LM393F-GE2 - Dual Open-Collector Comparator | ROHM
Référence : LM393F-GE2 ✗ Fin de vieLM393F-GE2 Présentation
A comparator is an analog signal-processing IC that converts the relationship between two voltages into a digital result. The LM393 belongs to the comparator hierarchy within amplifier and linear ICs, where its role is to determine whether a signal is above or below a reference. Unlike a general-purpose operational amplifier used for closed-loop amplification, a comparator is normally operated open-loop and switches its output when the differential input crosses a defined threshold.
The LM393F-GE2 combines two independent comparators in one 8-pin SOP package. Its open-collector outputs can sink output current while the device is in the low state and require an external pull-up resistor when used with a positive logic supply. The 3 V to 32 V operating range accommodates both conventional 5 V logic and higher-voltage industrial systems. The 4.5 mV maximum input offset voltage and 0.25 µA maximum input bias current help reduce threshold errors and loading in sensor and monitoring circuits.
The two-channel architecture allows independent thresholds or complementary decisions to be implemented in one package. A 1 µs propagation delay is suitable for common industrial control, sensing, and protection tasks where response time is adequate but nanosecond-level performance is unnecessary. Because the outputs are open collector, each channel can also participate in wired logic when the voltage, current, and pull-up requirements are appropriate.
Typical applications include overvoltage and undervoltage monitoring, sensor threshold detection, industrial control interfaces, DC motor-direction sensing, and window or limit comparators. The comparator can evaluate a feedback voltage against a reference generated by a resistor divider or reference IC. Its low input bias current is especially useful when the sensing source has high impedance, while the open-collector output simplifies interface to transistors, relays, and digital logic.
Designers should select the pull-up resistor and output pull-down load with the allowable output current, supply voltage, and switching-speed requirements in mind. Input common-mode range and output saturation behavior must also be checked for the selected logic level. Because the ROHM status is Not Recommended for New Designs, new designs should evaluate an actively supported comparator unless this part is required for continuity with an existing qualified design.
This product record combines the exact LM393F-GE2 specifications, package information, lifecycle status, sourcing workflow, and drop-in comparison guidance. The comparison and design notes also clarify where pin-compatible parts differ in supply range, common-mode capability, or electrical performance, helping engineers make an informed continuity decision.

Applications typiques
LM393F-GE2 convient pour 6 applications: Industrial Overvoltage Monitoring, Sensor Threshold Detection, DC Motor Direction Sensing, Power-Supply Window Detection, Limit and Alarm Comparator, Interface and Signal Conditioning.
Industrial Overvoltage Monitoring
The LM393F-GE2 fits industrial overvoltage monitoring because its two independent channels compare a divided feedback signal with a reference and respond within 1 µs. Its 3 V to 32 V operating range supports higher-voltage control systems, while the 4.5 mV maximum input offset determines the practical threshold accuracy. Place one channel on the protected rail and use the other for a second limit or complementary condition. The open-collector output can trigger a pull-up logic signal or a protection-stage transistor. Confirm the input common-mode range and output sink current before finalizing the threshold network.
Recommandé
Sensor Threshold Detection
The LM393F-GE2 is suitable for detecting a sensor output crossing a defined threshold because the low input bias current of 0.25 µA maximum limits loading on high-impedance sensing networks. Both channels are available for independent sensor or alarm comparisons, and the 1 µs propagation delay is suitable for many non-timing-critical detection functions. The 8-pin SOP package also allows the two channels to share a compact footprint. The input offset voltage can shift the effective trip point, so include tolerance in the resistor-divider and reference design rather than treating the nominal threshold as exact.
Recommandé
DC Motor Direction Sensing
The LM393F-GE2 can support DC motor direction sensing by comparing two position-sensor signals and generating a direction indication. Two channels allow opposite comparisons to be implemented independently, and the 1 µs propagation delay provides faster response than many general-purpose relay-control stages. The open-collector outputs can operate a direction-driver interface through external transistors when motor current exceeds the comparator's allowed sink capability. Keep sensing paths away from motor-switching noise and verify input common-mode limits during motor transients to prevent false direction changes.
Recommandé
Power-Supply Window Detection
The LM393F-GE2 fits power-supply window detection by comparing a scaled supply voltage against upper and lower references in its two channels. The 3 V to 32 V supply range permits use beyond a 5 V logic rail, while the 4.5 mV maximum input offset defines part of the threshold uncertainty after scaling. An open-collector output can provide a wired status signal through a pull-up resistor. Account for resistor tolerance, reference variation, temperature drift, and input offset in the guard band so normal rail variation does not produce chatter near either limit.
Recommandé
Limit and Alarm Comparator
The two channels in LM393F-GE2 can implement separate upper and lower alarms, independent limit checks, or a complementary alarm function. Its 1 µs propagation delay is appropriate for general alarm and control loops, while the open-collector outputs allow status signals to be combined with suitable pull-up networks. The -40 °C to +85 °C operating range covers many industrial environments. For designs requiring fast repetitive transitions, low output-current operation, or a smaller voltage range, verify dynamic output behavior and load requirements rather than relying only on the 1 µs headline specification.
Recommandé
Interface and Signal Conditioning
The LM393F-GE2 can convert an analog level relationship into an open-collector digital indication for a controller, relay driver, or discrete logic stage. Its 2-channel organization allows complementary or independent comparisons, and the 3 V to 32 V supply range supports both conventional logic and industrial interfaces. The maximum input bias current of 0.25 µA helps preserve weak sensor signals, while 4.5 mV maximum input offset influences the decision boundary. Use a suitable pull-up voltage and resistor, and add an external transistor when the driven load exceeds the comparator output rating.

Notes de conception
Do not assume an open-collector output can source current. Pull each output up to an appropriate positive supply through a resistor, and verify the pull-up voltage remains compatible with the receiving logic. The comparator's low state must sink the pull-up current plus any attached load. If the output drives a relay, motor, lamp, or multiple CMOS inputs, use an external transistor so the load remains within the output current and voltage ratings.
Design the 3 V to 32 V supply path for the intended operating environment and ensure the input pins remain within the applicable common-mode range at every supply level. A high supply voltage does not by itself make all input thresholds valid. Use resistor-divider attenuation when sensing a voltage above the permitted input range, and account for resistor tolerances so the scaled signal retains adequate margin around the 4.5 mV maximum input offset.
Place the comparator close to the sensed or reference nodes to minimize susceptibility to capacitive noise and ground offsets. Keep output pull-up resistors near the relevant device pins, provide a stable ground-return path, and separate sensitive input routing from switching-node traces. In a two-channel design, maintain consistent grounding between channels so differences in ground potential do not shift their effective thresholds in opposite directions.
The manufacturer classifies LM393F-GE2 as Not Recommended for New Designs. Existing qualified products may continue to use the part, but new programs should conduct an engineering review of an actively supported equivalent. Do not treat a shared package name as sufficient proof of interchangeability: compare supply range, input common-mode limits, offset voltage, input bias current, propagation delay, output current, temperature grade, and qualification requirements before substitution.
