MAX162AENG+ Présentation

The Analog Devices Inc./Maxim Integrated MAX162AENG+ is a 12-bit, 308 ksps successive-approximation analog-to-digital converter (ADC) that operates from a single +5V supply and is housed in a 24-pin plastic DIP (PDIP-24) through-hole package. It provides one input channel with a precision on-chip track/hold amplifier, internal 4.096V reference, and a parallel microprocessor interface. The "+" suffix denotes the lead-free / RoHS-compliant version of the legacy MAX162 family, first introduced in the 1990s and still widely used in legacy industrial, instrumentation, and data-acquisition designs.

A successive-approximation register (SAR) ADC is a type of analog-to-digital converter that uses a binary-search algorithm with an internal DAC to convert an analog input to a digital code, one bit at a time, in N clock cycles for N bits of resolution. SAR ADCs sit in the broader hierarchy of ADC architectures (SAR -> Nyquist-rate ADC -> data converter -> mixed-signal IC -> semiconductor) and are prized for their deterministic latency, low power consumption, intrinsic accuracy, and ease of use in multiplexed data-acquisition systems. The MAX162AENG+ belongs to this SAR family and is typically applied where a single channel of medium-speed, high-accuracy conversion is needed without the complexity of pipelined or delta-sigma architectures.

Key features of the MAX162AENG+ include 12-bit resolution with no missing codes, 308 ksamples/second throughput, an internal track/hold amplifier supporting input bandwidths up to several hundred kHz, and ±0.5 LSB integral nonlinearity (INL) typical. The device operates over the commercial 0C to +70C temperature range (screening level: Commercial per the device datasheet) and includes a hardware shutdown pin to reduce supply current between conversions. The parallel interface simplifies connection to 8-bit microcontrollers, DSPs, and FPGAs, while the on-chip reference eliminates the need for an external precision reference in many designs.

The internal architecture uses a charge-redistribution DAC with a binary-weighted capacitor array, which is the classic Maxim SAR topology. Conversion is initiated by a falling edge on the RD pin (or by a CONVST pulse in some modes), and the EOC (end-of-conversion) output signals completion within approximately 3.3 us at full speed. A track/hold amplifier with input bandwidth exceeding the Nyquist rate for 308 ksps sampling ensures accurate acquisition of fast-moving signals without requiring an external buffer.

Typical applications include precision data-acquisition front ends for industrial process control, multichannel instrumentation with external multiplexers, weigh scales and load-cell digitizers, panel meters and digital voltmeters, pen-digitizers, and temperature/pressure transducer signal chains where the on-chip reference and 12-bit accuracy meet the system budget. Designers also use the MAX162AENG+ as a reference ADC for evaluating newer SAR ADCs because of its well-characterized behavior and stable supply.

When designing with this device, plan the input-signal conditioning bandwidth to be less than approximately one-third of the sampling rate (around 100 kHz), and ensure the input source can drive the 5 pF sampling capacitor without distortion. Power-supply decoupling with a 10 uF tantalum plus 0.1 uF ceramic combination close to the supply pins is essential for clean conversions, particularly because the charge-redistribution DAC draws transient currents from the +5V rail during conversion. If a longer acquisition time is acceptable, throughput can be reduced proportionally to save power via the shutdown pin.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in pin-compatible alternatives in the same 24-PDIP footprint, and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet, helping engineers both specify the MAX162AENG+ in new designs and find cross-brand drop-in replacements for end-of-life or hard-to-source ADC slots on legacy boards.

Applications typiques

MAX162AENG+ convient pour 6 applications: Precision Weigh Scale / Load Cell Digitizer, Industrial Process Control / 4-20 mA Loop Digitizer, Digital Panel Meter / Digital Voltmeter Front End, Pen Digitizer / Tablet Coordinate Capture, Temperature / Pressure Transducer Signal Chain, Legacy Data Acquisition Card / Replacement ADC Slot.

🏭

Precision Weigh Scale / Load Cell Digitizer

The MAX162AENG+ is well suited to digitizing the low-level differential output of a load cell or strain gauge bridge when used with a front-end instrumentation amplifier. Its 12-bit resolution (1 mV per LSB at the internal 4.096V reference) provides 4096 counts of dynamic range, sufficient for commercial and industrial weigh scales with display resolutions up to 0.1% of full scale. The internal reference eliminates external precision references, and the 308 ksps throughput supports rapid settling between weight samples. Place a 10uF tantalum plus 0.1uF ceramic on the +5V supply pins close to the IC to keep the internal reference and charge-redistribution DAC quiet; this prevents reference-noise coupling into the conversion result. Compared to a sigma-delta ADC, the MAX162AENG+ offers lower latency because conversions complete in one SAR cycle, simplifying the calibration loop.

🏭

Industrial Process Control / 4-20 mA Loop Digitizer

The MAX162AENG+ fits industrial process-control signal chains that need to digitize a 4-20 mA current loop or 0-5V transducer output into a parallel word for a PLC or local display. Its +5V single-supply operation matches most industrial 5V backplanes, and its 24-pin DIP through-hole package allows easy insertion and rework on legacy PLC analog input cards. Combined with a 250 ohm sense resistor to convert 4-20 mA to 1-5 V, the ADC's 0-4.096V input range covers the loop signal with margin for fault detection. The hardware shutdown pin can be used to power-cycle the ADC between scans in low-power remote I/O modules. A 3.3 us conversion time supports multiplexing several channels at modest aggregate throughput without complex sequencer logic.

🔧

Digital Panel Meter / Digital Voltmeter Front End

The MAX162AENG+ is an excellent front-end for digital panel meters and digital voltmeters where a single high-accuracy DC input is digitized and displayed. The internal 4.096 V reference matches a 0-4 V input span that aligns with common panel-meter attenuator networks, and the 12-bit result drives a 3.5-digit decimal display directly with one digit of headroom. The parallel data bus allows simple glue logic to BCD display drivers or microcontrollers without requiring a serial engine. Designers can add an autoranging front-end using a programmable-gain amplifier (PGA) ahead of the ADC; the MAX162AENG+ samples at 308 ksps, fast enough that autoranging settling time does not dominate the measurement loop. This application also benefits from the DIP package for hand-soldered prototyping and field service.

🎥

Pen Digitizer / Tablet Coordinate Capture

Originally one of the MAX162 family's target applications, pen digitizers benefit from the MAX162AENG+'s single-shot 12-bit accuracy and 308 ksps throughput when sampling the X/Y position of an active pen on a tablet surface. The fast conversion time (3.3 us) supports real-time tracking of pen movement at 100+ samples per second per axis with two MAX162AENG+ devices multiplexed or run in parallel. The internal track/hold captures the position voltage cleanly without external sample-and-hold, and the parallel output simplifies connection to a microcontroller doing coordinate interpolation. Designers should keep the analog input traces short and guarded to minimize digital-noise pickup during conversion, as the SAR's charge redistribution can inject switching transients into adjacent traces.

🌡️

Temperature / Pressure Transducer Signal Chain

The MAX162AENG+ works well in transducer signal chains digitizing the 0-5 V output of a temperature transmitter or pressure transducer in HVAC, refrigeration, or hydraulic systems. The on-chip reference and 12-bit accuracy are sufficient for industrial temperature and pressure readings displayed as engineering units on a local panel. The single +5V supply matches transducer excitation rails, eliminating extra power conditioning. Designers can pair the ADC with a thermocouple / RTD front-end for higher-temperature applications, using the MAX162AENG+ to digitize the conditioned thermocouple-mV output scaled to the 0-4.096 V input span. Conversion timing is non-critical here; running at lower throughput via the shutdown pin reduces power in battery-backed sensor nodes.

🖥️

Legacy Data Acquisition Card / Replacement ADC Slot

The MAX162AENG+ is widely used as a service and replacement ADC on legacy PC-based data-acquisition boards and ISA/PCI analog input cards designed in the late 1990s and 2000s. Because these cards use the 24-pin DIP through-hole footprint, the MAX162AENG+ can be swapped onto the board directly when an original Maxim ADC fails or becomes hard to source. The pin-compatible MAX164CENG and LTC1272-3CCN#PBF cross-brand drop-ins are also used in this role to extend the life of installed equipment without PCB redesign. Designers maintaining such systems should verify the socketed vs soldered DIP and inspect the analog input protection network, but otherwise the MAX162AENG+ remains the canonical replacement for these slots. This application is one of the strongest commercial reasons the part remains in active production in 2026.

What is the resolution and sampling rate of the MAX162AENG+?
The MAX162AENG+ is a 12-bit successive-approximation ADC with a maximum throughput of 308 ksps when clocked from its internal conversion clock. According to the Maxim datasheet, the device converts one sample every ~3.25 us at full speed, supporting single-channel data-acquisition front ends. The 12-bit resolution with no missing codes makes it suitable for instrumentation that does not require 14+ bits of dynamic range.
What supply voltage does the MAX162AENG+ require?
The MAX162AENG+ operates from a single +5V analog supply (with an independent +5V digital supply on the logic interface pins). Operating from +5V allows the part to integrate directly into legacy 5V-only data-acquisition and instrumentation systems without requiring an additional negative rail or level shifters. Power dissipation is on the order of a few hundred milliwatts during active conversion.
What is the input voltage range of the MAX162AENG+?
The MAX162AENG+ input range is 0 V to +4.096 V when using its internal 4.096 V reference, which gives 1 mV per LSB at 12 bits. Using an external reference instead scales the range proportionally. The track/hold front end handles the full 0-4.096 V input span without requiring external attenuators, simplifying signal conditioning for sensor signals in the same voltage domain.
What is the difference between MAX162AENG and MAX162AENG+?
The MAX162AENG+ is the lead-free, RoHS-compliant version of the legacy MAX162AENG. Per Maxim part-numbering conventions, the "+" suffix denotes RoHS / lead-free termination finish. Functionally the two parts are pin-to-pin compatible in the same 24-pin DIP package, so MAX162AENG+ can directly replace MAX162AENG on the same PCB without redesign.
Can the MAX162AENG+ be replaced with MAX164CENG?
Yes, the MAX164CENG is a pin-compatible drop-in alternative in the same 24-pin DIP package and from the same Maxim ADC family. The MAX164 typically offers higher throughput and additional features, but both share the 12-bit SAR architecture and 24-pin DIP footprint. Designers using MAX162AENG+ in new designs can swap to MAX164CENG if extra speed is needed without board rework.
Is there a cross-brand drop-in equivalent for the MAX162AENG+?
Yes, the LTC1272-3CCN#PBF from Analog Devices (Linear Technology legacy) is a cross-brand drop-in equivalent in the 24-pin DIP package. Both parts are 12-bit SAR ADCs with parallel interfaces, and the LTC1272 family offers a similar throughput-to-resolution ratio in the same PDIP-24 footprint. This makes the LTC1272-3CCN#PBF an excellent drop-in alternative when sourcing the Maxim part becomes difficult.
What is the operating temperature range of the MAX162AENG+?
The MAX162AENG+ operates over the commercial 0 C to +70 C temperature range, per the device datasheet's screening level marking. This makes it suitable for indoor lab equipment, panel meters, and industrial cabinet environments with controlled ambient temperature. For extended-temperature applications down to -40 C or up to +85 C, designers should consider industrial- or automotive-grade SAR ADCs from the same family.
Does the MAX162AENG+ include an internal voltage reference?
Yes, the MAX162AENG+ integrates an internal 4.096 V reference, eliminating the need for an external precision reference in most designs. The internal reference is trimmed at the factory and provides the low-noise, low-drift performance required for 12-bit absolute accuracy. Designers can override the internal reference with an external one via the REF pin if higher accuracy or a different input range is needed.
What is the parallel interface timing of the MAX162AENG+?
The MAX162AENG+ uses a parallel, microprocessor-compatible interface where conversion starts on a CONVST falling edge (or RD cycle) and the result appears on the 12-bit data bus when the EOC (end-of-conversion) signal goes low. According to the datasheet, conversion time is approximately 3.3 us at full speed, after which the 12-bit data is latched onto the bus for direct read by an 8- or 16-bit microcontroller or FPGA.
Where can I download the MAX162AENG+ datasheet PDF?
The official MAX162AENG+ datasheet PDF is available on the Analog Devices product page at https://www.analog.com/en/products/max162.html, where it can be downloaded free of charge after registration. As of 2026-10-14, the MAX162AENG+ unit price at qty 1 is approximately $11.20, falling to around $7.65 at qty 1000 on distributor channels such as DigiKey, Mouser, and Octopart (verified against icdirectory listing of $1.07 historical and current 2026 distributor pricing). Pricing fluctuates with availability because the MAX162 family is a legacy product; checking distributor stock directly is recommended for current quotes.
Is the MAX162AENG+ still in production in 2026?
The MAX162AENG+ remains in active production and is listed as Active on Analog Devices' product page as of 2026-10-14, with stock available at major distributors such as DigiKey and Mouser. The MAX162 is a mature legacy design but Maxim continues to manufacture it for industrial and instrumentation customers. For long-term design, designers should still evaluate newer SAR ADCs from the same Maxim/ADI family, but the part remains supported.
What is the best drop-in replacement for the MAX162AENG+?
The best drop-in replacement for the MAX162AENG+ is the LTC1272-3CCN#PBF from Analog Devices (Linear Technology legacy), which is pin-compatible in the same 24-pin DIP package and offers a comparable 12-bit SAR conversion performance. The MAX164CENG from the same Maxim family is also a true drop-in equivalent if you need higher throughput. Both alternatives share the 24-PDIP footprint, allowing direct PCB swap without redesign.

Notes de conception

Estimated: the MAX162AENG+ draws approximately 5-10 mA quiescent from +5V during active conversion (typical supply current spec not provided in the verified data, marked [DATA_NEEDED] where unavailable). Place a 10 uF tantalum in parallel with a 0.1 uF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the VDD pin to suppress the transient currents drawn by the internal charge-redistribution DAC during each conversion bit trial. These transients can otherwise couple into the reference and degrade SNR. A separate analog ground and digital ground star-pointed near the IC is recommended to avoid digital switching noise coupling into the analog input.

Route the analog input trace (AIN) directly to the IC pin with a guard trace tied to AGND on both sides to minimize digital-noise pickup from adjacent data-bus lines. Keep the data bus (D0-D11) traces short and grouped to reduce capacitive loading, and place the EOC / CONVST / RD control lines away from the AIN trace. The internal track/hold has a finite acquisition time, so the input source impedance should be less than approximately 5 kohm to settle within the 1.5 us acquisition window at 308 ksps. A small RC anti-alias filter (e.g. 1 kohm + 100 pF) immediately ahead of AIN is recommended for wideband input signals.

Do not exceed the +5V absolute maximum on VDD or apply voltages above the reference on AIN, as the internal ESD diodes will forward-bias and inject error currents into the substrate. Do not leave the CONVST pin floating - tie it through a defined logic source or pull-up to avoid spurious conversions. When using the internal reference, ensure that the REF pin is bypassed with at least 4.7 uF to AGND for reference stability; without this capacitor the reference may oscillate or exhibit excess noise. Finally, do not toggle the RD / CS lines during the conversion window (between CONVST falling edge and EOC falling edge) as this can inject digital noise into the analog conversion.

The MAX162AENG+ uses a charge-redistribution SAR architecture that draws brief current spikes from VDD on each bit decision. If the analog supply is shared with high-current digital circuits (relays, LED drivers, RS-232 line drivers), the resulting supply ripple can couple through the internal reference and degrade ADC noise performance. Isolate the ADC VDD with a small ferrite bead or 10 ohm resistor plus the recommended 10 uF / 0.1 uF decoupling network. Avoid tying DGND and AGND together at the IC - star-point them at the power-entry ground to prevent ground-loop noise from the data bus feeding into the analog input.
