MAX196AEAI Présentation

The Maxim Integrated (Analog Devices) MAX196AEAI is a multi-range, 12-bit data-acquisition system (DAS) that integrates a 6-channel analog input multiplexer, track-and-hold amplifier, successive-approximation register (SAR) ADC, and on-chip reference. It operates from a single +5V supply while accepting analog inputs as large as ±10V, samples at up to 100 kSPS, and presents data through a parallel interface. It is offered in a 28-pin SSOP package (EAI suffix) for surface-mount industrial designs.

A Data Acquisition System (DAS) such as the MAX196 is a category of mixed-signal IC that combines the front-end signal conditioning (input mux, protection, T/H), the analog-to-digital conversion stage, and a digital host interface into a single device. Within the broader hierarchy of ICs, the MAX196 sits as: ADC -> Data Acquisition System -> Data Converter -> Mixed-Signal IC -> Semiconductor. Its primary value is replacing multiple discrete components (input protection resistors, mux, op-amp T/H, separate SAR, reference) with one chip, reducing BOM cost, board area, and design complexity.

Key features include software-selectable input ranges per channel (±10V, ±5V, 0 to 10V, 0 to 5V for MAX196; ±4V, 0 to 4V for MAX198), internal 4.096V reference (with option to overdrive), ±1/2 LSB linearity (A grade), ±16.5V input protection (continuous), 6 analog input channels, three-state bi-directional data port compatible with 8/16-bit buses, and TTL/CMOS-compatible I/O. Internal sequential channel scanning plus user-programmable channel sequencing support per-channel setup.

Architecturally, the device uses a capacitive-charge-distribution SAR converter with auto-calibration logic that nulls gain and offset errors at power-up. The on-chip reference is a buried Zener type with 50 ppm/°C typical drift. Analog inputs are routed through a fault-protected CMOS mux that tolerates overvoltages well beyond the supply rails without latch-up.

Typical applications include industrial process control and PLC analog front ends, multi-channel data loggers, portable instrumentation, medical patient monitoring equipment, and rack-mounted test and measurement systems where ±10V industrial signal ranges must be digitized directly from a +5V-only supply.

A key design tip: route AGND and DGND as a star-ground topology and decouple the +5V AVCC pin with both a 0.1 µF ceramic and a 10 µF tantalum as close to the IC as possible. For ±10V input ranges, use the internal 4.096V reference mode and rely on the on-chip dividers; for high-accuracy systems, drive REFADJ with a low-noise external op-amp or use the external-reference mode.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives drawn from Maxim's same product family (A/B/C grades, plus the +5V-only companion MAX198), and practical PCB layout guidance not consolidated in the original datasheet.

Applications typiques

MAX196AEAI convient pour 6 applications: Industrial Process Control / PLC Analog Front End, Multi-Channel Data Logger, Portable Medical Patient Monitoring, Rack-Mount Test & Measurement, Battery-Management Monitoring Boards, Audio-Band Signal Acquisition.

🏭

Industrial Process Control / PLC Analog Front End

The MAX196AEAI fits industrial process-control and PLC analog input modules because it accepts ±10V and ±5V inputs directly from a single +5V supply, eliminating the need for external resistor-divider networks or level-shift amplifiers. Its 6 single-ended channels are individually software-programmable, allowing one chip to handle mixed sensor types (e.g., ±10V from a pressure transmitter plus 0-10V from a temperature transducer) with 100 kSPS aggregate throughput and 12-bit (A-grade) linearity. The ±16.5V input overvoltage protection absorbs industrial wiring transients, while the internal 4.096V reference removes the cost of an external reference IC. For 8-channel systems, two MAX196AEAIs can be paralleled on the same bus.

📊

Multi-Channel Data Logger

The MAX196AEAI suits portable and bench-top multi-channel data loggers where compact BOM and single-supply operation simplify power design. Its on-chip 6-channel mux, T/H, and SAR ADC remove the discrete components that would otherwise surround a standalone ADC, and the parallel interface connects directly to an 8-bit microcontroller or DSP. The 100 kSPS conversion rate supports acquisition rates up to ~16 kSPS per channel when scanning all six inputs, suitable for vibration, temperature, and strain-gauge logging. Internal channel-sequencing and the three-state data bus allow the host to share the bus with other peripherals during conversion.

💊

Portable Medical Patient Monitoring

The MAX196AEAI's -40C to +85C industrial operating range, internal reference, and single +5V supply make it suitable for portable medical patient-monitoring peripherals (e.g., bedside signal-acquisition boards for ECG, SpO2, temperature) where board area and BOM cost matter. The 12-bit resolution is sufficient for vital-sign amplitude digitization; the ±10V range supports transducer front-ends with high common-mode voltages. The 6 single-ended inputs allow simultaneous monitoring of multiple leads. Note: medical safety certifications (IEC 60601-1) must be validated at the system level; this IC is not itself a certified medical component.

🖥️

Rack-Mount Test & Measurement

The MAX196AEAI's parallel bus and TTL/CMOS-compatible interface simplify integration into rack-mount test-and-measurement instruments where multiple ADCs are read by an FPGA or micro-controller backplane. Its hardware-initiated sequential scanning allows deterministic per-channel timing without software overhead, useful in digitizer and oscilloscope front-end designs. The 100 kSPS throughput and 12-bit linearity support mid-bandwidth signal capture (audio-band, low-frequency RF, transducer characterization). When paired with external signal conditioning, multiple MAX196 chips can digitize many channels simultaneously.

⚡

Battery-Management Monitoring Boards

Although primarily an ADC, the MAX196AEAI's bipolar ±10V input range and single +5V supply make it useful in battery-pack monitoring electronics that digitize individual cell voltages stacked to 12-24V (scaled within range). The 6 channels per IC allow a single device to monitor a 6-cell pack; two chips can handle 12-cell packs. Its low conversion latency supports periodic snapshot-mode monitoring. The internal reference simplifies factory calibration and the ±16.5V input protection absorbs inductive transients from the battery stack.

🎧

Audio-Band Signal Acquisition

The MAX196AEAI's 100 kSPS sampling rate easily covers the full audio band (20 Hz - 20 kHz) with margin for anti-aliasing filter roll-off, and its 12-bit dynamic range delivers ~72 dB SNR - sufficient for general-purpose audio acquisition, voice logging, and acoustic monitoring. The bipolar ±5V or ±10V ranges accept line-level audio inputs directly with appropriate AC coupling. The internal reference removes a source of hum and noise that would otherwise be injected into low-level audio. Use it for multi-channel acoustic arrays, voice recorders, and industrial sound-level meters.

What is the MAX196AEAI?
The MAX196AEAI is a multi-range, 12-bit, 100 kSPS single-supply data-acquisition system (DAS) from Maxim Integrated (now Analog Devices). According to the manufacturer datasheet, it combines a 6-channel analog input multiplexer, a track-and-hold amplifier, a SAR ADC, an internal 4.096V reference, and a parallel digital interface in a single 28-pin SSOP. The MAX196AEAI specifically accepts bipolar input ranges of ±10V and ±5V (plus 0-10V and 0-5V) from a single +5V supply.
What is the maximum sampling rate of the MAX196AEAI?
The MAX196AEAI performs successive-approximation conversions at up to 100 kSPS. According to the Analog Devices MAX196 datasheet, this is the conversion rate for single conversions initiated through the parallel interface; the device supports sequential channel scanning where the internal sequencer advances through programmed channels at this per-channel rate.
What input voltage ranges does the MAX196AEAI support?
The MAX196AEAI accepts four software-selectable input ranges per channel: ±10V, ±5V, 0 to +10V, and 0 to +5V. According to the Maxim datasheet, ranges are configured via the bidirectional data port during channel setup; this flexibility allows a single board to digitize both industrial ±10V signals and unipolar 0-5V transducer outputs without external resistor networks.
What is the difference between MAX196 and MAX198?
The MAX196 supports ±10V, ±5V, 0-10V, and 0-5V input ranges, while the MAX198 supports the lower-voltage ±4V and 0-4V ranges only. According to the manufacturer datasheet, the two parts share the same 28-pin SSOP/SSOP package, pinout, parallel interface, and SAR architecture; the MAX198 is intended for low-voltage signal chains where ±10V tolerance is not required.
What is the operating temperature range of the MAX196AEAI?
The MAX196AEAI operates from -40C to +85C, qualifying it for industrial applications. The 'E' in 'AEAI' denotes the extended-industrial temperature grade, the 'A' denotes 1/2-LSB linearity, the 'AI' suffix denotes the 28-pin SSOP package. Maxim also offers MAX196AEWI in wide-SO and MAX196AENI in 28-pin DIP for different mounting requirements.
Where can I download the MAX196AEAI datasheet PDF?
The official MAX196 datasheet is hosted on Analog Devices' website at https://www.analog.com/en/products/MAX196.html. Third-party mirrors (alldatasheet.com, digchip.com, findic.us) also distribute a copy of the original Maxim datasheet; the ADI-hosted version is the authoritative source and should be preferred for design work.
Where is the MAX196AEAI pinout located in the datasheet?
The MAX196AEAI pinout is shown in the 'Pin Configuration' section of the Analog Devices MAX196 datasheet, with pin descriptions in the 'Pin Description' table that follows. For the SSOP-28 (EAI) variant, the pinout is identical to the DIP-28 (ENI) and wide-SO-28 (EWI) variants with the exception of mechanical-only pins, allowing one PCB design to support all three package options.
How much does the MAX196AEAI cost and is it in stock?
As of 2026-10-15, the MAX196AEAI+ (lead-free, RoHS) is listed at DigiKey starting at approximately USD 32-33 in single-piece quantity, with volume breaks in the USD 21-25 range at 1k pieces. Stock is generally limited because the MAX196 family is approaching end-of-life; lead times for non-stocked variants can stretch to 8-12 weeks. The non-'+' (MAX196AEAI without +) is a pre-RoHS part with restricted availability.
What is the best drop-in replacement for the MAX196AEAI?
The best drop-in replacement depends on what you need to preserve. For an exact pin-and-spec match, the MAX196AENI+ (28-pin DIP) and MAX196AEWI+ (28-pin wide-SO) share the same die, parallel interface, and SAR architecture in mechanically compatible packages; the MAX196BEAI+ (B-grade linearity ±1 LSB) and MAX196ACAI+ (C-grade) are pin-compatible variants in the same SSOP-28 footprint. For lower-voltage signal chains requiring ±4V inputs, the MAX198AEAI+ is a pin-compatible alternate.
Can I substitute the MAX198AEAI for the MAX196AEAI?
The MAX198AEAI+ is pin-compatible with the MAX196AEAI+ in the same 28-pin SSOP package but accepts only ±4V and 0-4V input ranges, not ±10V and ±5V. According to the manufacturer datasheet, substituting MAX198 for MAX196 is safe ONLY if your input signals stay within ±4V; any signal exceeding ±4V must first be scaled down, otherwise it will saturate the MAX198's input mux.
What is a comparator to a modern equivalent of the MAX196AEAI from another vendor?
Cross-vendor drop-in equivalents for the MAX196AEAI are limited because the part integrates a proprietary 6-channel input mux, internal reference, and parallel interface on a single die. Analog Devices' own MAX1300 series (e.g., MAX1302) provides 12/14-bit multi-channel SAR ADCs but in different packages; Texas Instruments' ADS7809 is functionally similar (12-bit SAR, parallel, bipolar input) but uses a different package and pinout and would require PCB rework.
Is the MAX196AEAI obsolete or still being manufactured?
According to distributor listings as of 2026-10-15, the MAX196 family is classified as NRND (Not Recommended for New Designs) with an estimated EOL window in 2026. The part is still purchasable through authorized distributors and the factory, but Maxim/Analog Devices is steering new designs toward MAX1302, MAX1149, and similar successors in the MAX1300 family. For long-life industrial programs, qualify a successor now.
Does the MAX196AEAI have an internal reference?
Yes. The MAX196AEAI includes a factory-trimmed 4.096V buried-Zener reference accessible at REF and adjustable through REFADJ. According to the datasheet, the internal reference is sufficient for ±10V and ±5V input ranges with 12-bit accuracy; for tighter absolute accuracy or to share a system reference across multiple converters, the REFADJ pin can be overdriven by an external reference.
What are the key specifications of the MAX196AEAI that engineers should know?
The MAX196AEAI's headline specifications are: 12-bit resolution, 100 kSPS throughput, 6 single-ended input channels, software-selectable ranges of ±10V/±5V/0-10V/0-5V (MAX196), internal 4.096V reference, ±16.5V input overvoltage tolerance, single +5V supply, parallel 8/16-bit bus interface, 1/2 LSB INL (A grade), and operation from -40C to +85C in a 28-pin SSOP package.
What is the lead time for MAX196AEAI orders?
Lead times for the MAX196AEAI+ at authorized distributors as of 2026-10-15 typically range from 'in stock' (same-day shipment) for small quantities at DigiKey to 8-12 weeks for factory-direct orders of the non-'+' variant or large reels. Because the MAX196 family is NRND, lead-time variability is high; design teams should place safety stock orders or transition to a recommended successor such as the MAX1302 family.

Guide de sélection

Choose the MAX196AEAI when your design requires a 6-channel, 12-bit ADC that accepts ±10V or ±5V bipolar inputs from a single +5V supply in a compact SSOP-28 footprint - typical of industrial PLC analog front ends, bench-top data loggers, and rack-mount instrumentation. Choose the MAX196AENI+ (DIP) or MAX196AEWI+ (wide-SO) only if your assembly process or board layout requires those packages, since they share the same die and electrical specs. Substitute the MAX196BEAI+ (B-grade) or MAX196ACAI+ (C-grade) only if your accuracy budget tolerates ±1 or ±2 LSB INL; both share the same SSOP-28 footprint. Substitute the MAX198AEAI+ ONLY if your signal range is within ±4V - do not use it for ±10V signals. For new designs, evaluate successors such as MAX1302 or MAX12529 before committing to MAX196-family parts because the MAX196 is NRND with a planned 2026 EOL window.

Notes de conception

Use star-ground topology: tie AGND and DGND at a single point under the IC, then route them as separate traces to the system ground plane. Place the 0.1 µF ceramic + 10 µF tantalum AVCC decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of pins 10 and 28. The 28-SSOP thermal pad (if exposed) should be soldered to a copper pour tied to AGND for thermal dissipation. Keep analog input traces short and away from digital bus traces to minimize coupling noise.

Do NOT apply voltages beyond ±16.5V on any analog input pin - although the MAX196AEAI includes fault protection, sustained overvoltage can damage the input mux. When using the internal 4.096V reference, ensure REFADJ is left unconnected or decoupled with 0.01 µF to AGND; if you overdrive REF, decouple the REF pin with 1 µF ceramic. Note the 'A' in 'AEAI' denotes linearity grade - substituting the B or C grade (MAX196BEAI/MAX196ACAI) into a design calibrated for 1/2 LSB INL will degrade accuracy.

The MAX196AEAI requires a clean +5V analog supply. Use a separate LDO (e.g., LP2985-5.0 or equivalent) for AVCC rather than sharing a switching-converter output, because SAR ADCs are sensitive to high-frequency ripple. The reference voltage scales the LSB size - if you overdrive REF with an external 5.000V reference, the input ranges shift accordingly (e.g., ±10V becomes ±12.2V full-scale). Account for this when computing input-referred noise and INL.

For systems with long analog input cables (>1 m), add 1 kΩ series resistors at each CH0-CH5 pin followed by 1 nF ceramic caps to AGND to form a low-pass filter that attenuates RF pickup before the input mux. The internal input mux bandwidth is several MHz, so 10 kHz noise can alias into the baseband if not pre-filtered. The MAX196AEAI's 100 kSPS conversion rate provides 50 kHz Nyquist, so an external RC with fc ~30 kHz is appropriate for most sensor signals.
