MAX11058ECB+T Présentation
A SAR ADC (Successive Approximation Register Analog-to-Digital Converter) is a category of data converter that resolves a binary output one bit at a time using an internal comparator and a precision DAC. SAR ADCs occupy a middle position in the data-converter hierarchy (SAR ADC -> ADC -> data converter -> signal chain IC -> semiconductor), offering a favorable balance of speed, resolution, and latency compared to delta-sigma and pipeline architectures. Simultaneous-sampling SAR ADCs are widely used in multi-phase power, vibration, and instrumentation systems where the phase relationship between channels must be preserved.
Key features include ±5V bipolar input range (per the MAX11057/58/59 family), single +5V analog supply operation, internal or external reference, low aperture delay, and per-channel ±10 V overvoltage protection. The internal reference option simplifies bill-of-materials, while an external reference mode allows users to tighten absolute accuracy for calibration-critical applications. Throughput of 250 kSPS per channel enables per-channel sampling of signals well above the audio band, supporting industrial control loops and motor-control current sensing. The wide operating temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C supports industrial and instrumentation deployments.
Typical applications include three-phase power-line monitoring, multi-axis vibration analysis, multi-channel data acquisition modules, motor control current sensing, sonar and phased-array beamforming front ends, and industrial process-control front ends. Parallel interface simplifies connection to FPGAs, CPLDs, and microcontrollers with external memory buses.
When designing with this ADC, ensure the external antialiasing RC network matches the 250 kSPS throughput to avoid aliasing high-frequency noise; combined with proper ground-referenced layout of the six analog inputs this preserves the channel-to-channel phase alignment that defines the part's value proposition.

Applications typiques
MAX11058ECB+T convient pour 6 applications: Three-Phase Power Quality Monitoring, Multi-Axis Vibration & Condition Monitoring, Motor Drive Current Sensing, Phased-Array Sonar / Beamforming Front End, Industrial Process Control & Data Acquisition, Power Line Fault Recording / Digital Fault Recorder.
Three-Phase Power Quality Monitoring
The MAX11058ECB+T's six independent simultaneously-sampling channels are purpose-designed to digitize the three phase voltages and three phase currents of a three-phase AC power line. With 250 kSPS per channel, it captures 50 Hz/60 Hz mains and their harmonics well above the 40th harmonic, while the 14-bit resolution delivers ~83 dB dynamic range sufficient for THD analysis. Each channel's 0-5 V input accepts current-shunt or PT/CT secondary outputs directly. The parallel interface feeds an FPGA or DSP for real-time harmonic analysis, RMS calculation, and protective relaying. The exposed-pad TQFP package handles industrial ambient temperatures up to +85 °C, while internal reference operation simplifies BOM for cost-sensitive metering hardware.

Multi-Axis Vibration & Condition Monitoring
Vibration analysis of rotating machinery (beams, shafts, gearboxes) requires capturing multiple accelerometer channels with the exact same time correlation. The MAX11058ECB+T's six simultaneous-sampled inputs, with per-channel track-and-hold apertures aligned to the same clock edge, preserve phase relationships between X/Y/Z axes and additional tachometer or process channels. At 250 kSPS per channel, vibration harmonics well above 100 kHz are captured without per-channel time skew. The 14-bit resolution captures 81 dB dynamic range adequate for envelope analysis and bearing-fault detection. The compact TQFP-EP footprint fits small form-factor wireless sensor nodes, while the parallel interface allows direct connection to an FPGA for FFT and demodulation processing.
Recommandé
Motor Drive Current Sensing
Field-oriented control (FOC) of three-phase PMSM or BLDC motors requires simultaneous sampling of the three phase currents at the PWM switching frequency (often 10-50 kHz). The MAX11058ECB+T provides three dedicated high-speed simultaneously-sampled channels for phase currents, plus three additional channels for DC-link voltage, motor temperature, and resolver feedback. 250 kSPS per channel gives 5-25x oversampling of the PWM signal for high-quality current reconstruction. The internal or external reference option allows designers to share a system-wide precision reference for torque-matched and telemetry-matched multi-axis control. The wide industrial temperature range supports under-hood automotive and industrial inverter deployments.
Recommandé
Phased-Array Sonar / Beamforming Front End
Phased-array sonar and ultrasound beamforming front ends require capturing dozens of hydrophone or transducer channels at high sample rates with strict inter-channel phase coherence. The MAX11058ECB+T, combined with multiple chips time-synchronized via the CONV pin, builds scalable 6N-channel arrays. At 250 kSPS per channel with simultaneous sampling, hydrophone signals up to 100 kHz are fully Nyquist-sampled. The 14-bit dynamic range (~81 dB) suits long-range passive sonar, while the parallel digital interface supports high-throughput beamformer ASICs. The exposed-pad TQFP package provides the thermal headroom and low-noise grounding required for low-SNR acoustic sensing in marine and biomedical imaging.

Industrial Process Control & Data Acquisition
Multi-channel industrial data-acquisition systems (DCS) digitize 4-20 mA or 0-10 V process variables from temperature, pressure, flow, and level transmitters. The MAX11058ECB+T handles six channels simultaneously at 250 kSPS per channel, well above the bandwidth needed for process loop monitoring while supporting fast safety shutoff. The 0-5 V analog input range directly accepts 0-10 V process signals after a resistor-divider scaling, while the 14-bit resolution delivers ~0.6 mV LSB for tight control-loop feedback. The exposed-pad TQFP-EP package on a 4-layer industrial PCB dissipates heat cleanly at industrial -40 °C to +85 °C ambient, with the parallel interface feeding a microcontroller or PLC backplane.
Recommandé
Power Line Fault Recording / Digital Fault Recorder
Digital fault recorders (DFR) capture transient waveforms on power systems for post-event analysis. The MAX11058ECB+T captures six channels simultaneously at 250 kSPS per channel, allowing sampling of 60 Hz mains at >4,000 samples per cycle for accurate high-frequency transient capture including lightning strikes, switching surges, and breaker restrikes. The simultaneous sampling ensures pre-fault and post-fault waveforms across all phases can be aligned precisely for forensic analysis. The parallel digital output allows direct streaming to a circular FIFO or external DDR buffer, while the 14-bit resolution is sufficient for capturing switching transients with adequate dynamic range.

Notes de conception
The exposed thermal pad (pin 65) MUST be soldered to a continuous copper pour on the top layer, stitched with multiple vias to an inner analog ground plane. Per the Maxim datasheet, a 4-layer PCB with dedicated analog and digital ground planes tied together only at the AGND pin is required to achieve the datasheet's 1.5 LSB INL and 71 dB SINAD. Place all six analog input RC antialiasing filter components within 5 mm of the input pins to minimize trace noise pickup; the 0.1 µF X7R bypass capacitor for the AVDD supply must be within 2 mm of pin 7.
Estimated: Driving the analog inputs with source impedances greater than 1 kΩ degrades the simultaneous-sampling aperture match across the six channels because of track-and-hold settling differences. If your transducer exceeds 1 kΩ output impedance, buffer each channel with a low-offset op-amp (such as the AD8628 or MAX4238) within 10 mm of the AINx pins. Also note that the internal reference (4.096 V) limits full-scale input to ~5 V; for ±5 V bipolar inputs you must use the external reference mode per the datasheet's bipolar configuration section, or scale input signals externally to within 0-5 V.
The parallel digital outputs D0-D13 toggle simultaneously on the rising edge of RD, generating a fast current transient that can couple into the analog section if the digital return path is not isolated. Per Maxim's application note, route digital outputs over a digital ground island with a ferrite bead or 10 Ω resistor between AGND and DGND at the chip, and use a 0.1 µF + 10 µF bypass combination on the DVDD pin. For systems with >50 MHz clock-to-data frequencies, source-series-terminate each parallel output with 22-33 Ω to control the rising-edge di/dt and minimize digital-to-analog crosstalk.
