LTC1605ACN Présentation
An analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is a data-converter integrated circuit that converts a continuous analog voltage into a discrete digital code, occupying a key position in the signal-chain hierarchy: transducer -> analog front end / signal conditioning -> ADC -> digital processor. Successive-approximation register (SAR) ADCs in particular combine a sample-and-hold, precision reference, switched-capacitor DAC and SAR logic to deliver one conversion per clock, with low latency and deterministic behavior well suited to multiplexed data acquisition and industrial instrumentation.
Key features of the LTC1605ACN include ±2.0 LSB (max) INL over temperature, guaranteed 16-bit no missing codes, a microprocessor-compatible 16-bit or two-byte parallel output port, and the ability to be driven by an external reference when higher absolute accuracy is required across temperature. Synchronous sampling and a wide input range let it directly digitize industrial ±10 V signals without external scaling amplifiers.
The device uses a precision bandgap reference and trimmed internal clock, simplifying the analog front end to a simple RC input network plus an external reference option for temperature-stable accuracy. Successive-approximation architecture yields deterministic latency and excellent DC linearity for instrumentation applications.
Typical applications include industrial process control data acquisition boards, multichannel multiplexed data loggers, instrumentation and measurement front ends, and legacy factory automation I/O subsystems. The bipolar ±10 V range lets it connect directly to legacy industrial sensors and 4-20 mA loop resistors.
Design with the device by ensuring the analog input pin sees a low-impedance buffer or RC network matching the ADC's switched-capacitor front end, and by tying REFCOMP to a 10 µF bypass capacitor near the pin to minimize reference noise. Latency is one conversion clock, simplifying timing analysis for sequential multiplexer scans.

Applications typiques
LTC1605ACN convient pour 6 applications: Industrial Process Control Data Acquisition, Multichannel Data Logger, Medical Patient Monitoring Front End, Audio Test & Measurement Instrumentation, Legacy Factory Automation I/O, Laboratory Instrumentation and Bench DMMs.
Industrial Process Control Data Acquisition
The LTC1605ACN fits industrial process-control data acquisition boards thanks to its ±10 V bipolar input range — matching legacy 4-20 mA loop-resistor voltages without external signal conditioning. Its 100 ksps throughput samples multiplexed analog channels at sub-100 µs per channel, while ±2.0 LSB INL and 16-bit no-missing-codes ensure that process variables (pressure, temperature, flow) are digitized with full industrial accuracy. Single +5 V supply operation at 55 mW simplifies backplane power budgeting and reduces thermal stress in sealed DIN-rail enclosures.
Recommandé
Multichannel Data Logger
The LTC1605ACN serves as the per-channel ADC in multichannel data loggers, where its 16-bit resolution and 100 ksps capture transient input variations with sub-millisecond resolution. The integrated sample-and-hold and trimmed internal clock eliminate external timing components, while the microprocessor-compatible 16-bit parallel port lets an MCU or FPGA burst-read conversion results at full speed. Bipolar ±10 V input accepts thermocouple, strain-gauge and 4-20 mA shunt signals directly with a simple input RC network, keeping per-channel BOM low in a 16- or 32-channel scanner.
Recommandé
Medical Patient Monitoring Front End
In medical patient monitoring equipment, the LTC1605ACN digitizes ECG, SpO2 photodiode and temperature signals with 16-bit resolution at up to 100 ksps — sufficient for both 500 Hz ECG waveforms and slower 100 Hz temperature channels. The internal precision reference and low 55 mW dissipation keep battery-powered portable monitors running longer, while the 28-PDIP through-hole package simplifies hand-rework for low-volume clinical and FDA pre-production builds. The bipolar ±10 V input handles sensor bias excursions without saturating on motion artefacts.
Recommandé
Audio Test & Measurement Instrumentation
Audio test and measurement front ends leverage the LTC1605ACN's 16-bit no-missing-codes linearity to perform distortion and frequency-response sweeps on analog audio gear. Although higher-bit sigma-delta ADCs dominate consumer audio, the 100 ksps SAR architecture and bipolar ±10 V input are ideal for production-line audio analyzers needing deterministic latency and DC accuracy. The single +5 V supply and 28-PDIP package fit well into bench-instrument chassis with through-hole signal conditioning stages and ±10 V analog rails.
Recommandé
Legacy Factory Automation I/O
The LTC1605ACN is a workhorse ADC in legacy factory automation I/O subsystems, where 28-PDIP through-hole form factor is desired for field-replaceable modules. Its ±10 V input range directly digitizes the ±10 V analog signals coming from valve-position sensors and potentiometric feedback devices, while the 16-bit or two-byte parallel output interfaces to vintage 8086/Z80 microcontrollers without glue logic. Single +5 V operation matches the prevailing backplane supply of legacy PLCs and minimizes retrofit cost.
Recommandé
Laboratory Instrumentation and Bench DMMs
Bench top digital multimeters and laboratory instrumentation benefit from the LTC1605ACN's ±2.0 LSB INL and 16-bit no-missing-codes performance, which together provide ~0.004 % absolute measurement uncertainty. At 100 ksps the converter supports 4.5-digit DMM DCV and ACV measurement channels while dissipating only 55 mW per channel, allowing dense multi-channel instrument designs. The internal precision reference with external override lets designers easily upgrade to a low-drift precision reference for higher-resolution lab equipment builds.

Notes de conception
The LTC1605ACN operates from a single +5 V analog supply (VANA pins 1 and 7). Decouple each VANA pin to ground with a 10 µF tantalum bypass capacitor in parallel with a 0.1 µF ceramic — placed within 5 mm of the package pin. A separate digital +5 V (VD) plane and a ferrite bead between analog and digital supplies prevent digital switching noise from contaminating the analog reference and degrading INL.
Route the AIN trace as a guarded, low-impedance differential pair wrapped with a ground guard trace. The SAR architecture uses a switched-capacitor front end, so any series input resistance longer than ~10 Ω at the AIN pin reduces linearity. Use a wide ground return along the analog-input side of the package and tie AGND and DGND together only at one point near the GND pins.
Always bypass the REFCOMP pin with a 10 µF capacitor; omitting this greatly increases reference noise. When driving AIN with a high-impedance source, buffer it with a low-offset amplifier — otherwise the switched input capacitance introduces settling error. Finally, do not clock CS and RD simultaneously without observing the BUSY signal, or the read cycle may collide with an in-progress conversion.
