MMA1618KW Présentation
An accelerometer is a micro-electromechanical (MEMS) sensor that converts mechanical acceleration along one or more axes into a proportional electrical signal. In the broader sensor hierarchy, the MMA1618KW belongs to: accelerometer -> inertial sensor -> motion sensor -> transducer -> sensor. Z-axis-only (uniaxial) accelerometers such as this one are optimized for crash detection and front-impact sensing, where the dominant acceleration vector is along the vehicle's vertical axis.
Key features include ±187 g range (overdamped for crash-pulse fidelity), 16-pin QFN (6x6 mm) automotive-grade package, DSI2.5 digital bus communication with programmable Device ID bit, and integrated over-damped mechanical element. The device supports standard DSI commands including Request ID, Output Read, and Reset, enabling multi-satellite bus topologies with a single master controller.
The MMA1618KW employs an overdamped Z-axis sensing element coupled to a dedicated DSI2.5 ASIC. The overdamped mechanical response (~100% critical damping) prevents resonant overshoot during sharp crash pulses, allowing the master ECU to apply integration algorithms directly without deconvolution. Internal signal conditioning provides a digital serial output over the two-wire DSI link, simplifying harness wiring in satellite-mounted airbag architectures.
Typical applications include automotive airbag satellite sensors (front, side, and rear impact detection), electronic stability control rollover sensing, and seatbelt pretensioner trigger modules. The QFN package is designed for through-hole or surface-mount satellite housings exposed to harsh underbody or seat-frame environments.
When designing with this device, observe the DSI2.5 bus timing specifications carefully — bus masters must implement the proper response window to avoid communication collisions. The exposed pad (EP) on the QFN package must be soldered to the board ground plane for mechanical stability and thermal performance.

Applications typiques
MMA1618KW convient pour 7 applications: Automotive Airbag Satellite Sensor, Electronic Stability Control Rollover Sensor, Seatbelt Pretensioner Trigger, Commercial Vehicle (24 V) Airbag System, Motorcycle and Powersport Airbag Sensor, Industrial Shock and Impact Recorder, Train and Rail Crash Monitoring.
Automotive Airbag Satellite Sensor
The MMA1618KW's ±187 g range and overdamped Z-axis sensing element make it a primary candidate for front-impact airbag satellite sensors mounted at the vehicle's front rails and firewall. The DSI2.5 digital interface allows a single ECU master to poll multiple satellites over a two-wire bus, dramatically simplifying the harness versus analog sensors. Because the mechanical element is overdamped (~100% critical damping), the output faithfully reproduces sharp crash pulses without resonant overshoot, letting the master ECU apply integration algorithms directly. Supply tolerance of 9 V to 24 V covers cold-crank and load-dump transients on a 12 V or 24 V automotive battery bus. Source: NXP MMA16xx datasheet, SafeAssure family qualification.
Recommandé
Electronic Stability Control Rollover Sensor
In electronic stability control (ESC) rollover-sensing architectures, the MMA1618KW is mounted near the vehicle's center of gravity to detect vertical-axis acceleration during extreme maneuvers. The Z-axis 187 g range captures hard landing events, while the overdamped response prevents resonant ringing from false-triggering the rollover algorithm. The DSI2.5 bus allows the ESC ECU to share satellite sensors with the airbag controller, reducing total sensor count and harness weight. Automotive-grade qualification and the wide 9 V to 24 V supply range ensure operation across all global automotive electrical environments, including 24 V commercial vehicle platforms.
Recommandé
Seatbelt Pretensioner Trigger
Seatbelt pretensioner systems require a satellite accelerometer to fire the pretensioner within milliseconds of crash onset. The MMA1618KW's overdamped Z-axis response delivers a clean pulse to the safety ECU without ringing, supporting fast-firing decision thresholds. The 16-QFN (6x6 mm) package is compact enough to fit inside a seat-mounted sensor pod, and its exposed pad provides mechanical anchoring to the housing PCB. DSI2.5 bus sharing with the airbag controller means the pretensioner logic can be integrated without adding a dedicated sensor harness. Per the SafeAssure family qualification, the part is suitable for ASIL-rated systems.
Recommandé
Commercial Vehicle (24 V) Airbag System
Commercial trucks, buses, and off-highway vehicles use a 24 V battery bus rather than the 12 V used in passenger cars. The MMA1618KW's 9 V to 24 V supply tolerance makes it compatible with 24 V systems without a separate regulator, simplifying the satellite module BOM. The ±187 g range handles heavy-vehicle crash pulses that may be more severe due to higher vehicle mass. DSI2.5 multi-drop bus topology scales to the larger number of mounting locations (cab, trailer hitch, underbody) required in commercial safety architectures.
Recommandé
Motorcycle and Powersport Airbag Sensor
Motorcycle and powersport airbag vests require compact, low-mass satellite accelerometers that survive harsh vibration and crash environments. The MMA1618KW's 16-QFN (6x6) package is small enough for integration into a vest-mounted pod, and its ±187 g Z-axis range covers the high-g deceleration events characteristic of motorcycle impacts. DSI2.5 bus interface allows a single wireless or wired ECU to read the satellite data while sharing the bus with other safety sensors. The automotive temperature grade covers under-hood and outdoor operating temperatures typical in powersport applications.
Recommandé
Industrial Shock and Impact Recorder
Outside automotive safety, the MMA1618KW can be deployed in industrial shock and impact recorders used for shipping-damage analysis, freight-handling audit trails, and structural-impact monitoring. Its ±187 g range captures impacts during rail, sea, and truck transport of fragile goods, while the overdamped response prevents false readings from resonant vibration. DSI2.5 digital output eliminates analog cable concerns in long-harness applications, and the wide supply range (9 V to 24 V) accommodates industrial battery and bus-powered data loggers.
Recommandé
Train and Rail Crash Monitoring
Rail vehicle crash event data recorders benefit from the MMA1618KW's high-g Z-axis range and automotive-grade qualification, which extends to rail environmental standards. The overdamped response faithfully captures the long-duration deceleration pulses typical of train collisions, while the DSI2.5 bus allows integration with existing rail safety controllers. Supply voltage tolerance up to 24 V matches the nominal rail auxiliary bus. The 16-QFN package fits inside compact rail-mounted sensor enclosures.

Notes de conception
The exposed pad (EP) on the 16-QFN package must be soldered to the PCB ground plane. This provides the primary mechanical anchoring for the MEMS element and a thermal path for self-heating under continuous bus activity. Per NXP application guidance, use at least 4 thermal vias under the EP to the inner-layer ground pour.
DSI2.5 is a two-wire digital bus; route the clock and data lines as a differential pair with characteristic impedance of approximately 100 Ω. Keep traces away from switching power and airbag squib drivers to avoid cross-talk into the satellite data. Add 100 Ω series termination at the master ECU end if the bus length exceeds 100 mm.
Do not assign the NC pins (5, 6, 8-16) to any net; they are reserved by NXP for factory test. Connecting them can latch the device into test mode. The TEST pin (7) must be left open or tied per datasheet — pulling it low forces factory test mode and disables normal DSI2.5 operation.
Decouple VDD (pin 1) with a 100 nF X7R ceramic capacitor placed within 2 mm of the pin, plus a 10 µF bulk capacitor at the satellite module entry. The wide 9 V to 24 V supply tolerance eliminates the need for a pre-regulator but does not protect against reverse polarity — add an external reverse-battery diode if the harness is hot-pluggable.
DSI2.5 bus masters must implement the proper response window (typically 16 to 64 µs) before requesting the next satellite output. Failing to wait for the response can cause bus collisions and silent data corruption. Reference the MMA16xx datasheet section 4.2 for bus timing diagrams.
