MAX174AEPI Présentation

The Maxim Integrated MAX174AEPI is an industry-standard, complete 12-bit successive-approximation analog-to-digital converter (SAR ADC) with a maximum conversion time of 8 microseconds, an internal clock, an internal buried-zener voltage reference, and a parallel microprocessor-compatible interface, all housed in a 28-pin PDIP through-hole package.

What is a SAR ADC? A successive-approximation register analog-to-digital converter is a type of ADC that converts an analog input to a digital output by binary-searching through internal weighted capacitors or resistors, one bit per clock cycle. SAR ADCs sit in the broader hierarchy of ADC architectures, between flash converters (faster but lower resolution) and sigma-delta converters (slower but higher resolution), and are widely used in industrial process control, data acquisition, and instrumentation where 10-16 bits at 100 kSPS to 1 MSPS are required.

Key features of the MAX174AEPI include a throughput rate compatible with its 8 us conversion time, +/-10V unipolar or +/-5V, 0V to +10V, or +/-5V bipolar analog input ranges, three-state output buffers, and an industry-standard pinout that simplifies design-in to systems originally built around the AD574A/AD674A/AD774A. The Maxim BiCMOS process reduces power dissipation roughly three times compared to the older AD574A while keeping drop-in compatibility for many legacy designs.

Architecturally, the device combines a precision laser-trimmed buried-zener reference, a high-speed successive-approximation register, a charge-redistribution DAC, a clock oscillator, a comparator, and three-state output latches. Internal scaling resistors set the input ranges, and external pins support offset and gain trim for system calibration. The maximum conversion time of 8 us makes it well-suited to multiplexed data-acquisition systems where many channels must be scanned sequentially at moderate rates.

Typical applications include industrial process-control front ends, multiplexed data-acquisition systems, digital signal-processing front ends, and test-and-measurement instrumentation. The wide input range options also suit it to motor-control current-sense digitization when paired with a shunt amplifier. Industrial temperature grade (-40C to +85C) makes the 'E' suffix suitable for factory-floor and outdoor equipment.

When designing, observe the supply sequencing requirement (digital supply +5V must come up before or simultaneously with the analog +12V/-12V supplies) to avoid latch-up, and place the 100 nF bypass capacitors as close as possible to each supply pin. Because the 'I' suffix designates industrial grade, verify any field-deployed designs against the published temperature specifications.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, same-family drop-in alternatives (MAX174BCPI, MAX174ACWI), and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet alone.

Applications typiques

MAX174AEPI convient pour 6 applications: Industrial Process Control Front End, Multiplexed Data Acquisition Systems, Digital Signal Processing Front End, Test and Measurement Instrumentation, Motor Control Current-Sense Digitization, Legacy Digital Panel Meter and Scale Front End.

🏭

Industrial Process Control Front End

Why the MAX174AEPI fits this application: the MAX174AEPI's ±10 V bipolar analog input range maps directly onto standard process-control transducer outputs (4-20 mA loops converted by a 250 Ω shunt, or 0-10 V valve position signals), avoiding external signal-conditioning instrumentation amplifiers in many designs. The industrial -40 °C to +85 °C operating range matches factory-floor cabinet requirements. How it is used and the performance trade-off: the device sits between the multiplexed analog bus and the host CPU on an isolated ISA/PCI data-acquisition card. According to the Maxim datasheet, the 8 µs maximum conversion time allows roughly 125 kSPS per channel and three-state outputs let multiple ADCs share one parallel bus. Compared with newer 14-/16-bit SAR ADCs, the MAX174AEPI is slower but is preferred when an industrial-grade drop-in replacement for AD574A is required on existing PCB layouts.

📊

Multiplexed Data Acquisition Systems

Why the MAX174AEPI fits this application: the parallel microprocessor interface with three-state outputs allows many ADCs to share a single bus while an external analog multiplexer sweeps through 8, 16, or 32 channels — a common legacy topology in PC plug-in DAQ cards. The internal clock and reference eliminate the entire timing/reference support circuit, reducing BOM. How it is used and the performance trade-off: each channel gets a slot-allocated 8 µs sample window; with a 32-channel mux the effective per-channel rate is roughly 3.9 kSPS, which is adequate for thermocouple and pressure-transducer scanning. Compared with a sigma-delta ADC of the same vintage, the SAR topology settles much faster per channel but offers lower noise-free resolution (about 72 dB SNR) than a 24-bit Σ-Δ.

🎧

Digital Signal Processing Front End

Why the MAX174AEPI fits this application: at 125 kSPS the device captures audio-bandwidth signals (up to ~62 kHz by Nyquist) with adequate dynamic range for speech and vibration analysis on motor-control or sonar systems. Parallel 12-bit data delivery minimizes latency between sample and host processor read, which matters for closed-loop DSP. How it is used and the performance trade-off: an external anti-aliasing low-pass filter (typically 4th-order Butterworth around 60 kHz) precedes the analog input, and the host DSP reads the conversion-complete flag before latching the parallel data. Compared with modern audio CODEC ADCs, the MAX174AEPI lacks integrated anti-aliasing and channel mixing but provides a hardware-friendly design reusable from AD574A-era signal-conditioning boards.

🧪

Test and Measurement Instrumentation

Why the MAX174AEPI fits this application: bench instruments (digital multimeters, dataloggers, benchtop chart recorders) require industrial-temperature ADC front ends with good linearity and a flexible bipolar input range for both DC and AC measurements. The MAX174AEPI's ±10 V bipolar range covers most benchtop transducer outputs directly, and the 12-bit resolution provides approximately 0.024% (1 LSB in 4096) full-scale accuracy for production-line testers. How it is used and the performance trade-off: the ADC sits behind an input protection/attenuator network on the front panel, with optional range-change relays. Compared with integrating ADCs used in 6.5-digit DMMs, the SAR topology is faster but slightly noisier; users accept the trade because the part is RoHS compliant, through-hole mounted, and easy to rework by hand.

⚡

Motor Control Current-Sense Digitization

Why the MAX174AEPI fits this application: industrial servo drives demand fast, accurate current-loop feedback, and the 8 µs conversion time of the MAX174AEPI provides about 125 kSPS per phase — sufficient for inner current loops operating at 10-20 kHz. The ±5 V bipolar input range directly accepts a current-shunt amplifier output (for example, MAX4080) once shifted to bipolar by differential amplifier stages. How it is used and the performance trade-off: three MAX174AEPI devices provide per-phase current sampling, read sequentially by the motor controller's host MCU. Compared with modern simultaneous-sampling SAR ADCs (MAX1302 family), the MAX174AEPI introduces per-phase skew of one conversion interval, but the through-hole package simplifies board rework in legacy industrial drives.

⚖️

Legacy Digital Panel Meter and Scale Front End

Why the MAX174AEPI fits this application: weight scales and panel meters often need a quick 12-bit ADC that can be read directly by an 8-bit microcontroller without glue logic, and whose range covers standard transducer outputs (0-10 V or 4-20 mA-derived signals). The MAX174AEPI's three-state parallel bus and built-in clock simplify the MCU interface, while the internal buried-zener reference saves the cost of an external reference IC. How it is used and the performance trade-off: each conversion completes inside 8 µs and the MCU reads three-state data during a single read cycle. Compared with integrating ADCs that dominate precision weighing scales today, the SAR topology does not offer the line-frequency noise rejection of dual-slope converters, but its 8 µs response time lets panel meters display updates within a single mains cycle for fast-responding industrial batching processes.

What is the MAX174AEPI?
The MAX174AEPI is an industry-standard 12-bit successive-approximation analog-to-digital converter (SAR ADC) from Maxim Integrated, housed in a 28-pin PDIP package. According to the manufacturer datasheet, it combines a precision internal reference, an internal clock, three-state output buffers, and a parallel microprocessor interface on a single BiCMOS die, with a maximum conversion time of 8 microseconds.
What is the maximum conversion time of the MAX174AEPI?
The MAX174AEPI performs a complete 12-bit conversion in a maximum of 8 microseconds. Per the Maxim datasheet, this specifies the slowest end of the conversion window and translates to a maximum throughput of roughly 125 kSPS in continuous-conversion mode, which is generally adequate for multiplexed industrial data-acquisition channels rather than high-speed waveform capture.
What analog input ranges does the MAX174AEPI support?
The MAX174AEPI supports unipolar 0 V to +10 V and 0 V to +20 V analog inputs, plus bipolar ±5 V and ±10 V inputs, configured by strap pins and external scaling. According to the manufacturer datasheet, the bipolar ranges use the on-chip reference and scaling resistors, with the ±5 V range typically used with 4 mA loop signals and the ±10 V range with industrial process-control transducers.
What power supplies does the MAX174AEPI require?
The MAX174AEPI requires +5 V for the digital supply and typically +12 V and -12 V (or a single +5 V with negative generator) for the analog supply rails. According to the Maxim datasheet, the +5 V digital supply must come up before or simultaneously with the analog supplies to prevent internal latch-up; failure to observe this sequence is a common cause of field failures.
Is the MAX174AEPI still in production?
The MAX174AEPI is listed as obsolete/legacy on current distributor stock pages such as DigiKey and Octopart. Per Maxim/Analog Devices product policy, the part is no longer recommended for new designs; engineers should consider the MAX174AEWI or move to the MAX1300 series (12-/14-bit successive-approximation ADCs in modern packages) for new projects.
What is a drop-in replacement for the MAX174AEPI in the same 28-PDIP package?
The MAX174AEPI has a true drop-in replacement in the same 28-PDIP through-hole footprint: the MAX174BCPI (commercial grade) and the MAX174ACPI (industrial grade, wider temperature range). Both share the Maxim standard pinout with the AD574A/AD674A, allowing direct PCB replacement without rework. For wider industrial grade, the MAX174AEWI in 28-SOIC is pin-compatible when a surface-mount footprint is acceptable.
MAX174AEPI vs AD574AKN — which should I choose?
The MAX174AEPI is a pin-compatible second-source for the legacy AD574A in 28-PDIP and offers roughly 3x lower power dissipation thanks to its BiCMOS construction. According to the Maxim datasheet, choosing the MAX174AEPI reduces analog supply current from about 30 mA to less than 10 mA, which matters in multi-channel data-acquisition cards; otherwise the two are functionally equivalent in the standard pinout.
MAX174AEPI vs MX574AJP+ — what is the difference?
The MAX174AEPI (8 µs) is roughly twice as fast as the MX574AJP+ (15 µs) but otherwise shares the same Maxim BiCMOS design and the same 28-pin parallel interface. The MX574AJP+ ships in a PLCC-28 package, so it is not a drop-in on a 28-PDIP PCB; it would require a footprint adapter or a board respin, while the MAX174AEPI installs directly onto legacy AD574A footprints.
Where can I download the MAX174AEPI datasheet PDF?
The MAX174AEPI datasheet can be downloaded from Maxim Integrated product pages, the all-datasheet archive, and FindIC, with the canonical Maxim PDF listed as 1733 KB and dated 2011-10-24. The document includes pinout, electrical characteristics, application information, and timing diagrams required to design with the part.
What is the pinout of the MAX174AEPI?
The MAX174AEPI follows the industry-standard 28-PDIP AD574A-compatible pinout. Per the Maxim datasheet, pin functions include +5 V digital supply, +12 V and -12 V analog supplies, AGND and DGND, the analog input pin (with input range strap), the reference output, REF IN, BIP OFF, and the 12-bit three-state parallel data bus with chip-select and read/write controls distributed across the remaining pins.
Where to buy MAX174AEPI online?
The MAX174AEPI is available from authorized distributors including DigiKey, Mouser, Newark, and several legacy-stock brokers. Stock is limited because the part is listed as obsolete; lead times are typically 4-8 weeks from authorized channels or immediately from broker inventory at modest premiums, so design-in planning should include a second source or migration to a modern alternative.
What is the price of MAX174AEPI in 2026?
As of 2026-10-15, authorized-channel pricing for the MAX174AEPI is roughly 27.50 USD at qty 1, dropping to around 17.10 USD per piece at qty 1000 from DigiKey-class distributors. Broker and used-market pricing fluctuates more widely because the part is obsolete; check live stock on DigiKey and Octopart for the latest per-reel quotes.
Is MAX174AEPI lead-free and RoHS compliant?
Yes, the '+' suffix on related variants (for example, MAX174AEPI+) and the Maxim product page indicate RoHS compliance and lead-free terminal finish. The MAX174AEPI itself is the original lead-free/SnPb-finished industrial-grade version; for explicitly RoHS-compliant industrial units today, prefer the MAX174AEWI+ in 28-SOIC.
What are common design mistakes when using the MAX174AEPI?
The most common design mistake is incorrect supply sequencing — the +5 V digital supply must come up before the +12 V/-12 V analog supplies to prevent internal latch-up. Other pitfalls include omitting the mandatory 0.01 µF to 0.1 µF bypass capacitors on each supply pin, neglecting the bipolar-offset (BIP OFF) trim capacitor for accurate bipolar measurements, and driving analog inputs beyond ±15 V without external clamp diodes.
What replaces MAX174AEPI for new designs?
For new designs in 2026, the recommended modern replacement is the MAX1302 12-/14-bit simultaneous-sampling SAR ADC family in compact QSOP/TSSOP packages, with the MAX1062/MAX1067 as lower-speed 14-bit alternates. Per Analog Devices migration guides, these parts offer higher throughput, lower power, and a more compact footprint while preserving the parallel/microprocessor interface familiar to MAX174 users.

Notes de conception

The +5 V digital supply must be applied before (or simultaneously with) the +12 V and -12 V analog supplies. Powering the analog rails while the digital supply is still at 0 V can forward-bias internal ESD structures and cause permanent latch-up damage. A recommended sequencing circuit uses a Schottky diode from +5 V to the analog-supply enable, so the analog rails come up only after +5 V stabilizes. Allow at least 1 ms of settling time after each supply comes up before initiating a conversion (Estimated: based on typical LDOs settling within 1 ms and reference startup time specified by Maxim).

Place a 0.1 µF ceramic bypass capacitor directly across each of VCC (+5 V), VEE (+12 V), VLC (-12 V), and VCC2 (+12 V) supply pins, with the ground returns tied to the analog ground plane (AGND). Keep analog and digital ground returns separate until they join at one star point under the chip. Estimated: based on best-practice analog ADC layout from Maxim AN476 application notes; actual component values to confirm with datasheet decoupling recommendations. Place the BIP OFF capacitor close to pin 7 with its guard trace kept analog-side.

Do not leave the analog input floating; even a few nanoamps of leakage into the SAR capacitor array can corrupt the lowest bits. Tie unused analog inputs (A1/A2) to a defined mid-supply point through 1 kΩ resistors. Also, when driving a bipolar signal into an unipolar-only range, the internal scaling resistors assume the input center is at 0 V; misuse leads to clipping. Use the actual +5 V or +12 V analog supply, not a logic-level 3.3 V rail, for the digital interface — the data outputs are TTL-compatible only above the rated supply, and reading them with a 3.3 V MCU violates the absolute-maximum VI spec (per manufacturer datasheet, VOH depends on VCC = +5 V).

The 8 µs conversion window holds a strong charge-redistribution transient on the analog input; the input must settle to 0.5 LSB (about 2.4 mV for ±5 V range) within the acquisition time window. Add an external buffer amplifier (for example, a MAX477 with 50 mA output drive) directly at the analog input pin if the source impedance exceeds 100 Ω. Estimated: based on the input RC time constant calculation with a 10 pF sample cap and a 100 Ω Thevenin source, settling to 12-bit accuracy requires about 5 time constants (~25 ns) which any modern buffer handles comfortably.
