MAX1079CTC+T Présentation
An ADC (analog-to-digital converter) is a data-acquisition integrated circuit that converts a continuous analog input voltage into a discrete N-bit binary code. Successive-approximation ADCs use an internal DAC and comparator to binary-search the input, trading off conversion speed against area and power. The MAX1079 sits in the broader hierarchy: ADC -> data converter -> data converter IC -> signal-chain IC -> semiconductor. Within Maxim's portfolio it belongs to the low-power, high-speed, serial-interface 10-bit SAR family.
Key features of the MAX1079CTC+T include true-differential analog inputs (rejecting common-mode noise), an internal 2.5V reference (eliminating an external reference IC and saving board space), automatic shutdown between conversions for battery savings, and a small 4x4 mm WQFN-12 footprint suited to space-constrained PCBs. The MAX1079 differs from MAX1077 by offering 225ksps minimum throughput at the slower part number and 1.5Msps on the MAX1079.
Architecturally, the device integrates an input track-and-hold, a charge-redistribution SAR core, an internal 2.5V bandgap reference, and a serial interface block. The internal reference eliminates external reference drift errors, while the true-differential input allows direct connection to bridge sensors, thermocouples via instrumentation amplifiers, and differential signal chains without an external differential amplifier in many cases.
Typical applications include portable data acquisition, industrial process control loop monitoring, battery-powered instrumentation, medical sensor front ends, optical-module monitoring, and consumer audio level meters. The MAX1079 is particularly suited to systems that need more than 225 ksps but are power-sensitive on battery power.
When designing with the MAX1079CTC+T, ensure the analog supply is well decoupled (1 uF + 0.1 uF) and that the exposed pad is soldered to a ground pour to provide a low-impedance thermal and electrical return. The serial-interface timing budget must respect the 1.5 Msps maximum fSAMPLE; higher SPI clock rates will not increase throughput beyond the converter's intrinsic limit.

Applications typiques
MAX1079CTC+T convient pour 6 applications: Portable Battery-Powered Data Acquisition, Industrial Process Control Loop Monitoring, Optical Module Monitoring (SFP/QSFP DOM), Vibration and Acoustic Monitoring, Medical Sensor Front-End Digitization, Consumer Audio Level Metering.
Portable Battery-Powered Data Acquisition
The MAX1079CTC+T's single 2.7V-3.6V analog supply, internal 2.5V reference (eliminating an external reference IC), and approximately 1.8 mA supply current at 1.5 Msps make it well-suited to portable battery-powered data-acquisition systems. Placed between the sensor signal chain and a microcontroller's SPI port, it captures 10-bit samples at up to 1.5 Msps without the BOM cost of an external reference. Compared to discrete ADC + reference + op-amp front-end designs, the integrated reference reduces board area by roughly 30-40%, and the automatic power-down between conversions extends battery life in low-duty-cycle applications.
Recommandé
Industrial Process Control Loop Monitoring
The MAX1079CTC+T's true-differential analog inputs and 1.5 Msps throughput fit industrial process-control loop monitoring where 4-20 mA current loops, bridge sensors, and differential signal chains need to be digitized with good noise immunity. The internal 2.5V reference eliminates reference-drift errors over temperature, while the small WQFN-12 footprint fits densely-populated PLC and DAQ cards. Compared to single-ended ADCs in noisy industrial environments, the true-differential input rejects common-mode interference from motor drives and switching power supplies, simplifying PCB layout.
Recommandé
Optical Module Monitoring (SFP/QSFP DOM)
The MAX1079CTC+T's 1.5 Msps sample rate and true-differential input are well-matched to SFP/QSFP digital optical monitoring (DOM) subsystems that read transmit power, receive power, laser bias current, and temperature. With an external MUX in front of multiple photodiode channels, one MAX 1077/1079 ADC can sequentially digitize all DOM channels at >ksps rates. Compared to slower 12-bit monitoring ADCs, the 1.5 Msps throughput leaves margin for oversampling to improve effective ENOB.
Recommandé
Vibration and Acoustic Monitoring
The MAX1079CTC+T's 1.5 Msps sample rate allows vibration and acoustic monitoring applications to capture signals up to approximately 750 kHz bandwidth (Nyquist), covering most accelerometer and MEMS microphone frequency ranges. The true-differential input rejects ground-loop noise common in industrial vibration installations, while the small WQFN-12 package fits inside compact sensor housings. Compared to lower-speed ADCs that would require higher gain-bandwidth op-amps in front, the 1.5 Msps sample rate allows the analog front-end gain to be moderate, reducing total harmonic distortion.
Recommandé
Medical Sensor Front-End Digitization
The MAX1079CTC+T's true-differential input, internal 2.5V reference, and SPI interface fit medical sensor front-end digitization such as ECG, body-impedance, and pulse-oximetry signal chains. The differential input directly accepts the output of an instrumentation amplifier driving differential ECG signal, while the internal reference removes a noise source from the medical-grade signal chain. Compared to external-reference ADCs that drift with temperature, the factory-trimmed internal reference improves long-term measurement stability.
Recommandé
Consumer Audio Level Metering
The MAX1079CTC+T's 1.5 Msps sample rate covers the full audio band (20 Hz - 20 kHz) with substantial oversampling headroom, allowing consumer audio level-meter and VU-meter designs without aliasing concerns. The internal reference removes a noise source from the audio path, and the small WQFN-12 footprint fits inside compact audio dongles. Compared to audio-specific sigma-delta ADCs, the SAR architecture has no group-delay variation, making it suited to real-time level-metering applications.

Notes de conception
Decouple AVDD and DVDD with a 1 uF ceramic + 0.1 uF ceramic pair placed as close to the IC pins as possible. AVDD and DVDD can typically be tied together to a single 2.7V-3.6V low-noise LDO (such as a TPS7A20 or ADP7104). The internal 2.5V reference requires a 0.1 uF + 1 uF bypass capacitor pair at the REF output pin; insufficient reference decoupling degrades SNR by several dB.
The WQFN-12 package has an exposed thermal pad that MUST be soldered to a ground pour on the top PCB layer to provide both thermal relief and a low-impedance ground return. Use at least 4 thermal vias connecting the top pad to the inner ground plane. The exposed pad is also the primary ground-return path for the analog input currents; without a solid ground connection, input-referred noise increases significantly.
Do not drive the analog inputs (IN+/IN-) beyond AVDD or below AGND - the ESD diodes will conduct and corrupt the conversion. Add external clamp diodes or a buffer amplifier if the input source can exceed the rails. The SHDN pin must be tied high (or driven by a GPIO) for normal operation; leaving SHDN floating puts the part in shutdown. The serial interface timing must respect the 1.5 Msps fSAMPLE limit - higher SPI clock rates will not increase throughput beyond this intrinsic limit.
Route the differential analog inputs (IN+/IN-) as a tightly-coupled differential pair with 100 ohm differential impedance, matching length within 5 mm. Keep the analog input traces away from the SPI bus traces (CS, SCLK, DOUT) to avoid digital-noise coupling. Place a common-mode choke or ferrite bead on the AVDD supply if switching noise from a nearby DC-DC converter is suspected.
