LTC2393HLX-16 Présentation
What is a SAR ADC? A successive approximation register ADC is a precision data converter that uses a binary search algorithm through an internal DAC to digitize an analog input. SAR ADCs occupy the middle ground between high-speed flash converters and ultra-high-resolution delta-sigma ADCs, delivering low-latency, deterministic conversion with no pipeline delay. They sit within the broader hierarchy: data converter -> ADC -> SAR ADC -> precision mixed-signal IC, and are widely preferred when both speed and DC accuracy are required simultaneously.
Key features include an integrated precision reference with 0.5% initial accuracy and ±20 ppm/°C maximum temperature coefficient, eliminating the need for an external reference. The part supports both parallel and serial interface modes with no cycle latency, and provides true 16-bit no-missing-codes performance across the entire operating range. Internal low-noise architecture achieves 94.2 dB typical SNR at the full 1Msps throughput.
The LTC2393HLX-16 architecture combines a charge-redistribution capacitive DAC with a high-speed comparator and SAR logic, all clocked internally for low jitter. The differential input structure rejects common-mode noise and harmonic distortion, and the wide ±4.096V input range supports direct interfacing to industrial ±10V-scaled signals after attenuation. Single 5V operation simplifies power tree design in mixed-signal systems.
Typical applications include precision industrial process control, medical instrumentation, seismic data acquisition, high-speed multichannel data acquisition systems, and ATE (automatic test equipment). The wide input range and high SNR make it well suited for vibration analysis, sonar front-ends, and spectrum analyzer input stages.
When designing with this device, ensure the analog input common-mode voltage is biased near AVDD/2 and that the RC charge kick-back at the input is absorbed with an external buffer such as the LT6350. Decouple AVDD and DVDD independently with low-ESR ceramic capacitors placed close to the supply pins.

Applications typiques
LTC2393HLX-16 convient pour 6 applications: Precision Industrial Process Control, Medical Instrumentation Data Acquisition, Seismic and Vibration Data Acquisition, Automated Test Equipment (ATE) Digitizers, High-Speed Multichannel Data Acquisition Systems, Spectrum Analyzer Input Stages.
Precision Industrial Process Control
The LTC2393HLX-16 fits precision industrial process control with its 16-bit 1 Msps SAR architecture and 94.2 dB typical SNR, which digitizes 4-20 mA loop signals and strain-gauge bridge outputs with high DC accuracy. Its ±4.096 V differential input range directly interfaces to industrial ±10 V-scaled sensor outputs after a simple resistor divider, eliminating the need for an instrumentation front-end. The no-cycle-latency SAR conversion is critical for closed-loop PID control loops, where a sigma-delta filter delay would destabilize the control algorithm. With 0.5% internal reference accuracy, the part delivers stable readings across factory-floor temperature swings.
Recommandé
Medical Instrumentation Data Acquisition
In medical instrumentation such as patient monitoring and diagnostic imaging front-ends, the LTC2393HLX-16 provides 16-bit 1 Msps conversion with 94.2 dB SNR, preserving the dynamic range of low-amplitude bioelectric signals like ECG and EMG. The differential input structure rejects common-mode 50/60 Hz mains interference picked up on long patient leads. No pipeline delay means the digitized waveform is immediately available for real-time arrhythmia detection and alarm generation. Single 5 V operation simplifies medical-isolation power designs.
Recommandé
Seismic and Vibration Data Acquisition
Geophone and accelerometer arrays in seismic acquisition systems require wide dynamic range and high sampling rate to capture broadband vibration signatures, and the LTC2393HLX-16 fits with its 94.2 dB SNR and 1 Msps throughput. The SAR architecture delivers a single-sample deterministic latency, simplifying triggered event capture from multiple synchronized channels. The wide ±4.096 V input range accommodates the output of typical piezo-electric accelerometers without additional gain stages. Integrated precision reference removes drift concerns in long-duration field deployments.
Recommandé
Automated Test Equipment (ATE) Digitizers
In ATE pin-electronics and waveform digitizer cards, the LTC2393HLX-16 captures the full-scale amplitude and timing of device-under-test signals with 16-bit resolution and 1 Msps rate. The wide ±4.096 V differential input range simplifies front-end scaling for ±10 V stimulus/measurement channels commonly found in mixed-signal ATE. The integrated low-noise reference and tight ±2 LSB INL maximum guarantee repeatable parametric test results across the test floor's thermal environment.
Recommandé
High-Speed Multichannel Data Acquisition Systems
Multichannel DAQ systems for laboratory instrumentation and spectrum analyzers use the LTC2393HLX-16 to digitize multiple analog channels with deterministic latency, simplifying downstream DSP and triggering. The pin-compatible LQFP-48 footprint allows multiple LTC2393-16 family parts to share a common PCB layout, supporting per-channel resolution and speed trade-offs from 250 ksps to 1 Msps. Parallel interface mode enables direct connection to FPGAs for high-throughput buffered acquisition with no per-sample software overhead.
Recommandé
Spectrum Analyzer Input Stages
Spectrum analyzer and RF measurement front-ends use the LTC2393HLX-16 to digitize down-converted IF signals with 16-bit resolution and 94.2 dB SNR, preserving the spurious-free dynamic range of the analog signal chain. The 1 Msps rate supports analysis bandwidths in the 100s of kHz, suitable for audio-band and baseband signal characterization. SAR architecture's lack of group delay simplifies FFT-based triggering and gating in time-frequency analysis.

Notes de conception
Place the 1 microfarat AVDD decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of the AVDD pin with a wide trace to a low-inductance ground via. A 0.1 microfarat ceramic in parallel absorbs high-frequency noise from the SAR charge kick-back. The REFCOMP pin must be decoupled with a 10 microfarat low-ESR ceramic capacitor and the REF pin bypassed with 4.7 microfarat ceramic, as specified in the manufacturer reference schematic. Separating analog and digital ground planes under the LQFP-48 keeps digital return currents away from the analog front-end.
Do not connect the LTC2393HLX-16 differential inputs directly to a low-impedance signal source; the SAR architecture draws charge kick-back at the start of each conversion and will degrade linearity unless buffered by a low-noise, fast-settling amplifier such as the LT6350. The common-mode input voltage must be biased near AVDD/2; failing to bias the inputs causes severe INL and SNR degradation. Avoid running noisy digital lines under or adjacent to the analog input traces.
Route the CNV (start-of-conversion) and BUSY signals with controlled impedance and short stub lengths to avoid timing skew in high-speed acquisitions. In parallel interface mode, the 16 output data lines should be length-matched to within 25 ps to maintain group-skew under 1 LSB at 1 Msps. If using the serial interface, isolate the SCK and SDO traces from the analog inputs with a ground guard trace.
