MAX1165BEUI+ Présentation
An SAR ADC is a type of data converter that uses a successive-approximation algorithm to convert an analog input voltage to a digital code one bit at a time using a binary-search process across an internal DAC and comparator. SAR ADCs sit in the broader data-converter hierarchy: ADC -> data converter -> mixed-signal IC -> semiconductor. They are prized for their low latency, deterministic acquisition, and excellent DC accuracy, making them ideal for multiplexed data-acquisition systems, instrumentation, and industrial process control.
Key features of the MAX1165BEUI+ include a 16-bit resolution with no missing codes, ±1 LSB INL (max), ±1 LSB DNL (max), a single +5V analog supply, an analog input range of 0V to VREF, and a parallel 16-bit output bus. The device draws only 4.5 mA (typ) at 200 ksps and drops to 1 µA (typ) in power-down mode, enabling battery-friendly designs. The integrated 4.096V reference eliminates an external component in many designs, while the factory-trimmed internal oscillator removes the need for an external clock source.
Architecturally, the MAX1165BEUI+ combines a capacitive-charge-distribution DAC, a high-bandwidth comparator, a successive-approximation register, and a precision bandgap reference. The track-and-hold amplifier acquires the input in 1.5 clock cycles, and the conversion completes in 16 clocks, giving a deterministic latency suitable for closed-loop control. The internal reference achieves ±0.5% initial accuracy and 30 ppm/C drift.
Typical applications include multi-channel data-acquisition systems, pen digitizers, portable instrumentation, medical instrumentation, process control, and signal monitoring. The wide parallel bus enables direct connection to microcontrollers and DSPs without glue logic.
When designing with this device, ensure the analog input is buffered if its source impedance exceeds 1 kΩ to avoid conversion errors. Place the bypass capacitors (10 µF tantalum + 0.1 µF ceramic) as close to AVDD and DVDD as possible, and keep analog and digital grounds separated to minimize digital-induced noise on the analog input.

Applications typiques
MAX1165BEUI+ convient pour 6 applications: Multi-Channel Data-Acquisition Systems, Pen Digitizers and Touchscreen Controllers, Portable Instrumentation, Medical Instrumentation, Process Control, Signal Monitoring and Vibration Analysis.
Multi-Channel Data-Acquisition Systems
The MAX1165BEUI+'s 16-bit resolution and 200 ksps throughput make it ideal for multiplexed data-acquisition (DAQ) systems digitizing multiple sensor channels. The 16-bit-wide parallel interface enables direct connection to microcontrollers and DSPs without glue logic, reducing latency in real-time acquisition. Its internal 4.096V reference eliminates an external component while providing sufficient full-scale range for transducer outputs. The 1 µA power-down current enables battery-friendly portable DAQs.
Recommandé
Pen Digitizers and Touchscreen Controllers
The MAX1165BEUI+ is well-suited for pen-digitizer front-end digitizers because of its 200 ksps throughput, which easily captures stylus movement at typical 100-1000 Hz sampling rates. The 16-bit resolution provides 65,536 code levels - enough to detect sub-millimeter stylus position over a typical A4-sized tablet area. The internal 4.096V reference provides a stable full-scale range while the TSSOP-28 package supports compact mobile form factors.
Recommandé
Portable Instrumentation
Battery-powered portable instruments benefit from the MAX1165BEUI+'s 4.5 mA active current at 200 ksps and 1 µA power-down current. The low duty-cycle power-down feature extends battery life by allowing the ADC to idle between conversions. Its internal reference eliminates the standby current of an external reference, and the TSSOP-28 package minimizes PCB footprint for handheld designs like multimeters and field instruments.
Recommandé
Medical Instrumentation
The MAX1165BEUI+'s 16-bit resolution with no missing codes supports medical instrumentation requiring high DC accuracy, such as patient monitoring (ECG, SpO2) and diagnostic equipment. The internal 4.096V reference provides a stable full-scale range that simplifies calibration. The TSSOP-28 footprint enables compact patient-worn designs, while the SAR architecture's deterministic latency is essential for synchronized measurements across multiple physiological channels.
Recommandé
Process Control
Industrial process control systems digitizing 4-20 mA or 0-10V transducer signals benefit from the MAX1165BEUI+'s 16-bit resolution, which provides 65,536 codes over a typical 10V span - giving 153 µV resolution per code, sufficient for closed-loop control precision. The 200 ksps throughput handles fast process variable sampling, and the internal 4.096V reference simplifies calibration. The TSSOP-28 package fits standard industrial control PCB formats.
Recommandé
Signal Monitoring and Vibration Analysis
The MAX1165BEUI+'s 200 ksps sample rate enables capture of vibration signals up to 100 kHz (above the Nyquist frequency), supporting vibration analysis and structural health monitoring. The 16-bit dynamic range provides better than 96 dB SNR, sufficient for distinguishing mechanical faults from background noise. The TSSOP-28 footprint enables compact sensor-pod mounting, while the low power-down current allows battery-powered wireless sensor nodes to sample periodically.

Notes de conception
Power the MAX1165BEUI+ from a clean +5V analog supply. Place a 10 µF tantalum capacitor and a 0.1 µF ceramic capacitor as close as possible to the AVDD pin, with a separate 0.1 µF ceramic on DVDD. Use separate analog and digital ground planes joined at a single point near the ADC to minimize digital switching noise coupling into the analog input.
Buffer the analog input if the source impedance exceeds 1 kΩ. The MAX1165BEUI+ samples the input through a switched-capacitor track-and-hold; high source impedance causes gain error and non-linear settling. A low-noise op-amp buffer such as the MAX4239 placed within 1 inch of the AIN pin is recommended for source impedances above 1 kΩ.
Route the parallel D0-D15 data bus away from analog traces to avoid digital-to-analog coupling. Keep the analog input trace short and guarded with AGND on both sides. Place the reference bypass capacitor (4.7 µF tantalum + 0.1 µF ceramic) directly on the REF pin to filter reference noise.
Do not exceed the analog input range of 0 V to VREF. Driving the input below 0 V or above VREF causes ESD diode conduction and corrupts the conversion. Use a clamp circuit or input protection resistor if over-voltage transients are possible. Tie the CONVST pin low when not in use to avoid spurious conversions.
