0 µA and prevents the 60 µA quiescent from continuously draining the cell. Wake-up time is microseconds (the part has no power-on-reset delay beyond the analog settling), so it can be polled rather than kept always-on.
